Louise Hougland

WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Louise Alice Hougland, 87, of Westerville, Ohio, formerly of Mattoon, died at 8:18 p.m. Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at the Wesley Glenn Health Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Arrangements are pending at the Schilling Funeral Home.

Malinda Otto

SULLIVAN - Malinda L. Otto, 84, of Sullivan, died at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at her residence.

The funeral will be 9 a.m. Friday at the Levi C. Otto residence.

Burial will be in the Yoder Cemetery, Arthur.

Visitation will be anytime prior to the service at the Levi Otto residence.

The McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Arthur, is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born Oct. 27, 1916, in Arthur, the daughter of Levi B. and Rebecca Schrock Miller.

She married Chris E. Otto in 1936; he died in 1985.

Surviving are two sons, Levi C. and William C. Otto, both of Sullivan; two daughters, Louise Bontrager of Kokomo, Ind., and Fannie Marie Miller of Arcola; three brothers, Milton L. Miller of Arcola, Ammon Miller of Arthur and Melvin L. Miller of Ava; one sister, Laura Bontrager of Kokomo, Ind.; 19 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, one brother, one sister and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Otto was a member of the Old Order Amish.

Leonard Perry

MATTOON - Leonard Perry, 61, of Mattoon, died at 10:48 a.m. Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Bethel Cemetery with Pastor Jacob L. Frederick officiating.

No visitation is planned.

The Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born Jan. 25, 1940, in Oakland, the son of Willis and Loma Lear Perry.

Surviving are one sister, Dorothy Miller of Mattoon, and one brother, Kenneth Perry of St. Louis.

Judith Waller

CASEY - Judith Ann Waller, 59, of Casey, died at 3:59 p.m. Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Markwell Funeral Home in Casey with the Rev. Tom Marsh officiating.

Burial will be in the Washington Street Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Markwell and Son Funeral Home in Casey.

She was born May 14, 1941, in Casey, the daughter of Glen Walden and Geneva June Shafer Boyd.

She married Vern Waller in 1958; he survives.

Also surviving are her mother, Geneva Boyd of Casey; two sons, Jimmie Waller of Louisville and Richard Waller of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; two daughters, Verna Reynolds of Casey and Lori Cown of Kansas; three sisters, Nora Williams, Juanita Remlinger and Glenda Letner, all of Casey; and 13 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Mrs. Waller was a biscuit maker at Hardee's and a story reader at Monroe Grade School.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Casey.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Casey.

Michael Welsh

Michael William Welsh, age 47, of Mattoon, passed away at 2:20 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at his home.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church with Father Herman J. Niebrugge celebrating.

Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery, following the Mass.

The Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Michael was born July 12, 1953, in Mattoon, the son of William T. and Gladys Foyil Welsh.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, Patrick Boyle.

Survivors include two sisters, Madonna Boyle and husband Jerry of Latham and Rhonda Davis and husband Rick of Humboldt; two nieces and two nephews.

Mr. Welsh was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelor's degree in Theatre and a Master's degree in Speech and Communication.

He was formerly employed as a journalist and lived many years in southern California.

He was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church

Michael Cox

NEW BADEN - Michael Eugene Cox, 39, of New Baden, formerly of Arcola and Oakland, died at 5:55 p.m. Monday (April 2, 2001) at his residence.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Shrader Funeral Home in Arcola, with Todd Leathermon officiating.

Burial will be in the Arcola Cemetery with military honors by Scott Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

He was born Jan. 3, 1962, in Smyrna, Tenn., the son of Millard Eugene "Gene" and Neoma Ann Pierson Cox.

He married Melissa Turner in 1985; she survives.

Also surviving are his mother of Charleston; grandmother, Louise Pierson of Charleston; three sons, Richard Weaver of Hindsboro, Keith Cox of Charleston and Coy Cox of New Baden; one daughter, Heather Cox of New Baden; two brothers, David Cox of Charleston and Brad Cox of Taylorville; and one sister, Kimberly Evans of Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Mr. Cox was a tech sergeant and served in the U.S. Air Force for almost 21 years.

He was an independent crop insurance adjuster for Wells Fargo and America Ag Adjusters.

He was a member of the American Legion in Mascoutah and the VFW of Belleville.

Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn., or National Childhood Cancer Foundation, Arcadia, Calif.

Richard D. (Fergie) Ferguson

CHARLESTON, IL - Richard Dale "Fergie" Ferguson, age 72, of rural Neoga, passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at his Lake Mattoon home.

Services celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, with the Reverend Pat Murphy officiating.

Following the service, the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey Post 1592 of Charleston will conduct Military Rites.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Services and visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston.

Interment will be held at a later date in Zion Hill Cemetery, southwest of Mattoon.

Dick, as he was also affectionately known, was born February 24, 1929 in Charleston, Illinois the son of Leo Earl and Luvena May (Pearcy) Ferguson.

He married Phyllis Ann Waggoner on January 19, 1954 in Coles County, Illinois. She passed away October 19, 2000.

He is survived by two daughters, Deb Pauls and her husband Hank of Charleston and Paula Ferguson of Mattoon; nine grandchildren, Alisha O'Boyle and her husband Ted, Morgan Brown and Tyler Dulumback, all of Charleston and Justin Brown, Amanda Barker, Brandon Barker, Samantha Coen, Octavia Uella Mae Swango and Octavian Trenton Dale Swango, all of Mattoon; two great-grandchildren, Evan Barker and Brenden Barker, both of Mattoon; four sisters, Nina Burnett of Johnston City, Illinois, Gracie Jones and her husband Robert of Charleston, Ruth Ann Hickox and her husband Warren of Casey, Illinois and Betty Duffle and her husband Horace of Hindsboro, Illinois, and two brothers, Willis Ferguson and his wife Jeanne and Ed Ferguson and his wife Delores, all of Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Phyllis.

Dick retired in the Lead Maintenance position at General Electric in Mattoon after thirty-six years of service.

He and his brother Ed were owners of Ferguson Pest Control in Charleston.

He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the United States Army with the 44th Engineers.

He carried memberships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (Mattoon Post) and Mattoon Eagles Club.

He also was a member of the Charleston Boat Club and had served as its President.

Fishing was his passion and he also enjoyed yard work, woodworking, riding motorcycles, polishing stones and creating jewelry.

A humble and "down to earth" person,

Dick will be remembered first as a family man, and one whose home was always open.

Dick's family requests that memorials in his honor be made to the family or Lincolnland Hospice.

Memorials may be made at the service or visitation, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.

Jerry Goad

DECATUR - Jerry W. Goad, 58, of Decatur, died at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home, in Sullivan.

Visitation will be from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.

Burial will be in Keller Cemetery, Lovington.

Memorials: Donor's choice.

Jerry was born on December 2, 1942, in Acersville, KY., the son of Robert E. and Nannie Mae Garmon Goad.

He was in the Air Force.

Jerry had been with Caterpillar for 31 years.

Member of the Heartland Community Church, Decatur.

He married Suzanne Lane on February 14, 1969, in Lovington.

Surviving him is his wife, Suzanne of Decatur; sons, Timothy W. Goad and wife Maria and their children Hannah, Noah; Chad E. Goad and wife Joann and their daughter, Caitlyn all of Sullivan; his parents, Robert and Nan Goad of Sullivan; brothers, Richard Goad of Morena Valley, CA, Charlie Goad of Decatur and Dan Goad of Mt. Zion; sisters, Jean Barrett, Mary Hudson, Barb Wilson all of Sullivan and Pam Devore of Charleston.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Linda.

Dr. W. Dale Lazier

MENLO PARK, Calif. - Warren Dale Lazier, born October 23, 1920, in Lee County, Steward, IL, a son of Paul Litch Lazier and Della Mae Fell.

Dale's family moved from Steward, IL to Mattoon, IL during the depression years.

He graduated from Mattoon High School.

Dale died at home in Menlo Park on March 28, 2001. He was 80 years old.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, June Brunel; his daughters: Francie Arcadi of Napa, Carol Stensrud of San Diego, and Beth Holtby of Colorado Springs; his sons-in-law: Thom Arcadi, Bill Stensrud and Bob Holtby six grandchildren: Antonio and Andrew Arcadi, Ross, Darren and Liz Stensrud, and Travis Holtby.

His brother, Murney Lazier resides in Western Falls, Illinois and his sister, Lois Shelley resides in Fort Worth, Texas.

Following college at Eastern Illinois University, Dale graduated from UCSF Dental School in 1946.

He made his home in Menlo Park where he practiced dentistry for 46 years.

He served in the Army Air Force in World War II.

During the Korean War Dale served as a Captain in the Army Dental Corps stationed at the Presidio, San Francisco.

Dale played golf on the golf and tennis teams in high school and on the varsity golf team in college.

An avid athlete, he continued to enjoy golf and tennis, and was a charter member of Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club.

A devoted Christian, Dale served as an active church member and Elder at Peninsula Bible Church in Palo Alto.

His favorite saying was, "Don't thank me, thank the Lord."

He was instrumental in starting men's Bible studies and was a living example of Jesus' love and concern for others.

The Menlo Park Kiwanis Club honored Dale for his years of service as a charter member at their 50 year anniversary celebration in March 2001.

Memberships in other organizations included: the American Dental Association, Palo Alto Elks Club, Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity, University of California Alumni Association.

A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Peninsula Bible Church, 3505 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, 650-494-3840.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dale Lazier may be made to Stanford Hospice, 300 Pasteur Drive, MC 5520, Stanford, California, 94305, (650) 723-3146 or the charity of choice.
