Robert Edward West
Robert Edward West, age 76, of 207 East Pearl Street, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 1999 at his home. He was born February 13, 1923 at Brier, Missouri, the son of William and Minnie Hurt West. He married Mary Elizabeth Shoemaker West on January 25,1947 in Oran, Missouri. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Edward D. West, RR Cameron, Illinois; four daughters, Elizabeth Fritz, Berwick, Illinois; Phyllis Tapp, Marion, Iowa; Linda Anderson, Galesburg, Illinois and Gayla Steele, Troy, Missouri; one brother, George West, R. Rt. Abingdon; one sister, Irene Wells, Galesburg, Illinois; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, including his twin and five brothers. He had lived in Abingdon the past 52 years. He worked at the former Brass Factory in Abingdon for 23 years until it closed. He then worked at Butler Manufacturing Company in Galesburg retiring in 1987. He also farmed with his son near Abingdon. He served in the CCC and later in the army during WW II in the Fifth Infantry where he was a tank operator. He served in Africa, Italy, France and Yugoslavia. He was of the Methodist Faith. He was a past member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post in Abingdon and assisted with both the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts of America. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon with Eleanor Landon, officiating. Burial was in Abingdon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association or Abingdon Senior Citizen’s Van.
Laverne H. Hillyer
Laverne H. Hillyer, 77, of Mulberry Ark., a former McDonough County resident, died Dec. 17, 1998, in the Crawford Memorial Hospital in Van Buren, Ark. He was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Colchester to Buzz and Ada Hendrix Hillyer. He married Lois Elizabeth Harwick. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Becky Kern of Davenport, Iowa, and Angela Angelo of Dallas, Texas; and one son, Gerald Hillyer of Pardeeville, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vada Weaver of Macomb and Irene Creasy of Colchester; and one brother, Hancil Hillyer of Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard and an infant grandson. Mr. Hillyer was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the 361st Infantry Association and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a retired parts supervisor for Ametek, Inc., of Grand Prairie, Texas. Creation rites were accorded by Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home in Macomb. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery last Saturday with military rites by the Macomb VFW Post 1921.
Barbara H. Aten
Barbara H. Aten, 65, of Riverside, Calif., a former Macomb resident, died Sunday, April 4 at 1 a.m. at her residence. She was born Aug. 3, 1933, in Macomb, the daughter of James Henry and Virginia Stuart Parker Hermetet.. She is survived by one son, Gregory Aten of Paso Robles, Calif.; two daughters, Tracy Kingsley of Tustin, Calif. and Julie Stice of Riverside, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Eugene (Nancy "Nan”) Cathers of Macomb; a stepmother, Rose Hermetet of Macomb; five granddaughters, Kim Kingsley, Rebecca Kingsley, Cathy Aten, Emily Stice, Rachel Stice; and one grandson, Dan Aten. She was a secret control officer with the Naval Warfare Assessment Div. in Norco, Calif., before retiring in 1995. Graveside services are in Oakwood Cemetery, Saturday, April 19, with the Rev. Ron Green officiating. Sargent-Worthington Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service in California will be at 3 p.m. April 12 in the Corona Evangelical Free Church, Corona, Calif. Robert W. White
Robert W. White, age 59, of Joy, Illinois, passed away at 2:43 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999 in Trinity West Medical Center, Rock Island. He was born July 20, 1939, in Trenton, Nebraska, the son of Earl and Minnia Marquette White. He married Patricia Powell on November 25, 1959, in Avon. Surviving are his wife; one son, Robert White, Aledo; one daughter, Kristin Tracy, Aledo; one brother, Wayne Woods, Bartley, Nebraska, and one grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant son. He was graduated from McCook High School, McCook, Nebraska. He lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado, for eight years. He lived in Joy since 1969. He worked for Heinz USA, Muscatine, Iowa, for many years. A private graveside service will be held Thursday in Avon Cemetery, with the Rev. Rachel Stookel officiating. No visitation is planned. Corman Memorial Home, Avon, is in charge or arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Mercer County Cancer Society.
Bonnie Jean Carlson
Bonnie Jean Carlson, 58, of 975 East Fremont Street, Galesburg, passed away at 5:08 a. m. Saturday, April 3, 1999 at home. She was born January 28, 1941, in Galesburg, the daughter of Harold and Jean Temple Benson. She married Donald Carlson on November 26, 1971, in Rock Island. Surviving are her husband; her mother; one stepson, Dennis Carlson, Galesburg; two daughters, Christine Patrick, Abingdon and Ronda John, Galesburg; two stepdaughters, Debbie Carlson, Galesburg, and Denise Fairchild, Las Vega, Nevada; and one sister, Kathy Carlson, Galesburg. She was graduated from Galesburg High School in 1959. She worked for Mangieri Cleaning Services in Abingdon for nine years, retiring in 1998. She was a member of Coldbrook Christian Church. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m.Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Burial was in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice of America or to the family.
Helen L. Bloss
Miss Helen L. Bloss, 86, of Macomb, formerly of New Canton, died at 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 3, 1999, at her nephew’s residence, 821 Orchard Drive, Macomb. She was born Jan. 21, 1913, in New Canton to Winfield and Roxanne Havens Bloss. Miss Bloss is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Roberts of Maocmb; a nephew, Louis Fuller of Macomb; and two great -nephews, Capt. Timothy L. Fuller, M.D., of the Army, stationed in Lundstaul, Germany, and Theodore Edward Fuller of Memphis, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Edith L. Fuller; and a brother, Harold Bloss. Helen was a secretary at the Implement Dealership and was a member of New Canton United Methodist Church and attended Wesley United Methodist Church in Macomb. Graveside services were Friday in New Canton Shearer Cemetery with the Rev. Dorothy Browning officiating. Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfiled was in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the New Canton United Methodist Church.
Robert S. Shores
Robert S. Shores, 61, Fountain Green, passed away at 2:12 a.m. Friday, April 2, 1999 in Montebello Manor Nursing Home, Hamilton, Illinois. He was born September 20, 1937, in Victoria, the son of Sirrell and Blanche Powell Shores. He married Patricia Ann McConnell on March 9, 1960, in Macomb. Surviving are his mother, Abingdon; his wife; one son, Robert Allan Shores, Peck, Michigan; three daughters, Rebecca Sue Gilpin, Dallas City, Judith Lynn Shores, Burnside, and Robin Castillo Port Huron, Michigan; one brother, Lawrence Shores, Taylor, Michigan; three sisters, Julie Ann Shores and Margaret Florence, both of Galesburg, and Norma Barnes, Bardolph; 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and his father. He worked as a mechanic in Opheim and for the last 20 years at Knorr and Walker, Carthage. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Banks and Beals Funeral Home, LaHarpe, with Rev. Michael Deblois officiating. Burial was in McConnell Cemetery near Fountain Green. A memorial fund has been established.
Leo A. "Bert" Kidwell
Leo A. "Bert" Kidwell, age 81, of Berwick, Illinois, passed away at 9:43 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, Illinois. He was born February 17, 1918 in Springfield, Kentucky, the son of Joe and Mary Praxie Kidwell. He married Retta Condiff on June 1, 1940 in St. Augustine, Illinois. She preceded him in death. Survivors include one son, Larry Kidwell, of Gilson, Illinois; one daughter, Kay Cecil, Maquon; two brothers, James Hilman Kidwell, London Mills, and Julian Kidwell, Springfield, Kentucky; nine grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters. He had lived in Berwick the past 20 years. He retired from Admiral division of Maytag where he worked for 18 years. Cremation was accorded. No services are being planned. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Warren County Humane Society.
Joyce R. Thurman
Joyce R. Thurman, age 57, of 6 Sunset Lane, Bushnell, passed away at 4:21 a.m. Friday, April 9, 1999, at her home. Born July 16, 1941, in Peoria to Harold and Emma Strawbridge Boyer, she married Leland R. Thurman on April 20, 1962, in Prairie City. He survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Julie) Sprout of Peoria and Mrs. Brad (Lisa) Rogers of Normal; one brother, H. Robert Boyer of Blandinsville; and three grandchildren. She worked for Farmers and Merchants State Bank for 21 years. She was a member of Bushnell United Methodist Church and the Lucille Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at her church with Rev. Mary Kathryn Pearce officiating. Burial was in Bushnell Cemetery. Martin-Hollis Funeral Home, Bushnell, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to McDonough District Hospital hospice program or Shaw Creek Golf Course.
