ATWOOD - Nora May Quick, 82, of Atwood, died at 5:50
a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2001) at the Arthur Home, Arthur.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Fork
United Church of Christ, rural Atwood, with the Rev.
Conrad Heisner officiating. Burial will be in Lake Fork
Cemetery, rural Atwood. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m.
Saturday at the church. The Hilligoss Shrader Funeral
Home, Atwood, is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born March 18, 1919, in DeWitt County, the
daughter of Ross and Nola O'Daffer Houston. She married
Maurice R. Quick in 1947; he died in 1996.
Survivors include one son, Duane Quick of Atwood; three
daughters, Janet Hughes of Tuscola, Marlene Zyskowski
of Tuscola and Karen Miller of Arthur; one sister, Eileen
Fletcher of Forsyth; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister.
Mrs. Quick was a homemaker and licensed beautician.
She was a member of the Lake Fork United Church of
Christ, rural Atwood.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart
Association.
Olive Sacco
GREENUP - Olive J. Sacco, 79, of Greenup, died at 10:50
a.m. Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Cumberland Nursing
Center.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Barkley
Funeral Home in Greenup with the Rev. Tim Pearce
officiating. Burial will be in the Greenup Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on
Wednesday at the funeral home.
She was born July 19, 1922, in Timothy, the daughter of
Roy and Lilly Simpson Carver. She married John Hayden
in 1937; her preceded her in death. She married Farrell
Sacco in 1954; he died in 1965.
Survivors include one son, Bill Hayden of Greenup;
longtime companion Bill Buckler of Greenup; one sister,
Betty Knifley of Toledo; two grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers and one
sister.
Mrs. Sacco was a homemaker.
Richard Scribner
ARTHUR - Richard Eugene Scribner, 69, of Arthur, died
at 2:18 p.m. Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at Sarah Bush
Lincoln Health Center.

JOSEPH W. BERGER
CHARLESTON - Joseph William Berger, age 83 and
former Agriculture Teacher at Charleston High School,
passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2001 at Sarah Bush
Lincoln Health Center. Memorial Services celebrating his
life will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 1
(2001) at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive in
Charleston. Reverend Dale Beck will officiate. The family
will receive guests at Adams Funeral Chapel for one hour
prior to the service beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Joe was born March 18, 1918 in Ford County (near
Elliott), Illinois the first of three children to Joseph P. and
Agnes (Punke) Berger. He married Ellen Bethel in Clinton,
Illinois on June 17, 1945.
Survivors include Ellen, his loving and devoted wife of
fifty-six years; one son, Dr. Gary Berger and his wife Ann
(Stark) of Port Charlotte, Florida; one daughter, Susan
Lafferty and her husband Stephen of Freeport, Illinois:
five grandchildren, Christopher Berger, John Berger and
Daniel Berger, all of Port Charlotte and Megan Lafferty
and Bennett Lafferty, both of Freeport; and one sister,
Dorothea Kain of Rantoul, Illinois. He was preceded by
his parents and one brother, Paul Berger who resided in
Paxton, Illinois.
Joe was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church
in Charleston, Charleston Elks B.P.O.E. #623 and the
Charleston Kiwanis Club, an organization that recently
recognized him for his forty-years of perfect attendance.
Many will remember him as their Agriculture Teacher at
Charleston High School, a position he held and truly
enjoyed for thirty-five years. His love for agriculture
earned him leadership roles in the Future Farmers of
America, the Illinois Association of Vocational Agriculture
Teachers (IAVAT) and National Association of Vocational
Agriculture Teachers (NAVAT). He was a past
Secretary-Treasurer of IAVAT. Joe earned his Bachelor's
Degree in Agriculture in 1941, his Master's Degree in
Education in 1946 and his Advanced Certificate in
Education in 1969, all from the University of Illinois in
Urbana. He was a World War II Veteran having served as
a Civilian Instructor with the United States Air Force. His
hobbies included gardening, reading and traveling.
In lieu of flowers, Joe's family requests that memorials in
his honor be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church
or the Charleston Kiwanis Club. Memorials may be made
at the Visitation or Services or mailed to Adams Funeral
Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
Robert Bragg
SULLIVAN - Robert Earl Bragg, 79, of Sullivan, died at
10 a.m. Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) in Sullivan Health Care.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the
McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan. Burial will be
in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan, with military rites.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral
home.
He was born Aug. 5, 1922, in Moultrie County, the son of
O.B. and Gladys Gilbreath Bragg. He married Ida May
West in 1947; she survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Sue Ann Renner
of Pekin, Nina Louise McGuire of North Platte, Neb., and
Teresa Carol Esterholdt of Ontario, Ore.; two brothers,
Don and Duane Bragg of Sullivan; two sisters, Ellen Jane
Ledbetter of Sullivan and Ruth Alice Stone of Casey; eight
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bragg was a retired farmer and U.S. government soil
conservation technician. He was an Army veteran of
World War II and a member of the First United Methodist
Church, American Legion Post 68 and the Sullivan Farm
Bureau, all in Sullivan.

Lois Lane
SULLIVAN - Lois Lane, 92, of Sullivan, died at 9:05 a.m.
Monday (August 20, 2001) in Eastview Terrace Nursing
Home, Sullivan.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in the
Sullivan First Church of God with Pastor Tom Farris
officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Reed
Funeral Home, Sullivan and at the church one hour before
services. Burial will be in Keller Cemetery, Lovington.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Lois was born September 9, 1908, in Allen County,
Kentucky the daughter of Hatton K. and Mary Ivy Bridges
Linville. She was a homemaker and a member of the
Sullivan First Church of God. She married James Delbert
Lane on September 19, 1926, in Allen County, Kentucky
and he preceded her in death on April 19, 1986.
She leaves four sons, Roger D. Lane and his wife Esther
Louise of Allenville, Willie J. Lane of Lovington, Aubrey
K. Lane and his wife Betty of Mount Zion, Jay H. Lane
and his wife Lovina of Lovington; one daughter, Carolyn
and her husband Oliver H. Walker Jr. of Sullivan; sixteen
grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren and
twenty-one great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, three
sisters and one brother.
Marie Martin
OAKLAND - Marie F. Martin, 77, of Oakland, formerly of
Newton, died at 4:26 a.m. Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at her
home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Joines
Funeral Home, Newman, with the Rev. Ed Barnes
officiating. Burial will be in Newman Cemetery. Visitation
will be two hours prior to the service.
She was born Jan. 24, 1924, in California, Penn., the
daughter of Willard and Sadie Gammie Hickey. She
married Irvin Toppe and later married Harold Martin; he
survives.
Other survivors include one son, Michael Toppe of
Naples, Fla.; one daughter, Renee Comer of Oakland; five
grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Mrs. Martin and her daughter, Renee, owned and operated
Top of the Inn fashions in Oakland for 13 years, retiring
in 1999, and had been an LPN at the Danville Veterans
Hospital. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern
Star.

RAYMOND WHITE
Raymond Earl White, of Mattoon, went to live with Jesus
at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, August 20, 2001, at the V.A.
Illiana Health Care System in Danville.
Graveside services with military rites by V.F.W. Post 4325
celebrating his life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday
August 22 at the Dodge Grove Cemetery with Victoria and
James Uhl officiating. The Schilling Funeral Home is in
charge or arrangements.
Raymond was born July 27, in Mattoon, a son of Leslie
and Myrtle Duty White. He married Claudine Reva Miller
on Sept. 1, 1940 in Charleston. She went to live with Jesus
in 1997.
Survivors include one son, Jerry Lee White and wife Pat
of Mattoon; three daughters, Marcia White of Mattoon,
Patricia Leathers of Flora, Victoria Uhl and husband James
of Mattoon; two granddaughters, Reva Nale and husband
Timothy of Neoga and Emily White of Decatur and three
great-grandchildren.
Mr. White was a World War II Air Force veteran. He was
retired from Dale Miller's Farm Service.

Betty Hanners
MATTOON - Betty L. Hanners, 75, of Mattoon, formerly of Neoga,
died at 4:46 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 13, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln
Health Center.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Block (Mt. Zion)
Cemetery, near Greenup, with the Rev. Ron Lake officiating. No
visitation will be conducted. The Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga,
is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born March 5, 1926, in Johnson County, the daughter of C.
Harry and Eunice Whittenberg Simpson. She married Clyde L. Hanners
in 1948; he died in 1984.
Survivors include five daughters, Jean Tutwiler of Buford, Ga., Judy
White and Donna Lawrence, both of Neoga, Karen Clark of Greeley,
Colo., and Susan Abraham of Altamont; one brother, William Simpson
of Grayslake; two sisters, Fern Rauch of Spokane, Wash., and Eunice
Pope of Lake City, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Hanners was a housewife and member of the First Christian
Church of Neoga.
