Luther Wiltermood

Joseph Luther Wiltermood, age 62, of Arthur, formerly of Allenville, passed away at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.

Graveside funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, (today), at the Campground Cemetery with the Reverend James Dona officiating.

Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday (this) afternoon at the Schilling Funeral Home.

Luther was born at Berrien Springs, Michigan on June 3, 1938, a son of John Marion and Mildred Erickson Wiltermood.

He married Cora S. Miller on April 18, 1981.

Survivors include his wife, Cora S. Wiltermood of Arthur; three sons, Joseph F. Wiltermood and wife Holly of Neoga, Luther J. Wiltermood and wife Ginger and Lyle D. Wiltermood and wife Patty, all of Windsor; two daughters, Mary Ellen Wofford and husband Rick of Windsor and Cheryl L. McWilliams and husband Mike of Arthur; one stepdaughter, Debbie Wofford of Peoria; three sisters, Lois Ann Blalock and husband Frank of Largo, Florida, Josephine V. Phillippi and husband Junior of Lerna and Janet Louise Bryant and husband Frank of Mattoon; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Wiltermood retired after twenty years as an electrician with Randall's Electric. More recently he was owner and operator of Luther's Appliance Service in Arthur.

He passed away surrounded by his loving family.

Memorial gifts may be made to the family.

John Busher

NEOGA - John William Busher, 90, of Neoga, formerly of rural Sigel, died at 3:47 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Arrangements are incomplete at Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga.

Mrs. Mildred Ellis

NEOGA - Mrs. Mildred H. Ellis, 84, of Neoga, Illinois, died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2000) at Heartland Christian Village, in Neoga.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, with the Rev. Ron Lake officiating.

Burial will be in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery, Neoga, Illinois.

Visitation will be two hours before the service at the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, Ill.

She was born Nov. 23, 1915, in Cumberland County, Ill., the daughter of Fred and Blanche (Davis) Jones.

She married Arthur T. "Pete" Ellis on May 15, 1956 in Corinth, Mississippi; he died on June 14, 1973.

Survivors include a son, Robert Mesnard and wife Pat of Breeze, Ill.; step son, Jack Ellis and wife Donna of Greenwood, So. Carolina; three sisters, Mrs. Caroline Rinehart of Mattoon, Ill., Mrs. Bill (Jeannie) Bridges of Mattoon, Ill. and Mrs. Larry (Donna) Scaggs of Chrisman, Ill. special niece, Mrs. Shirley Starwalt of Neoga, Ill.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and nine step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Lois Price and one step daughter, Mrs. Emily Manuel.

Mrs. Ellis was a housewife and retired sales clerk from the Braden Wallpaper and Paint Store in Neoga, Ill.

She was a member of the Good Prospect Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Trilla, and a 38 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Neoga.

Memorials may be made to the Heartland Christian Village, Neoga.

Billie Garver

WEST UNION - Billie M. Garver, 76, of West Union, died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at 1:41 a.m. at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union with the Rev. Richard Chapman officiating.

Burial will be at the Ohio Cemetery, northwest of West Union.

Graveside military rites will be conducted by West Union American Legion Post 1130.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

He was born Sept. 13, 1924, in rural Martinsville, the son of Jessie and Linnie Cartwright Garver.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Stoker of Kansas City, Kan.; two stepsons, Max Thompson of rural Marshall and Allen Woodfall of Charleston; three stepdaughters, Dorothy Jean Riggs of rural Marshall, Vickie Hayden of Marshall and Connie Kimball of Martinsville; one brother, Delane Garver of Oliver; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three wives, Eula, Gladys and Irene Garver, and two brothers.

Mr. Garver retired after 20 years from TRW in Marshall as a supervisor.

He was an army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the West Union Christian Church and West Union American Legion Post 1130.

Lonnie Harris

TOLEDO - Lonnie Harris, 40, of Toledo, died at 8:55 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home.

No service will be conducted.

The Barkley Funeral Home, Toledo, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born April 25, 1960, in St. Louis, the son of Neil and Jean Harris.

He married Gen Sewell in 1993; she survives.

Also surviving are his mother, Jean Harris White of Cahokia; two sons, Brandon Harris of Cahokia and J. D. Jackson of Toledo; three daughters, Kerry Messina and Nicole and Valerie Sewell, all of Toledo; two brothers, Larry Harris of East Corondelet and Ed Harris of Collinsville; three sisters, Ginger Mueller of East Corondelet, Genanneal Forrest of Quincy and Carol Ratley of Cahokia; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Harris was an auto mechanic for Alexanders Service Station in Toledo. He was a member of the Toledo American Legion Pool League.

Violet McCandlish
Violet E. McCandlish, 94 years of age, passed away Wednesday, October, 18, 2000 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Barkley's Funeral Home in Toledo, followed by an Eastern Star service.

Funeral services will be on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at Cottonwood United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in the Toledo Cemetery.

Violet Elizabeth, daughter of Amos W. and Eva Starbuck Butler, was born April 4, 1906, in Texico, Illinois.

She and Fred R. McCandlish were married in Peoria, Illinois, November 19, 1927.

Their children survive: Dorothy E. Cutright, and husband George, of Toledo; Carolyn J. Auger, of Toledo; Bruce W., and wife Bonnie, of Toledo; and Donna M. Barnes, and husband Phillip, of Manchester, TN. Eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild also survive.

A sister, Bertha Eggers Bowers of Greenup survives.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1980.

Two sisters, two brothers and a grandson, Neil Cutright also preceded her in death.

Violet was a 1927 graduate of Decatur Macon County School of Nursing. She was a 4-H leader for 10 years and the first treasurer of the newly organized Home Bureau in 1949. She was a 70-year member of Cottonwood United Methodist Church, where she served as teacher, pianist, Methodist Youth Fellowship adviser, and Women's Society president.

For more than 50 years, she was a member of Order of Eastern Star, #231, and of the American Legion Auxiliary. Violet was a 25-year member of Ann Crooker St. Clair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was a charter member of the Coles-Cumberland Genealogical Society. She was editor of the first edition of Cemeteries of Cumberland County in 1973.

She also compiled a book of county marriage records.

Gifts in her memory may be made to Sumpter Township Library, Toledo Life Center, or the donor's choice.

Helen Stafford

ATHENS - Helen J. Stafford, 72, of Athens, formerly of Mattoon, died at 12:46 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2000) at Memorial Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Eastlawn Cemetery in Urbana.

Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Staab Funeral Home, Springfield.

She was born July 20, 1928, in Urbana, the daughter of Ardith and Pearl Cox Davis.

She married Ralph L. Stafford; he died in 1994.

Surviving are one son, C. Wayne Baker of Athens; one brother, Ronald DeWayne Davis of Foley, Ala.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, one brother and two sisters.

Mrs. Stafford was a homemaker and member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Medical Center for Cardiac Unit or Daily Bread, Springfield, IL 62702.

Cora Vincent

TOLEDO - Cora E. "Granny" Vincent, 89, of Toledo, died at 12:15 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Barkley Funeral Home, Toledo, with the Rev. Steve Massengill officiating.

Burial will be in Keenes Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Barkley Funeral Home in Toledo.

She was born March 2, 1911, in LaClede, the daughter of Grover C. and Flora M. Weaver Randall.

She married Howard C. Vincent in 1933; he died in 1971.

Also surviving are one son, Paul Vincent of Toledo; one brother, Edwin H. Randall of Marengo; three sisters, Cleo Schussler of Tucson, Ariz., Clella Temple of Charleston and Enid Robertson of Edgewood; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one sister.

Mrs. Vincent was a telephone operator and owner and operator of Vincent Gardens, Mattoon, for 35 years.

Mary Burtner

OAKLAND - Mary Louise Burtner, 76, of Oakland, died at 1 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 17, 2000) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon.

The funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Arcola, with Father Joseph Allen officiating.

Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Oakland.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Taber Funeral Home, Oakland.

She was born Feb. 23, 1924, in San Antonio, the daughter of Thomas and Susanna Buquor Placier.

She married Charles T. Burtner in 1945; he survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Chuck Burtner of Marshall and Tim Burtner of Loda; one daughter, Annette Duzan of Oakland; two brothers, Thomas Placier Jr. and LeRoy Placier, both of San Antonio; three sisters, Ella Aquliar of Camden, N.J., Bertha Andrade of San Antonio and Gloria Pagaza of Yorba Linda, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Mrs. Burtner was a lunch room/playground supervisor at Lake Crest School, Oakland, for 25 years. She was a Girl Scout Leader for 17 years, and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society for 40 years, the Heart Fund for 10 years and Hospice 15 years. She was a member of the LMI of Oakland, Oakland Senior Citizens, Oakland VFW Auxiliary, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Arcola and affiliated with the Oakland Christian Church Ladies Bible Study.

Memorials may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Arcola.

Ethel Draper

GREENUP - Ethel C. Draper, 96, of Greenup, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday (Oct. 16, 2000) at the Cumberland Nursing Center in Greenup.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Bishop Funeral Home, Greenup, with Dr. Tom Meachum officiating.

Burial will be in the Washington Street Cemetery, Casey.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

She was born June 4, 1904, in Annapolis, the daughter of Robert and Nora Sanders Elliott.

She married Howard Draper in 1921, he died in 1955.

Surviving are three daughters, Neda Cowger of Dunnedin, Fla., Helen Dooley of Bartonville and Marcella Stewart of Greenup, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Draper was a homemaker and a cook at the Cumberland School.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenup.
