MATTOON - Irene Kuiper, 94, of Mattoon, died Friday morning (Aug. 10, 2001) at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home.
The funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Kuiper Funeral Chapel in Highland Park, Ind., with the Rev. Jeff Newton officiating. Burial will be in Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, Ind. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.
She was born Aug. 18, 1906, in Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Blanche Pletta Vander Linden. She married Sidney Kuiper in 1926; he died in 1975.
Survivors include one son, Bob Kuiper of Lowell, Ind.; three daughters, Alice DeYot of Apopka, Fla., Virginia Smith Maloney of Mattoon and Patricia DiPaola of Black Jack, Mo.; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one son.
Mrs. Kuiper was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mattoon.
Mary Zellers
MARTINSVILLE - Mary Letha Zellers, 89, of Martinsville, died at 1 a.m. Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at the Burnside Nursing Home in Marshall.
The funeral for both Mary and Verle Zellers will be 11 a.m. today at the Greenwell Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev. David Clark officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville. Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
She was born Oct. 5, 1911, in Clark County, the daughter of Everett and Clara (Frances) Baird. She married Verle Zellers in 1929; he died Aug. 7, 2001.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Zellers of Martinsville; one daughter, Betty Wallace of Winter Garden, Fla.; one sister, Beulah Millis of Martinsville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, four sisters and one great-grandchild.
Mrs. Zellers was a farm wife.

Josephine C. Howard
MATTOON - Josephine C. Howard, age 78, of Mattoon, passed away at her residence on Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at 3:10 p.m.
Graveside services for family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2001 at the Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston, Illinois with Rev. Joe Diener officiating. There will be no visitation.
Mrs. Howard was born February 10, 1923, to Roy B. and Mabel (Stevens) Miller. She married Robert L. Howard on January 18, 1947. He preceded her in death on June 8, 2000.
Josephine is survived by her children, Sharon Ray and husband Michael of Mattoon, Sandy Finney of Charleston, Jack Howard and wife Rose of Pekin and Bobby Howard and wife Donna of Mattoon; one brother, Jack Miller of Peoria; and one sister, Irma Evans of Mattoon, survive her. She leaves 10 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Her parents and 3 brothers preceded her in death.
The family would like to give special thanks to Susan Shoot and all of the Lincoln Land Nurses, to Janice Carpenter and all of the hospice nurses, to Pastor Joe Diener, and to Greg Jerdan of the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home.
Rather than flowers the family would like memorial donations made to Lincoln Land Hospice.
Roscoe Hudson
SULLIVAN - Roscoe J. Hudson, 70, of Sullivan, died at 11:54 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2001) at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan. Burial will be in the Moultrie County Memorial Park near Bethany. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born April 18, 1931, in Trenton, Tenn., a son of Albert N. and Iba Love Watson Hudson. He married Georgia Webb in 1949; she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Ron Hudson of Decatur; one daughter, Beverly Burgett of Dalton City; four brothers, Wallace of Paris, Tenn., Jim and Jerry, both of Blytheville, Ark., and Cletus of Mt. Home, Ark.; one sister, Bonnie Kamler of Scott City, Mo.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
Mr. Hudson retired as a construction worker and laborer foreman. He was a member of the Armorel Baptist Church in Armorel, Ark., and the International Brotherhood Labors of America Local 703.
Memorials may be made to the Moultrie County Chapter of the American Heart Association.
Verle Zellers
MARTINSVILLE - Verle Zellers, 93, of Martinsville, died at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) in the Burnside Nursing Home, Martinsville.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. today at Greenwell Funeral Home, Martinsville. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville.
He was born Dec. 25, 1907, in rural Annapolis, the son of Edward and Mertie (Bishop) Zellers. He married Mary Letha Baird in 1929; she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Jerry Zellers of Martinsville; one daughter, Betty Wallace of Winter Garden, Fla.; one sister, Mary Wyman of Robinson; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, four sisters and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Zellers was a retired farmer.

Anita Blackwell
COWDEN - Anita Dawn Blackwell, 25, of Cowden, died at 12:23 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) in Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m today at the Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Moore's Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Ark. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Park, Jacksonville, Ark. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Jacksonville, Ark.
She was born Oct. 2, 1975, in Jacksonville, Ark., the daughter of David R. and Katherine Hicks Jones. She married Jeremy Glenn Blackwell in 1993; he survives.
Other survivors include her parents of Cabot, Ark.; two daughters, Ashli Renee Blackwell and Brittany Marie Blackwell, both at home; one brother, Michael Jones of Grand Forks, N.D.; and one sister, Carolyn Volz of North Little Rock, Ark.
Mrs. Blackwell worked at Fedders Corporation in Effingham. She was a member of the Boilermakers Union1058 of Effingham.

Jerry Brown
NEOGA, IL - Jerry L. Brown, 65, of rural Neoga, formerly of Champaign, died at 1:45 p.m. Monday, August 6, 2001, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County, IL.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, IL, with the Rev. Ron Lake officiating. Burial will be in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 9, 2001, at the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga.
He was born September 27, 1935, in Urbana, IL, a son of Jesse and Lillian (Scott) Brown. He married Norma (Bishop) Schreiber on October 24, 1960, in Danville, IL.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Brown of rural Neoga, IL; stepsons, Craig Sawyer and wife Nancy of Champaign, IL, Stephen Schreiber and wife Christine of St. Paul, Minn.; stepdaughters, Mrs. Larry (Betsy) Burgess of Windsor, IL; mother, Mrs. Lillian Conley of Urbana, IL; sisters, Mrs. Ruby Shepherd of Urbana, IL and Mrs. Edith Farmer of Thomasboro, IL; half brothers, Michael McClain of Tuscola, IL, David Conley of Urbana, IL, Jerome Conley of Rantoul, IL; a half sister, Amber Conley of Urbana, IL; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, one sister, one great-grandson.
Mr. Brown was a truck driver for Champaign Builders Supply and retired from R.C. Distributing Company in Mattoon, IL. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of Teamster's Union Local #26 - Champaign, IL, the Neoga American Legion and Neoga Car Club, both in Neoga, IL.
John Calhoun
BETHANY - John W. "Bud" Calhoun, 66, of Bethany died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday (August 7, 2001) in his residence.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Faith Lutheran Church, Sullivan, with Pastor Paul McGhghy officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan, and at the church one hour before services. Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany with military graveside services conducted by Bethany American Legion Post #507. Memorials are suggested to the Faith Lutheran Church or the Moultrie County Beacon for Justin Parrish.
Bud was born November 15, 1934 in Decatur the son of Orville Eugene and Sylvia Ellen Wilson Calhoun. He had been a conductor for the Wabash and Norfolk and Western Railroads in Decatur, retiring in 1992, was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Sullivan, United Transportation Union # 678, and a U.S. Army veteran. He married Alice V. Campe on March 3, 1954 in Altamont.
Surviving are his wife, Alice of Bethany; sons, Rick Calhoun and his wife Diana of Bethany, Monte Calhoun and his wife Teresa of Decatur; daughters, Teri Parrish of Mattoon, Donna Gerber and her husband Jon of Flower Mound, Texas, Leann Becker and her husband Todd of Divernon; brother, Orville Calhoun of Kankakee; sisters, Harriet Wharton of Altamont Mary Ellen Ross of Calument City, Patsy Thompson of Decatur, Sheila Ann Cole of Metropolis, fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one great-granddaughter.
DAVID HANSON
David Norman Hanson, age 82, of Cottonwood, Arizona,
formerly of Mattoon, passed away August 4, 2001.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted
today, August 9, 2001, at the Mountain View United
Methodist Church in Arizona. Donations in his memory
may be made to the Cottonwood Lions Club, P.O. Box
516, Cottonwood, AZ 86326. All moneys received will
help pay for eyeglasses and examinations for needy
Cottonwood school children who otherwise wouldn't be
able to afford them.
Mr. Hanson is survived by his wife, Marie Hanson of 56
years; a daughter, Joan Hanson Sintov of Arcadia,
California and two grandchildren.
He attended the University of Illinois prior to induction
into the Army in 1941. He was discharged in 1945. Mr.
Hanson retired from a Lumber Company where he was a
house designer and also served as office manager.
While in Illinois, he was a past president of the Mattoon,
Illinois Photographers Club, a past president of the
Association of Commerce, past Master of the Mattoon
Masonic Lodge AF&AM, a past Watchman of Shepherds
of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and a past patron of the
Order of the Eastern Star.
In both Illinois and Arizona, he was an active member of
the Lions Club, which he joined in 1946. He joined the
Cottonwood Lion Club when he and his wife moved to
Arizona in 1985. He was a Life Member and a past
president and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship
Award in 1990. He also served several terms as a director
of the Arizona Lions Eye Bank.
He was a member of the Mountain View United Methodist
Church.
