Ivan Dallas

MATTOON - Ivan Dallas, age 94, of Mattoon, passed away at 3:50 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001 at his residence with his daughters by his side.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2001 at the First Baptist Church, 2800 University Drive, Charleston, with the Reverend Pat Murphy officiating. Interment will be in Huckaba Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2001 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home.

Ivan Dallas was born September 10, 1906 in Lafayette Township, Coles County, Illinois, a son of Samuel and Christianna Goodman Dallas. He married Dorothy Allnutt March 8, 1941 in Kentucky, she preceded in death October 22, 1980. He is survived by two daughters, Julia Dallas and Jeanne Dallas Ahasay of Mattoon, a sister, Myra Fryman of Mattoon and grandchildren, Gary Ahasay, Jr. and wife Nicole and Lori Ahasay all of Mattoon. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Mr. Dallas was a member of First Baptist Church, Charleston for over fifty years. He was a retired farmer and member of the Coles County Farm Bureau for over fifty years and was a member of the Okaw Valley Motorcycle Club. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Cynda Gilbert

ARLINGTON, Texas - Cynda Gilbert, 60, of Arlington, Texas, formerly of Mattoon, died Sunday (April 22, 2001) at her residence.

The funeral was conducted at the Holder Funeral Home in Owensville, Ind. Burial was in Stewartsville, Ind.

She was born July 25, 1940, in Evansville, Ind., the daughter of Arlin W. and Rosalie Cox.

Surviving are her mother; three sons, Michael Gilbert of Arlington, Texas, David Gilbert of Wasilla, Alaska, and Pat Gilbert of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Carol Wildt of Princeton, Ind.; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, one brother and one grandchild.

Mrs. Gilbert had taught Special Education at Armstrong Center, was a substitute teacher and had worked at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center while in Mattoon. She also taught at Kooken and Blanton Elementary Schools in Texas.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Connie Starwalt

GREENUP, IL - Connie Sue Starwalt, 50, of Greenup, IL, died at 2:43 a.m. Friday (April 27, 2001) at her residence.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday (April 30, 2001) at the Barkley Funeral Home in Greenup, IL, with the Rev. Rodney Houser and the Rev. Brooke Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Greenup Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday (April 29, 2001) at the funeral home.

She was born June 9, 1950, in Hidalgo, IL, a daughter of Bernie and Marjorie Bell Houser.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Brown of Casey, IL; one daughter, Tami Brown of Greenup; four grandchildren, Kayla, Cody and Derick Brown and Dylan Simms; four brothers, Charles, Victor and Bernie Houser, all of Greenup, IL, and Terry Houser of Toledo, IL; seven sisters, Shirley Stanley of Olney, IL, Wanda Hawes, Ethel Warner and Rose Eggers, all of Greenup, IL, Dixie Seiler of Toledo and Marjorie Trostle and Carolyn Byrnes, both of Jewett, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one brother and one sister.

Mrs. Starwalt worked for Fedders Corporation in Effingham, IL.

MARY WATKINS

Mary Louise Watkins, age 75, of Mattoon, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001, at her residence, where she was cared for by her one son and six daughters.

Funeral services celebrating her life will begin at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Schilling Funeral Home with Bishop T. Ned Lunt officiating. Burial will be in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Monday at the funeral home.

Mary was born July 2, 1925 Fornfelt, Missouri, a daughter of Charles David and Nancy Elizabeth Brant Montgomery. She married Crowell Webb Watkins March 2, 1945. He preceded her in death on October 4, 1985. She was also preceded in death by one son, Crowell Webb Jr., one granddaughter, Jordan Ann Bolles, two brothers, two sisters and life long friend, Don H. Foote.

Survivors include one son, Stephen Watkins of Mattoon; six daughters, Nancy Gerdes and husband Darrell, Karen L. Hall, Kathleen Kirkham, Rebecca Cohoon and husband John, all of Mattoon, Charlotte Ann Bolles of Jacksonville, Florida, Jan Marie Crews of Palm Harbor, Florida; one step-daughter, Gail Glass and husband David of Ruskin, Florida; one sister, Lillie "Penny" Sanderson of St. Ann, Missouri, one special niece, Clarice "Smiley" Reeves of Hannabal, Missouri; eighteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Watkins was a homemaker. She also had worked at the Mattoon Garment Factory.

Mary's favorite hobby was doll collecting.

Memorial gifts may be made to Rebecca Cohoon at 404 DeWitt Avenue, Mattoon.

Bill Janney

MARTINSVILLE - Bill K. Janney, 71, of Martinsville, died at 6:45 a.m. Thursday (April 26, 2001) at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Greenwell Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev. David Wilson officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Martinsville.

He was born Nov. 16, 1929, in Clark County, the son of Dean K. Janney and Esther Orr Janney. He married Marlene Sullens in 1953; she survives.

Also surviving are his mother of Martinsville; two sons, Douglas Janney of Wilmington and Gary Janney of Manhattan; two daughters, Kemm Blogg and Terri Rathert, both of Peotone; one brother, Ron Janney of Martinsville; one sister, Melissa Miller of Clay City, Ind.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Mr. Janney retired as a maintenance foreman of Desoto Inc. of Joliet and was an Air Force veteran. He was a member of the Martinsville Bible Church, Martinsville American Legion Post 515 and the Casey VFW.

Memorials may be made to the Martinsville Bible Church Building Fund.

Eleanor Matlock

TOWER HILL - Eleanor M. Matlock, 82, of Tower Hill, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at her daughter's residence.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, with the Rev. Cynthia Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery near Assumption. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

She was born March 9, 1919, in Stonington, the daughter of Leslie and Ida Shelton Tirey. She married Earl "Bill" Matlock in 1938; he died in 1987.

Surviving are one daughter, Janet Matlock of Shelbyville, and one sister, Reva Mae Reulecke of Moweaqua.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Matlock worked for the State of Illinois in the Public Aid and Drivers License Departments; CIPS in Pana, Shelbyville and Taylorville; and most recently as secretary at the First Baptist Church of Pana. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shelbyville and the Eastern Star of Tower Hill, and attended the Tower Hill United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Shelby County Community Services.

James Starwalt

James G. "Jim" Starwalt, age 72, of Mattoon, passed away at 4:05 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend James Dona officiating.

Burial will be in the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from noon until service time Saturday afternoon at the funeral home.

James was born August 21, 1928, in Coles County, a son of Lloyd T. and Edith Black Starwalt. He married Jean Young in 1949. She passed away in 1995. He married Nancy Van Note Bridges on September 24, 1997. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Terry D. Starwalt and wife Judy of Mattoon and Greg Starwalt and wife Melissa of Charleston; two stepchildren, Michael V. Bridges of Mattoon and Marcia L. Orndorff and husband Tony of Mattoon; five grandchildren, Theresa Starwalt, Michael Starwalt and Christopher Starwalt, all of Mattoon and Zachary Starwalt and Caymen Starwalt, both of Charleston; four step-grandchildren, Quincy Watkins of Greenup, Connie Coatney of Toledo, Jessica Waller and Tony Orndorff, both of Mattoon; and one step-great-granddaughter, Shelby Coatney of Toledo.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Mr. Starwalt retired as a mechanic from Yellow Freight in Effingham and Chicago in 1989. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Eagles Club, V.F.W. Post 4325 and the Loyal Order of the Moose.

Memorial gifts may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Watkins

MATTOON - Mary L. Watkins, 75, of Mattoon, died at 11:50 a.m. Thursday (April 26, 2001) at her residence.

Arrangements are incomplete at the Schilling Funeral Home.

MADONNA DECKER

An angel left this earth to join God's legion in heaven!

Madonna Ruth Decker, age 69, of Mattoon, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at her residence.

The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday morning at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church with Father Herman J. Niebrugge celebrating. Burial will be in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. this evening (Thursday) at the Schilling Funeral Home with a Biblical Wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Madonna was born August 2, 1931, in Arcola, a daughter of Henry A. and Bereneice Brown Vogel. She married Fred Decker on April 30, 1954.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Decker of Mattoon; four brothers, Leon L. Vogel and wife Norma of Murrieta, California, Robert Vogel and wife Mary of Mattoon, Francis Vogel and wife Connie of Glenview, James Vogel and wife Peg of Decatur; and one sister, Helen Egan of Lindenhurst, Long Island, New York.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Decker attended the Arcola school system and later became a Business major at Eastern Illinois University. She worked for the Everett Brown and W. M. Briggs Insurance and Real Estate Agency. She was a working partner in Decker Enterprises, which included Fire Extinguisher Sales and Service and Fred's Gun Shop, as well as other business enterprises. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella and was a former member of the Charleston Country Club.

Madonna loved people and was always looking for ways to serve them in any capacity, with both her time and monetary resources.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Mattoon Food Pantry.

JAMES E. GOLLADAY

CHARLESTON - James Edward "Jim" Golladay, age 77, of Charleston, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at his Charleston home. Services celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28 at the First Baptist Church, 2800 University Drive, Charleston. Reverend Pat Murphy will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston.

Following the service, interment, with a military flag folding ceremony conducted by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey Post 1592 of Charleston, will be held in Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston.

Jim was born November 19, 1923, in Charleston, Illinois the son of Joe and Hannah (Chesley) Golladay. He married Doris Edwards on October 5, 1950 in the First Baptist Church in Charleston.

He is survived by his loving wife Doris of Charleston; two daughters, Gail Brown and her husband Bob and Donna Hargis and her husband Vic, all of Charleston; six grandchildren, Rebecca Veach, Phillip Brown, Rachel Brown, Stacie Hargis, Jay Hargis and Kyle Hargis, all of Charleston; one great grandchild, Kyndal Ridgeway of Charleston and one sister, Edith Smith and her husband Paul of Oakland, Illinois. He was preceded by his parents, and three sisters, Leona Golladay, Helen Harmon and Mary Ellen Golladay.

Jim's Church family and his family were his life. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston, where he ushered for almost fifty years and was deeply involved in many of the church projects. His love and devotion for Doris, his daughters and their husbands and his grandchildren and great grandchildren was plentiful and unconditional. He enjoyed camping, word puzzles and playing games with his grandchildren. Jim will be remembered as a quiet man whose silence spoke volumes when it came to his love for others and his willingness to lend a helping hand. He was a World War II Veteran having served with the United States Army. He retired from Furste Auto Supply in 1986.

Jim's family requests that memorials in his honor be made to the First Baptist Church of Charleston. Memorials may be made at the service or visitation, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
