Judy Denton

MATTOON - Judy Denton, age 64, of Mattoon, passed away at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at her residence.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2001 at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home.

Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001 at the funeral home.

Judy Denton was born October 20, 1936 at West Frankfort, Illinois a daughter of Arthur and Iva Thomas Covert.

She married Paul A. Denton November 1, 1952, he survives.

Also surviving are her children, John Denton of Knoxville, Tennessee, Marilyn Denton, Arlene Ellison, Pauline Brown and Susie Patrick all of Mattoon; two sisters, Mary Sue Hood of Ferguson, Missouri and Elsie Mitchell of Villa Grove, Illinois.

Her grandchildren, Chuck Ellison, Joy Waldrop, Bradley Brown and Emily Brown as well great-grandchildren Jake Waldrop, Ty Ellison and Kaitlyn Ellison also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Denton was a member of the Church of God.

Phyllis Kingery

Phyllis Ann Kingery, age 52, of rural Gays, passed away at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Funeral services celebrating her life will begin at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Richard Coen officiating.

Burial will be in the Smyser Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 p.m. this evening (Thursday) at the funeral home.

Phyllis was born April 13, 1948, in Mattoon, the daughter of Russell L. and Mary Jones Hopper.

She married Terry L. Kingery on July 31, 1966.

He survives.

Other survivors include, two sons, Michael D. Kingery and fiance Joanna Russell, both of Urbana, Kenneth R. Kingery and fiance Kristen L. Rachow, both of Gays; mother, Mary Hopper Edwards of Mattoon; one brother, Russell "Corky" Hopper of Gays; and one grandson, Darren M. Kingery of Windsor.

Mrs. Kingery formerly was employed at the Mattoon Senior Center and was currently employed at the D & W Restaurant.

She attended the Smyser Christian Church.

In keeping with her love and concern for others Phyllis was an organ donor.

Memorials may be made to the Seven County Kidney Fund c/o Schilling Funeral Home.

Freda Pryor

SULLIVAN - Freda M. Pryor, 83, of Sullivan, died on Tuesday April 10, 2001, at 3:55 a.m. in the Menard Convalescent Center in Petersburg.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan, with the Dr. David Leslie officiating.

Visitation will be 1 hour before service time.

Burial will be in the Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan.

Memorials: Sullivan Senior Center.

Freda was born on August 26, 1917 in Moultrie County the daughter of Art and Lizzie Nichols Alumbaugh.

She retired as a school teacher and from the Sears Store in Decatur.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Sullivan.

She married Leo S. Pryor and he preceded her in death in 1985.

Surviving her are a brother, Willis Alumbaugh of Lovington; and a sister, Pauline Batman of Blue Mound.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Vice and Rosemary Light.

Bertha Hayes

CHARLESTON - Bertha Chrysler Hayes, 90, of Charleston, died at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday (April 10, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Boaz officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service on Thursday at the funeral home.

She was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Casey, the daughter of William and Flora Chrysler Matheney.

She married Allen Hayes; he died in 1978.

Surviving are seven sons, Richard Hayes of Fairfield, Russell Hayes of Rardin, Ronald Hayes of Charleston, Rex Hayes of Greenup, Henry Hayes of Charleston, Larry Hayes of Mattoon and Jerry Hayes of Charleston; two daughters, Barbara Fasig of Greenup and Sharon Hayes of Charleston; one sister, Blanche Taylor of Casey; 37 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, three brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Hayes was a homemaker.

Colva Mayberry

DECATUR - Colva Ira Mayberry, 89, of Harrison, Ark., formerly of Decatur, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday (April 8, 2001) in his home in Harrison, Ark.

The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Bethany.

Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany.

Visitation will be one hour before the service Friday at the funeral home.

He was born May 13, 1911, in Moultrie County, the son of Ira Roger and Belle Ringo Mayberry.

He married Roberta Misenheimer in 1931; she survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Richard and James Mayberry of Decatur and George Mayberry of Bethany; four daughters, Mary Jane Greenwood of Harrison, Ark., Doris Cox of Springfield, Mo., Betty Jo Mayberry of Harrison, Ark., and Kathie Makings of Kent, Wash.; two sisters, Wanda Brubeck and Gynith Patterson, both of Sullivan; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Mayberry was retired from Mueller Company in Decatur.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Harrison, Ark.

G. Byron Austin

CHARLESTON - G. Byron Austin, 87, of Charleston, died at 3:45 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2001 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001 at the Caudill-King Funeral Home with Reverend David Birch officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston.

Visitation will be from 5:00 t0 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at Caudill-King Funeral Home.

Byron was born April 25, 1913, in Charleston, son of George and Leila Birch Austin.

He married Maxine Gibbs in 1935, she survives.

Also surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Don (Sandra) Stelzer and Judith Brooks, both of Springfield; four grandchildren: Sue Powell, Jeffrey Brooks, Kristine Smith, all of Springfield, and Kathryn Brooks of Clayton, Missouri.

Seven great-grandchildren: Coulton, Austin and Keely Brooks of Clayton, MO; Travis and Joshua Powell of Springfield; and Megan and R. J Smith of Springfield.

Byron retired as Supervisor of Mail at the Charleston Post Office in 1971.

He served two years in the Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II.

Byron was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church, "Young At Heart" Club, V.F.W., Genealogy Society, and the "Austins' America."

His hobbies included traveling, genealogy, refinishing and caning old chairs, as well as fly fishing.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Charleston.

Dorothy Carruthers

NEOGA - Dorothy A. Carruthers, 84, of Clearwater Beach, FL, formerly of Neoga, died at 2:12 p.m. Monday, March 26, 2001, in her home.

She was born January 19, 1917, in Chicago, IL to Dr. Charlesand Clerza Clark.

Dorothy graduated from the University of Illinois.

She was married to Lt. Col. William J. Bowen, who died in 1944.

She was married to John H. Carruthers, who died in 1981, from 1950 to 1977.

She worked at Carruthers Dept. Store in Neoga and J. Byrons Dept. Store in Clearwater.

She is preceded in death by son; James Bowen and daughter: Jo Allyn Carruthers.

Surviving Dorothy are children: Connie G. Van Cleave, Urbana, OH; Barbara A. Bowen, Clearwater Beach, FL; Judith Brownback and husband David, Neoga, IL; John R. Carruthers and wife Michele, Neoga, IL; sister, Elizabeth Mendoza, Jacksonville, FL; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

The National Cremation Society is in charge of the arrangements and burial will be in Bay Pines National Cemetery.

Donations may be made to Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 300 E. Bay Dr., Largo, FL. 33770.

ETTA L. ENGLISH

CHARLESTON - Etta L. English, 81, of Charleston, passed away at 6:29 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2001 at Prairie View Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Boaz officiating.

Interment will be in Mound Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Harper-Swickard.

Etta was born February 22, 1920 at Shelbyville, Illinois; daughter of Oren and May Gilbert Pearcy.

She married Richard "Dick" English; he died in 1972.

Surviving are two stepchildren: Richard English, Jr. and Sue Wooten both of Ohio.

One sister: Ila Doty of Charleston, several nieces and nephews, including Edna Bettinger of Charleston, also survive.

Etta retired in 1984 from the Eastern Illinois University Housekeeping Department and was a member of the Charleston Moose Lodge.

Barbara Ann Lang

CHARLESTON - Barbara Ann Lang, 67, of Charleston, passed away at 8:41 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

A graveside funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at Roselawn Cemetery with Reverend Dale Beck officiating.

There will be no visitation.

The Caudill-King Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara was born May 31, 1933, in Charleston, the daughter of Orval and Catherine Anderson Ward.

She married Edman Lang March 4, 1952 in Charleston; he survives.

Also surviving are three sons: Edman L. Lang, Jr. and wife Carol of Charleston, Steven Dale Lang and wife Gina of Mattoon, and Jeffery James Lang and wife Teresa of Charleston; and one daughter: Lisa Craig and husband Andy of Belleville.

One brother: Bill Ward of Charleston and eight grandchildren also survive.

Barbara was a member of Charleston V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary and the Ladies of the Moose.
