MATTOON - Augusten Louis "Gus" Lepretre, 72, of
Mattoon, formerly of Lincoln, died at 12:50 p.m. Saturday,
(Aug. 4, 2001) at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Mattoon
Health Care Center with the Lay Pastor Henry Hoskins
officiating. The Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
He was born June 13, 1929, in Roanoke, the son of Emil
and Fernante Lepretre.
Survivors include his many friends at Mattoon Health Care
Center.
Mr. Lepretre was preceded in death by one brother.
James W. (Bud) Singer, Jr.
Mattoon - James W. (Bud) Singer, age 67, of Mattoon,
Illinois passed away at 12:55 p.m. on August 7, 2001 at
Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.
Visitation will be held at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral
Home in Mattoon on Thursday, August 9, from 3 p.m. to
6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate
Conception Church at 7 p.m. on Thursday with Father
Tom Singer, O.M.I officiating. Services will then be held
on Friday in Belleville, Illinois at the Church at the Shrine
of Our Lady of the Snows. Visitation will be from 12-2
p.m. Funeral Mass will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will be
at the Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Belleville.
Mr. Singer was born October 3, 1933, in St. Louis,
Missouri, to James Walter, Sr. and Florence McGee
Singer. He married Patricia Ann Frankovic on October 1,
1955 in Cicero. She survives.
Bud leaves six children, James W. Singer III and his wife
Claire of Hamburg, NY; Mary Singer Huffer and husband
Gary of Denver, CO; Nancy Singer Gies and husband
Michael of Oak Park, IL; T.J. Singer and his wife Donna
of Crystal Beach, FL; Patricia Singer Harstfield and
husband Brian of Wildwood, MO; and Christine Singer
Kasman and husband John of St. Louis, MO. He also
leaves one brother, Father Tom Singer of San Antonio,
TX and Rome Italy; and one sister, Mary Jean Hemann of
Fairview Heights, IL. He leaves 16 grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in
death.
Mr. Singer was associated with the First State Bank of
Morrisonville, Illinois and the Mercantile Trust in St.
Louis before coming to the Central National Bank of
Mattoon where he served as President from 1969 until his
retirement in 1992.
He was founder and organizer of Singer and Associates
and after retiring began Singer Farm, where he bred,
trained and raced thoroughbreds.
Mr. Singer was supportive of the community and active in
economic development in Mattoon in the 1970's and 80's.
He was a former board member of the Mattoon Memorial
Hospital and Mattoon Chamber of Commerce. He was also
formerly a member of the Independent Bankers of Illinois,
The American Bankers Association, Mattoon Golf and
Country Club, Rotary, and Elks.
He is a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and
is a fourth degree knight in the Knights of Columbus. He
was a member of the Alpha Delta Gamma Fraternity at
Loyola University in Chicago.
Mr. Singer served in the United States Army from 1955 to
1957. He was First Lieutenant in the U.S. Infantry.
Bud enjoyed golf, tennis and boating. He was an
equestrian enthusiast and held memberships in the
American Quarter Horse Association and the Illinois
Thoroughbred Association.

RICHARD BRYANT
Richard Edward Bryant, age 85, of Mattoon, formerly of
Inverness, Florida and the Chicago area, passed away at
6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2001, at the Convalescent
Care Center in Mattoon.
Private family memorial services will be held at a later
date.
Richard was born May 24, 1916, in Mattoon, the son of
Edward Bryant and Christina Heath Bryant. He married
Eva Marie Gordon on June 5, 1935, in Mattoon.
Survivors include his wife, Eva M. Bryant of Mattoon; one
grandson, Michael E. Bryant and wife Candi of Warsaw,
Indiana; one granddaughter, Debra Lee Mizialco and
husband Jeff of Mundelein, Illinois; four
great-grandchildren, Jacob Bryant and Rachel Bryant, both
of Warsaw, Indiana and Kylie Mizialco and Emma
Mizialco, both of Mundelein, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Gene Bryant,
and one sister, Laura Buser.
Mr. Bryant was employed at Willett Trucking Company in
Chicago and was a member of the Teamsters Local 705.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving
during the Japanese Occupation in the Parachute Infantry
511. He was a member of the V.F.W. Posts in Chicago,
Florida and Mattoon. Richard loved to fish and enjoyed
the outdoors as well as having company over to their
homes.
John Calhoun
BETHANY - John W. "Bud" Calhoun, 66, of Bethany,
died at 4 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) at his residence.
Arrangements are incomplete at Reed Funeral Home,
Sullivan.
Floy Davis
ARCOLA - Floy E. Davis, 99, of Arcola, IL passed away
at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2001 at Arcola Health Care
Center in Arcola, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday,
August 9, 2001 at the Edwards Funeral Home, 221 E. Main
St., Arcola, IL, Lee Wolf will officiate. Burial will be in
the Arcola Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to
the funeral at the funeral home.
Floy was born September 19, 1901, in rural Arcola, IL.
She was a daughter of George and Lilly O'Bell (Paine)
Wingler. She married Heratio Hackler on July 5, 1924, in
Charleston. She later married Joseph Davis on August 28,
1949 in Wisconsin. He passed away on December 7, 1959.
She is survived by one son, Kenneth Nolan Hackler and
his wife Patricia of Arcola, IL; two sisters, Mabel Rote of
Footville, WI and Alice Hornbeck of Griggsville, IL; five
grandchildren, Rick Hackler, Cheryl Dill and Brian
Hackler, all of Arcola, Sandra Owens and Pam Johnson,
both of Indianapolis, IN; 10 great-grandchildren,
Courtney, Kellie and Joey Hackler, Blake and Carly Dill,
and Caleb and Jared Hackler, all of Arcola, IL, Nicole
Johnson, Lisa and Laura Owens, all of Indianapolis, IN;
two step great-grandchildren, Whitney and Linze Edwards,
both of Indianapolis, IN.
Floy was preceded in death by her parents; one son,
Laverl; two brothers, Delbert Wingler and Elmer Wingler;
one half brother, Lowell Wingler; one step brother,
Raymond Wingler; one sister, Florence Hunter; one half
sister, Lois McCarthy.
Floy was a member of the Kemp Church of Christ since
1923. She was a homemaker and also worked in
restaurants and various other jobs since she was 15 years
old. Floy enjoyed sewing and crocheting.
Memorials may be made to Kemp Church of Christ.
DAVID HANSON
David Norman Hanson, age 82, of Cottonwood, Arizona,
formerly of Mattoon, passed away August 4, 2001.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted
Thursday, August 9, 2001, at the United Methodist Church
in Cottonwood, Arizona. Donations in his memory may be
made to the Cottonwood Lions Club, P.O. Box 516,
Cottonwood, AZ 86326. All moneys received will help pay
for eyeglasses and examinations for needy Cottonwood
school children who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford
them.
Mr. Hanson is survived by his wife, Marie Hanson of 56
years; a daughter, Joan Hanson Sintov of Arcadia,
California and two grandchildren.
He attended the University of Illinois prior to induction
into the Army in 1941. He was discharged in 1945. Mr.
Hanson retired from a Lumber Company where he was a
house designer and also served as office manager.
While in Illinois, he was a past president of the Mattoon,
Illinois Photographers Club, a past president of the
Association of Commerce, past Master of the Mattoon
Masonic Lodge AF&AM, a past Watchman of Shepherds
of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and a past patron of the
Order of the Eastern Star.
In both Illinois and Arizona, he was an active member of
the Lions Club, which he joined in 1946. He joined the
Cottonwood Lion Club when he and his wife moved to
Arizona in 1985. He was a Life Member and a past
president and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship
Award in 1990. He also served several terms as a director
of the Arizona Lions Eye Bank.
He was a member of the Mountain View United Methodist
Church.
Bobby Huddleston
YALE - Bobby D. Huddleston, 71, of Yale, died at 12:45
p.m. Monday (Aug. 6, 2001) at Richland Memorial
Hospital in Olney.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Barkley
Funeral Home in Greenup. Burial will be in Yale Cemetery
with military rites. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at
the funeral home.
He was born Nov. 19, 1929, in Point Pleasant, the son of
Theron and Bertha Worden Huddleston. He married Vera
Jones in 1955; she survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Michael Huddleston of
Yale and Edward Huddleston of Oblong; one daughter,
Connie Loehr of Prattville, Ala.; two sisters, Lola Cox of
Casey and Gladys Newlin of Cheyenne, Wyo.; six
grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three
sisters.
Mr. Huddleston was a retired shop manager for Yale Farm
Equipment and an Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
Evelyn Millsap
ROBINSON - Evelyn L. Millsap, 69, of Robinson,
formerly of Charleston, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday (Aug.
6, 2001) at her home.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Goodwine
Funeral Home in Robinson with Brothers Johnie Adkins
and Joe Griffith officiating. Burial will be in the Robinson
New Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and
until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
She was born Oct. 31, 1931, in Charleston, the daughter of
Clyde Kingery Sr. and Eva Mae Good Kingery. She
married William G. Millsap in 1980; he survives.
Survivors include three daughters, Gloria Beanblossom of
Stanford, Linda Kingery of Mattoon and Brenda
Blessenger of Bicknell; two stepsons, David Millsap of
Danville and Brian Millsap of New York; two brothers,
Clyde Kingery Jr. of rural Robinson and Vic Kingery of
rural Oblong; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren;
two adopted grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Millsap was a homemaker and had served as hostess
at Burger King in Robinson for several years. She was a
member of the Highland Church of Christ.
CAROLYN GOEPFERT ANFINSON
CHARLESTON - Carolyn Goepfert Anfinson, a 61-year
resident of Charleston, died August 2 on a visit in Palos
Hills, Ill. Surviving are her children, Gordon, Alan, and
Carol. A memorial service will be held Monday, August
13 at 11:00 AM at the United Wesley Methodist Church,
Charleston.
Carolyn spent her life giving to others. She was Eastern's
first unofficial foreign student advisor as her husband
Rudy was Dean of Students. She entertained and coached
foreign students in their studies for years. She went to bat
for them when they had academic or financial problems.
For years former students have returned to visit Eastern
and have always stopped in to visit her because of their
appreciation of her kind help. In 1972 she and Rudy
traveled around the world and visited some of their
former students. They were overjoyed at seeing her.
She enjoyed and participated in the arts and was a 57 year
member of Charleston Drama Study Club. She was
concert mistress of Eastern's orchestra for years as she
played first violin. She also taught in the music department
and English department.
Swimming was a passion for her as she was raised on a
lake in S.D. She won many first place medals in the state
senior Olympics. She also won the Skinner prize as the
top Senior athlete in 1997 in the state of Illinois for the
over 80's. Charleston's swimming pool has for years been
host for her daily lap swims. The lifeguards opened the
pool at noon on a rainy day last week and said "Sure Mrs.
Anfinson." Last week a little 5 year old girl at the pool
asked her what she did. She asked the little girl what she
did. The child replied, "I swim to the bottom of the pool."
Carolyn had a remarkable gift of connecting with cats,
dogs and people of all ages.
Thomas S. Young
MONTICELLO - Thomas S. Young, 81, of Monticello
died at 1:30 p.m. Monday (August 6, 2001) at his
residence.
Services will be 10 am. Friday, August 10, 2001 in St.
Philomena Catholic Church, Monticello, with Fr. Greg
Nelson officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday,
August 9, 2001 with a prayer service at 7:45 p.m. at the
Mackey-Wright Funeral Home, Monticello. Burial will be
in Monticello Township Cemetery. Memorials to: St.
Philomena Catholic Church or donors choice.
Mr. Young was born Dec. 27, 1919 at Greencastle, IN.,
son of Thomas C. and Martha Jane Elder Young. He
married the former Mary Kathryn Muell of Cincinnati,
OH., on May 22, 1945, at San Luis Obispo, CA. Mr.
Young served with Naval Intelligence, U. S. Navy, during
World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was a teacher and a
coach at Armstrong High School from 1948 to 1953. He
was a longtime teacher, coach, and administrator at
Monticello High School, retiring in 1982. He was a life
member of the National Education Association, a member
of Piatt County and Illinois Retired Teachers Associations,
a charter inductee of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall
of Fame, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Coach of
the Year, and the Sullivan, IL., High School Alumni Hall
of Fame.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, Thomas E. and wife
Cyd of Sandy, Utah; Terry K. and wife Marilyn of
Monticello; Michael F. and wife Colleen of Bondville; five
sisters, Mary Faye Robinson of Sullivan; Mildred Wickline
of Lincoln, Ruth Garrett of Gays; Wilma Startz of
Romeoville; Betty Murphy of Chestnut; one brother,
Kenneth R. Young of Salt Lake City, Utah; three
grandsons and two granddaughters.
Mr. Young was a member of the St. Philomena Catholic
Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, an
infant daughter, Mary Kathleen, two brothers, and one
sister.
