Lucille McCoy

WATSON - Lucille McCoy, 78, of Watson, died at 1:22 p.m. Tuesday (July 25, 2000) at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Watson Baptist Church, Watson. Burial will be in the Watson Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Pagel Funeral Home, Watson, and one hour before the service at the church.

She was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Fountain Run, Ky., the daughter of Tomkie and Annie L. Kelsey Thomas.

She married Bedford L. McCoy, in 1944; he died in 1989.

Surviving are four sons, Tom McCoy of Watson, Kenneth McCoy of Effingham, John McCoy of Mattoon and Charles McCoy of Lake Paradise; two daughters, Annie L. Connor of Effingham and Bonnie Sue Pontious of Watson; one brother, Dewey Thomas of Smith Grove, Ky.; four sisters, Grace Brown, Bertie L. Goode, Irene Dismon and Ruby Dismon all of Fountain Run, Ky.; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, one sister and two grandchildren.

Mrs. McCoy was a housewife and a member of the Rough Hills Baptist Church of Rough Hills, Ky.

Memorials may be made to the Watson Baptist Church.

Maxine Shallenberger

SHELBYVILLE - Maxine Shallenberger, 77, of Shelbyville, died at 2 a.m. Wedensday (July 26, 2000) in her residence.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetary, near Shelbyville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She was born June 20, 1923, in Shelby County, the daughter of Christian August and Myrtle Dell Page Ruff.

Surviving are one daughter, Jamie Horsman of Shelbyville; one brother, Howard Ruff of Pana; one sister, Betty Patrick of Pana; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Hazel Witherspoon

CLINTON, Ind. - Hazel Edith Witherspoon, 76, of Clinton, Ind., formerly of Paris, died at 3 a.m. Wednesday (July 26, 2000) in West Central Community Hospital, Clinton, Ind.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, Paris. Burial will be in Edgar Cemetery, Paris. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She was born April 20, 1924, in Chrisman, a daughter of Charlie Ayers and Edith Lystner Ayres.

She married James W. Witherspoon in 1946; he survives.

Also surviving are four sons, Donald Witherspoon of Paris, and Jimmy, Larry and Jerry Witherspoon, all of Clinton, Ind.; five daughters, Nancy Callahan and Betty Lucas, both of Mattoon, Shirley Moreton of Appleton, Wis., Mary Gass of Charleston and Wanda Witherspoon of Clinton, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, two brothers and two sisters.

Darlene Brewster

DECATUR - Darlene F. Brewster, 43, of Decatur, died at 7:20 p.m. Sunday (July 23, 2000) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. The Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born Dec. 30, 1956, in Greenville, S.C., the daughter of Richard L. Askren and Helen Harris.

Surviving are one daughter, Joni Webber of Lewiston, Mich.; her father, Richard Askren, and his wife, Pat, of West Union; one brother, Richard H. Askren of Charleston; three sisters, Venora Oxley of Weirton, Ohio, Kathy Applegate of Charleston and Barbara Lawson of Mattoon; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother and one daughter.

Mrs. Brewster was a bartender at the Decatur Country Club.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Betty Galbreath

NEOGA - Betty Galbreath, 86, of Neoga, formerly of Ashmore, died at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday (July 25, 2000) at Heartland Christian Village, Neoga.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, Mattoon, with the Rev. Robert Clark officiating. Burial will be in Ashmore Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

She was born Nov. 6, 1913, in Redmon, a daughter of Roy and Mattie Brill Gill.

She married Glenn Galbreath in 1934; he died in 1959.

Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn Brosam and Glenda Wright of Mattoon; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Mrs. Galbreath was a clerk for Kirlin's Hallmark. She was a member of the Ashmore Presbyterian Church.

Memorials may be made to the Heartland Christian Village.

Harold James

EFFINGHAM - Harold Glen James, 80, of Effingham, formerly of Mattoon, died at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday (July 25, 2000) at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham.

Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Effingham.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Johnson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.

James Kennedy

SULLIVAN - James E. Kennedy, 65, of Sullivan, died at 9:20 p.m. Monday (July 24, 2000) in his home.

The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan, with Ron Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Findlay Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. Kennedy was born January 15, 1935, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Alta Mae Shelton Kennedy.

Jim was a member of the Highway Church of Christ and was retired from General Cable in Monticello.

He married Doris Janet Perry on August 30, 1958, in Findlay, IL, and she survives.

Other survivors include a son, Chris Kennedy and wife Melissa of Mattoon; daughters, Brenda Kennedy of Lexington, KY, Diana Harpster Kindel and her husband Greg of Banks, Oregon; grandson, Colton James Kennedy of Mattoon; granddaughters, Jennifer and Jamie Harpster of Banks, Oregon and Shelby Kennedy of Mattoon; sister, Betty Elliston of Mt. Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his mother, one sister and a son-in-law.

Jon Tolen

SHELBYVILLE - Jon R. "Rocky" Tolen, 62, of Shelbyville, died at 11:05 a.m. Monday (July 24, 2000) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Howe and Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville with the Rev. E. Wade Helmkamp officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He was born July 25, 1937, in Shelbyville, a son of Robert and Jenta Phipps Tolen.

He married Sandra S. West in 1966; she survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Tammy Keller of Ste. Marie, Teresa LaFoon of Champaign and Tara Tolen of Shelbyville; two brothers, Jim Tolen of Bloomington, Ind., and Doug Tolen of Tower Hill; one sister, Jo Ellen Gantner of Florida; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Tolen had worked at Imperial Bondware, Shelbyville, since 1983 and formerly at Borg-Warner, in Decatur.

He was an army veteran.

Robert Trussell

SULLIVAN - Robert L. "Buck" Trussell, 71, of Sullivan, died at 12:24 a.m. Saturday (July 22, 2000) at St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur.

D.C. "PAPPY" "PORKY" Wishard

Duane Charles Wishard, age 77, of Mattoon, passed away at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, July 21, 2000, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

Kathryn Beardsley

GREENUP - Kathryn Rhea Beardsley, 84, of Greenup, died at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday (July 19, 2000) at the Cumberland Nursing Center in Greenup.
