Mrs. Loyle (Beatrice R. "Beechie" Hill) Davis, 85, of Sullivan, died at 5:45
p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001 in St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 10 in the First
Christian Church in Sullivan with the Rev. Dr. David Leslie and the Rev.
Pat Rittenhouse officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday and
one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial will be in Greenhill
Cemetery in Sullivan with arrangements by the Reed Funeral Home in
Sullivan.
Born Oct. 17, 1915 in Sullivan, she was the daughter of Carl and Eva
(Heacock) Hill. She was a 1933 graduate of Sullivan High School and
attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo. where she earned a
two-year certificate in both musical and physical education. She also taught
swimming, presented a voice recital in her sophomore year and sang a short
time at the Muny Opera in St. Louis, Mo. while attending Lindenwood.
Beechie enrolled in Millikin University in Decatur in 1935 and while
working toward her bachelor of music degree with minors in physical
education, English and library science, she was a soloist in three different
churches, was a member of the symphony orchestra, the Millikin Mixed
Chorus and a special singing group. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi
Sorority and the Sigma Alpha lota professional music sorority. She also
gave piano and voice recitals before earning her bachelor's degree in 1937.
She taught music, English and P.E. in Stonington and was the organist and
soloist in the Methodist Church in Neoga from 1937 to 1939 before moving
to Decatur after her marriage. from 1939 to 1946, she did substitute
teaching in Taylorville Junior High and taught history and science in Blue
Mound.
Her husband was transferred to St. Louis, Mo. in January 1942, and their
children were both born in St. Louis. She directed the choir at the
Normandy Presbyterian Church, was soloist in the First Baptist Church and
did musical therapy work in two St. Louis hospitals during World War II.
The family returned to Decatur in 1946, and she taught in the Decatur
schools for 29 years. During that time she also served on policy committees
for the Decatur Education Assn., directed the First Baptist Church choir for
three years, was the organist for the Prairie Avenue Christian Church for
nine years, assistant organist at Central Church, worked for the United
Fund for five years and, because of her work in the Decatur Memorial
Hospital Auxiliary for 20 years, was made a life member. She was also a
life member of the Parent Teacher Assn.
Beechie and her husband retired to Sullivan in 1975, and she returned to
part-time teaching at Sullivan High School. During her years in Sullivan, she
was an elder, choir director and accompanist, and assistant organist at the
First Christian Church, was a member of the Business and Professional
Women's Club, the Sullivan Women's Civic Club, the Moultrie County
Cancer Society board, Eastern Star, Moultrie County Republican Women's
Club, the Sullivan Education Assn., the Women's Golf Assn. and served in
the board of the Sullivan Country Club.
She also performed volunteer work as pianist for the Prairie Winds, as a
pianist at the Titus Home and for the Sullivan Kiwanis Club, becoming the
first woman member of the Kiwanis in Illinois in 1987. She served as the
local Kiwanis Club secretary from 1988-1990.
She received the Who's Who award in 1983 from Sullivan High School and
was also a member of the Decatur Symphony Guild.
She married H. Loyle Davis, Oct. 21, 1939, and he preceded her in death
Dec. 29, 1975.
Survivors include a son, John L. Davis and his wife Kathy of Decatur;
daughter, Barbara and her husband Cliff Ellerbrook of Lexington, Ky.;
grandchildren, Kerrie (Mortland) Hudson of Versailles, Ky., Lara Davis of
Decatur, Jennifer Mortland of Carolina Beach, N.C. and Kirsten Davis of
Decatur; great-grandchildren, Kainan Hudson, twins, Bailey and Chase
Hudson and Madison Kathleen Davis of Decatur.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Sullivan High
School Music Dept. or to the First Christian Church.
IRENE DEGLER
J. Irene Degler, age 96, of Decatur, formerly of Mattoon, passed away at
5:40 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001, at the Imboden Creek Living Center in
Decatur.
Funeral services celebrating her life will begin at 3:00 p.m. today at the
Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Del Nack officiating. Burial will
be follow in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to
service time this afternoon at the funeral home.
Irene was born October 4, 1904, in Sulphur Springs, Iowa, a daughter of
Edward A. and Minta A. Guy Frantz. She married Victor Potts in March of
1923. He passed away in March of 1954. She married Melvin Degler
March 2, 1958. He passed away on November 7, 1964. She was also
preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
She will be missed by a number of nieces and nephews of the Frantz, Potts
and Degler families.
Mrs. Degler worked as an L.P.N. at the former Decatur Macon County
Hospital. She was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Dorans.

Lola Massey
DECATUR - Lola E. Massey, 95, of Decatur, formerly of Findlay, died at
3:50 p.m. Thursday (June 7, 2001) at St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lockart & Sons Funeral Home in
Findlay with Rev. Sonya Long officiating. Burial will be in Wright
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the
funeral home.
She was born May 16, 1906, in Campbell, Ark., the daughter of James F.
(Tint) and Eller Bradshaw Fendley. She married Troy O. Massey in 1924;
he died in 1983.
Surviving are two daughters, Willodean Everman and Marlene Coffman,
both of Decatur; one sister, Una Massey of Leslie, Ark.; five grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, four brothers and four sisters.
Mrs. Massey was a homemaker and member of the Findlay Baptist
Church.
Memorials may be made to the Fair Havens Christian Home in Decatur.
Roy Maxedon
TULARE, Calif. - Roy "Smiley" Maxedon, 80, of Tulare, Calif., formerly
of Allenville and Decatur, died Sunday (June 3, 2001).
The graveside funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the French Cemetery
in Allenville. Local arrangements are by McMullin-Young Funeral Home of
Sullivan.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie of Tulare, Calif.; two sons, Mike Maxedon
and Ben Maxedon, both of Tulare, Calif.; one daughter, Lisa Hughes of
Colorado Springs, Colo.; one brother, Lawrence Maxedon of Decatur; 10
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one son.
Mr. Maxedon was a motel manager.

Ada Selby
SULLIVAN - Ada L. Selby, 83, of Sullivan, died at 12:08 p.m. Friday
(June 8, 2001) at her residence.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the McMullin-Young Funeral
Home, Sullivan. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to
7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
She was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Kimmundy, the daughter of Jasper Newton
and Susanna Campbell Jones. She married Lloyd "Ras" Selby in 1941; he
died in 1994.
Surviving are three sons, George Selby and Jim Selby, both of Sullivan, and
John Selby of Shelbyville; two daughters, Sue Chamberlain of
Elizabethtown, Ky., and Rosemary Selby of Palo Alto, Calif.; 10
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Selby was retired from the Sullivan school district. She was a member
of the First United Methodist Church in Sullivan and the American Legion
Auxiliary, and was a Women's League Bowler of the Year.
Martha Adams
LOVINGTON - Martha E. Adams, 90, of Lovington, died at 12:47 a.m.
Thursday (June 7, 2001) in St. Mary's Hospital.
A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Keller Cemetery,
Lovington. The McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Lovington, is in charge of
arrangements.
She was born Jan. 31, 1911, in Danville, Ky., the daughter of Elvin and
Ophelia Simpson Perkins. She was a member of the First Christian Church,
Lovington. She married Harry Jerald Adams Jr. in 1949; he died in 1981.
She is survived by several nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
Memorials may be made by the Lovington Ambulance Department.
Marjorie Cohoon
CHARLESTON - Marjorie E. Cohoon, 79, of Charleston, died at 8:45 a.m.
Thursday (June 7, 2001) at her residence.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Caudill-King Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at
the funeral home.
She was born July 5, 1921, in Charleston, the daughter of Charles and
Dessie Drake Ingle. She married Carl M. Cohoon in 1940; he survives.
Also surviving are one son, Gary Cohoon; two daughters, Sharon Millage
of Charleston and Sandra Pearcy of Ashmore; three brothers, Ralph Ingle
of Decatur, Ernest Ingle of Rosco and Carl Ingle of Loves Park; nine
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, three daughters and one brother.
Beatrice Davis
SULLIVAN - Beatrice "Beechie" R. Davis, 85, of Sullivan, died at 5:45
p.m. Thursday (June 7, 2001) in St. Mary's Hospital, Decatur.

Edna Farris
SULLIVAN - Edna M. Farris, 96, of Sullivan, died at 10:47 a.m.
Wednesday (June 6, 2001) in the Illinois Masonic Home, Sullivan.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Illinois Masonic Home
Chapel. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will be in Dodge
Grove Cemetery, Mattoon. Memorials are suggested to the Illinois Masonic
Home. Reed Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Edna was born October 30, 1904, in Gays, the daughter of Hershel and
Jessie Marie Harrison Houchin. She had worked at Kuhne Manufacturing
in Mattoon and then devoted the last several years to cleaning homes and
helping to care for the families children. She had attended the Marshall
Avenue Christian Church, Mattoon and had been a member of the Mattoon
Moose and Mattoon Eagles Clubs. She married Clint Brewer on February
12, 1924 and he preceded her in death on July 6, 1936. She then married
Vernon "Bun" Fleenor on July 22, 1946 and preceded her in death on
February 5, 1954 and then she married Troy Farris on May 29, 1956 and
he preceded her in death on November 3, 1974.
Surviving are her nephews, Ron Houchin and his wife Donna of Brookville,
Indiana, Don Houchin of California; nieces Dixie Dickens and her husband
Evan of Sullivan and Saralou Letner of Mattoon.
Edna will be greatly missed by her great nephew, Greg Dickens and wife
Micah; great-great-nephew, Hutson Dickens; great-niece, Amanda Bolsen;
several other great-nieces and nephews; all her card club members at the
Moose and Eagles Clubs and all her close neighbors and friends.
Carolyn Haines
SPRINGFIELD - Carolyn Joan Haines, 75, of Springfield formerly of
Decatur, IL, died 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at Memorial
Medical Center, Springfield, IL.
Graveside services will be Saturday, June 10, 2001, 1:00 P.M., at North
Fork Cemetery, Decatur, IL. There will be no visitation. Brintlinger & Earl
Funeral Home is handling the arrangements,

Mrs. Haines was born April 29, 1926 in Decatur, IL, the daughter of Lee
and Claude (Carter) Cantwell. She married Forrest W. Haines on June 26,
1949 in Mattoon, IL. He preceded her in death on July 27, 2000.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan Haines of Springfield, IL; Step-Sister
Ramona Gebhardt of Mattoon, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, step mother, husband, and
brother.
