Milton J. Beachey
ARTHUR - Milton J. Beachey, 81, of Arthur, IL, passed away at 3:00 a.m. Thursday, August 10,2000 at his residence rural Arthur, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 14, 2000 at the Arthur Mennonite Church 710 E. Park St., Arthur, IL. Rev. Phil Schrock and Rev. Paul Sieber will officiate. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, August 13, 2000 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Arthur Mennonite Church. Edwards Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Beachey was born July 23, 1919, in Arthur, IL, a son of Jacob D. and Lydia (Yoder) Beachey. He married Barbara Briskey in Hicksville, OH on October 26, 1944. He is survived by his wife: Barbara Beachey of Arthur, IL; 6 children: Larry and his wife Paula Beachey of Elkhart, IN, Wilmer and his wife Ruth Beachey of Bismarck, N.D., Bob and his wife Linda Beachey of LaMarque, TX, Rosa and her husband Kent Jantz of Walton, KS, Ernest and his wife Barbara Beachey of Clearwater, KS, Dorothy Beachey of Brookfield, IL; 12 grandchildren, Christopher, Phillip and his wife Carrie Beachey, Kendric and his wife Michelle, Brigitte, Joel and Matthew Beachey, Nathan and Wendel Beachey, Jason and Troy Jantz, Lindsey and Kelsey Kirkpatrick. He was preceded in death by 1 granddaughter, Karisa; 3 brothers, Daniel, Emory and Henry; 4 sisters, Ada Miller, Katie Ann Miller, Ella Otto and Minnie Mast.
Milton was a man of strong conviction. He was a member of the Arthur Mennonite Church where he served as Elder, Sunday School Teacher and Church Chorister and sang in special musical groups with the church. He was an avid reader and acquired his GED in 1991.
Milton was a prominent farmer in the Arthur area from 1944 until his retirement in 1983. He was also a rural mail carrier from which he also retired in 1983. He was a conscientious objector to the war having served in the Civilian Public Service from 1939 - 1944 in Iowa, California, Pennsylvania and Indiana.

Lucy Beem
SHELBYVILLE - Lucy E. Beem, 90, of Shelbyville, died at 8 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) in her residence.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville.
She was born on May 7, 1910, in rural Carrollton, the daughter of Perry Otis and Eunice Wood Short. She married Julian C. "Duke" Beem in 1933; he died in 1988.Surviving are one son, Perry Beem of Doylestown, Pa.; one daughter, Juliann Breeding of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Mary Liles of Rockford; several grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son, five brothers and one grandchild.
Mrs. Beem taught physical education at Shelbyville schools and in Westervelt. She was active in Scouting for many years. She served a short term as Shelby County sheriff in 1943 and was bookkeeper for the family business Beem's Buick Sales. Mrs. Beem was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 69 of Shelbyville. Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
Zora Clements
SAN DIEGO - Zora Small "Clem" Clements, 86, of San Diego, formerly of Arthur, died at 11 a.m. July 26, 2000, at Casa Dea Campanas Health Center in San Diego.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bourbon Cemetery with Pastor Greg Busboom officiating. No visitation is scheduled. The Shrader Funeral Home in Arthur is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Oct. 19, 1913, in Wheeling, a son of Frederick Visic and Ina Small Clements. He married Mabel Blaase in 1952; she survives.
Also surviving are relatives in the Arthur area.He was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.
Mr. Clements was a retired engineer for the Space Lab of Rockwell International of California. He was an Army captain in World War II.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Elizabeth Hospice.
William Pigg
PARIS - William Elisha "Eli" Pigg, 23, of Paris, died at 3:13 a.m. Friday (Aug. 11, 2000) at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. The funeral will be 5 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church in Paris. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 2 p.m. until service time Sunday at the church. The Sutton and Son Funeral Home of Paris is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Jan. 26, 1977, in Paris, the son of William Earl and Pennie Callaway Pigg. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Pennie and Dennis Duzan of Paris; his father and stepmother, William and Janice Pigg of Hagerstown, Md.; one brother, Lane Pigg of Paris; one sister, Emily Pigg of Paris; and grandparents, Hazel Callaway of Oakland, and Daniel and Evelyn Pigg of Paris. He was preceded in death by his grandfather.
Mr. Pigg was a machinist at Doemelt Corp in Arcola. He was a member of the ABATE of Illinois.

Joseph Schumacher
SAVOY - Joseph M. Schumacher, 88, of Savoy, died at 4:10 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 10, 2000) at Carle Arbours in Savoy. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. George Remm officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield. The Owens Funeral Home, Champaign, is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born in April 21, 1912, in Effingham, the son of F.H. and Clara Feldhake Schumacher. He married Roslyn Hirsh in 1972; she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, David Schumacher of Springfield and Paul Schumacher of Mattoon; one daughter, Clarissa Ann Heiss of Charleston; two stepchildren, Stuart Hirsh of Anchorage, Alaska, and Elissa Hirsch Yeend of Palo Alto, Calif.; one sister, Veronica Ream of Arlington Heights; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Mr. Schumacher owned and operated the Ben Franklin Store in Mattoon and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Kenneth Upton
MATTOON - Kenneth Howard "Yogi" Upton, 66, of Mattoon, died at 12:35 a.m. on Friday (Aug. 11, 2000) at his residence.
The graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday with military rites by the VFW Post 4325 at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Schilling Funeral Home.
He was born in Mattoon Nov. 12, 1933, a son of Howard Allen and Nelda Frances Sanders Upton. He married Charlotte Bown in 1960; she survives.
Also surviving are one brother, Clarence W. Upton of Mattoon, and two sisters, Marjorie Hays of Arizona and Vivian Cohea of Mattoon.
Mr. Upton was an Air Force veteran. He retired from General Electric in 1991 after 34 years with the company. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 88, Odd Fellows Lodge No. 260 and the Eagles Club No. 3438.

James W. Zimmerle
MATTOON - James W. Zimmerle, age 75, of Mattoon, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 10, 2000, at the residence of his daughter.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August, 14, 2000 at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center, with Father Herman Niebrugge officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, with Moose rites at 7:00 p.m. and Biblical Wake service at 7:15 p.m.
James W. Zimmerle was born October 29, 1924, at Olney, Illinois, a son of William Reuben and Alta Elizabeth Campbell Zimmerle. He married Dorothy Mae Grieshammer December 22, 1951 at California, Missouri, she preceded in death May 3, 1997. Also surviving are his children, Mrs. John (Leann) Polston and Mrs. Van (Celeste) Webb of Mattoon and Mike Zimmerle and his wife Linda of Charleston; grandchildren, John Polston, Jr. and his wife Anita of Mattoon, Troy Polston and his wife Renee of Mattoon Theresa, Vanessa, Meredith, and Mitchell Webb of Mattoon, Jarred and Jessica Zimmerle of Charleston. Great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Micaela, Nicholas, and Andrew Polston of Mattoon also survive. He was preceded in death by one son, Jim Zimmerle, Jr. and two sisters.
Mr. Zimmerle was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. A 1944 graduate of Mattoon High School, he was co-designer of the school crest and helped establish and served as president of the first Letterman's Club. Jim retired in 1989 as a chemical operator at USI Tuscola. He served as governor of Mattoon Moose Lodge 803 in 1976-77, 1977-78, 1979-80, 1985-86 and 1996-97. He has held all the offices in the order - many several times during his 25 years of service on the Board of Officers. Jim earned his Moose Legion Degree on August 20, 1967, Moose Fellowship on October 3, 1975 and the highest degree of the Order was awarded Jim in May of 1983, Mattoon Lodge Moose of the Year and Illinois Moose Association Moose of the Year in 1984. He was a member of the American Legion and Eagle's Lodge. Mr. Zimmerle was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Sandy Carter
SULLIVAN - Mrs. Sandra "Sandy" Risley Carter, 50, of Sullivan, died at 9:45 a.m., Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2000) in her home.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan, with the Rev. Mark Taylor officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour before service time in the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan. Memorials: St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Mrs. Carter was born in Macon County on July 17, 1950, the daughter of George and Virginia E. Mitchell Risley. She married Mike Carter on September 26, 1969, in Sullivan.
Surviving are her husband, daughter, Nanette Lilly and husband Allen and granddaughter Alyssa Lilly all of Bethany; parents, George and Virginia Risley of Sullivan; brother, George Risley and wife Vicki of Glen Ellyn; sisters, Linda Bolsen and husband Dan of Pawnee, Cindy Tarr and husband Gregg of Sullivan; 5 nephews and 1 niece.
Sandy was a homemaker and her greatest pleasure in life was being a wife, mother and gammy to her little sunshine Alyssa.
Robert England
SULLIVAN - Robert L. England, 56, of Sullivan, died at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) in Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur.
Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan, with the Dr. David Leslie officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be with military rites in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan. Memorials: Moultrie County Chapter of American Heart Association.
Mr. England, was born on July 15, 1944, in Mattoon, the son of Grantie and Lucy Mae Gillenwater England. He was in the service during the Vietnam Conflict, and retired from A.E. Staley's as an operator in the Starch Department. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Sullivan, and associated with the Methodist Church. V.F.W. Post # 6410, Sullivan, Lovington American Legion Post #429, Past Commander of American Legion Post #68 in Sullivan. Former Sullivan Volunteer Fireman. He married Janet A. Wood on September 5, 1964, in Sullivan and she survives.
Also surviving are daughters, Bobbi L. Campbell and husband Brad of Mattoon, Chrissie C. Hackert and husband Chuck of Decatur; brothers, Charles England, Wayne Gillenwater, Sonny England all of Sullivan; sisters, Holly Shell and Wilma Graham of Sullivan, Eva Schrodt of St. Louis, Wanda James of LaPalma, CA.; 2 sister-in-law, Edith England of Sullivan, Myrna England of Sarasota, FL. And his loving companion his dog Katie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, one sister, 1 niece and 1 nephew.
