WESTFIELD - Anthony Louis Garbi, 72, of Barnett, Mo., formerly of Westfield, died at 10:12 p.m. Thursday (July 27, 2000) at the home of his son.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Markwell Chapel in Westfield with Father Jeff Grant officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Westfield. Visitation will be begin at noon Sunday at the funeral chapel.
He was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Chicago, the son of Louis and Beatrice Charlebois Garbi.
He married Dorothy M. Miller in 1962; she died in 1993.
Surviving are one son, Louis Garbi of Barnett, Mo.; two stepsons, George and David Beck; two sisters, Linda McAliffe of Genoa City, Wis., and Renee Lilly of Gary, Ind.; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Garbi was a retired salesman for International Typewriter Exchange in Chicago. He was an Army veteran of the German Occupation after World War II.
Corinne Hendy
SULLIVAN - V. Corinne Sefton Hendy, 88, of Sullivan, formerly of Mattoon, died at 10:05 a.m. Friday (July 28, 2000) in the Illinois Masonic Home.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Illinois Masonic Home Chapel, Sullivan, with the Rev. Mike Brandenburger officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan.
She was born Jan. 3, 1912, in Xenia, the daughter of Pirl and Carrie Belle Colclasure Henderson. She married Robert Sefton in 1934; he died in 1963. She married Joe Hendy in 1973; he died in 1978.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Wirth of Sullivan and Sherry Adams of Elizabethtown, Ky.; one sister, Iona Allison of Sterling; four grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Mrs. Hendy was a member of the Mattoon Christian Church.

Helen Morton
TRILLA - Helen Joy Morton, 87, of Trilla died at 11:39 a.m. Friday (July 28, 2000) at her residence.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Buck Grove Community Church with Pastor Ed Stephens officiating. Burial will be in Beals Cemetery, rural Trilla. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home.
She was born March 14, 1913, in Trilla, the daughter of Wilbur and Bessie Kelly Brown.
She married William J. Morton in 1930; he died in 1996.
Surviving are one son, Dale Lynn Morton of Trilla; one sister, Ada Mae Beals of Lerna; one half brother, Hark Larwance of Litchfield; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; and 3 step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters.
Mrs. Morton was a homemaker. She was a member of Buck Grove Community Church and a former member of the Eastern Star.

Alvin Bennett
MATTOON - Alvin L. Bennett, 63, of Mattoon, formerly of Charleston, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday (July 26, 2000) at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Mattoon.
A graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Roselawn Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Turner officiating. No visitation is planned. The Harper-Swickard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was born Dec. 19, 1936, in Charleston, the son of Clifford and Eva Bennett.
He married Lenora Miller in 1975; she died in 1987.
Surviving is one brother, Gerald Bennett of Orlando, Fla.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers.
Mr. Bennett had worked in several area factories.

Elaine Burke
CHARLESTON - Elaine Burke, age 78, of Charleston, entered into rest on Saturday, July 22, 2000 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Services celebrating Elaine's life will be held on Monday, July 31, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Becky Turner officiating. Services and visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston. Visitation will be held Sunday evening, July 30, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Interment will be at Roselawn Cemetery.
Elaine was born June 11, 1922, in Bullpit, Illinois, the daughter of Vernon O. and Zella (Brown) Bloxam.
She married Thomas M. Burke on September 9, 1942 in Mattoon, Illinois. He preceded her in death earlier this year on May 18.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Gire and her husband Dann of Hoffman Estates, Illinois and Carol Ellis and her husband Jerry of Charleston; four grandchildren, Jamie Addams and her husband Jon Montgomery of Bartlett, Illinois, Michael Addams of Charleston and Lauren Gire and Morgan Gire, both of Hoffman Estates, and two step-grandchildren, Jerry Lee Ellis and his wife Angela of Greenup, Illinois and Joi Ellis of Anoka, Minnesota.
Elaine was an active member of the Disciples of Christ Christian Church and the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Volunteer Guild. She had also served as Coles County Republican Chairwoman. Her hobbies included needlework and sewing as well as traveling with her husband Tom and vacationing and camping with her family. Many will remember her as secretary for her husband Tom during his tenure as Circuit Judge in the Fifth Judicial Circuit. Elaine was a graduate of Mattoon High School and Utterbacks Business College.

Leota Dukeman
ARTHUR - Leota Dukeman, 93, of Arthur, died at 8:40 a.m. Thursday (July 27, 2000) at the Arthur Home, Arthur.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, Atwood, with the Rev. Kenneth Roedder officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery, rural Arthur. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She was born Feb. 26, 1907, in rural Arthur, the daughter of Henry Claus and Elizabeth Kolb Schultz.
She married Millard Lee Dukeman in 1935; he died in 1991.
Surviving are one son, George Lee Dukeman of Arthur; two half brothers, John Schultz of Arthur and Leonard Schultz of Congress, Ariz.; two half sisters, Leona Hughes of Arthur and Juanita Benson of Brandon, Ms.; one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, one half brother and two half sisters.
Mrs. Dukeman was a homemaker and a member of the Zion United Methodist Church of Christ, rural Arthur.

Mabel Harner
KANSAS - Mabel Harner, 82, of Kansas, died at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Paris Health Care Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Greenwell Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Giles officiating. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery in Clark Center. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
She was born April 27, 1918, in Clark County, the daughter of Ernest and Rosella Phillips Wallace.
She married Dean Harner in 1942; he survives.
Also surviving are one son, Dean Fredrick Harner of Fortaleza, Brazil; one daughter, Freda Ruthella Watts of Kansas; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one grandchild.
Mrs. Harner was a member of the Ashmore Baptist Church, Ashmore.
J. D. Keown
FINDLAY - J. D. Keown, 86, of Findlay, died at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday July 26, 2000, in Sheryl's Place in Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Lockart and Sons Funeral Home in Findlay with Rev. Ray Roberts officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday. Burial in the Marrowbone Twp. Cemetery in Bethany.Memorials: Sheryl's Place.
J.D. was born Feb. 27, 1914, in Fordsville, Ky, the son of George S. and Eliza Wells Keown. He married Freda L. Walter Aug. 13, 1931 in Bethany and she survives.
Also surviving: son, Don R. Keown and wife, Bonnie of Findlay; daughter, Doris J. Matlock and husband Don of Shelbyville; son Larry N. Keown and wife Ruth Ann of Lakewood; daughter, Linda A. Getz and husband Jack of Findlay; nine grandchildren, Cindy Gollus of Findlay, Vickie Martin of Findlay, David Keown of Findlay, Lonnie Matlock of Shelbyville, Randy Keown of Shelbyville, Becki Keown of Jacksonville, Todd Keown of Lakewood, Jeff Getz of Mt. Zion and Jody Getz of Findlay; twenty-one great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; brother, Charles (Short) Keown and wife, Louise of Findlay and sister-in-law, Louise Keown of Bethany.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
J.D. was a retired farmer in the St. Mary's Community, Findlay.

Helen Ryan
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Helen Marie Ryan, 89, of Terre Haute, Ind., formerly of the Mattoon area, died Wednesday (July 26, 2000) at her residence.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's University Parish Church in Terre Haute, Ind. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
She was born Dec. 14, 1910, in Mattoon, a daughter of Elmer and Mary Morgan Phipps. She married George Thomas Ryan in 1933; he died in 1965.
Surviving are three daughters, Georgiann Wilson of Effingham, Marylla Millard of Terre Haute, Ind., and Betty Frisch of Bloomington; two brothers, Don Phipps of Pebble Beach, Calif., and Maurice Phipps of Surprise, Ariz.; two sisters, Isabelle Corbet of Shreveport, La., and Marjorie Church of Avon, Ind.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ryan was a former employee of the Mattoon Journal Gazette, a retired housemother of DePauw University, former owner of Ryan's Daughters Tearoom and Dress Shop in Effingham, and regional manager for the Welcome Wagon. She was a member of St. Joseph's University Parish of Terre Haute, Ind., and former member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Mattoon.
