Patricia Jackson

GREENUP - Patricia A. Jackson, 50, of Greenup, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday (April 11, 2001) at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Barkley Funeral Home in Greenup with the Rev. Jere McSparran officiating.

Burial will be in Aten Cemetery, Hidalgo.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She was born July 31, 1950, in Mattoon, the daughter of Virgil and Audrey Duvall Freeman.

She married Keith Jackson in 1986; he died in 2000.

Surviving are her mother, Audrey McMorris of Greenup; two daughters, Tammy Davidson and Laura Jackson, both of Greenup; two brothers, Don Freeman of Woodridge and Richard Freeman of Lexington, Tenn.; one sister, Madonna Baugh of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her father and one brother.

Mrs. Jackson was a nurses aid.

Judge W.B. "Dutch" Kranz

SULLIVAN - Judge W.B. "Dutch" Kranz, 83, of Sullivan, died at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday (April 11, 2001) in the Sullivan Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Reed Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Glen Stewart.

Burial will be in the Greenhill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or Donor's Choice.

Judge Kranz was born on April 13, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Philip R. and M. Pearl Brown Kranz.

"Dutch" was a 50 year member of the Illinois State Bar Association, a 53 year member of the American Legion, a 50 year member of the Methodist Church, a member of the Sullivan Lions Club, the George A. Sentel # 764 A.F. & A.M. and was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Bloomington Valley Scottish Rite, and was a former member of the Moweaqua Rotary Club and the Moweaqua School Board.

"Dutch" graduated from Danville High School in 1935 and was a 1940 graduate of the Caterpillar Co. Machinist Tool and Die Maker School.

He then graduated from the University of Illinois In Champaign and the John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 1950.

From 1950 until 1968 he practiced law in Moweaqua, from 1967 until 1973 he practiced law in Sullivan and from 1961 until 1967 he was the Closing Attorney for land purchases on the Lake Shelbyville Dam Project.

On April 2, 1973, "Dutch" was appointed an Associate Judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit.

On April 1, 1980, he was appointed Resident Circuit Judge for Moultrie County in the Sixth Judicial Circuit.

In November 1982 he was elected Resident Circuit Judge and retired from that position on October 2, 1987.

"Dutch" served in the Army Corps of Engineers attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.

On November 30, 1940, he married Mary L. Walker in East Peoria, IL and she survives.

Also surviving are daughters, Susie Alexander and her husband Bob of Decatur, IL, Sandra Bland of Bemidji, MN; grandchildren, J. Luke Bland of Decatur, IL, D. Wesley Bland of Menomonie, WI, Amanda B. Bland of Mankato, MN; a brother, Col. (Retired) "Jack" A. Kranz of Savanna, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant twin brothers.

Macayla Moomaw

RANTOUL - Macayla Ann Moomaw, infant daughter of John and Melinda Moomaw, was still born at 6:03 a.m. Wednesday (April 11, 2001) at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at the Arcola Cemetery with Father Joseph Allen officiating.

Edwards Funeral Home in Arcola is in charge of the arrangements.

Surviving are her parents of Rantoul; grandparents, Larry and Cheryl Switzer, and Sherron Moomaw, all of Arcola; and great-grandparents, Telva Williams of Arcola, Elsie Switzer of Newman, and Lyle and Betty Nichols of Mahomet.

Kathleen Pasley

BETHANY - Kathleen Lillian Pasley, 77, of Bethany, died at 2:00 p.m. April 11, 2001, in St. John's Hospital, Springfield.

Funeral services will be Saturday April 14, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. in McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Bethany.

Visitation will be Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany. Memorials: Donor's Choice.

Kathleen was born on April 28, 1923, in Shelby County, the daughter of Lyman C. and Wilma M. Woolen Manship.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Bethany, and attended the First United Methodist Church, Dalton City.

She married Joseph J. Pasley on December 27, 1940, in St. Charles, Mo., and he survives.

Also surviving are 2 sons, Jon H. Pasley of Findlay, Timothy J. Pasley of Phoenix, AZ; daughters, Sharon K. Ward of Bryan, TX, Marcia E. Anzelc of Decatur; sisters, Carlin Jo Booker of Newport, FL, Jennie Lee Mounce of Richey, FL; 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren.

Harold Stites

CHARLESTON - Harold Franklin Stites, age 83, of Mattoon and formerly of Charleston, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

Services celebrating his life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, with Chaplain Robert Holmes officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Services and visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston.

Following the service, interment with military rites conducted by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey Post 1592 of Charleston will be held in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston.

Harold was born June 3, 1917 in Coles County, Illinois the son of Arthur and Cleda (Boyd) Stites.

He married Norma Mae Tefft, who passed away in 1965.

He later married Elizabeth "Betty" McCarty, who survives.

He is also survived by one son, Frank Stites and his wife Jo Ann of Effingham, Illinois; two daughters, Linda Peterson of Poway, California and Patty Russell and her husband Wayne of Toledo, Illinois; two step daughters, Mary Lee Bartlow of Imperial Beach, California and Kay Walters and her husband Al of Mattoon; one sister, Lois Armstrong of Harrison, Arkansas; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; six step grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Harold served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey Post 1592 of Charleston and the Carpenters Union Local #347.

Area micro midget race drivers and fans will remember him as their race day flagman for many years at the Charleston track.

He loved boat racing, enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and refinishing furniture.

Harold's family requests that memorials in his honor be made to Elizabeth "Betty" Stites, 1305 Lafayette Apt. 1, Mattoon, IL 61938

Margaret VanBellehem

CHARLESTON, IL - Margaret Frances Kistler VanBellehem, age 94, of Charleston, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at Hilltop Convalescent Center of Charleston.

Services celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 with Father Joseph Ring presiding.

Visitation will be held prior to the services, from 9:00-10:30 a.m.

Services and visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston.

Following the service, interment will be held in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston.

Margaret was born December 16, 1906 in Cisco, Illinois the daughter of Edwin "Bud" and Molly Kistler.

She married James Bryce VanBellehem Sr. on August 20, 1927 in Cisco.

She is survived by two sons, James Bryce VanBellehem, Jr. and his special friend Betty Hicks of Ash Flats, Arkansas and Jerry T. VanBellehem and his wife Mary of Charleston; three grandchildren, James Casey VanBellehem and Kathleen Davis and her husband Terry, all of Charleston, Heidi Hustmyer and her husband John of Mattoon, Illinois; three step grandchildren, Rita Wright of Syracuse, New York, Monte Nugent and his wife Linda and Carla Hornbeck and her husband Dave, all of Charleston; and three great grandchildren, Erika Coffey and Brooke Hustmyer, both of Mattoon and Elena Davis of Charleston.

She was preceded by her parents, her husband Jim, three brothers and two sisters.

Margaret was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church of Charleston.

Prior to opening Van Bell Electric with her husband in downtown Charleston in 1946, she taught English and also served as Assistant Principal at Dalton City High School.

She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1927 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, and while at the U of I, she became a member of the Kappa Delta.

Shortly after the death of her husband in 1980, she retired from her business and sold it to her sons Jerry and Bryce, Jr.

Spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren was her favorite pastime.

She also enjoyed reading.

Margaret's family requests that memorials in her honor be made to the Hilltop Convalescent Center Residents Activity Fund.

Memorials may be made at the service or visitation, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.

Pete Armstrong

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Pete Armstrong, 80, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Mattoon, died Wednesday (April 11, 2001) at Charlotte Harbor Nursing Home.

Arrangements are incomplete at the Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, Ind.

He was born April 16, 2001, at DeKoven, Ky., the son of Gus Taylor Armstrong and Lillie Butts Armstrong.

He married Donna Hatfield in 1944; she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Darry Armstrong of Apple Valley, Minn.; one daughter, Sherye Young of Hammond, Ind.; one sister, Norma Copeland of Boonville, Ind.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Armstrong retired as a sales representative for Bowman Distribution of Cleveland and he was co-owner with his wife of Wanda's Ladies Wear in Princeton, Ind.

He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Mattoon, the Lions Club of Mattoon and the Jubilaires Gospel Quartet, who were regulars on WLBH Radio Station in Mattoon.

G. Byron Austin

CHARLESTON - G. Byron Austin, 87, of Charleston, died at 3:45 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2001 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001 at the Caudill-King Funeral Home with Reverend David Birch officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. today at Caudill-King Funeral Home.

Byron was born April 25, 1913, in Charleston, son of George and Leila Birch Austin.

He married Maxine Gibbs in 1935, she survives.

Also surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Don (Sandra) Stelzer and Judith Brooks, both of Springfield; four grandchildren: Sue Powell, Jeffrey Brooks, Kristine Smith, all of Springfield, and Kathryn Brooks of Clayton, Missouri.

Seven great-grandchildren: Coulton, Austin and Keely Brooks of Clayton, MO; Travis and Joshua Powell of Springfield; and Megan and R. J Smith of Springfield.

Byron retired as Supervisor of Mail at the Charleston Post Office in 1971.

He served two years in the Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II.

Byron was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church, "Young At Heart" Club, V.F.W., Genealogy Society, and the "Austins' America."

His hobbies included traveling, genealogy, refinishing and caning old chairs, as well as fly fishing.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Charleston.

Helen M. Cooper

CHARLESTON - Helen Martha Cooper, age 83, of rural Charleston, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at her home.

Services celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 13, with the Reverend Dr. E. E. Elliott officiating.

Visitation will be held prior to the services, from 9:00-10:30 a.m.

Services and visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston.

Following the services, interment will be held in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston.

Helen was born September 12, 1917 in Coles County, Illinois the daughter of Frank and Alice (Walker) Shrader.

She married William Carl Cooper on February 26, 1949 in Cornith, Mississippi.

She is survived by her husband Carl of Charleston; four sons, Gary Johns, Larry Cooper and his wife Cheri, Rex Cooper and his wife Becky and Mark Cooper and his wife Connie, all of Charleston; one daughter, Carla Robison and her husband Doug of Lerna; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great great grandchild, and one brother, Clarence Shrader and his wife Kathryn of Charleston.

She was preceded by her parents; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Johns; two great grandchildren, Peyton Hite and April Johns; two sisters, Katherine Noble and Zella Shrader and one brother, Paul Shrader.

Helen was a member of the Providence Church.

Prior to her retirement from the Co-op Restaurant in Charleston, she served as Administrator for the Hillcrest and Hilltop Nursing Homes.

She enjoyed animals, playing the piano, singing, vegetable gardening and most importantly mothering.

Helen was not only a special mother and grandmother to her family, but mothered virtually everyone she met.

She held a genuine love for her family and friends, and a very special place in her heart for her grandchildren.

Helen's family requests that memorials in her honor be made to the American Kidney Foundation.

Memorials may be made at the service or visitation, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
