Maudie Pansy Johnson
Maudie Pansy Johnson, age 94, of 906 North Main Street, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 4:09 a.m. Friday, April 9, 1999 in the emergency room of Cottage Hospital. She was born May 21, 1904 in RR Smithfield, Illinois, Fulton County, the daughter of Frank and Martha Baughman Postin. She married Lessie Lee Johnson on February 2,1924 at Lewistown, Illinois. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1958. Survivors include seven sons, Frank Johnson, Greenbush, Carl Johnson, Roseville, Emil Johnson Sr., St. Augustine, Lloyd Johnson, Gladstone, Wayne Johnson, state of Oregon, Jim and Ronald Johnson, both of Avon; five daughters, Darlene Rice, Carol Ashby and Maudie Riley, all of Abingdon, Dolly VanSkike, Stevens Point, Wisconsin and Florence Sanders, Aledo; 58 grandchildren; several great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren and several great-great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sons, Les, Thomas and Robert, five sisters and three brothers. She had lived in the Abingdon area most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of the United Pentecostal Church, Abingdon. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United Pentecostal Church with Rev. Danny Hunt officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon Cemetery. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon, was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to her family.
Larry Lefler
Larry Luther Lefler, age 57, of 207 S. I Street, Monmouth, passed away at 4:20 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 1999, at his home. Born August 6, 1941, in Warren County to Ross Calvin and Ellen Viola Williams Lefler, he married Mary Lou Griffee on September 17,1961, in Monmouth. She survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. David (Amy) Nelson of Rio; one son, Shawn Lefler of Monmouth; five brothers, Kenneth of Lewistown, Loren of Canton, Adrian and Jerry, both of Monmouth, and Lyle of Cuba; and six sisters, Doris Carnes and Martha Wicks, both of Abingdon, Mrs. Raymond (Ona) Younge of Galesburg, and Mrs. Jack (Rilla) Stivers, Mrs. Don (Reva) Farmer and Mrs. Dale (Alleyne) Mills, all of Monmouth. He was preceded in death by his parents. He worked for Brown Lynch and Scott, OK Tire and Ryner Fertilizer and then was employed by Keister’s Tire for 30 years. Cremation was accorded. A private committal service will be in Monmouth Cemetery. Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel in Monmouth was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Warren County Cancer Society or the Community Hospices of America.
Twyla M. Parkins
Twyla M. Parkins, aged 84, died at 8:47 p.m., Saturday, April 10, 1999 at Pittsfield Manor in Pittsfield, IL. She was born on May 12, 1914 in McDonough County, Ill to Ernest John and Flora Mae Johnson Spencer. She married Vernon Garold Parkins on March 14, 1942 in Wayland, MO. He died Jan. 22, 1989. She is survived by twin daughters: Mrs. Dan (Sheryl Rae) Voorhis of Macomb, IL and Mrs. Garold (Jan) Parkins of Pittsfield, IL, four grandchildren, two sisters; Dorothy Bagley and Doris Trotter, both of Adair, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers; Delbert Wayne Spencer and Leonard Dale Spencer. She graduated from Adair High School in 1933 and the Gem City Business School in 1935. She was a former member of the EUB Church in Adair, past member os the Jolly House Keepers Club in Colchester, and also a past member of the Adair Home Economics Club. Services were held at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home, Wednesday at 1 p.m. They were presided by the Rev. James Comstock. Burial took place at the Pennington Point Cemetery in rural Macomb. Memorials may be made to the Pennington Point Cemetery.
Helen Anna Ruggles
Helen Anna Ruggles, 76, of Macomb for the past several months and formerly a lifetime resident of Carthage, died Sunday, April 18, 1999 at the McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. She was born on June 29, 1922 in Basco, the daughter of Reinhard Oswald and Charlotte Frances Bachman Miller. She married Thomas L. Ruggles on Dec. 16, 1942. He died Nov. 2, 1978. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two sisters, Marie M. Berg of Havana and Betty Jean Montgomery of Carthage. Mrs. Ruggles was a member of the United Methodist Church of Carthage. She enjoyed dancing and enjoyed attending the Senior Citizen Socials. Services were Wednesday at the Lamporte Funeral Home of Carthage with the Rev. Kenneth Zinn officiating. Burial was in the Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.
Sally J. Barsi
Sally J. Barsi, 67 of 1111 W. Adams St, Macomb died Friday, April 16, 1999 at 7:20 p.m. at McDonough District Hospital. She was born on Aug. 8, 1931 in Rushville to Theodore R. and Josephine Berg Mills. She married Lawrence J. Barsi on Oct. 4, 1962 in Kahoka, Mo. He died Dec. 22, 1990. She is survived by her mother: Josephine of Rushville, IL; one son, Marty (Virginia) Barsi of Colchester, Ill; one daughter, Jolyn Barsi of Boca Raton, Fla; two grandchildren, Tera and Michael Walters; and two brothers; William T. Mills of Peoria, IL and James B. Mills of Tucson, Az. Her father preceded her in death. Mrs. Barsi received an associate degree in arts from Stephems College and Bachelor of Science in education from Western Illinois University. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church of Macomb, the Macomb Country Club, and Hawaii Yacht Club. She had owned the House of Bottles in Macomb since 1967. Services were Wed. at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Myers officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Macomb Beautiful or to Junior Golf at Gold Hills Golf Course.
Virginia M. Scott
Virginia M. Scott, aged 87, of 520 S. Pearl St., Macomb, died Wed., April 14, 1999 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Ill. She was born on Feb.11, 1912 in Tuscola, Ill to John G. and Emily Warren Patton. She married Keith F. Scott on Oct. 12, 1938 in Macomb, Ill. He died June 6, 1991. She is survived by two sons: K. Raymond Scott of Glenview, Ill and John W. Scott of Richmond, Va; one daughter: Joan Scott O’Hare of Peoria, Ill.; five grandchildren: Kevin Scott, Kimberly Yagelski, Keith H. Scott, Thomas S. O’Hare, and Emily J. O’Hare; two sisters: Dorothy Grigsby and Esther Nielsen, both of Macomb, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Scott received a B.E. Degree from Western Illinois State Teachers College in 1932 and taught school for 5 years in Macomb. she was initiated into Chapter K of P.E.O. in 1949, and served as past president. She was a 55-year member of the Eastern Star and a member of the XXMD Club. She was a charter member of the McDonough District Hospital Auxiliary, member of the First Presbyterian Church and of its church Morning Circle, both of Macomb. Services were held Saturday at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Green and Rev. Charles Kriner presiding. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. Robert L. Harper
Robert L. Harper, 77 of 240 E. Main St., Good Hope, Ill died Saturday, April 17,1999 at the McDonough District Hospital, Macomb. He was born Jan. 3, 1922 in McDonough County, the son of George and Maude Bevard Harper. He married Julia Mae Colbert on Sept. 12, 1948 in Blandinsville, Ill. He is survived by his wife Julia; two daughters, Patty (Larry) Moore of Jacksonville, Ill and Peggy (Steve) Kreps of Champaign, Ill; two sons, Michael (Joyce) of Macomb, Ill and Mark (Marie) of Thayer, Ill; nine grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, four sisters, Vera Vogler, Helen Sperry, and Fawn Cramer all of Macomb, Ill and Joann Lovejoy of Bushnell, Ill and one brother, Arlo of Bushnell, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Paul and Delbert; three sisters, Lois (in infancy), Donna, and Mary; and two grandsons, Alecs and Mitchell. He was educated in Good Hope and Blandinsville and farmed his entire life in Hancock and McDonough Counties. He enjoyed attending baseball games and other sporting events, hunting and showing milking shorthorns at local fairs and at the Illinois State Fair. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Sargent-Worthington Funeral Home in Macomb with the Rev. Gerald Seabaugh officiating. Burial was in the Good Hope Cemetery, Good Hope, Ill. Memorials can be made to the Good Hope Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Alfa I. Ellis
Alfa I. Ellis, 88, of Macomb, died at 4:08 p.m. Friday April 16, 1999, at McDonough District Hospital. She was born on July 2, 1910 in Minot, ND, the daughter of Clarence and Winnie Rawlins Nelson. She married Floyd Ellis on September 21, 1929, in Palmyra. Mo. He died March 15, 1979. Mrs. Ellis is survived by one son, David Ellis of Macomb and one grandson, Daryl Ellis, of Macomb. She was preceded in death by one son, Keith Ellis and one brother, Emery. Mrs. Ellis lived on a farm southwest of Industry from 1942 - 1984. She formerly lived in Schuyler County. Services were Wed. in the Sargent-Worthington Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Green officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
Margaret M. Staat
Memorial services for Margaret Merillat Staat were held Tuesday, April 13, at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, Dallas, TX. Interment was in Restland Memorial Park. Mrs. Staat, a resident of Dallas since 1949, died at her home on April 9, 1999. Memorials may be made to the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, 8600 Skyline Drive in Dallas, or to the American Cancer Society, 8900 Carpenter Freeway, Dallas TX 75247. She was born October 24, 1912, in Winfield, IA. She married Francis Henry Staat II, who preceded her in death in 1990. Mrs. Staat leaves: a brother Herbert Christian Merillat, Washington, DC; three children, Christine Staat Rogers and her husband Howard in Dallas, Henry and Merillat Staat and his wife Janice in Norman, OK, and Katherine Staat of Austin, TX; four grandchildren, Peggy Honea, Dallas, Louise Honea, Grand Rapids, MI, Merillat Saint-Amand, Charleston, SC, and Francis Henry Staat III, Norman, OK. She was a graduate of Monmouth College and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. The Staats were charter members of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, where she was active in numerous social and charitable activities of the congregation.
