Maurice A. Probst, age 66, of rural Mattoon, passed away at 7:03 a.m.
Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Mass of Christian Burial celebrating his life will begin at 10:00 a.m.
Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church with
Father Herman J. Niebrugge celebrating. Burial will follow in the Calvary
Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. this (Monday)
evening at the Schilling Funeral Home with a Biblical Wake service at 7:30
p.m.
Maurice was born October 9, 1934, in Mattoon, the son of Alphonse and
Catherine Fuesting Probst. He married Rose Marie Creek on February 16,
1957.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie Probst of rural Mattoon; two sons,
Mike Probst of Humboldt and Roger Probst of Rock Island; one daughter,
Ronda Arthur of Mattoon; two brothers, Norman Probst and wife Johnna
of Chesterfield, Mo. and Wayne Probst and wife Edna of Lerna; one sister,
Ellen Mersman and husband John of Effingham; two grandsons, Ryne
Arthur and Nathin Arthur, both of Mattoon.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marcella Ann; one sister,
Marilyn Probst and his parents.
Mr. Probst retired from Blaw Knox in Mattoon and was owner and
operator of Paradise Plants Greenhouse. He was a member of the
Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and the Loyal Order of
the Moose. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and traveling.

Howard Ruwe
SPRINGFIELD - Howard K. "Whitey" Ruwe, 66, of Springfield, died at
5:05 p.m. Saturday (June 9, 2001) at the Regency Nursing Care Residence.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran
Church with the Rev. Thomas Radtke officiating. Burial will be in Camp
Butler National Cemetery. The Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon
County will perform military rites. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday
at the Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home in Springfield and also from 9
a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church.
He was born Nov. 23, 1934, in Strasburg, the son of Emil and Lydia
Schmitt Ruwe. He married Martha A. Davis in 1961. She died in 2000.
Surviving are two daughters, Lisa Markland of Indianapolis, Ind. and
Ginger White of Springfield; one son, Robert Ruwe of Mattoon; one
brother, Leon Ruwe of Springfield; two sisters, Melba Stewart of Mattoon
and Sandra Wahl of Strasburg; and seven grandchildren.
Mr. Ruwe was a manager for the Department of Central Management
Services and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of the Trinity
Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran High School and Trinity Lutheran
School, both of Springfield.
SHIRLEY TAYLOR SHOAP
Shirley Ann Taylor Shoap, age 68, of St. Joseph, passed away at 4:36 p.m.
Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
To honor Shirley's wishes, private family graveside services were held
Saturday, June 9, at the Janesville Cemetery officiated by her nephew,
Pastor Randy Vaultonburg. The Schilling Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
Shirley was born April 24, 1933, in Cottonwood Township, Cumberland
County, a daughter of H. Glen and Blanche Marie Howard Taylor. She
married Jesse Shoap Jr. on January 9, 1953. He passed away in December
of 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include three brothers, Gary Taylor and Warren Taylor and wife
Marjorie, all of St. Joseph and Jerry Taylor and wife Lillie of Janesville;
two sisters, Charlotte Tracy and husband Richard of Brewton, Alabama
and Cherrie Vaultonburg of Mattoon; and several nieces and nephews.
Shirley was retired from Carle Foundation Hospital in 1998, where she had
been employed for thirty-five years. Shirley had a loving heart and along
with her brother Gary, had been Mom's caregiver for several years until her
death in 1994.
Donations in memory of Shirley may be made to the donor's choice.
Charles Vaughn
CHARLESTON - Charles E. Vaughn, 71, of Charleston, died at 10 a.m.
Sunday (June 10, 2001) at his residence.

Howard Weller
HINDSBORO - Howard Mason Weller, 79, of Hindsboro, died at 2:55 a.m.
Sunday (June 10, 2001) at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Shrader Funeral
Home in Arcola with Dick Miller officiating. Burial will be in Arcola
Cemetery with military rites by the Arcola American Legion and VFW
Post. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
He was born June 22, 192, in Hindsboro the son of Charles and Ruth
Cuppy Weller. He married Betty Ramsey in 1941. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Larry Weller of Brooksville, Fla., and Dick
Weller of Hindsboro; one brother, Norman Weller of Houston, Texas; one
sister, Marjorie Harrington of Arcola; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Weller was a retired Hindsboro postmaster and U.S. Navy veteran of
WW II. He was a member of the Kemp Church of Christ and Citizen
Advisory Council.

Jack Canavan
SHELBYVILLE - Jack T. Canavan, 81, of Shelbyville, died at 6:05 a.m.
Friday (June 8, 2001) at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Glenwood Cemetery with
Rev. Robert Litteral officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Shelby
County Honor Guard. Howe & Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville is in
charge of the arrangements.
He was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Tower Hill, the son of Thomas Edward and
Nell Bertha Clark Canavan. He married Marjorie J. Daggett in 1942; she
survives.
Also surviving are one son, Glenn C. Canavan of Shelbyville, and one
sister, Vivian H. Tate of Shelbyville.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Mr. Canavan retired from J.J. Swartz in Decatur and was a U.S. Army
veteran of World War II. He was affiliated with the Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to the World War II Veterans Memorial in
Washington.
Joe Cutright
CASEY - Joe Lewis Cutright, 85, of Casey died at 11:07 a.m. Sunday (July
15, 2001) at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Clayton Ervin
HIDALGO - Clayton W. Ervin, 86, of Hidalgo died at 7:35 a.m. Sunday
(July 15, 2001) at Cumberland Nursing Center.
The graveside funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Aten Cemetery in
Hidalgo. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the cemetery.
Barkley Funeral Home in Greenup is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Hidalgo, the son of Ike and Esther Jones
Ervin. He married Nova Swick. She died in 1975.
Surviving are two sons, Carroll Ervin of Toledo and John Ervin of
Greenup; two daughters, Maxine Calvert of Ste. Marie and Angela Miller of
Mount Carmel; one brother, Paul Ervin of Willow Hill; 11 grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son and two brothers.
Mr. Ervin was a retired welder.
Noah Ford
TUSCOLA - Noah Rhylley Ford, infant son of Melody Dawn Patton and
Robert Alan Ford, was stillborn at 1 p.m. Friday (July 13, 2001) at Sarah
Bush Lincoln Health Center.
The graveside funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Tuscola Cemetery
with the Rev. Clyde Snyder officiating. Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home is
in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his parents of Mattoon; two brothers, Brandon Gregory
and Dylan Christopher, both at home; one sister, Mikayla Ann at home;
maternal grandparents, Larry and Beverly Schweighart of Tuscola; and
paternal grandparents, Gene and Carol Ford of Villa Grove.

Nema Hood
Mrs. Nema Evelyn Hood, 90, of Humboldt, died at 7:21 AM Sunday, July
15, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital near Mattoon.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at
Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N. Locust Street, Arcola, with Rev. Jack
Woods officiating. Burial will be in Humboldt Cemetery. Visitation will be
held one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Hood was born July 3, 1911 in Janesville, IL, a daughter of Banner
and Petrolia Axton Bennett. She married Elmer Sutton, Sr. on June 6,
1930; he preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1966. She then married
Charles Hood on Feb. 21, 1968; he preceded her in death on Sept. 18,
1980.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Key of Sullivan; 2 stepsons, Dale
and Phillip Hood both of Mattoon; 1 stepdaughter, Neva Hood of Mattoon;
sister, Thelma Grooms of Mattoon; 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren;
10 step grandchildren; and 6 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by 2 sons and 1 brother.
Mrs. Hood graduated from Eastern Illinois High School in Charleston. Mrs.
Hood and her sister, Thelma Grooms owned and operated the Sisters
Market Grocery Store in Humboldt for many years. She was a member of
the Humboldt Rebekah Lodge for over 68 years, Coles County Ladies
Home Extension, and the Humboldt United Methodist Church.
