LOVINGTON - Edward A. Creviston, 80, of Lovington,
died 4:34 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001) in the Arthur Home.

Wayne Deaver
ROBINSON - Wayne P. Deaver, 85, of Robinson, formerly
of Salem, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday (August 3, 2001) at
Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the
Pulliam Funeral Home in Robinson with the Rev. Johnie
Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Robinson New
Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the VFW
Post 4549, the E.M. Coulter American Legion Post 69 and
the AM Vets Post 33, all of Robinson . Visitation will be
from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and before services on
Wednesday at the funeral home.
He was born May 26, 1916, in Robinson, a son of Clyde
and Minnie Jeffries Deaver. He married Mary Elizabeth
Book in 1947. She died in 1982. He later married Mildred
Louise Prosie in 1983. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Howard Hays of Salem and
Rick Hays of Kell; four daughters, Phyllis Moore of
Tuscola, Pat Hadfield of Charleston, Judy Wesner of
Robinson and Marilyn Little of Kell; three brothers, Allen
Deaver of Fort Smith, Ark., Roy Deaver of Las Vegas,
Nev., and Guy Deaver of Oxnard, Calif.; one sister,
Mildred Parrott of Robinson; and 23 grandchildren and 45
great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother,
two sisters, one infant brother and one infant sister.
Mr. Deaver was a employed by Marathon Oil Company
and was a US Army WW II veteran. He was a Church
Elder in the Highland Church of Christ at Robinson and a
member of the AF & AM #250 Robinson Masonic Lodge,
VFW Post 4549 of Robinson and a 50 year member of the
Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Danville.

Chester Hardway
MARTINSVILLE - Chester Hardway, 82, of Martinsville,
died at 6:45 a.m. Sunday (August 5, 2001) at Heartland
Manor Nursing Home in Casey.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the
Greenwell Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev.
Tom Marsh officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
at the funeral home.
He was born March 19, 1919, in Martinsville Township,
the son of Lee and Ethel Carper Hardway. He married
Eileen Dickey in 1948. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Anita Wankel of Tallula
and Deena Burris of Waukee, Iowa; one brother, Kenneth
Hardway of Martinsville; four sisters, Leona Hills, Mary
Guinn, Gwen Hammond and Sharon Daughhetee, all of
Martinsville; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Mr. Hardway was a retired auto mechanic and a US Army
veteran of WW II. He attended the Casey First Baptist
Church and was a member of the American Legion Post
515.

Lela McNeel
Lela McNeel, age 91, of Greenup passed away Saturday,
August 4, 2001 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Anthony Memorial
Hospital, Effingham, Illinois.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., at the
Barkley Funeral Home, Greenup. Burial will be in the Bell
Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday.
She was born May 17, 1910, the daughter of Lewis and
Elda Grissom Cougill. She married Stanley McNeel in
1933. He died in 1960.
Surviving are two daughters, Janice Ray of Greenup and
Wanda Brown and her husband Jack Brown of
Martinsville; four grandchildren, Troy Ray of Greenup
and Chris and his wife Sarah Ray of Toledo; Doit and his
wife Donna Brown of Newburgh, Indiana, Lynn and her
husband Michael Johnson of Indianapolis, Indiana; five
great-grandchildren, Elijah, Ethan, and Owen Ray, Kyle
and Mandi Brown; one brother Max and his wife Mary
Cougill of Charleston; one niece Julie Myers of Lima,
Ohio and her family; and one nephew Jeff Cougill of
Riverside, California and his family. Jack Hollensbe, a
longtime friend of Hazel Dell. Extended family: Bill Davis
and wife Martha of Mattoon and his family, a cousin
whom she and Stanley raised after his parents died. Yong
and John Cowger and boys Steve, Michael and Jordan.
Lela was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, one
son Lowell, her parents, one brother Oliver and a
granddaughter Tammy Ray.
She was a homemaker and a charter member of the
Cumberland County Democrat Club.

Alice Pease
DECATUR - Alice Pease, 85, of Decatur, died at 7:50 a.m.
Saturday (August 4, 2001) at her residence.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the
Illini Cemetery. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m.
Tuesday at the Westminister Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the J.J.
Moran & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur.
She was born Sept. 28, 1915, in Trilla, the daughter of
Robert B. and Lena Creviston Rhodes. She married
William Handy Ennis Pease in 1938. He survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Alice Bernice Doty of
Mt. Zion, Phyllis Morris of Decatur, Janet Arnold of
Chandler, N.C., and Ruth Ann Jackson of Findley; one
brother, Robert D. Rhodes of Billings, Mont.; one sister,
Eloise Barger Hamby of Mattoon; and four grandchildren,
one great-grandchild, 10 step-grandchildren and 14
step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son.
Mrs. Pease was a member of the Westminster
Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder and First
Woman Trustee.

ANNABELLE SMITH
AnnaBelle Smith, age 73, of Mattoon, passed away at
11:45 p.m. Thursday, August 2, 2001, at her residence.
Memorial services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the
Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Jerry Jones
officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Dodge
Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from Noon until
service time on Tuesday afternoon at the funeral home.
AnnaBelle was born November 1, 1927, in Springbrook,
Wisc., the daughter of Ernest and Caroline Gollnick
Baumgart. She married Mark K. Smith Jr. in 1946. He
survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Steven R. Smith of
Dayton, Ohio, Charles M. Smith of Mattoon and Robert
W. Smith of Olympia, Wash.; one daughter, Debra A.
Craig of Peoria; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

James Veach
MARTINSVILLE - James Veach, 39, of Martinsville, died
Saturday (August 4, 2001) at Union Hospital in Terre
Haute, Ind.
Arrangements are pending at Greenwell Funeral Home in
Martinsville.
He was born July 2, 1962, in Paris, the son of Ernest and
Barbara VanHouten Veach. He married Marie Piehl in
1993. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Meranda Twigg of
Toledo; his parents, Ernest and Barbara Veach of
Martinsville; three brothers, David and Jeff Veach, both of
Martinsville and Eric Veach of Marshall; grandmother,
Evelyn VanHouten of Martinsville and great-grandmother,
Leah Dill Reed of Casey.
Mr. Veach was employed by Heartland Pork Company
and attended the Martinsville First Baptist Church.
Winifred Cowart
CHARLESTON - Winifred "Winnie" Pauline Cowart, 80,
of Charleston, died at 9 p.m. Saturday (July 28, 2001) at
Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Cougill
Apartments in Charleston. Edwards Funeral Home in
Arcola is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born Aug. 3, 1920, in Niles, Mich., the daughter
of Edward T. and Kathryn Schuman Cowart.
Surviving is one half brother, John Cowart of Ventura,
Calif.
She was preceded in death by one half sister.
Miss Cowart was a member of the United Pentecostal
Tabernacle in Charleston.

Jean R. Hutchison
CHARLESTON, IL - Jean R. Hutchison, age 81 of
Charleston, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2001 at
Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Visitation will be held
Sunday afternoon, August 5 (2001) from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
with services to follow at 3:30 p.m. Reverend Bill Boaz
and Reverend Max White will officiate. Visitation and
services will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330
Shawnee Drive. Interment, with Military Rites conducted
by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul
McVey Post 1592, will follow the services at Roselawn
Cemetery in Charleston.
Jean was born January 20, 1920 in Charleston, Illinois the
son of Cleo E. and Velma Odessa (Patton) Hutchison. He
married Clara Prunkard in Newark, New Jersey on August
23, 1942.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife Clara of
Charleston; one son, Michael Allen Hutchison and his wife
Patricia of DeWitt, Iowa; four grandchildren, Mark
Hutchison and his wife Piedad of Lombard, Illinois, Kama
R. Beeler of Humboldt, Illinois and Andrew Hutchison
and his wife Kim and Joseph Hutchison, all of Mattoon,
Illinois; four great grandchildren and one, sister, Esther
Prunkard of Danville, Illinois. He was preceded by his
parents; a son, Stanley Robert Hutchison who was killed
in South Vietnam on December 22, 1967 while serving
with the United States Army; four brothers, Robert L.
Hutchison, Marquis A. Hutchison, Sherman P. Hutchison
and William W. Hutchison; and, one great grandchild.
Jean was a member of the First Christian Church in
Charleston, American Legion Post #88 of Mattoon,
National Association of Retired Veteran Railroad
Employees, United Transportation Union and Charleston
Moose Lodge #1388. He served with the United States
Army Air Corp during World War II. Prior to entering the
service, he cooked for the Forest Rangers in the Civilian
Conservation Corp in Wisconsin. He was a Railroad
Brakeman and Conductor for thirty-one years, beginning
his career with the Nickel Plate Road and later with
Norfolk & Western Railroad following its acquisition of
the Nickel Plate. His interest in railroading led him to
pursue the hobby of collecting railroad memorabilia. He
also enjoyed cooking, fishing, squirrel hunting and raising
vegetables and sharing them with others. Jean's love for
Clara, his children and their families and the love, respect
and admiration they generously returned earned him the
deserving title of family patriarch.
Jean's family requests that memorials in his honor be

Ronald L. Saatkamp
Charleston - Ronald L. Saatkamp, 52, of Charleston,
passed away at 8:20 a.m. Friday, August 3, 2001 at the
Sarah Bush Health Center, Mattoon.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday,
August 6, 2001 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home with
Evangelist Gene Taylor officiating. Interment will follow
in Kickapoo Cemetery, rural Charleston. Visitation will be
Sunday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ronald was born March 24, 1949 at Charleston, son of Joe
and Marilyn Price Saatkamp. Survivors include a special
friend, Ruby Simmons of Charleston; father, Joe
Saatkamp of Nokomis; brothers: Roy Saatkamp and wife
Karen of Galva, IL, and Tom Saatkamp and wife Becky of
Pana. One sister: Phyllis Allen and husband Steve of
Nokomis. A niece: Andrea Saatkamp, and one nephew:
Adam Saatkamp both of Galva, as well as Ruby's children,
Franklin W. Simmons, Christina Simmons, and Mary
Craig, all of Mattoon; and her grandchildren, Tabitha and
Kristina Craig, both of Mattoon, also survive. He was
preceded in death by his mother and grandparents.
Ronald was a member of First Baptist Church in Nokomis.
