ARTHUR - Caroline W. Miller, 75, of rural Arthur, died at
5:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 3, 2001) at her residence.
The funeral will be 9 a.m. Friday at the family residence,
431 N. Douglas County Road 100 E., with Bishop Eli
Schlabach officiating. Burial will be in the Miller Cemetery
in rural Arthur. Visitation will be any time prior to the
funeral at the family residence. Edwards Funeral Home in
Arcola is in charge of arrangements.
She was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Bourbon Township, the
daughter of William B. and Elsie Kauffman Schrock. She
married Eli William Miller of Arthur; he survives.
Surviving are one son, Levi William Miller of Arthur; one
daughter, Elsie Miller of Arthur; two brothers, Ben W. and
Martin W. Schrock, both of Arthur; two sisters, Katie
Kauffman of Arthur and Lucy Yutzy of Arcola; and seven
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Mrs. Miller was a member of the Old Order Amish.
Wanda Miller
MATTOON - Wanda J. Miller, 76, of Mattoon, died
Tuesday (July 3, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health
Center.
There will be no services. Adams Funeral Chapel is in
charge of arrangements.
She was born June 18, 1925, in Mattoon, the daughter of
James F. and Olive Ruie (Hamilton) Smith. She married
Harold W. Miller in 1974; he preceded her in death.
Surviving are one brother, James F. Smith Jr. of Windsor,
and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Miller was also preceded in death by two brothers
and two sisters.
MERLIN "BLIMP" VAUGHT
Merlin A. "Blimp" Vaught, age 70, of Mattoon, passed
away at 9:08 p.m., Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at the Sarah
Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Funeral services celebrating his live will begin at 10:30
a.m. Friday at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Rev.
Barbara Short officiating. Burial will follow in the French
Cemetery, rural Allenville. Visitation will be held from
9:00 a.m. until service time on Friday morning at the
funeral home.
He was born October 30, 1930 in Mattoon, a son of Walter
and Grace Washburn Vaught. He married Bernice Strater
Dodd on October 28, 1978.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Vaught of Mattoon;
two daughters, Barbara A. Maples and husband Mark of
Charleston and Elizabeth "B. J." Quast and husband Ed of
rural Lerna; two stepsons, Robert E. Dodd and wife Pam
of Montrose and William H. Dodd and wife Louise of
Allenville; two stepdaughters, Kathy Jo Nichols of
Mattoon and Karen S. Jordan and husband Roger of rural
Neoga; eighteen grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four grandchildren, his
parents and two brothers.
Mr. Vaught was a bricklayer for over forty years and a
member of the Local No. 55 Union Brick Alliance. He was
also a member of the Marshall Avenue Christian Church,
Moose Lodge and the Eagles Club. He especially enjoyed
the outdoor sports of fishing and golfing.

Marjorie Witt
SHELBYVILLE - Marjorie E. Witt, 69, of Shelbyville, died
at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday (July 4, 2001) in Shelbyville
Manor.
A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in
Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, with the Rev. David
McHenry officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday
at the Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville.
She was born Jan. 10, 1932, in Shelbyville, the daughter
of Walter Roy and Jessie Beatrice Bryson West. She
married Robert Gale Witt in 1950; he died in 1989.
Surviving are three daughters, Julie Anderson of Clinton,
Sheri Jeffers of Shelbyville and Lea Howard of
Champaign; four brothers, Forrest, August, Bill and
Kenneth West, all of Shelbyville; six grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother and three
sisters.
Mrs. Witt worked in purchasing and later the billing
department at the Shelby Memorial Hospital before
retiring. She was a member of the Cornerstone
Community Fellowship in Shelbyville.

Carlin Wright
MATTOON - Carlin R. Wright, 67, of Mattoon, died at
10:43 p.m. Sunday (July 1, 2001) at his residence.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at the Camp
Butler National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11
a.m. today at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home.
He was born April 2, 1934, in Vandalia, the son of Curtis
Paul and Frances Lucille Webster Wright. He married
Margaret Lillian Watkins; she preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Curtis Wright of Mattoon and
Carlin Wright of Sullivan; one daughter, Ramona Harris of
Cowden; one brother, Carmi "Tex" Wright of Mitchell; 23
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, one
brother and one sister.
Mr. Wright retired from the army after 20 years in the
service; he was a veteran of the Korean conflict and
Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion and
VFW.
VERNON BROWNING
Vernon Jefferson Browning, age 75, of Mattoon, passed away at
11:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln
Health Center.
Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 1:30 p.m.
on Wednesday at the Schilling Funeral Home with the
Reverend Virgil Baker officiating.
Burial will follow in the Beals Cemetery, east of Trilla.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. this (Tuesday) evening at
the funeral home.
Vernon was born January 28, 1926, in Thebes, a son of
John H. and Liza Allen Browning.
He married Doris Louise Dobbs on November 29, 1947, in Charleston.
Survivors include his wife, Doris L. Browning of Mattoon;
two sons, Billy J. Browning and wife Shirley and
Bobby D. Browning and wife Brenda, all of Mattoon;
five grandchildren, Angie J. Browning of Windsor, Michelle L. Gill
and husband Kyle of rural Mattoon, Matthew P. Browning
and Kimberly L. Browning, both of Mattoon and Adam L. Browning
and wife Sandra of Camargo; and one great-grandson,
Daimon M. Browning of Mattoon.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Browning
and several brothers and sisters.
Mr. Browning was first employed as a manager of the
Star Service Station in Mattoon and later retired as
a carpenter and co-owner and operator of Browning
Construction.
He was a member of the Maranatha Baptist Church.
Ida Dawson
KANKAKEE - Ida L. Dunbar Dawson, 95, of Kankakee, formerly of
Lovington and Lake City, died at 9:30 a.m. Sunday (July 29, 2001)
at her daughter's home in Kankakee.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reed Funeral Home,
Sullivan.
Burial will be in Keller Cemetery, Lovington.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. until time of service Wednesday
at the funeral home.
She was born Nov. 12, 1905, in Fayette County, the daughter
of Harvey and Ruth Threewit Markley. She married C.W. Dunbar
in 1927; he died in 1951. She married H.O. Dawson in 1960;
he died in 1967.
Surviving are one daughter, Vivian Brumitt of Kankakee;
one brother, Ivan Markley of Sullivan; and special friend,
Debby Sherwood of Sullivan.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers and three
sisters.
Mrs. Dawson had worked at Munchs Drugstore in Lovington, was
post mistress at Lake City from 1967 to 1979, and operated a
sewing and alterations business from her home.
She was a member of the Lovington United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Lovington Ambulance Service.
Heather Harmon
LOUISVILLE - Heather E. Harmon, 23, of Louisville, died at 4 p.m.
Thursday (July 26, 2001) at her residence.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Neal Funeral Home in Louisville.
Burial will be in Shouse Chapel Cemetery in Bible Grove.
She was born Dec. 31, 1977, in Effingham, the daughter of Michael
and Susan L. Brown Harmon.
Surviving are her father of Louisville; her grandmother, Ellen Harmon
of Louisville; two daughters, McKenzie and Taylor Paton of Louisville;
one brother, Eric Harmon of Louisville; one sister, Holly Anderson
of Casey; and special friend, Marsha McDowell of Mattoon.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
Ms. Harmon worked at Stevens Cabinet.
Memorials may be made to the Heather Harmon Children's Fund.
Vena Harris
ROBINSON - Vena Harris, 76, of Robinson, formerly of Casey,
died Saturday (July 28, 2001) at her residence.
A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Bellair Cemetery.
The Markwell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born Oct. 20, 1924, in Monticello, Ky., the daughter
of John Ballinger Parmley and Ferbie Gross Parmley.
She married Russell Harris in 1943; he died in 1985.
Surviving are one son, Larry "Butch" Harris of Annapolis;
four brothers, Roscoe Parmley of Indianapolis, Kenneth Parmley
of Ridge Farm, Lawrence Parmley of Decatur, Ala., and James Parmley
of Carmel, Ind.; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers.
Mrs. Harris had retired from L.S. Heath and Son in Robinson.
Harlingen-Sigrid Lawyer
OAKLAND - Harlingen-Sigrid R. Lawyer, 72, died
Saturday (July 28, 2001) at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 7, 1928, in Oakland, the daughter of
Layton and Clarice Swinford.
