Rita Canull

TUSCOLA - Rita Louise Canull, 52, of Tuscola, died at 4:25 a.m. Saturday (July 21, 2001) at her residence.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home in Tuscola. Burial will be in the Tuscola Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

She was born July 17, 1949, in Tuscola, the daughter of Kenneth and Charlotte Winsor Donnals. She married Rick Canull in 1994. He survives.

Also surviving are her mother, Charlotte Winsor of Mattoon; six sons, Robert Edwards of Sesser, Terry Edwards, Bobby Edwards and Josh Edwards, all of Tuscola, Mike Edwards of Vero Beach, Fla., and Kenny Donnals of Sparta; three daughters, Teresa White and Tracy Edwards, both of Vero Beach, Fla. and Tela Edwards of Mount Pulaski; four brothers, Larry Donnals of Mount Carmel, Gene Donnals of Tuscola, Kenneth Donnals of Salis, Calif., and Pat Donnals of Casey; two sisters, Betty White of Mount Pulaski and Verlita Gabbard of Tuscola; and 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers.

Mrs. Canull was a member of the Tuscola Church of Nazarene. She worked as a housekeeper at the Tuscola Super 8 Motel for 13 years. Memorials can be made to Lincolnland Hospice Unit.

Catherina Crepps

MATTOON - Catherina A. Crepps, 93, of Mattoon, died at 2:50 p.m. Sunday (July 22, 2001) at Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home.

Arrangements are incomplete at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home.

Gary Crow

MARTINSVILLE - Gary Crow, 52, of Martinsville, died at 6:23 p.m. Friday (July 20, 2001) at Douglas Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mattoon.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Greenwell Funeral Home with the Rev. George Nika officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born Jan. 28, 1949, in Terre Haute, Ind., the son of Boyd and Lois Jane Neidigh Crow.

Surviving are two nieces, Carry Evland of Paris and Tracy Hausman of Newport News, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Memorials may be made to the Spectrum Fund, Carle Foundation, in Urbana.

James R. Fairchild

MATTOON­ - James R. (Jim) Fairchild, 74, lost his life at home while battling cancer at 2:20 p.m., 21 July 2001.

Jim was born June 17, 1927 in Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, to Roberto W. and Sarah M. (Freele) Fairchild. He married Katherine E.L. Phillips on August 31, 1948.

Jim graduated from Mattoon High School on June 1, 1945. He enlisted in the Navy on May 23, 1945 and was released to the Navy Reserves on June 24, 1946. He listed in the Army on May 28, 1948, and retired from the Army as a Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-3) on July 31, 1967. He served in the Philippines during World War II, in Korea during the Korean War, in Germany during the Cold War, and in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Jim worked at General Electric from 1967 to 1983.

Jim was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, father, and two brothers, John and William (Bill). He is survived by his sons: Michael and his wife Marilyn of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Clifford and his wife Pam of Mattoon; and Jeffrey and his wife Lori of Geneva, IL. His grandchildren: Blake and Lauren of Mattoon; and Grant and Mackenzie of Geneva, IL. He is also survived by his sisters: Katherine Jones of Boulder Junction, Wisconsin and Jane Strotman of Annapolis, Maryland.

Visitation will be at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at the funeral home. Interment with military rites will follow in Dodge Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

ROBERT JONES

Robert L. "Bob" Jones, age 74, of Mattoon, passed away at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2001, at the Memorial Medical Cancer Center in Springfield.

Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the St. John's Lutheran Church with the Reverend Bruce D. Osborne officiating, assisted by the Reverend Delton L. Nack. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Schilling Funeral Home. Private family graveside services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday morning at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Belleville, Illinois.

Bob was born September 4, 1926, in East St. Louis, a son of James A. and Annie Lee (Lloyd) Jones. He married Arlyne F. Vollmer on November 26, 1949.

Survivors include his wife, Arlyne Jones of Mattoon; two sons, Kevin B. Jones and wife Beth and their sons, Andrew and Kendall, all of Raleigh, North Carolina and Brian K. Jones and wife Gina and their son Garrett, all of Mattoon; one daughter, Kimberly B. Faller and husband Mark and their children Dustin, Melissa and Christopher, all of Springfield; his father, James A. Jones of Mattoon; two brothers, Thomas Jones and wife Catherine of Spokane, Washington and Richard Jones and wife Martha of Fairview Heights; and sister-in-law, Pat Jones of Cahokia.

He was preceded in death by his mother and one brother, Norman Jones.

Mr. Jones was retired from Blaw-Knox Construction Equipment in Mattoon. He was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Elder and Treasurer of the Church. He was also a member of the Men's Club at the Church. Bob was a Navy veteran serving during World War II.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

John G. Woodyard

CHARLESTON - John G. Woodyard, 80, of Charleston, formerly of Ashmore, passed away at 12:35 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Boaz officiating. Interment will follow in Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

John was born October 3, 1920 at Rardin, son of Jesse R. and Flora E. Courtney Woodyard. He married Ida May Matlock, November 23, 1946 at Charleston; she survives. Also surviving are two daughters: Margie Sue and husband, Max Carpenter, Sr. of Charleston and Jane and husband, Harold Clem of Logansport, IN. Two brothers: Robert L. Woodyard of Charleston and Leonard E. Woodyard of Springfield; three sisters: Gladys Lafferty of Charleston, Mary Hackett of Westfield, and Pauline Wright of Charleston, as well as four grandchildren, one step-grandchild, four great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by two sisters.

John was a retired operating engineer, having worked more than twenty-five years at Charleston Stone Company. He attended the Ashmore Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Kansas American Legion and the Charleston V.F.W. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashmore Presbyterian Church or the American Heart Association.

HAROLD ARBUCKLE

Harold L. Arbuckle, age 70, of Mattoon, passed away at 8:37 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at his home surrounded by his family.

A memorial service celebrating his life will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Mattoon Christian Church with the Reverend Steve Shepherd officiating. The Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harold was born January 26, 1931, in Tiskilwa, a son of Leslie Dean and Vivian Marie Foster Arbuckle. He married Darlene F. Bugiyne on November 18, 1950.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Arbuckle of Mattoon; one daughter, Cynthia Ingle and husband Robert of Mattoon; one brother, LaVerne Arbuckle and wife Vicky Ann of Sublette; three sisters, Hazel Forbis of Yuma, Ariz., Gloria Anderson and husband Leonard of Amboy and Virginia Welsh of Dixon; two grandsons, Robert Ingle Jr. and wife Laura of Mattoon and Terry Henry and wife Melissa of Urbana, Mo.; four great-grandchildren, Sharee Henry, Terry Henry Jr., Alicia Ingle and Charity Ingle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Virgil Leroy Arbuckle and Eugene Wayne Arbuckle.

Mr. Arbuckle served as a general foreman for both Tube Lok and Superior Manufacturing. He was a member of the Mattoon Christian Church, the Eagles Club in Mattoon and was former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. Harold was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict.

Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Lincolnland.

Darrell Atkins

MARTINSVILLE - Darrell Atkins, 86, of Martinsville, died at 2:55 a.m. Wednesday (July 18, 2001) in Burnside Nursing Home, Marshall.

Arrangements are incomplete at the Greenwell Funeral Home.

Ella Chaney

EFFINGHAM - Ella Belle Martin Chaney, 78, of Effingham, formerly of Casey, died at 2:38 p.m. Tuesday (July 17, 2001) at St. Anthony's Hospital in Effingham.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Markwell Funeral Home, Casey, with the Rev. Ivan Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the Hazel Dell Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

She was born March 6, 1923, in Rose Hill, the daughter of Eugene Earl Baker and Neva Maude Cullums Baker. She married Roy Martin in 1939; he died in 1953. She married Walter Chaney in 1979; he died in 1984.

Surviving are two sons, Cecil Martin of Casey and Alan Martin of Texas; three daughters, Barbara Tarr of Dietrich, Carol Farrell of Portage and Deborah Pillars of Mt. Vernon; three half brothers, Wayne Martin of Mattoon, Dale Martin of Robinson and Calvin Martin of Lake Forest; two half sisters, Anna Lee Baker of Newton and Mildred Maxine Yockey of Scherville, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Chaney was a homemaker. She was a member of the Cummins United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Fund or American Cancer Fund.

JAMES FUNKHOUSER

James Arnold Funkhouser Jr., age 74, of San Diego, California, formerly of Neoga, passed away at 3:57 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2001 at the Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California.

Graveside interment services celebrating his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, at the Dodge Grove Cemetery with Pastor Jerry Buster of the Mattoon Free Methodist Church officiating. Visitation and funeral services will be held in San Diego, California today at the Metropolitan Community Church. The Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

James was born October 31, 1926, in rural Neoga, Illinois, a son of James Arnold and Oma Parker Funkhouser Sr.

Survivors include life partner, Richard H. Vosburgh of San Diego, Calif.; two nieces, Betty Miller and husband Bud and Kay White and husband Steve, all of Mattoon; one nephew, Jim Lockhart and wife Zada of Decatur, Illinois; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Madonna; and half-brothers, Foster D. "Red" Lockhart and Leo B. Lockhart.

Mr. Funkhouser worked as a medical bacteriologist from 1948 through 1963, sold real estate in the Palo Alto, California area from 1963-1967, resided in Mexico from 1967-1974 and later retired to the San Diego area. He was a member of the Metropolitan Community Church in San Diego and served in the U.S. Army. He will be remembered lovingly through his humorous stories he shared with his family of his extensive world travels.
