Evelyn Smith

Evelyn Lucille Smith, age 64, of Mattoon, passed away at 11:46 p.m. Friday (April 20, 2001) at her home surrounded by her family.
Funeral services celebrating her life will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Kozisek officiating. Burial will follow in the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Evelyn was born Sept. 5, 1936 in Cumberland County, a daughter of Cayce Raymond and Ella McPherson Beck. She married Richard L. Smith on April 13, 1951 at Toledo. He survives.
Other survivors include four sons, Jimmy Lee Smith and wife Connie of Cowden, Edward Dean Smith and wife Pam, Dennis Ray Smith, and Danny Joe Smith, all of Mattoon; one daughter, Tammy Jo Weber and husband Carl of Mattoon; four brothers, Orville E. Beck and wife June of Mattoon, Raymond Beck of Loxa, Harold Dean "Butch" Beck and wife Sherrie of Windsor and Robert Lee Beck and wife Wanda of Mattoon; one sister, Karen Sue Batson and husband Paul of rural Lerna; six grandchildren, Kevin Smith of Gays, Carl Weber and Jason Weber, both of Mattoon, Cayce Applegate of Toledo, Kirshia Smith and Samantha Smith, both of Mattoon; two step-grandchildren, Tina Jordan and Matt Bullard, both of Mattoon; two step great-grandchildren, Jenny Jordan and Shawnda Jordan, both of Mattoon; and special friend, Leroy Daniels of Coles Station.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Smith was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She was formerly employed by the Mattoon Garment Factory for 22 years, retiring in 1987. She was the former owner and operator of Perry's Chuck Wagon and was employed at The Little Chef restaurants. In keeping with her love for people she cared for numerous older residents in the community. Evelyn was formerly a member of the Women of the Moose.
Pauline Morrison
St. Louis
Pauline L. Morrison, 84, of St. Louis, died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday (April 19, 2001) in her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home, Windsor with the Rev. Richard Eident officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Ash Grove Cemetery, near Windsor.
She was born Dec. 5, 1916 in Noble, IL., the daughter of Nathan Samuel and Christina Marie Koch Lanter. She married Fred White Dec. 15, 1939 in Mattoon. He died Oct. 28, 1956. She then married J. Paul Morrison Jan. 18, 1958 in Olney. He preceded her in death Feb. 11, 1983.
Surviving are sons, Fred S. White and wife Brenda of Evansville, IN, Paul J. White and wife Kathy of Alameda, Cal. and Phillip L. White and Nancy of Brentwood, Cal.; daughter, Linda C. Pecaut and husband Joe of St. Louis; step-son, Ronald Morrison and wife Jane and their family of Springfield; grandchildren, Christopher Paul White and Jacob Christopher Pecaut; and step-grandson, Ernie Paul Morrison.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Melvin Riley
Cowden
Melvin "Pat" Riley, 81, of Cowden, died at 5:35 a.m. Sunday (April 22, 2001) in his residence.
Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday in Mud Run Cemetery, near Cowden, with military rites by Herrick American Legion Post #839. No visitation is planned. Memorials may be given to Lincolnland Hospice. Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Riley was born on January 22, 1920 in Sebeka, Minn., the son of John and Olive Helen Connell Riley. He married Evelyn Marie Hooper on March 21, 1946. She died on Feb. 3, 1993.
Surviving are his brother, Mike Riley of Washington, and several nieces and nephews from the surrounding area including one special niece, Helen Blaine of Cowden that he lived with.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Riley, who was killed in W.W. II; and his parents.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II and was honorably discharged in 1943. He worked construction all of his life and was a member of Central Labor Union #171 of Charleston, NRA, and Herrick American Legion Post #839.
Lola Chappelear
formerly of Stewardson
Lola R. Chappelear, 91, of Effingham, formerly of Stewardson, died 12:02 a.m. Monday (April 23, 2001) in Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Effingham.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26 at the United Methodist Church, Stewardson, with the Rev. Tim Rhodes and the Rev. Andrew Procell officiating. Burial will be in Stewardson Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the church and one hour before service time at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be made to World's Children - Winter Haven Fla. and the Alzheimer's Association - Southern Illinois area chapter.
She was born June 1, 1909 in Shelby County, the daughter of William and Ella M. (Spearman) Kessler. She married Charles E. Chappelear June 7, 1931 at Stewardson. He died March 23, 1994.
Surviving are brother, Harold Kessler and wife Wilma of Stewardson; sister, Mrs. Oma McCormick of Stewardson; nephews, Bill Swank and wife Margaret of Neoga, Jerry B. Kessler and wife Lynne of Effingham, John Swank and wife Glenda of Washington, Ferd McCormick and wife Arlene of Stewardson; nieces, Betty Ann Quast and husband George of Plainfield, Jennie Lou Courson and husband Paul of Dieterich, Patsy Lenz and husband Larry of Strasburg, Debra Susan Tobey of Belleville; several great nieces and nephews; and great great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister.
She retired from teaching after 32 years. She taught at Mound School in Stewardson, Neoga, Deland, Elk Grove, and West Chester school districts. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Stewardson.

Edna Enoch, 79, of Mattoon, formerly of Findlay, died 8:20 a.m. at Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home, Mattoon.

Rev. Leo Mahnke
Shelbyville
Rev. Leo F. Mahnke, 84, of Shelbyville, died at 3.30 a.m. Wednesday (April 25, 2001) in Shelbyville Manor.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Cowden Free Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Smith, the Rev. Barry Long and the Rev. David Hudson officiating. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. Memorials may be given to Cowden Free Methodist Camp.
Rev. Mahnke was born on May 17, 1916 in Stewardson, the son of Fredrick E. R. and Eva Mae Devore Mahnke. He married Ethel Hudson on Feb. 5, 1936. She survives.
Also surviving are sons, Richard L. Mahnke and wife Ella of Princeton and Dale R. Mahnke and wife Linn of Shelbyville; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents; sister, Leatha Rueff; and one grandson, Wesley Dale Mahnke.
He graduated in 1934 from Stewardson High School. He was a retired farmer and was a minister for 15 years in churches at Tower Hill, Fancher, Salem, Lincoln and Effingham. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church for 62 years and currently was serving on the official board of the Cowden Free Methodist Church.
Eleanor Matlock

Eleanor M. Matlock, 82, of Tower Hill, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday (April 25, 2001) in her residence.
Funeral arrangements will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with the Rev. Cynthia Taylor officiating. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery, near Assumption. Memorials may be given to Shelby County Community Services.
Mrs. Matlock was born on March 9, 1919 in Stonington, the daughter of Leslie and Ida Shelton Tirey. She married Earl "Bill" Matlock on Aug. 28, 1938. He died on Jan. 8, 1987.
Surviving are her daughter, Janet Matlock of Shelbyville; sister, Reva Mae Reulecke of Moweaqua; grandson, David Dawson of Effingham; sisters-in-law, Leona Tirey of Shelbyville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband; parents; brothers, Cecil, Floyd and Merle Tirey; and sisters, Lucille Pyle and Frances Tirey.
She was a 1936 graduate of Assumption High School. She worked for the State of Illinois in Springfield in the Public Aid Drivers License Departments, CIPS in Pana, Shelbyville and Taylorville offices, and most recently the First Baptist Church of Pana where she served as church secretary. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shelbyville, Eastern Star of Tower Hill and also attended the Tower Hill United Methodist Church.
Cyril Voudrie

Cyril L. Voudrie, 74, of Tower Hill died 5:49 a.m. Tuesday (April 24, 2001) in Heritage Manor, Pana.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home, Pana, with the Rev. M. Thomas Swantner officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday with Masonic rites at 8 p.m. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Pana, with military rites by Pana Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4431. Memorials can be made to donor's choice.
Mr. Voudrie was born in Madison County on June 15, 1926, the son of Clarence and Oneta Knable Voudrie, He married Verla M. Smith in Cairo on Oct. 30, 1953.
He is survived by his wife; children, Leo Wayne Voudrie and wife Connie Sue of Herrick; Allen William Voudrie and wife Tina K. of Tower Hill; James Ronald Voudrie and wife Deeann K. of Herrick; Jean Ann Nicolas and husband Randy of Pana; grandchildren, Miranda Voudrie, Krystal Voudrie Brandi Voudrie, Connor Allen Voudrie, Marcus Allen Voudrie, Jennifer Juanita Voudrie, Ashley Nicolas and Erin Nicolas; brothers, Delmar and wife Sharon Voudrie of Pana; Elmer and wife Myrna Voudrie of Mattoon; Alfred and wife Greta Voudrie of Elk River, Minn.; Clarence Jr. and wife Sylvia Voudrie of Arkansas; Leto and wife Irene Voudrie of Moweaqua; Robert and wife Sandra Voudrie of Decatur; Ronald and wife Linda Voudrie of Decatur; Stanley and wife Mary Voudrie of Tremont; sisters, Leola and husband Ron Konecki of Chicago; Linda and husband Harold Baldock of Owaneco; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Voudrie of Pana, and Dorothy Voudrie of Terra Haute, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry on April 1, 1997; brothers, Cletus and Duaine Voudrie.
He was a retired farmer and lived in Pana, Herrick and Tower Hill areas all of his life. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Pana VFW Post 4431 and Pana Lodge 226 AF & AM.
Robert Sanders
Moweaqua
Robert J. "Judge" Sanders, 86, of Moweaqua died 5:13 p.m. Tuesday (April 24, 2001) in St. Mary's Hospital.
Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Seitz Funeral Home Moweaqua. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will be in Westside Cemetery, Moweaqua, with full military honors. Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Moweaqua.
Mr. Sanders was born in Decatur on May 11, 1914, the son of Emerson and Daisy Armstrong Sanders. He married Mary Elizabeth Bohlen on July 6, 1940, in Moweaqua.
Surviving are his daughters, Nancy Jane Brown and husband Garry, Mary Carol Schinzler and husband Halden, all of Decatur, grandchildren, Michael Garry Brown of Springfield, Todd R. Kneller and wife Kim of Peoria, Dr. Timothy D. Kneller and wife Natalie of Denver, Colo.; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Mary Elizabeth.
In 1946, Mr. Sanders was elected county judge in Shelby County. He served in that capacity until becoming a circuit judge in 1964. Upon retiring in 1976, he returned to Moweaqua, where he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, 50-year member of the American Legion, life member of the Moweaqua Masonic Lodge member of the Shelby County Farm Bureau and member of Moweaqua and Shelbyville Rotary Clubs.
He attended Millikin University, where he was a member of SAE fraternity and the university golf team. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Commerce and the College of Law He practiced law in Moweaqua until entering the Army in 1943 and served in the European Theater of Operations, where he was captain in the Judge Advocates Corps.
