Leroy Birdsell
Leroy James Birdsell, 77, of 2303 Broadway, Pekin, formerly of San Jose, died at 3 a.m. Friday, January 15, 1999, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Born January 22, 1921, in Chicago to Ernest and Hazel Gullett Birdsell, he married Mary Rollins on September 9, 1939, in Chicago. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Robert and William, both of Pekin, and Michael of Delavan; three daughters, Barbara Maxwell of Jacksonville, and Judith Anderson and Bonita Swan, both of Pekin; two brothers, Ernest of Pekin and Irwin of Deer Creek; two sisters, Gloria Young of Roseville and Doris Salerno of Chicago; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Lawrence, one daughter, Kimberly, and five sisters.
A World War II Army veteran, he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star three times.
He owned and operated a produce business in rural Delavan for many years.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 18, at Fondulac Cemetery, East Peoria. The Rev. Keith Heberer officiated. Davis Mortuary, Tremont, was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Harold J. Fordyce
Harold J. Fordyce, age 74, of Montgomery, Illinois, a former Roseville resident, died Tuesday, January 5, 1999 in a hospital in Aurora, Illinois. Funeral services were held on Friday, January 8, at Healy Chapel, Aurora, with the Rev. Gerald L. Rygh officiating.
The son of the late Harold and Stella (Mading) Fordyce, he was born April 9, 1924 in Eleanor, Illinois. He married Rae Miller, who died in February 1997. An infant son, John Christian, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Fordyce attended Jackson Corners grade school here, and graduated from Roseville High School. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army in WWII, serving in the Philippine Islands, and was a member of the VFW Post, No. 1752, in Montgomery.
Mr. Fordyce retired as manager of Aurora Hearing Aid Center, after more than 35 years of service.
He leaves: three sons, Gabe Kirkpatrick of Grapevine, Texas and Stanley and John J. Fordyce, at home; two grandsons; an aunt, Mrs. Marie Atkins of LaHarpe; and several cousins.
Anna M. Shughart
Anna M. Shughart, age 84, of 805 Costello Terrace, Monmouth, Illinois, passed away at 2:10 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 1999 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Galesburg.
She was born May 24, 1914 in Warren County, Illinois, the daughter of Jacob and Bertha (Stevenson) Ryner. She was reared and educated in Warren County and attended Monmouth High School.
Anna married Wyatt "Pete" Shughart in Monmouth, Illinois, on March 21, 1936 and he passed away on August 5, 1980.
She was a homemaker and worked for several years at Smoler-Formfit in Monmouth.
Surviving are one son, Jerry Shughart of Hohenwald, Tennessee; four daughters, Janet (Richard) Simpson of Alexis, Celia (James) Linze of Melbourne, AK., Ellen (John) Adkisson of Roseville, Illinois and Linda Heikes of Calico Rock, AK., 18 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Reynolds of Taylor Ridge, Illinois, and Lois Anderson of Cambridge, Illinois; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Wayne Shughart; two infant children; one grandson, one granddaughter and one sister, Ruth Hood.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 1999 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth with burial in Mosher Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established to be designated later.
Marjorie Rinehart
Marjorie Rinehart, age 80, of 13765 N. 2100th Road, Good Hope, Illinois, passed away at 12:46 p.m. on Monday January 18, 1999 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.
She was born to Willis and Bertha Carter Keener on June 2, 1918, in Crawfordsville, Iowa. She married Wesley Rinehart of Sciota on March 21, 1939. He survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Betsy Rinehart of Galesburg, Nancy (Gary) Dalpiaz of Beardstown, and Susan Rinehart of Good Hope; four grandsons Rick (Michelle) Morrell, Dan (Angela) Morrell, Brian (Sarah) Dalpiaz, and Kevin Dalpiaz, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Everett and Orville Keener and two sisters, Mabel Galbraith and Audrey White.
Marjorie had attended school in Stronghurst, Illinois; Ocala, Florida, and Washington, Iowa, graduating from Stronghurst in 1936. She was actively involved in her family life. She organized Girl Scout troops in Henderson County, serving as neighborhood chairman.
She was on the steering committee for senior citizens, representing Walnut Grove Township and organized many one-day bus trips. From that she became a full time agent and tour director for Parkhill Tours of Champaign to which she had a big following. Marjorie belonged to Center Club of Good Hope and the Good Hope Womens Club. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 22 at the Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Blandinsville with Reverend Charles Kriner officiating. Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Funeral Home in Blandinsville where the family will meet with friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Glade City Cemetery in Blandinsville.
Memorials may be made to the Good Hope Rescue Squad or the Blandinsville Library.
Eugene L. "Gene" McCormick
Eugene L. "Gene" McCormick, age 75, of 810 North Washington Street, Abingdon, Illinois, passed away at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, January 16, 1999 at the Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.
He was born November 27, 1923 in Buda, Illinois, the son of Charles and Zelda Howe McCormick. He married Darlene Brush on January 27, 1945 at Knoxville, Illinois. She survives.
Other survivors include one son Roger D. McCormick, Richmond, Virginia; two daughters, Starlett Beaudoin, Houston, Texas and Carol Walker, Abingdon; five brothers, John and Don of Maquon, Illinois; Charles of Viola, James of Galesburg and Dean of Aledo; two sisters, Blanche May Cotton and June Riley, both of Moline; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He grew up in the Maquon area and attended the Yates City schools. He farmed in Lewis County, Missouri and retired in 1983. He moved back to Galesburg area in 1988. He had been a patient at Heartland Health Care Center the past six years. He was a musician in several area bands.
He was also a member of the River Rats Baseball Team from Maquon in the 1950’s. He was a past member of Lewis County Farm Bureau, Lewis County Home Extension Service and the National Farmers organization.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Abingdon, Illinois. Rev. Robert Snyder officiated. Burial was in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Heartland Health Care Center.
Stanley Lewis
Stanley R. Lewis, 79, of 550 East Carl Sandburg Drive, Galesburg, Illinois, passed away at 2:09 p.m. Friday, January 15, 1999, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
Born December 12, 1919, in Abingdon to Ralph and Ione Randall Lewis, he married Marian Foster on March 21, 1942, in Palmyra, Missouri. She died December 3, 1998.
His parents, one grandchild and one brother also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Sid of Abingdon and John of Peoria; two brothers, William of Decatur and Robert of Winter Park, Florida; four grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He had lived in Abingdon most of his life and later moved to Galesburg in 1974. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1937. He was a wood pattern maker for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria. He later managed the Robinson Lumber Company in Abingdon. He last worked at Galesburg Glass for 25 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a World War II Army veteran with the rank of captain serving in Europe. He attended Officer Training School in Aberdeen, Maryland. He was a former member of Abingdon American Legion Post 381 and was a member of Galesburg American Legion Post 285 for a total of 52 years.
He was a member of First Congregational Church in Abingdon, where he served as church treasurer. He was a former member and past president of Abingdon Rotary Club.
Funeral service were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel with Rev. Jon Prain officiating. Burial was in the Abingdon Cemetery where military rites were conducted by Abingdon American Legion Post 381.
Memorials may be made to his church.
Ruth E. Bird
Ruth E. Bird, 90, of Abingdon, Illinois, formerly of Alexis, Illinois, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Saturday, January 23, 1999 at the Care Center of Abingdon. She was born September 16, 1908 in Mercer County, Illinois, the daughter of Arthur and Carrie Stephens Perrin. She married Clifford G. Bird in Morrison, Illinois on December 20, 1930. He passed away on March 27, 1972. Three brothers and one sister and her parents also preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, Thomas (Irma) Bird of Alexis and Richard (Jenna) Bird of Abingdon; one sister, Mrs. Kermit (Gladys) Shangle of Louisville, Kentucky; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Alexis United Presbyterian Church and 50 year member of the Eastern Star in Alexis. She was reared and educated in Aledo, Illinois and graduated from Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois. Graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 26, 1999 in Alexis Cemetery with Rev. Marti Jones of the Alexis United Presbyterian Church officiating. Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Alexis was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.
Thelma J. Sanders
Thelma J. Sanders, 78, Abingdon, formerly of Silvis, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001 at her son’s home in Abingdon.
She was born Nov. 21, 1922, in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Bessie Kahler Bahr.
She married Stanley H. Sanders on Nov. 26, 1939, in Marengo, Iowa. He died in 1986.
Surviving are two sons, Ralph (and Deanne) Sanders, Silvis, and Stanley F. (and Vicky) Sanders, Abingdon; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Blanche Hudepohl, Williamsburg, Iowa; and two brothers, Marvin Bahr, Marengo, Iowa, and Kenneth Bahr, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was preceded in death by one sister, two brothers and one grandson.
She worked at Maid-Rite and Frostop in Silvis and retired after working in the cafeteria of Silvis schools.
She was a former member of Silvis United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday in Schroder Mortuary, Silvis.
Burial was in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

William "Bill" C. Baughman
Word has been received of the death of William "Bill" C. Baughman, 64, of Dothan, Ala., formerly of Abingdon, on Sept. 8, 2001.
He was the son of Loren and Maxine Baughman, of Abingdon, who preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Terry Baughman.
Graveside committal of cremains was held Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001
