Fern Hocking
LOVINGTON - Fern Emaline King Hocking, 73, of Lovington, died at 6 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 6, 2000) at her daughter's home in Sullivan.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan, with Pastor Dave Starr officiating. Visitation will be private. The Shrader Funeral Home, Arthur, is in charge of the arrangements. She was born April 21, 1927, in Reading, Penn., a daughter of John Carlisle and Catherine Susan Shapell Lutz. She married Ralph F. King Jr. in 1952; he died in 1972. She married Kenneth Burleigh Hocking in 1978; he survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Frank S. King of Washington and Rodney W. King of Lovington; one daughter, Catherine S. England of Sullivan; one stepson; four stepdaughters; four brothers, William Lutz of Reading, Penn., Carl Lutz of Angels Camp, Calif., John Lutz Jr. of Bloomsburg, Penn., and Norman Lutz of Sinking Spring, Penn.; three sisters, Betty Reichardt, Harriet Hague and Susan Blessing, all of Reading, Penn.; five grandchildren; and 13 step-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, one stepdaughter and two step-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hocking had worked at Brown Shoe, Sullivan, and was a waitress and restaurant manager for many years. She was a member of the Lovington First Christian Church.

Parcel Laws
PEORIA, Ariz. - Wesley Parcel Laws, 89, of Peoria, Ariz., formerly of Hindsboro and Charleston, died at 9:30 a.m. Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Boswell Hospital in Sun City, Ariz.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bushton Christian Church with the Rev. Charles Dye officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home.
He was born June 10, 1911, in Westfield, the son of John Henry Laws and Elizabeth Parcel Laws. He married Dorothy Julia Stanfield in 1936; she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, John Laws of Texas and Roy Laws of Illinois; two daughters, Esther Macklin of Arizona and Betty Bouffard of Ohio; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one grandchild.
Mr. Laws retired in 1979 after 11 years as a stationary engineer at Eastern Illinois University. He was a member of the Bushton Christian Church.
Lucille Niccum
GREENUP - Lucille Niccum, 84, of Greenup, died at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at her residence.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Bishop Funeral Home in Greenup with the Rev. Tim Pearce officiating. Burial will be in Jewett Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Funeral Home, Greenup.
She was born May 3, 1916, in Woodbury, the daughter of Alfred Cox and Lola M. Kingery Cox. She married Richard Niccum in 1935; he died in 1996. Surviving are three sons, Max Niccum of Greenup, and William and Rodger Niccum, both of Toledo; two daughters, Madonna Ervin of Greenup and Norma Griffith of Hidalgo; three brothers, Johnny and Frank Cox of Creve Coeur, and Wayne Cox of Millersville, Tenn.; three sisters, Opal Myers and Barbara Bauguss of Jewett and Ruby Kelly of Creve Coeur; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Niccum was employed for 20 years at Ettlebrick Shoe Factory and retired in 1981.

David Simon
CHATHAM - David "Dave" Mark Simon, 40, of Chatham, formerly of Charleston, died at 7:01 a.m. Wednesday (Aug. 9, 2000) at Memorial Medical Center.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Chatham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Anderson officiating. The Staab Polk Memorial Home in Chatham is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Feb. 19, 1960, in Flint, Mich., the son of Delbert Simon and Betty Atkins Simon. He married Cheryl R. Meyer in 1984; she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Ian and Derek Simon, both at home; one daughter, Kristen Simon at home; mother, Betty Simon of Charleston; father and stepmother, Delbert and Lavita Simon of Rockford; one brother, Richard Simon of Pekin; two half brothers, Brand and Scott Simon, both of Rockford; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Simon worked in an after school program for School District 186, had a gourmet mushroom business and was a student of SIU/LLCC Respiratory Therapy. He was a member of the Chatham United Methodist Church and Amnesty International.

Betty L. Whitkanack
CHARLESTON, IL - Betty Whitkanack, age 69, of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. A memorial service celebrating Betty's life will be held on Saturday, August 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, 320 West Elm Street, Westfield, Illinois with Reverend Joe Grozik officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Adams Funeral Chapel.
Betty was born February 18, 1931, in Metcalf, Illinois a daughter of Jesse and Delphia (Warmouth) Scott. She married James Whitkanack on November 28, 1947 in Paris, Illinois.
Survivors include her husband, James of Charleston; three sons, Terry D. Whitkanack and his wife Darlene of Winfield, Illinois, Del L. Whitkanack and his wife Kathy of Wheaton, Illinois and J. Mark Whitkanack and his wife Cindy of Sullivan, Illinois; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six sisters, Beulah Fuller and her husband Frank, and Lena Jewell all of Paris, Illinois, Evelyn Horsley and her husband Ted, Mary Sanders and her husband Roy, and Jean Pruiett all of Marshall, Illinois and Beverly Whitkanack and her husband Ken of Lawrenceville, Illinois; and one brother, Ron Scott and his wife Marcella of Denver, Colorado. She was preceded by her parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Betty was a graduate of Marshall High School and was employed by the Westfield School System for sixteen years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Westfield and her love for her church and her church family was apparent as she volunteered her time in many different areas of church work. She also had a tremendous love for her family and she will be fondly remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Betty enjoyed reading, flower gardening and was a collector of knick-knacks.

Edward Colbert Jr.
CHAMPAIGN - Edward P. Colbert Jr., 75, of Mattoon, died at 5:45 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 5, 2000) at ManorCare Health Services, Urbana.
The funeral mass will be 4 p.m. Thursday at the St. Patrick Church in Urbana. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be private. He was born May 15, 1925, in Memphis, Tenn., the son of Edward P. Colbert Sr. and Edith McBride Colbert. He married Elaine Messore in 1956; she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Julian Colbert of Boston, David Colbert of Baltimore and Edward McBride Colbert of Columbia, Md.; eight daughters, Maura Colbert of Seattle, Anique Colbert of Boston, Nina Colbert of New York, Mimi Colbert of Evanston, Angela Colbert Merchant of Chicago, Elizabeth Colbert of Indianapolis, Teresa Colbert of Dallas and Caritas Colbert of Boston; one brother, Robert S. Colbert, Sikeston, Mo.; and one sister, Carol Colbert Noonan of Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Mr. Colbert was a retired professor of Medieval History at Eastern Illinois University; Phi Beta Kappa; associate editor of Church History New Catholic Encyclopedia; the diplomatic courier of the U.S. State Department for Europe and Asia; and a U.S. army veteran of World War II.

Robert England
SULLIVAN - Robert L. England, 56, of Sullivan, died at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Arrangements are incomplete at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan.
Charles Juhnke
WINDSOR - Charles William Juhnke, 65, of Windsor, died at 3:58 p.m. Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home, Windsor, with the Rev. Richard Eident officiating. Burial will be in the Windsor Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Visitation will be 12:30 p.m. until service time on Sunday.
He was born Dec. 26, 1934, in Shelby County, the son of Charles William Juhnke and Elizabeth Lovins Juhnke.
Surviving are two sons, Charles William Juhnke of Bozeman, Mont., and Scott Juhnke of Windsor; two sisters, Helen Klepzig of Shelbyville and Dorothy Shafer of Windsor; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two sons, one daughter, one grandchild and a foster brother.
Mr. Juhnke was a retired farmer and retired from Blaw-Knox in Mattoon. He was a member of the Windsor Masonic Lodge, the Ansar Shrine and the Windsor Christian Church.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital.
Frances Kasinac
GREENUP - Frances B. Kasinac, 88, of Greenup, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at the Heartland Manor Nursing Center in Casey.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Bishop Funeral Home, Greenup, with the Rev. Rick Emrich officiating. Burial will in the Montrose Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born Oct. 8, 1911, in Jewett, the daughter of Horrace E. Stephens and Ruby Hopper Stephens. She married Stanley Kasinac in 1947; he survives.
Also surviving are one sister, Rhea Hogan of San Bernadino, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Mrs. Kasinac was a pianist and piano teacher. She was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church and the U.S. Civil Service Commission.
