SULLIVAN - Tillie Emily Steele, 87, of Sullivan, died at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at her home.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan, conducted by Rev. Delmar Holbrook and Rev. Dave Starr.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial at Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan.
Memorials may be made to the Moultrie County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Steele was born August 21, 1913, in Hermann, MO, the daughter of Samuel C. and Tillie Mann Ulrich.
She was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church of God, Sullivan.
She married Leonard Max Steele July 8, 1944, in Sullivan and he survives, along with a daughter, Linda C. Blankenship of Clinton, NC, and grandchildren, Gretchen Blankenship-Gray of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Darin Leon Blankenship of Newton Grove, NC; three great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Vesta "Betty" Thompson
EFFINGHAM - Mrs. Vesta E. "Betty" Thompson, 93, of 14935 North 18th Ave., Effingham, Ill. died at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, April 15, 2001, at her residence.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home with the Rev. Russell Stark officiating.
Burial will be in Zion Hill Cemetery, Paradise Township, Coles County, Ill.
Visitation will be two hours before services at the funeral home.
She was born February 21, 1908, in Paradise Township, Coles County, Ill., the son of William L. and Ada V. (Brant) Campbell.
She married A. Lowell Field in 1937; he died February 10, 1962.
She married Alf R. Thompson on September 23, 1977 in North Carolina; he died January 27, 1997.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Mrs. Thompson was a housewife and former legal secretary for Douglas and Church Law Offices and Mark Hunt Law Office in Mattoon, Ill.
Betty and her husband Alf were strong supporters of the Millikin University of Decatur, Ill.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Effingham, Ill. and overseas, American Red Cross.

Hettie Turner
CHRISMAN - Hettie V. Turner, 88, of Chrisman, formerly of Oakland, died at 5:10 p.m. Friday (April 13, 2001) at Chrisman.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Taber Funeral Home in Oakland with Russell Witmer officiating.
Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She was born March 15, 1913, in Hindsboro, a daughter of Lisha and Myrtle Tuttle Emberton.
She married Mastan "Jack" Turner in 1932; he survives.
Other survivors include one son, Jackie Turner of Redmon; one brother, Clinton Emberton of Garrett; one sister, Lucille Ogletree of California; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, four brothers, eight sisters, and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Turner had worked in the janitorial department at Eastern Illinois University.

Michael Wells
SULLIVAN - Michael Shawn Wells, 25, of Sullivan died at 10 p.m. Saturday (April 14, 2001) from injuries received in a vehicle accident in rural Sullivan.
The funeral will be at Noon on Wednesday at the Brintlinger and Earl Cerro Gordo Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be conducted at the West Frantz Cemetery, in Oakley.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
He was born August 6, 1975, in Springfield.
Survivors include his mother, Catherine M. Hardesty of Decatur; grandparents, Clyde and Shirley Wells of Oakley; two daughters, Brook Wells of Weedville, Penn., Shania Dickant of Ridgway, Penn. and Christopher Freeman of Decatur; brothers, John Wells of Oakley and James Wells at home; and a sister, Shana Wells of Decatur.
Mr. Wells worked at Hydro-Gear in Sullivan.
NICHOLAS WHITE
DECATUR - Nicholas J. White, 39, of Decatur, passed away at 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2001, at his home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home in Mattoon with Pastor Jack Turner officiating.
Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, Mattoon.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Nicholas was born April 26, 1961 in Joliet, Illinois, son of Raymond N. and Janet Hamilton White.
He married Andra McDonald December 22, 1997 in the Bahamas; she survives.
Also surviving are his mother: Janet Brazzell of Mattoon, father Raymond White of Mattoon; stepsons: Toby Beard and wife Starla of Kincaid, IL and their daughter Hasha of Brazil, IN, Todd Beard and wife Stephanie, and their children Vincent Emerson and Ocean Thoreau of Mattoon.
One sister: Deanna Parke and her children: Brandon Parke, Brianna Clairess, and Ryan Cole of Zephyr Hills, FL.
Two brothers: Robin White and wife Kathy, and their children: Jessie White and Dakota White of Mattoon; and Chris White and his son Neko of Mattoon.
He was preceded in death by one brother: Charles Raymond White and grandparents: Jesse and Bessie Hamilton.
Nicholas was an employee of Intermet (Wagner Foundry) and had received his industrial maintenance degree from Lake Land College.
Archie Bunten
RANTOUL - Archie L. Bunten, 88, of Rantoul, formerly of Tolono and Arcola, died at 8:55 a.m. at his daughter's Rantoul home.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Van Voorhis Cemetery, rural Hindsboro, with the Rev. Donald Winch officiating.
The Edwards Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was born Jan. 12, 1913, in Putnam County, Ind., the son of William Alva and Gertrude Hayes Bunten.
He married Beulah Welch in 1933; she died in 1971.
He married Ruth Cekander in 1972; she died in 1998.
He married Idella Wilma Kincaid in 1998; she died in 2001.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur Bunten in Benson, Ariz., and Stephen Bunten of Springfield; two daughters, Charlotte Herrington of Urbana and Shirley Panepinto or Rantoul; two brothers, his twin Arthur Bunten of Mattoon and Charles Bunten of Oxford, Ohio; one sister, Laverne Tuttle of Arcola; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two infant daughters, one brother, one sister and two grandchildren.
Mr. Bunten was a farmer in the Arcola area for more than 30 years.
He worked for the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District until 1979, when he retired.
He was a member of the Tolono Methodist Church.

Donald Craig
MARTINSVILLE - Donald A. Craig, 79, of Martinsville, died at 10:05 a.m. Friday (April 13, 2001) in Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Ind.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Greenwell Funeral Home, Martinsville, with the Rev. Art Orndorff officiating.
Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery with military rites by the Martinsville American Legion Post 515.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
He was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Martinsville, the son of Rory Craig and Ruth Poe Craig.
He married Doris Dill in 1952; she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Terry Craig of Cedar Park, Texas, and Donald H. Craig of Martinsville; two daughters, Christine Washburn of Champaign and Debra Haun of Louisville; and one sister, Lillian Davidson of Martinsville.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Craig was a retired boilermaker with the Chicago Bridge and Iron Co.
He attended the Martinsville First Baptist Church and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Richard Lewis
WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Richard Doyle Lewis, 59, of Terre Haute, Ind., formerly of Marshall, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday (April 9, 2001) at Terre Haute Hospital.
The funeral was Friday at the Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home.
Burial was in Bethesda Memorial Park Cemetery, West Terre Haute, Ind.
He was born Sept. 12, 1941, in Marshall, the son of Frederick W. Lewis Sr. and Mabel Liggett Lewis.
He married Loretta Lewis; she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Rick Lewis of Brazil, Ind., and Randy Lewis of West Terre Haute, Ind.; four brothers; four sisters including Lucy Ayers of Charleston; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Lewis retired from Columbian Home Products Corp., formerly General Housewares, after 33 years of service.
Dorothy Chapman
ARCOLA - Dorothy Laverne Chapman, 70, of Arcola, died at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday (April 11, 2001) at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Edwards Funeral Home in Arcola with the Rev. Jack Woods officiating.
Burial will be in the Humboldt Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
She was born Nov. 21, 1930, in Humboldt, the daughter of Gilbert and Isabelle Payne LeGrand.
She married Charles Chapman in 1950; he survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Duane Chapman of Villa Grove, Darrell Chapman of Arthur and Dana Chapman of Humboldt; one daughter, Diane Stoltey of Monticello; one sister, Juanita Belles of Mattoon; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Chapman was a homemaker.
