NEOGA - Dezarea Marie Woods, 1 month, died at 11:16 p.m. Monday
(June 4, 2001) at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria.
The funeral will be 11 a.m Thursday at Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home in
Neoga with the Rev. Judith Curry officiating. Burial will be in Oakridge
Cemetery, Effingham. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the
funeral home.
She was born May 4, 2001, in Champaign, the daughter of Charles Woods
and Jessica Evans.
Surviving are her parents, both of Neoga; grandparents, N. Gene Evans of
Neoga, Leanne Evans of Neoga, Marla VanPelt of Watson and Charles
Woods of Alamogordo, N.M.; and great-grandparents, Loyd and Aleta
Stivers of Neoga, Leonard and Rose Mary Greuel of Sigel, Ben and Kate
Bourland of Effingham, and Charles and Lorretta Woods of Watson.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather.
Florene Roan
GREENUP - Florene E. Roan, 84, of Greenup, died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday
(June 3, 2001) at her residence.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Barkley Funeral Home in
Greenup. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion (Block) Cemetery, rural Greenup.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral
home.
She was born May 14, 1917, in Greenup, the daughter of Elmer W. and
Mary Ellen (Sweeney) Glidewell. She married Wm. Harvey Roan in 1935;
he died in 1990.
Surviving are four sons, Jimmy Roan of Niles, Ohio, John Roan of
Greenup, David Roan of Mattoon and Clark Roan of Oregon; two
daughters, Mary Dora Cather of Greenup and Terri Ann Roan of
Carbondale; one sister, Flossie Wagner of Kirkland, Wash.; 12
grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Roan was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Rural
Womens Club.

Carl Walker Sr.
ST. PETERS, Missouri - Carl Raymond Walker, Sr., 84, of St. Peters,
Missouri, died at 8:16 p.m. Sunday (June 3, 2001) at his residence in St.
Peters.
The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday (June 6, 2001) at the
Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home in Neoga, Ill., with the Rev. Robert Holmes
officiating. Burial will be in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery in Neoga, Ill.
Visitation will be from noon Wednesday until service time at the funeral
home.
He was born October 8, 1916, in Cumberland County, a son of Marion and
Martha (Ray) Walker. He married J. Louise Parker on October 13, 1942,
in St. Charles, Mo.; she preceded him in death on November 20, 1996.
Survivors include a son, Carl R. Walker, Jr. of St. Peters, Mo.; a brother,
Tracey Walker and wife Juanita of Tuscola, Ill.; and a sister, Mrs. Hazel
Wilson of rural Toledo, Ill.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Mr. Walker was a retired machinist from McDonnell-Douglas Air Craft
Corp. in St. Louis, Missouri.
Charles Wilson
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - Charles Vernon Wilson, 87, of New
Braunfels, Texas, formerly of Atwood, died Thursday (May 31, 2001) at
Kirkwood Rehab Hospital in New Braunfels, Texas.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mackville Cemetery,
Atwood. The Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home in Atwood is in charge of the
arrangements. There will be no visitation.
He was born Feb. 16, 1914, in Charleston, the son of Homer Newton and
Eva Helen Kounse Wilson. He married Evelyn Casey in 1933; she
survives.
Also surviving are one son, Steve Wilson of Morgan Hill, Calif.; three
daughters, Barbara Eyestone of Champaign, Beverly Wilson Maddox of
New Braunfels, Texas, and Bonnie Chesnut of Atwood; 10 grandchildren;
and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Wilson in his youth was a professional baseball player, pitching for the
Chicago White Sox. He raised beagle hounds, quarter horses, racing
pigeons and judged horseshows for the American Quarter Horse
Association. In 1976 he retired as a process mechanic from USI in Tuscola.
He was affiliated with the Livingway Church in San Antonio.

Hazel Berry
CHARLESTON - Hazel E. Berry, 82, of Charleston, passed away at 7:00
a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001 at Prairieview Care Center in Charleston.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at the
Harper-Swickard Funeral Home in Charleston with Reverend Roy
Lineberry officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens,
Mattoon. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral
home.
Hazel was born June 18, 1918 at Kedron, Arkansas, daughter of J.W. and
Ethel Martin Allnut. She married John O. Berry September 25, 1939 in
Charleston; he survives. Also surviving are two sons: John W. Berry and
wife Sharon of Charleston, Joe C. Berry and wife Peggy of Giddings, TX;
one daughter: Patricia Edwards and husband Frank of Decatur. Nine
grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren also survive. She was
preceded in death by her parents and one sister: Dorothy Dallas.
Hazel retired from Brown Shoe Company, was a member of Charleston
Separate Baptist Church, and for many years was a foster parent for the
Department of Children and Family Services.

Bernice Brown
CHARLESTON - Bernice Brown, 79, of Charleston, passed away at 2:11
a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001 at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at
the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home with Reverend Scott Sims officiating.
Interment will be in Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to
services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Bernice was born November 19, 1921 in Coles County, daughter of Walter
and Nellie Neese Hughes. She married Harvey Brown; he preceded her in
death.
Surviving are a sister: Norma McElwee of Charleston; nieces: Patsy
Kingery, Tammy McElwee, Debbie Davis, and Jana Johnson, all of
Charleston, Lori Martin of Florida, Peggy Neff of Washington, and Mildred
Hatraw of Alaska. Nephews: Lowell McElwee, Gale McElwee, Herb
McElwee, and Allen Finney all of Charleston, Robert Finney of Georgia,
and Charles Finney of Ashmore. Brothers-in-law: John Brown and wife
Lillian and Clinton Brown and wife Joan, all of Charleston. Several
great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and three sisters.
Bernice was a member of Northside Baptist Church and a former member
and officer of the Charleston Ladies' of the Moose.

ROCKAWAY BEACH, MO. - Mary Jolley, 74, of Rockaway Beach, Mo.,
formerly of Tuscola, died at 4:25 a.m. Saturday (June 2, 2001) at her
residence.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral
Home in Tuscola with the Rev. Kenneth Roedder officiating. Burial will be
in Tuscola Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on
Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born Aug. 1, 1926, in Douglas County, the daughter of John and
Lectna Cockrill Barbee. She married Willis Clifford Jolley in 1949. He died
in 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Nacke of Arcola and Kathy Jolley of
Rockaway Beach, Mo; one step-daughter, Joan Miller of Champaign; three
brothers, Carl Barbee and Dale Barbee, both of Atwood, and Myron
Barbee of St. Joseph; two sisters, Catherine O'Neil of Danville and Shirley
Hawn of Bargersville, Ind.; three grandchildren, four step-grandchildren,
one great-granddaughter and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Mrs. Jolley was a retired cook for the Tuscola Community School District
and a member of the Tuscola Order of Eastern Star No. 44.

Genevieve C. "Gen" Grobelny, age 94, of Mattoon, passed away at 6:30
a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001, at her residence.
Mass of Christian Burial celebrating her life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on
Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church with
Father Herman J. Niebrugge celebrating. Burial will follow in the Calvary
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the
Schilling Funeral Home with a Biblical Wake service at 7:00 p.m.
Gen was born April 1, 1907, in Mattoon, the fifth daughter of Daniel and
Catherine Sieben Burtschi. She married Anthony J. "Tony" Grobelny on
June 10, 1931. He passed away November 3, 1977. She was also preceded
in death by one son, Father Daniel Vincent Grobelny, and four sisters.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Beth Coffey and husband Jerry of
Mattoon; three grandsons, Anthony "Tony" Coffey of Mattoon, Todd
Coffey and wife Jodi of New Braunfels, Texas, and Kenny Coffey and
wife Katie of Mattoon; and four great-grandchildren, Tony Coffey Jr. of
Mattoon, Rayna Coffey and Cole Coffey, both of New Braunfels, Texas,
and Isabelle Paige Coffey of Mattoon.
Mrs. Grobelny was a homemaker and also enjoyed working part-time at the
Burtschi's Book Store. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception
Roman Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella.

Gertrude K. Holmes
MATTOON - Gertrude Katherine Holmes, 94, of Mattoon, passed away at
8:45 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2001 at Douglas Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 (noon) Tuesday, June 5, 2001
at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home. Interment will be in Dodge Grove
Cemetery. Friends may call at visitation from 11:00 a.m. until service time
Tuesday.
Gertrude was born June 19, 1906 in Mattoon, daughter of William F. and
Sarah Louvisa Sink Miller. Survivors include a daughter, Lois Madonna
Fortune of Center Line, Michigan; two grandsons: James Fortune of Center
Line, Michigan and Jeffrey Young of Springfield, Illinois. One
great-granddaughter: Suzanne also survives. She was preceded in death by
one daughter: Bonnie Young, five brothers and three sisters.
Gertrude was a member of First Baptist Church. She had formerly worked
at Brown Shoe, Crawford Shoe, and the U.S. Grant Hotel.

SULLIVAN - Susan Garnet Myers, 96, of Sullivan, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday
(June 1, 2001) at the Illinois Masonic Home in Sullivan.
The graveside funeral will be at 11 a.m. today in French Cemetery in
Allenville. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today at the Illinois
Masonic Chapel in Sullivan. Reed Funeral Home in Sullivan is in charge of
the arrangements.
She was born Aug. 28, 1904, in Allenville, the daughter of Emmett and
Elizabeth Shafer Fleming. She married Pearl William Myers in 1923. He
died in 1940.
Surviving are two sons, John D. Myers and Elmo Myers, both of Windsor;
three daughters, Katherine Bouck, Rosie Leavitt and Donna Frazier, all of
Sullivan; one brother, Jessie Fleming of Chicago; two sisters, Gertrude
Lane of Bruce and Lenora Campbell of Sullivan; eight grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, four brothers and four sisters.
Mrs. Myers previously worked at Lucy Ellen Candy and the Sullivan Meat
Locker and was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Church.
