Obituaries in Illinois Newspapers

William Budge Reid Jr.

Former Charleston resident and EIU graduate William Budge Reid, Jr., 67, who taught United States history at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL, for 29 years - 26 of them in the aftermath of a major stroke - died October 14 at his home in Naperville, IL, after a brief battle with cancer.

Mr. Reid was only 34 in 1967 when he suffered the stroke that left him paralyzed on his right side.

After a stint in the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, he returned to teaching full time in the fall of 1969.

In October of this year, Mr. Reid was presented with the Vita Plena Award from the Lyons Township High School Board for outstanding contributions to the school district. During his tenure at LTHS, Mr. Reid served as faculty sponsor of the History Club. He was also a past board member of the Illinois State Historical Society, and was a member of the Naperville Heritage Society.

Said Lyons Township Superintendent Dr. Dennis Kelly, "Many employees upon retirement walk away from their jobs and are quickly forgotten. Bill never forgot LT and his friends at LT never forgot him.

"A lifelong Democrat, Mr. Reid in later years at LT delighted his students by playing various Republican U.S. presidents (as well as another American with a disability, Franklin Delano Roosevelt) in reenactments of presidential debates with his colleague (and current LT assistant football coach) George Turnbull.

Said Turnbull, "Bill made history come alive for his students, and he did that through his joy of knowing history. He was a true historian, not someone who just taught by the textbook. Hundreds of students who graduated from LT are better citizens for having been taught by Bill.

"Following his retirement from teaching in 1993, Mr. Reid became a widely respected volunteer with the Naperville Evening Kiwanis Club, the Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry, Edward Hospital, and as a DuPage County election judge. He received the Kiwanis "Outstanding New Member" award in 1996. In honor of his superior example as a volunteer, the Naperville Evening Kiwanis Club has dedicated the next year's activities to Mr. Reid. Said current Kiwanis president Joseph Honn, "We were always so inspired by Bill's unflagging energy and commitment that I thought it appropriate that this next year be dedicated to him. I wish only half the people I knew worked as hard on behalf of others as he did.

"A music lover, Mr. Reid was a former member of the Q-Suburban Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. He edited the monthly bulletin for Q-Suburban for several years, and was named "Best Editor of the Year" in Illinois by SPEBSQSA in 1970.

Mr. Reid was born in Washington, D.C., in 1933 to William Budge Reid, a stonemason and Scottish immigrant, and Selina (Martin) Reid, a registered nurse.

His family moved to Charleston in 1948, where his father helped build the Booth Library and several other structures, and his mother worked at Charleston Hospital and later the Brown Shoe Company.

Mr. Reid attended Eastern State High School, where he lettered in track and football. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1955 with a B.S. in Social Studies, and after serving two years with the First Division in Cold War Germany (discharged with the rank of sergeant), Mr. Reid returned to Eastern to earn his M.S. in 1958.

He married fellow EIU graduate Ann Norris of Nokomis, IL (a special education administrator in the Naperville public schools) in 1959. The two enjoyed extensive travel abroad and in the U.S. after retirement.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Reid is survived by twin daughters Colleen (Christopher) Demetre of Arlington Heights, IL and Kathleen (John) Pizzo of Naperville, son Kevin (Lynda) of Roselle, IL, and daughter Kerry Reid of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren Jackson and Mary Reid of Roselle; sisters Christine Robertson of Naperville and Sheila Reid of Indianapolis, IN; sister-in-law Mary Fliakos of Arlington Heights and brothers-in-law Patrick and Joseph Norris of Pana and Warrensburg, IL; and ten nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 117 W. Van Buren, Naperville, from 2-9 p.m. on October 17.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. on October 18 at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 1215 Modaff Road, in Naperville.

Interment will be private.
