Vernon E. Smith, age 90, of Cooks Mills, passed away at 11:18 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2001, at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Henry Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, southwest of Cooks Mills, with military rites by the V.F.W. Post 4325. Visitation will be held from noon until service time on Thursday afternoon at the funeral home.
Vernon was born February 9, 1911, in Coles County, a son of Henry C. and Estella Cameron Smith. He married Florence Elizabeth Bartimus on November 17, 1934.
Survivors include his wife, Florence E. Smith of Cooks Mills; one son, Randall E. Smith and wife Karla of Cooks Mills; one daughter, Marjorie Towle and husband Don of Cooks Mills; two brothers, Delmar J. Smith and Robert D. Smith and wife Eleanor, all of Cooks Mills; four grandchildren, Stacey L. Bunyard and husband Keith of Cooks Mills, Tami Jennings and husband Troy of Mattoon, Todd A. Smith of Cooks Mills and Douglas A. Towle of Mattoon; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Anthony L. Smith; one infant daughter, Peggy J. Smith; and two brothers, Charles Smith and Harvey Smith.
Mr. Smith was employed with Century Broom, retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, the V.F.W. Post 4325 and served in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1944-1946 for which he received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Campaign Stars.
Paul Stewart
WITT - Paul C. Stewart, 81, of Witt, formerly of Charleston, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday (July 12, 2001) at the Hillsboro Hospital.
A service will be conducted at a later date. The Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Homes, Nokomis, is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born March 19, 1920, in Charleston, the son of John W. and Hannah Monroe Talbot Stewart officiating. He married Mary Lee Durston in 1946; she survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Robert C. Stewart of St. Louis, Joseph M. Stewart of Dupo and David J. Stewart of Atlantic City, N.J.; one brother, Myrtle F. Orr of Hobe Sound, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Mr. Stewart was a high school teacher and coach in Dupo. He was a member of the Dupo Congregational Church, the American Legion 485, Witt Lions Club, Disabled American Veterans, Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association and National Retired Teachers Association. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran.
HERBERT WATERS
ARTHUR, ILLINOIS - Herbert Berleu Waters, 82, of Arthur, died at 12:50 AM Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, July 19, 2001 at the Arthur United Methodist Church, 128 E. Illinois, Arthur, with Rev. James Elder officiating. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM Wednesday (today) at Shrader Funeral Home, 431 S. Vine Street, Arthur.
Mr. Waters was born Oct. 13, 1918 in Bourbon, Illinois, a son of William and Anna Cambridge Waters. He married Dorothy Oye in Arthur on Oct. 18, 1941. She survives.
Besides his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by one son, Larry Waters and his wife Eileen of Mahomet; 2 grandchildren, Hans Waters and his wife Kaye of Thompson Station, Tennessee; Heidi Waters of Norcross, Georgia; 2 great grandchildren, Alena and Dante Waters of Thompson Station, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Danny Waters, and his parents. He was the last surviving child of nine, being the baby of the family.
Mr. Waters graduated from Arthur High School where he lettered in basketball, football, and track. He worked at Progress Industries in Arthur for 34 years where he was a welder and later a foreman of the hose reel department and test house. He was a member of the 25+ Club. Other memberships include a life member of the Mattoon VFW Post; 50-year member of the Arthur American Legion Post #479 where he served as past legion commander and district commander; Mattoon Moose and Eagles Club; and 40 and 8 Club. He was a 50-year member of the Arthur United Methodist Church where he had served as Sunday School superintendent.
He was a former Little League coach, a former IHSA basketball official, and served as a volunteer fireman for the Arthur Fire Department.
Mr. Waters was an army veteran of World War II, having served in the Aleutian Islands (Attu, Shimya, and Amchitka).

Iola Adams
HAVANA - Iola Sarver Adams, 80, of Havana, Ill., formerly of Charleston, died at 1:13 a.m. Sunday (July 15, 2001) in the Mason County District Hospital.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hurley Funeral Home in Havana. Burial will be in Havana Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She was born July 22, 1920, in Herrick, the daughter of Albert S. and Hazel Musser Sarver Kirkendoll, and the stepdaughter of Charles C. Kirkendoll. She married Marvin Adams in 1945; he died in 1996.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Adams of Havana; one stepbrother, Ken Kirkendoll of Charleston; three stepsisters, Mary, Lavonne and Maxine, all of southern Illinois; and one grandchild.
Mrs. Adams owned and operated Discount Sales Matanza Beach. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

Waneta Catey
GREENUP - Waneta Sedgwick Catey, 88, of Greenup, died at 9:45 a.m. Monday (July 16, 2001) at the Cumberland Nursing Center in Greenup.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Bishop Funeral Home, Greenup, with the Rev. Tim Pearce officiating. Burial will be in the Greenup Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
She was born Jan. 16, 1913, in Greenup, the daughter of Ernest and Mildred Brown Sedgwick. She married William H. Catey in 1939; he died in 1995.
Surviving is one sister, Marjorie Wylde of Greenup.
She was also preceded in death by one brother.
Mrs. Catey had taught school in rural areas and later at the University of Washington at Bellingham, Illinois State University at Normal and Casey-Westfield, retiring in 1979. She was a member of the P. Lamda Theta, Delta Kappa Gamma, Beta Sigma Phi, IEA and NEA. She was also a member of the Liberty Hill Home Extension, and the Historical and Genealogical Society.

Joe Cutright
CASEY - Joe Lewis Cutright, 85, of Casey, died at 11:07 a.m. Sunday (July 15, 2001) at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Bishop Funeral Home, Greenup, with the Rev. Marvin Oakley officiating. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, rural Greenup, with full military rites conducted by the Cumberland County Veterans. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with Masonic rites at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was born April 15, 1916, in Cumberland County, the son of Lewis Wesley and Ida Mae Brownfield Cutright. He married Irene M. Kemper in 1945; she died in 1992. He married Willa Mae "Peg" Shook in 1996; she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Phil Cutright of Hazel Dell and Jim Cutright of Sheboygan, Wis.; two daughters, Patricia Judson and Becky Rue, both of Greenup; one stepson, Paul Shook of Charleston; one stepdaughter, Judy Ayers of Phoenix; three sisters, Norma Kemper and Betty Higgs, both of Greenup, and Nina Nanforth of Anderson, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
Mr. Cutright was a World War II Army veteran and a retired steam fitter for Local Union 149. He was a member of the Casey Masonic Lodge 442 and the Greenup VFW 4598.

Alfred Morgan
MATTOON - Alfred B. Morgan, 91, of Mattoon, died at 5:25 a.m. Monday (July 16, 2001) at the Mattoon Health Care Center.
A private family graveside memorial service will be conducted at Long Point Cemetery, east of Neoga, at a later date. The Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was born Sept. 10, 1909, in Cumberland County, the son of Jessie and Emma Blair Morgan. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace. He married Alma Carpenter O'Dell in 1975; she died in 1995.
Surviving are four stepsons, Joseph, George, Howard and Chuck O'Dell, all of Mattoon; two sisters, Edith Curtis of Mattoon and Freda Gardner of Cincinnati; Jimmy Hawkins of Mattoon, who was raised by Mr. Morgan; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one sister.
Mr. Morgan had worked as a mechanic and served as a lay minister for several nursing homes in the Coles County area.

Robert E. Morrison
SIGEL, Ill. - Robert E. Morrison, 80, of rural Sigel, Illinois, passed away at 7:45 a.m. Monday (July 16, 2001) at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital. Effingham, Ill.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday (July 18, 2001) at the Grace United Methodist Church, in Neoga, Ill., with the Rev. Lana J. Robyne of Windsor, Ill., officiating. Burial will be in Coon's Cemetery in Shelby County, Ill. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, in Neoga, and one hour before the service Wednesday at the Church.
He was born Aug. 25, 1920 in Pana, Ill., a son of William A. and Stella (Pierpont) Morrison. He married Betty June Fried on August 21, 1943 in Assumption, Ill. She preceded him in death on February 3, 1995.
Survivors include a son, Garry Morrison and wife Mary of rural Sigel, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Karen Skatoff of Reston, Virginia; one sister, Mrs. Bill (Helen) Valentine of Panama City, Fla.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
Mr. Morrison was a retired farmer and also a D.H.I.A. milk tester, for 28 years, Effingham County, Ill. He attended the Grace United Methodist Church of Neoga, Ill. and the Shelby County Farm Bureau.

Marjorie Randolph
MATTOON - Marjorie G. Randolph, 98, of Mattoon died at 2:44 a.m. Sunday (July 15, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Dr. Mark Prevo officiating. Burial will be in Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
She was born Oct. 7, 1902, in Viroqua, Wis., the daughter of Herbert and Mina Ann Hockenberry Nale. She married Clifford F. Randolph in 1953. He died in 1979.
Surviving are two sons, Harley R. Oakley of Mattoon and Charles F. "Chuck" Oakley of Rock Island; one brother, Bernard Nale of Mattoon; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Hazel Crosby of Mattoon.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter and one sister.
Mrs. Randolph was a life member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 312, Eagles Lodge, and Mattoon Senior Citizens. She attended Hopewell Baptist Church in Johnstown.
CARL RHOADES
CHARLESTON, IL - Carl Rhoades, age 66 of Charleston, passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2001 at his home. Visitation for Carl will be this evening (Tuesday) from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive. Graveside services, with Military Rites, celebrating his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston with Reverend Jack Turner officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey Post 1592 of Charleston.
Carl was born June 6, 1935 in Sardinia, Ohio the son of Orval and Viola (Rickey) Rhoades. He married Carol McKenzie in Sardinia on January 22, 1955.
Carl is survived by his loving wife Carol of Charleston; two daughters, Roxanne Steeples and her husband Larry of Sardinia and Cherie Huddlestun and her husband Matt of Charleston; five grandchildren, Christopher Hunter and his wife Carolyn of Williamsburg, Ohio, Carl Jamison "Jamie" Hunter and his wife Robin of Mt. Orab, Ohio, Kevin Hunter and his wife Julie of Williamstown, Kentucky and Jared Tanner and Jada Huddlestun, both of Charleston; five great-grandchildren; his mother, Viola Rhoades of Sardinia; and his dog, Carly. He was preceded by his father and one sister, Connie Wells.
Carl was a member of the Sardinia Church of Christ, the Kansas, Illinois American Legion, Ohio Valley Military Society and Charleston Moose Lodge #1388. Delivering Trailmobile manufactured truck trailers brought Carl and his family to this area. Earlier he had delivered for the Danbury Company and more recently with Rex "n" Don Van Lines of Charleston. He was a collector of military memorabilia, enjoyed listening to music and playing his guitar. He held special feelings for animals of all kinds. He was a Military Veteran having served with the United States Army from 1959-1961. He will be remembered by Carol, a long-time real estate agent in Charleston, his children and grandchildren as a kind and loving person whose best times were with his family.
