Sylvia Patrick

PONTOON BEACH - Sylvia I. "Sybil" Patrick, 80, of Pontoon Beach, formerly of Windsor, died Monday (Aug. 28, 2000) at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. today at the Werner-Mick Funeral Home with the Rev. Gus Falter officiating. Burial will be in Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon.

She was born Dec. 6, 1919, in Windsor, the daughter of Elva T. and Burda Trigg Williamson.

She married Edgar Patrick in 1937; he survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Robert Patrick of Granite City, Richard Patrick of Claremore, Okla., and Donald Patrick of Louisana, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Patrick had worked at Charlie's Restaurant in Granite City for 22 years.

Memorials may be made to Catholic Charities.

Florence L. Carpenter

CHARLESTON - Mrs. Florence L. Carpenter, age 79, of Charleston and formerly of Arlington Heights, Illinois passed away on Monday, August 28, 2000 at Prairie View Care Center of Charleston.

Memorial Services celebrating her life will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Carpenter was born in France on November 21, 1920 the daughter of Henri and Angele (Gutfriend) Leuthardt and immigrated to this country in 1925.

She married Russell Carpenter, a journalist, in 1957 and the couple moved to Illinois in 1973.

She is survived by her son, Christopher Carpenter, formerly of Charleston and now residing in Jackson, Michigan and his fiance, Grace Gibson also of Jackson, Michigan; one sister, Madliene Bernard and her husband Roger of Amhurst, New Hampshire; and one brother, Henry Leuthardt of East Moriches, New York.

She was preceded by her parents.

Mrs. Carpenter's father, Henri Leuthardt, introduced the espalier, a trained fruit tree to the United States, and in 1939, she and her father were asked to present the espalier tree at a three-month exhibition at the New York World's Fair. Their work was permanently displayed at Thomas Jefferson's home in Mt. Vernon, and at other historic sites throughout the country.

Mrs. Carpenter was a graduate of Trinity University in Washington, D.C. She worked from 1943 until 1951 at the National Cancer Institute, where she was instrumental in developing and conducting experiments relating to cancer. With her colleague, Dr. Victor Hamburger, she published more than fifty papers relating to their research. The pair was recognized by the National Institute of Health for their groundbreaking work.

Memorials in honor of Florence may be made to the Mid-Illinois Big Brothers/Big Sisters in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, Illinois 61920.

Julio Florini

Sullivan - Julio "Jibby" Florini, 81, of Sullivan, died at 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church, Sullivan, conducted by Rev. Dr. David Leslie and Rev. Leonard Moore. Burial with military rites will be at the Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church, Sullivan.

McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan, in charge of arrangements.

Memorials suggested to the Lincolnland Hospice, or the Sullivan Community Education Foundation.

Mr. Florini was born October 15, 1918, in Standard, IL, the son of Joseph and Argia Bertoni Florini.

He was the retired owner of Jibby's Restaurant in Sullivan, a W.W. 2 Army Veteran, a member of the First Christian Church, Sullivan, American Legion Post #68, Sullivan, and the Sullivan Ambucs.

He married Ruth V. Wieneke on February 17, 1940 in Webster Grove, MO. They have been married for 60 years. She survives, along with a son, Joseph V. Florini of Sullivan; daughters, Sharon Nielsen of State College, PA, and Sue Crawford of Sullivan. 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, and 1 brother.

Charles Montgomery

CHARLESTON - Charles. M. "Chuck" Montgomery, 64, of Spokane, Wash., formerly of Charleston, died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000) at his residence. The funeral will be held at a later date in Spokane.

Adams Funeral Chapel, Charleston, is in charge of the local arrangements.

He was born Jan. 4, 1936, in Carbondale, the son of Charles J. "Doc" and Elizabeth Mitchell Montgomery.

Surviving are his father, Charles, and stepmother, Marian, both of Charleston; four daughters, Mary Latham, Jean Gardner and Molly Kuffner, all of Seattle, and Meg McMullen of Spokane, Wash.; two brothers, John Montgomery of Big Rapids, Mich., and Joe Montgomery of Greenville; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother.

Gorden Pruitt

Gorden William "Gordie" Pruitt, age 71, of Westfield, Illinois, passed away at 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 29, 2000, at his residence.

Gorden was born at Hardinsburg, Breckinridge County, Kentucky on July 3, 1929, a son of Goble William and Sylvia Nichols Pruitt.

He married Violet Landon Wuersch on December 22, 1972 at Charleston, Illinois.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Pruitt of Westfield; one son, Ben Wuersch and wife Marilyn "Mem" of Charleston; four brothers, Jim Pruitt and wife Karen of Mattoon, Leroy Winings and wife Grace of Sarasota, Fla., Donald Winings of Mattoon and Larry Winings and wife Tina of Charleston; four sisters, Joanne Johnson of Mattoon, Mary Ann Casey and husband Bill of Bremerton, Wash., Shirley Price of Sarasota, Fla., and Judy Winings of Mattoon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arley McAdams and Warren Pruitt; and four sisters, Edith McAdams, Nadine Sanders, Donna Easton and Ethel Dickinson.

Gorden attended Mattoon schools.

He served two tours of duty with the U.S. Army Combat Engineers 7th Infantry Division. He was wounded February 13, 1951 in Korea. He was a 100% Disabled Veteran, a Lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and Lifetime member of the Veterans Of Foreign Wars.

No service will be held.

The Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Rosalie Ramsey

GREENUP - Rosalie Ramsey, 78, of Greenup, died at 9:51 p.m. Monday (Aug. 28, 2000) at St. Anthony Hospital in Effingham.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Markwell and Son Funeral Home, Casey, with Kyle E. Stoops officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive-Kickapoo Cemetery, south of Martinsville. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

She was born Oct. 1, 1921, in Casey, the daughter of Henry and Nora Cook Phillips.

She married Robert W. Ramsey; he died in 1976.

Surviving are two sons, Robert "Sonny" Ramsey Jr. of Casey and John Ramsey of Greenup; five daughters, Rosanna Boyd, Jean James and Vickie Scales, all of Greenup, and Pat Staley and Jane Rincker, both of Olney; one sister, Leota Queen of Wyoming, Mich.; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Ramsey was a homemaker, and a member of Casey Moose Lodge and the Mattoon Eagles Lodge.

Ruth Irene Smith

MATTOON - Ruth Irene Smith, 82, of Mattoon, passed away at 12:34 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at Mattoon Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 31, 2000 at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Reverend John Crutcher officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Ruth was born November 6, 1917 at Vandalia, Illinois, daughter of Guy Edward and Goldie Edna Eakin Phipps.

She married William Russell Smith, October 4, 1939 at Morganfield, Kentucky; he passed away February 9, 1999.

Survivors include one son, Leon K. Smith and his wife Donna of Lerna and a granddaughter, Jodi Smith of Effingham. A brother, James "Bud" Phipps of Neoga and three sisters, Mrs. Eileen Heath, Mrs. Kathleen Martin and Mrs. Clyde (Betty) Henderson all of Mattoon also survive.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Ruth was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mattoon.

Bonnie Young

SPRINGFIELD - Bonnie L. Young, 69, of Springfield, formerly of Mattoon, died at 6:35 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 27, 2000) at Memorial Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the West Side Christian Church with the Rev. Charles Lee officiating. Visitation will be 2 p.m. until service time on Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery at a later date.

The Bisch and Son Funeral Home, Springfield, is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born Jan. 30, 1931, in Mattoon, a daughter of Roy and Gertrude Miller Holmes.

She married Robert E. Young in 1962; he died in 1998.

Surviving are one son, Jeffrey E. Young of Springfield; her mother, Gertrude Holmes of Mattoon; one sister, Lois Fortune of Center Line, Mich.; and one grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by her father.

Mrs. Young was a homemaker and a member of the West Side Christian Church, Springfield.

John Atwell

BOURBON - John Atwell, 89, of Bourbon, died at 10:50 a.m. Monday (Aug. 28, 2000) at the Arthur Home in Arthur.

Arrangements are incomplete at Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, Tuscola.
