BLOOMINGTON - Clarke Edward Bridges, 35, of Bloomington, formerly
of Mattoon, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday (May 23, 2001) in Bloomington.
A graveside service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Greenhill
Cemetery, Sullivan, with Pastor Ron Thacker officiating. Visitation will be
6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in Kibler-Smith Funeral Home, Bloomington.
Arrangements are by Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan.
He was born March 25, 1966, in Mattoon, the son of Wallace Edward and
Wanda M. Callow Bridges.
Surviving are his mother of Bloomington; companion, Jeana Leach of
Bloomington; three sons, Douglas Edward Bridges, Zachary Marshall
Bridges and Brandon Austin Robert Bridges, all at home; two brothers,
Ronald L. Callow of Decatur and Paul E. Bridges of Bloomington; and one
sister, Deena Miller of Mackinaw.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
Mr. Bridges was a laborer for Farmers Dry Wall Company, Bloomington.

Edward R. Fillman, Jr.
NEOGA, IL - Edward R. Fillman, Jr., age 45, of Neoga, IL, passed away
at Barnes-Jewish Hospital on Friday, May 25, 2001.
Mr. Fillman was born March 25, 1956, in Staten Island, New York. He
was the son of Edward R. and Viola M. (Rude) Fillman, Sr. He married
Debra Dare on July 16, 1999, she survives.
Also surviving are his mother, Viola Fillman of Mattoon; his brother, Fred
R. Fillman of Mattoon; and his sister, Mary F. Guertin and her husband
Dennis, of Bourbonnais.
Mr. Fillman was a guard employed by Burns Security. He grew up in the
First United Methodist Church. Edward served in the United States Army,
attended Mattoon Schools, and Lake Land College. He was a fine
craftsman and great gardner. He loved repairing things as a hobby and was
an avid animal lover.
Graveside services will be held for Mr. Fillman at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday,
May 29, 2001, at the Dodge Grove Cemetery with Rev. Ron Dickenson
and Rev. Eugene Black officiating. There will be no visitation.
Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
CHARLES MILES JR.
Charles "Smiley" Miles Jr., age 80, of Mattoon, passed away at 11:10 p.m.
Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the Douglas Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the
Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. John P. Besore III
officiating. The V.F.W. Post 4325 will perform a flag folding ceremony.
Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from noon until service time
on Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.
Smiley was born April 4, 1921, in Henderson, Kentucky, a son of Charles
R. and Irma Griffin Miles Sr. He married Donna L. Morris on February 1,
1947 at Pratt, Kansas.
Survivors include his wife, Donna L. Miles of Mattoon; two daughters,
Joyce Lindsay and husband Richard and Jackie Miles, all of Mattoon; two
sons, Jerry Wood of Louisville, Kentucky and Donald Wood of Albion; one
brother, Doris Miles of Henderson, Kentucky; seven grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jimmy Miles; and
one sister, Betty Ross.
Mr. Miles was a retired millwright from the Carpenter's Union Local #347
and previously owned and operated an auto repair service in Mattoon. He
was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Smiley enjoyed his
memberships in the Eagles Club and the V.F.W. Post 4325, both in
Mattoon.

Mariel Sanders
DECATUR - Mariel Starr Mia Sanders, 3 months, of Decatur, died at 10
a.m. Thursday (May 24, 2001) at Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.
The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the McMullin-Young Funeral
Home, Lovington. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the funeral
home. Burial will be in Keller Cemetery, Lovington.
She was born Feb. 21, 2001, in Champaign, the daughter of Timothy John
and Elizabeth Adele Rowe Sanders.
Surviving are her parents of Decatur; two brothers, Hunter and Sage
Sanders, both at home; grandparents, Mike and Amy Edwards of Tuscola,
Larry and Debbie Clayton of Decatur, and John and Ann Sanders of
Denver; great-grandparents, Lori Knight of Fredricktown, Mo., Mike and
Thersa Edwards of Mattoon, Joanne Rowe of Latham, Jack Sanders of
California, Mimi Clayton of Galesburg, Roland and Cathern Kerchner of
Fredricksburg, Penn., and Joan Allen of Las Vegas.
She was preceded in death by one grandfather.

William Gasaway
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - William "Bill" Henry Turner Gasaway, 89, of
Terre Haute, Ind., formerly of Casey, died at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday (May
23, 2001) at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Markwell and Son Funeral Home
in Casey with Mark Kaley officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah
Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the
funeral home.
He was born June 27, 1911, in Vermillion, the son of William Edgar and
Mayme Turner Gasaway. He married Cora E. Miser in 1939; she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Earl Gasaway of Terre Haute, Ind.; one
daughter, Karen Chesterson of Terre Haute, Ind.; one sister, Jane Gasaway
of Long Beach, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Mr. Gasaway was a retired farmer in the Casey area. He was a member of
the Casey United Methodist Church, the Casey Lions Club and Casey
Masonic Lodge.

Lloyd Gurley
HUTSONVILLE - Lloyd Edgar Gurley, 79, of Hutsonville, died at 6:22
a.m. Thursday (May 24, 2001) at Crawford Memorial Hospital in
Robinson.
The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Home in
West Union with the Rev. Patty King and Rev. Lynette Barnett officiating.
Burial will be in Hutsonville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m.
Friday and from 7 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
He was born Oct. 16, 1921, in rural Hutsonville, the son of Emery and
Janie Tuttle Gurley. He married Jean Myers in 1948; she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Brad Gurley of rural Hutsonville and Steve
Gurley of Plano, Texas; one sister, Leola Guyer of rural West York; and
four grandchildren.
Mr. Gurley was a farmer and member of the Pleasant Grove Friends
Church. He was a past leader of the Eureka 4-H Club and member of the
Crawford County Farm Bureau.

Rita L. Hoback
MATTOON - Rita L. Hoback, age 88, of Mattoon, passed away at 11:40
a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Shelbyville Manor.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2001 at the
Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Reverend Michael Henderson
officiating. Interment will be in Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be
from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Rita L. Hoback was born June 4, 1912, in Mattoon, Illinois, a daughter of
Randall and Bess Dooley Stevens. She was reared by an aunt and uncle,
Charles and Cordellia Webb. Rita married James R. Hoback June 5, 1932
at Mattoon, Illinois, he preceded her in death May 16, 1987. She is
survived by her children, Frances Moberly of Neoga, Betty Lou Shorter
and her husband Bill of Missouri and James Hoback, Jr. and his wife Joyce
of Decatur. Also surviving are her sister, Catherine Holmes of Pekin and
her grandchildren, Jan Austin, Becki Anderson, Don Moberley, Marla
Leasher, Julie Young, James Hoback III, and Debbie Wilhelm, sixteen
great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by one granddaughter, Durita Mae Barr, a son-in-law, Ralph B.
Moberley and a half sister.
Mrs. Hoback was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Order of
the Eastern Star and Royal Neighbors of America. She and her husband
owned and operated Hoback's Market for twenty three years and Rita later
worked for Yardman in Sullivan. Memorial contributions may be made to
the Alzheimer Foundation.
Edward Schultz
TUSCOLA - Edward Albert Schultz, 91, of Tuscola, died at 5:45 a.m.
Thursday (May 24, 2001) at the Arthur Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Forty Martyrs
Catholic Church in Tuscola with the Rev. Allen Kemme officiating. Burial
will be in Tuscola Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the
Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home in Tuscola.
He was born Nov. 21, 1909, in Pesotum, the son of Edward J. and Pearl
Fletcher Schultz. He married Maurine M. Teeters in 1933; she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Edward Schultz of Springfield; three daughters,
Susan Jacob of Arcola, and Sondra Billman and Sharon Hunt, both of
Tuscola; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by one infant son, two brothers, one sister and
two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Schultz was in the plumbing and heating business for many years. He
owned Tuscola Hardware and was a former maintenance man at the
Tuscola Post Office having retired in 1972. He was a World War II Navy
veteran, member of the Forty Martyrs Catholic Church, the American
Legion, Knights of Columbus, Tuscola Moose Lodge and the Douglas
County Museum Association.

JoAnne Mooneyham
NEOGA - JoAnne Mooneyham, 61, of rural Neoga, died at 1:19 p.m.
Tuesday (May 22, 2001) at her residence.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Independent Bible Believer
Church in Greenup with Tom Meachum officiating. Burial will be in the
Neoga Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the
church. The Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
She was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Jackson County, the daughter of Roscoe
and Gladys Pedicord Ratliff. She married Hollis W. Mooneyham in 1977;
he died in 1994.
Surviving are her mother, Gladys Ratliff of Brownstown, Ind.; one son,
Chuck E. Hagg of Manchester, Tenn.; three daughters, Elizabeth McCoy
of Orleans, Ind., Jacque Korb of Meriden, Conn., and Barbie Stewart of
rural Neoga; one brother, Roy Ratliff of Brownstown, Ind.; 19
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her father.
Mrs. Mooneyham was a housewife and DCFS homemaker.
Ruth Cornell
SPENCER GROVE, Ind. - Ruth Ann Cornell, 65, of Spencer, Ind., died
Friday (June 8, 2001) at St. Francis Specialty Hospital in Beech Grove,
Ind.
The funeral will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at the West & Parish & Pedigo Funeral
Home in Spencer, Ind., with Pastor Stewart Overmiller officiating. Burial
will be1 p.m. Wednesday in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will
be 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born Aug. 31, 1935, in Owen County, the daughter of Leroy and
Edna Ruth Wallace Bault. She married Richard E. Cornell; he died in 1991.
Surviving are two daughters, Louella Totten in Spencer, Ind., and Virginia
Ferguson in Charleston; one son, Richard E. Cornell Jr. of Spencer, Ind.;
three sisters, Esther Belcher of Dade City, Fla., Christene Hinton of
Patricksburg, Ind., and Martha Inman of West Lafayette, Ind.; four
brothers, Tom Bault of Spencer, Ind., Roy Bault of Greencastle, Ind., Paul
Bault of Freedom, Ind., and David Bault of Cloverdale, Ind.; one
stepbrother, Al Mardis of San Jose, Ind.; and one stepsister, Bonnie Mardis
of Canada.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, her stepmother and one
stepsister.
Mrs. Cornell was a homemaker and member of the Maranatha Baptist
Church.
