CHRISTINE MERCER GATES

CHRISMAN - Christine Mercer Gates, 95, of Chrisman, formerly of
Charleston and Springfield, went to rest in the arms of her Lord and
Saviour, at 7:10 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2001 at Pleasant Meadows Christian
Village in Chrisman.

Services celebrating her journey into glory will be held at 10:00 a.m.
Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at Central Christian Church with ministers,
Kenneth Bass and John McArthur officiating. Interment will follow in
Grandview Cemetery, rural Edgar County. Visitation will be from 6:00 to
8:00 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2001 at the Caudill-King Funeral Home, 1117
Jackson, Charleston.

Christine was born June 30, 1906 in Cumberland County, daughter of
William A. and Stella Parker Mercer. She married William S. Gates,
August, 1956; he preceded her into Heaven in 1966. Survivors include two
step-sons: William B. Gates of Pana, IL and Richard L. Gates of Kenesaw,
GA. Also surviving are nieces and nephews: Mrs. Mary Hudson of
Charleston, Edward Roberts and Charles Roberts both of Mattoon, Arthur
Roberts of Charleston, Mrs. Esther Reeley of Rogue River, OR, Paul
Mercer of Hindsboro, Mrs. Virginia Webster of Paris, Mrs. Stella Brazzell
of Oakland, Charlotte Simons of Wichita, KS and Rex Mercer of St. Louis,
MO. Several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: Carl, Arthur, and Raymond
Mercer and one sister: Irene Roberts, one step-son, and one
step-great-granddaughter.

Christine graduated from Paris High School and the Junior College course
of study at Eastern Illinois State Teachers' College. She completed graduate
work at Indiana State University. She taught in several rural schools in
Illinois for twenty years, and in Christian Elementary School in Springfield
for thirteen years. She attended Central Christian Church while living in
Charleston, and was currently a member of the Chrisman Christian Church,

Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Christian Church in
Charleston or the Chrisman Christian Church.

Lillian Griffin

SHELBYVILLE - Lillian L. Griffin, 83, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at
2:45 PM Sunday, July 8, 2001 in St. Vincent's Memorial Hospital in
Taylorville, IL.

Mrs. Griffin was born Aug. 24, 1917 in Shelby, Co. the daughter of
Lawrence and Edith Crook Foor.

She was a prominent business women in the Shelbyville and Mattoon, IL,
areas. She owned and operated Griffin's Restaurant in Shelbyville and the
Airport Steakhouse and Farmer's Store both in Mattoon. She was a
member of Royal Neighbors.

She married Wendell Griffin in 1938 and he passed away in 1970.

Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Davis and husband Jack of Cantrall, IL;
grandchildren: Jill Nessler and husband Fred, Heather Schenck and husband
Charles, Jack Davis, Rachel and Georgia Griffin; six great-grandchildren;
one sister, Helma Koslofski of Decatur, IL; brothers, Irvin Foor of Decatur,
Jess Foor of Paris, IL; sister-in-law, Betty Martin and husband Don of
Tower Hill, IL; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wendell L. Griffin; parents;
son, Jim Griffin in 1998; two sisters, Delilah Tynan and Lenore Shuff and
one brother, Rudy Foor.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday July 10, 2001 in the
Lockart and Sons Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Visitation will be from
11:00 AM until service time on Tuesday. Burial will be in Glenwood
Cemetery.

MARTIN HOMANN

Martin Daniel Homann, age 90, of Mattoon, passed away at 4:45 a.m.
Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the Mattoon Health Care Center.

Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at
the St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Dorans with the Reverend Scott Kozisek
officiating. Burial will follow in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will
be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the Schilling Funeral
Home.

Martin was born January 22, 1911 in Humboldt Township in Coles
County, a son of G. Herman and Kate Hesse Homann. He married Sylvia
A. Mueller on February 9, 1941. She passed away on February 10, 1986.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Raymond Homann, five
brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Johnson of Charleston; one brother,
Otto Homann of Terre Haute, Ind.; one sister-in-law, Meta Homann of
Centralia; two grandchildren, Lisa Auten and Tony Johnson and wife Patty,
all of Charleston; three great-grandchildren, Megan Auten, Dylan Johnson
and Deanna Johnson, all of Charleston.

Mr. Homann was a farmer all his life from which he retired in 1976. He
was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Layman's
League, the Men's Club and the Coles County Farm Bureau.

Memorial gifts are suggested to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Organ
Fund, American Heart Association or a charity of the donor's choice.

TERESE PATTERSON

Terese Jane Patterson, age 92, of Mattoon, formerly of Chicago, passed
away at 10:24 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2001, at the Convalescent Care Center
in Mattoon.

Memorial services celebrating her life will be held at a later date. The
Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Terese was born May 2, 1909 in Chicago, a daughter of John and Augusta
Thompson. She married Marvin DeSallon Patterson on December 22,
1941. He passed away on June 27, 1990. She was also preceded in death
by four brothers and one sister.

Survivors include one daughter, Marjane "Pat" Vaught and husband James
of Mattoon; five grandsons, Gary Filipiak and wife Susan of Denver, Co.,
Ken Filipiak and wife Barbara of Collinsville, Mark Filipiak and wife Kara
of Charlotte, N.C., Dr. James Filipiak and wife Sarah of Mattoon,
step-grandson, Shelby Vaught of Houston, Texas; and three
great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Patterson was formerly employed as a bookkeeper for a stockyard
and also was a broker for a Real Estate Agency that she and her husband
co-owned and operated. She was a member of the Eastern Star for over
forty years and also enjoyed her memberships in the Eagles Club and
Senior Citizens. She was an avid bingo and card player and enjoyed playing
with her dogs and taking long walks. However, her first love was watching
her grandchildren grow.

Memorial gifts are suggested to the Coles County Humane Association or
Senior Citizens in Mattoon.

Hasie Steinberg

CHARLESTON - Hasie Steinberg, 77, of Charleston, died at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 9, at West Lawn
Cemetery in Chicago. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m.
Sunday, July 15, at the Mattoon Jewish Community Center, 1608
Richmond Ave.

Hasie was born Feb. 23, 1924, in Chicago, the daughter of Oscar Lang and
Rose Lang Goldman and the stepdaughter of Sam Goldman. She married
Aaron Steinberg June 18, 1944. He survives.

Hasie and husband Aaron operated the Hertz Car Rental Agency at Coles
County Memorial Airport for 10 years, and she was an accountant in the
construction business for 20-25 years.

She was preceded in death by their beloved daughter, Judith Sherry
Steinberg, her parents, stepfather, brother-in-law, Seymour Kessler, and
brother-in-law, Herbert Kahn.

Also surviving are her sister, Syma Kessler of Florida; sister-in-law,
Rosalind Kahn of Waukegan; and several nieces and nephews and
great-nieces and great-nephews.

Hasie was a long-time member of the Mattoon Jewish Community Center
(JCC) and served as its treasurer for several years. Memorials may be
made to the JCC, c/o: Aaron Steinberg, 2212 Cortland Drive, Charleston,
IL 61920.

John Gee

MATTOON - John Edward Gee, 89, of Arcola, died at 12:15 a.m. Friday
(July 6, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist
Catholic Church in Arcola with Father Chris Brey officiating. Burial will
follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Pesotum. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m.
Monday with a wake service at 7:45 p.m. at the Edwards Funeral Home in
Arcola.

Gee was born on Nov. 29, 1911, in Arcola. He was the son of Charles A.
and Dosy M. Munson Gee. He married Irene Kleiss in 1930; she preceded
him in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Hausmann of Prescott, Ariz.; one son,
William Gee of Grass Valley, Calif.; one brother, Fred Gee of Murray, Ky.;
six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Gee was a member of the St. John the Baptist Church. He was a building
contractor for over 40 years.

Memorials may be made to St. John the Baptist Church in Arcola.

Teresa L. Moschenrose

Teresa L. Moschenrose, 40, of Mattoon, died at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, July
5, 2001, at the St. Louis University Medical Center, due to complication
from liver failure. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 2:00
p.m. Tuesday, at the Epperson Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Phillip
Moschenrose and Rev. Van Frownfelter officiating. Burial will be in Dodge
Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the
funeral home.

She was born Oct. 31, 1960, in Charleston, IL. She was the daughter of
Louis and Betty (Willis) Parker. She married Mike Moschenrose March 8,
1996, in Mattoon. She is survived by her husband and mother; two sons,
Louis Edwards and his wife Mary Beth, Tommy Murdock; one daughter,
Sunday Moschenrose; one stepson, Travis Moschenrose and his wife
Brandy; two brothers, Tom Parker and his wife Brenda, John Parker; one
grandson, Wyatt Krikie all of Mattoon; and one grandchild that is on the
way. She was preceded in death by her father.

Teresa was a very outgoing person, she was also a talented singer. She will
always be remembered by the love that she showed for her family and
friends. She was a member of the Mattoon Eagles Women's Auxiliary.
Memorials may be made to the Lincolnland Hospice.

JAMES ABBOTT

James Harmon "Jim" Abbott, age 81, of Mattoon, passed away at 9:50 a.m.
Thursday, July 5, 2001, at his home.

Graveside services celebrating his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday
at the Jonathan Creek Township Cemetery, east of Sullivan on the Cadwell
Road, with the Reverend Henry Graham officiating. Visitation will be held
from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday evening at the Schilling Funeral Home.

Jim was born November 20, 1919 in Sullivan, a son of Ethel Harmon
"Red" Abbott and Esther Clayton Abbott. He married Norma Lee Cullen in
1945. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons and three daughters, Jamey Lee Lindenau of
St. Paul, Minn., Constance E. Abbott of Minneapolis, Minn., Frank Eddie
Abbott of Mattoon, Marilyn Fik of Chicago, Andrew James Abbott of
Minneapolis, Minn., and Larry Mitchell Harschbarger of Hendersonville,
Tenn.; three brothers, Oliver Abbott of Effingham, Cecil Abbott of
Mattoon and John Abbott of Salt Lake City, Utah; ten grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren and special relatives, Paul and Cindy Abbott of rural
Neoga.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Jim retired from Eastern Illinois University Janitorial Services in 1983. He
served fourteen years in the United States Air Force including throughout
World War II. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4325. He also enjoyed his memberships in
the Mattoon Eagles Club and the Charleston Sportsmen's Club. Jim loved
hunting, fishing, trapshooting and horse racing but was known for his
musicianship. He was an accomplished guitar player who loved Country
and Western music and played and promoted it throughout Central Illinois.
He was also recognized as a skilled restorer of stringed instruments.

Neva Higgins

MATTOON, IL - Mrs. Neva M. Higgins, 87, of Mattoon, Illinois, formerly
of Neoga, Illinois, died at 7:40 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2001 at Sarah Bush
Lincoln Health Center, Coles County, Ill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2001 at the Swengel-O'Dell
Funeral Home, Neoga, Ill., with the Rev. John Crutcher of Mattoon, Ill.,
officiating. Burial will be in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery, Neoga, Ill.
Visitation will be one hour before the service at the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral
Home, Neoga, Ill.

She was born June 17, 1914, in Cumberland County, Ill., a daughter of
Charles M. and Lyda (Davis) Jackson. She married Clement D. Higgins on
July 3, 1944 in Neoga, Illinois; he preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1982.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Lois Gaskins of Neoga, Ill.; a niece, Mrs.
Cheryl Adam of Sullivan, Ill.; two nephews John Jackson of Neoga, Ill.,
and Dan Jackson of Toledo, Ill.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Warren Jackson; one half sister,
Mrs. Irene Dial; and one nephew.

Mrs. Higgins was a housewife and had retired from the Brown Shoe
Factory of Mattoon, Ill. She was a member of the First Alliance Church of
Mattoon.

Memorials may be made to the First Alliance Church, 1312 Broadway
Ave., Mattoon, Ill. 61938

Elmer McReynolds

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio - Elmer Loren McReynolds, 90, of Massillon and
Canton, OH, died July 3, 2001, at Sunbridge Care Center, Circleville, OH.
He was born in Fulton, MO, and graduated from Missouri School of Mines
in 1934. He worked for Jones & Laughlin Steel Co., Morse Chain Co.,
Sharon Steel Co. and retired in 1976 after 32 years with the Union Drawn
Division of Republic Steel. He served in the metallurgical and sales
departments.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Louise Morgan
McReynolds. He is survived by a son Loren Edwin McReynolds,
Chillicothe, OH; daughters Jane Ann Kennedy, Tallahassee, FL; and Nancy
Elizabeth Schuneman, Tacoma, WA; two grandsons and three
great-grandchildren.

Burial will be held in Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, IL at the
convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to
Hospice of Pickaway, Co., 600, N. Pickaway St., Circleville, OH 43113.
Arrangements are under the direction of Haller Funeral Home.
