Betty J. Foster
Betty J. Foster, 64, Good Hope, died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, at McDonough District Hospital.
She was born April 1, 1938, in Macomb, the daughter of Jennings and Ruth (Downing) Stoneking. She married Robert Foster Oct. 12, 1955. He survives.
She is also survived by two sisters, Anna Wixom, Bonaparte, Iowa, and Sharon Faye Crane, Davenport, Iowa.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Calvin Stoneking, and one sister, Mary Jane Stoneking.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at the Good Hope Cemetery.
Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Charles W. Whitford
Charles W. Whitford, 86, 205 E. Maine St., Augusta passed away at 10:30 a.m. Sunday July 7, 2002 in his home. He was born March 5, 1916 in Augusta the son of John Henry and Minnie (Hudson) Whitford. He was married to Carrie McClain on August 30, 1939 in Palmyra, Mo. She survives.
He is survived by: three sons, John (Sandy) Whitford, Hamilton, Robert L. (Marilyn) Whitford, Colchester and Larry (Darla) Whitford, Plymouth; one daughter, Patricia (Jim) Rash, Plymouth; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Morrell and Russell Whitford.
He was a retired contractor and attended Augusta Schools. He attended Augusta Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed pitching horseshoes and attending auctions and yard sales.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002 in the Old Augusta Cemetery in Augusta with the Rev. Loren Curtis officiating. Memorials may be made to Southeastern High School sports programs.
Leo F. Mowen
Graveside services were held Monday, July 8, for Leo F. Mowen, 75, Roseville, in Raritan Cemetery with the Rev. James Oliver officiating. Military rites were accorded by Lawson Babbitt Post #614 American.
Mr. Mowen died Friday, July 5, 2002, at 4:20 a.m. at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Iowa City, Iowa. Corman Memorial Home, Roseville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be left to the Roseville American Legion Post’s Nursing Fund of to the Roseville Area Ambulance.
A son of Ivan and Grace Robinson Mowen, he was born Nov. 20, 1926, in Raritan. He married Marlene Watts in 1949 in Henderson County.
He leaves: four sons, Jerry (Connie) Mowen of Monmouth, Randy (Mary) Mowen of Roseville, Kelly (Vicki) Mowen of Avon and Brian (Nancy) Mowen, Overland Park, Kan.; a daughter, Lisa (Anthony) Graham, Skiatook, Okla.; a sister, Mary Hilten of Smithshire; 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
His parents, an infant son and two brothers preceded him in death.
Mr. Mowen farmed in Point Pleasant Township, Warren County, most of his life. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of Lawson Babbitt Post #614 American Legion.
Anna L. Moore
Anna L. Moore, 64, a resident of Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, died at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital E.R.
She was born Sept. 1, 1937, in Macomb, to Lawrence and Mattie Elizabeth Rhoades VeNard. She married John D. Moore on Dec. 13, 1952, in Pocahontas, Ark. He preceded her in death on March 10, 1986.
She was also preceded in death by 1 son, John D. Moore Jr., her parents and two brothers.
Surviving are four sisters, Margaret (Richard) Arnold of RR St. Augustine, Mary Johnson of Florida; Patsy (Dale) Kempster of Aransas Pass, Texas; Rebecca (Sonny) Cooper of Yates City; two brothers, Leland Earl (Beverly) VeNard of Mesa, Ariz.; George (Mary Ann)VeNard of Beloit, Wis. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was a homemaker.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Maquon Cemetery with Eleanor Landon officiating.
Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements.

Frances V. Findahl
Frances V. Findahl, 90, of Galesburg, died at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, in Seminary Manor.
She was born Nov. 2, 1911, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Ferdinand and Augusta (Carlson) Carlson.
She married Earl Gordon Findahl on July 6, 1944, in Spokane, Wash.
Surviving are three daughters, Marilyn Wolf, Concord, Calif.; Rebecca Findahl (Ronald Glassman), New York, N.Y., and Sharon Redington, Galesburg; three grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.
She graduated from high school in Canada and from Calvary General Hospital School of Nursing.
She was a registered nurse, last working at Care Center of Abingdon for 17 years.
She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church, AARP, Galesburg Women’s Club and the Galesburg Rescue Mission Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Malone officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Assembly of God Church.
Gladys I. Anderson
Gladys I. Anderson, 92, a resident of the Care Center of Abingdon for the past 10 years, died at 11:45 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2002, at the Care Center.
She was born Feb. 28, 1910 in Quincy, to Frederick and Clara Shultz Greene.
She married Claude Peck. He preceded her in death in 1942. She later married Iren "Andy" E. Anderson on June 19, 1948. He preceded her in death in 1972.
Surviving is a daughter, Nancy (Raleigh) Stegall of Galesburg; 3 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 step-great-grandchild; 1 great-great-grandchild; one brother Harold Greene of Galesburg.
She was also preceded in death by 6 sisters.
She had lived in Abingdon most of her life. She was a homemaker. She was an office assistant for Dr. Gleave and Dr. Bowman and later was a sales clerk at the former Ben Franklin Store in Abingdon for 10 years.
She was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church and the Jolly Grandmothers Club. She also volunteered for many years at the Care Center of Abingdon before she was a resident.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Abingdon Christian Church with the Rev. Raymond McLaren officiating. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m.Thursday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon.
Memorials may be made to the Abingdon Christian Church or the Care Center of Abingdon.
Lyle E. Gillette
Lyle E. Gillette, 76, Peoria, died at 11:25 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 31, 1926, in Avon, the son of Merle and Helen Edmonson Gillette.
He married Minnie E. Morris on May 25, 1949, in Van Port, Ore. She died Jan. 30, 1996.
Surviving are four sons, Robert Colclasure, Hannibal, Mo., Charles Colclasure, Creve Coeur, and Willard Fuller and Danny Gillette, both of Peoria; a daughter, Betty Jansen, Creve Coeur; a brother, George Gillett, Avon, a sister, Phyllis Gillette, Abingdon; 26 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two stepsons and two step-daughters.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a past member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in Martin-Hollis Funeral Home, Bushnell, with the Rev. Randy Sanders officiating.
Burial was in Bushnell Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Cassandra Lee Comstock
Cassandra Lee Comstock, 34, Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Macomb, died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at the Sinai-Grace Hospital, Detroit, Mich.
She was born July 10, 1967, in Macomb, the daughter of Jerry and Jill (Humes) Tilton. She married Tracy Comstock May 23, 1987. He survives in Phoenix.
She is also survived by two sons, Jimi and Stevin, and twin daughters, Michelle and Nicole, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; her mother, Jill (Bob) Sutton, Macomb; her father, Jerry (Judy) Tilton, Vermont; her maternal grandmother, Mildred Humes, Macomb; two sisters, Angela (Russ) Thornton, Macomb, and Michelle (Jerry) Bannan, Washington; one half brother, Jeremy Tilton, Vermont; one half sister, Gina Tilton, Vermont; one stepbrother, Christopher (Deb) Sutton, Macomb; two stepsisters, Becky Sutton, Provo, Utah, and Abigail (John) Wondrasek, Hainsville; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather and her paternal grandparents.
Cassandra had attended Macomb schools and lived in Macomb until 1983, when she moved to Phoenix, Ariz.
Cremation rites were accorded. Memorial services were held Monday, July 15, 2002, at the Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home, Macomb. Private burial of ashes will be at a later time.
Memorials may be made to her Children’s Education Fund in care of Mid-America National Bank, Macomb.
Sharolyn Smock
Sharolyn F. Smock, 65, of Colchester, died at 9:37 a.m. Sunday, July 14, 2002, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.
She was born July 25,1936, in Macomb to Mark E. and Forest Reed Smock.
Surviving are one son, Alan of Colchester; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Leland (James) Smock of Abingdon; and two sisters, Jean Smock and Linda Beck, both of Colchester.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.
A licensed practical nurse, she worked at McDonough District Hospital and Colchester Nursing Home. She retired from The Elms in 1987. She was a graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Peoria.
Cremation has been accorded, and graveside services with burial of ashes will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Macomb. The Rev. Ron Green will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at Jones Mortuary.
Memorials may be made to Colchester Rescue Squad or MDH Home Health Care.
