MARTINSVILLE - Vinton C. Reed, 99, of Martinsville, died at 5:30
a.m. Thursday (Sept. 13, 2001) at his home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Greenwell Funeral Home,
Martinsville, with the Rev. David Wilson officiating. Burial will be in
Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sunday at the funeral home.
He was born May 14, 1902, in Clark County, the son of Cyrus W. and
Fairy Bennett Reed. He married Inez Thornburgh in 1923; she died in
1999.
Survivors include one daughter, Coral Washburn of Martinsville; two
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Mr. Reed was a retired farmer and insurance agent for the Indianapolis
Life Insurance Co. He was a member of the Martinsville Bible Church,
Clark Lodge 603 AF and AM, and the Scottish Rite of Danville.
Edna Lois Ballinger
MATTOON - Edna Lois Ballinger, 76, of Mattoon, passed away at
8:55 a.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln
Health Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 14,
2001 at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Reverend Frank
Marshall officiating. Interment will follow in Dodge Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral
home.
Edna was born November 12, 1924, in Toledo, daughter of James and
Thursa Oakley McClain. She married Junior Ballinger, July 26, 1944 at
Neoga, he died January 22, 1990. Survivors include two sons: Wayne
Ballinger of Neoga and Rex Ballinger of Mattoon; three daughters: Mrs.
Barbara (George) Shutts of Mattoon, Connie Ballinger of Mattoon, Mrs.
Patsy (Walt) Crabtree of Arthur. One sister, Mrs. Loretta Young of
Neoga. Six grandchildren: Troy and Theresa Ballinger both of Windsor;
Denise Butler and Pam Shutts both of Mattoon; Beth Key of Arthur
and Nicole Crabtree of Atwood. Great-grandchildren: Christopher
Crabtree of Atwood, Brennan of Atwood also survive. She was
preceded by her mother, father, husband, one brother, one sister and a
daughter-in-law: Vera.
Edna worked at Kern Manufacturing and the Mattoon Garment Factory
before retiring. She enjoyed sewing and quilting as hobbies. She also
enjoyed going to church at the First Southern Baptist Church. She was a
former member of the Mattoon Eagles Lodge. She cherished the time
she got to spend with her children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Oris Carl Grissom
PEORIA - Oris Carl Grissom, age 83, of Peoria, Illinois, formerly of
Greenup and Decatur, Illinois passed away at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday,
September 12, 2001 at the Rose Garden Care Center in Peoria Heights,
Illinois.
Funeral services celebrating Oris life will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday,
September 15, 2001 at the Bishop Funeral Home in Greenup, Illinois
with Rev. Wesley N. Wuesch, Rev. Eugene C. Holder and Rev. Huey
Long officiating. Burial will be in the Harmony Cemetery in Rural
Greenup, Illinois. Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at the Bishop
Funeral Home in Greenup, Illinois.
Mr. Grissom was born in Rural Greenup, Illinois on April 23, 1918 a
son of Oris T. and Zetta M. (Tipsword) Grissom. He married Frances
Alene Decker, she passed away in 1979. He later married Marcella P.
Sowers on February 15, 1992, she survives.
Oris was a farmer and had previously worked for the State of Illinois
Highway Department. He was a member of the Jack Oak Church of
God in Rural Greenup and a past member of the Masonic Lodge in
Maroa, Illinois. Oris attended the UPC in N. Pekin, Illinois.
Oris is survived by his loving wife Marcella; one son, Everett C.
(Margaret) Grissom of Maroa, IL; three daughters, Lela M. Mettenbrink
of Peoria, IL, Letha M. (Rev. Wesley N.) Wuerch of Hawkins, TX and
Viola K. (Rev. Eugene C.) Holder of Waxahachie, TX; two brothers,
Elwood (Evelyn) Grissom of Greenup, IL and Fred (Phyllis) Grissom of
Lake Paradise, IL; four sisters, Beulah Vaughn, Mary (Walter) McDade
both of Charleston, IL, Irene Floyd of Casey, IL and Jennie Lee (Neal)
Terrell of New Orleans, LA; 10 grandchildren, Robin (Randy) Thacker
of Decatur, IL, Angela (Rick) Brown of Blue Mound, IL, Dayna (Chris)
Darling of Shady Shore, TX, Allen (Terri Lynn) Campbell, Sherlyn
(Randy) Hall, both of Lake Mattoon, IL, Kristina (Sean) Weeks of
Garland, TX, Kenneth Wuerch of Hawkins, TX, Katherine (Jarred)
Stover, Letha (Cameron) Bishop and David (Christina) Holder, all of
Waxahochie, TX; 25 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson and
several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances Alene Decker;
one daughter, Velma Grissom; one brother, Donnie Ingram and one
grandson, Stephen L. Campbell.
Donald Maulding
GREENUP - Donald W. Maulding, 82, of Greenup died at 3:40 p.m.
Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at his residence.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bishop Funeral Home in
Greenup with the Rev. Jere McSparran officiating. Burial will be in
Cumberland-Casey Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at
the Bishop Funeral Home in Greenup.
He was born Jan. 14, 1919, in Newman, a son of Robert L. and Noma
(Talley) Maulding. He married Dorothy Estes; she died in 1979. He
married Hazel Devall in 1981; she died in 1994. He married Lora M.
Byers in 1995; she survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Don, Dan and Dick Maulding all of
Casey; one daughter, Denise M. Maulding of Charleston; three
stepsons, Richard Marrs of Silver Springs, Nev. Robert Marrs of
Libertyville and Ronald Marrs of Crystal Lake; one sister, Gusta Harris
of Oblong; nine grandchildren; seven step grandchildren five
great-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren.
Mr. Maulding was a farmer and construction worker. He was a member
of the Casey Masonic Lodge 442 and attended the Plum Grove Church
in Rural Greenup.
Memorials may be made to the Plum Grove Church.
Carl Oliver
CHARLESTON - Carl Oliver, 84, of Charleston died at 8:21 a.m.
Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at his residence.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Caudill-King Funeral Home
with the Rev. Robert Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh
Cemetery, Lerna. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the
funeral home.
He was born July 1, 1917, in Pittsfield, a son of Clarence and Marie
Creech Oliver. He married Dorothy Walden in 1938; she survives.
Other survivors include one son, Bill Oliver of Charleston; a daughter,
Carla Vaughn of San Antonio, Texas; five brothers, Wayne and Russell
Oliver both of Blandinsville, Lyle Oliver of Cantrall, Raymond Oliver of
Macomb, Richard Oliver of Gentry, Ark.; two sisters, Christine Agans
of Rushville and Kathleen Barry of Good Hope; four grandchildren; two
step-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, two brothers, two sisters, one
grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Oliver was a navy veteran and a retired truck driver for Ne-Co
Asphalt of Charleston. He was a member of the Charleston VFW Post
1592.
Helen Chaplin
MATTOON - Helen Chaplin, age 89, of Greenville,
North Carolina, formerly of Mattoon, passed away at
10:50 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001 at Greenville.
Mary Helen Chaplin was born May 21, 1912 at Ash
Grove, Shelby County, Illinois, a daughter of John and
Lucinda Gaddis Henderson. She married Howard W.
Chaplin in 1933; he preceded her in death in 1965.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan Dorsey of
Greenville, North Carolina; a brother, Don Henderson
of Mattoon; five grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
A son, Ronald Chaplin, two brothers and five sisters,
preceded her in death.
Helen was a member of the First Christian Church and
Women of the Moose. She was owner and operator of
the Charm Beauty Shop in Mattoon for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the
Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Reverend Robert C.
Clark officiating. Interment will be in Dodge Grove
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may
be made to the First Christian Church, 1600 Wabash
Avenue, Mattoon, Illinois 61938.
ALBERT LANDON
Albert L. Landon, age 82, of Mattoon, passed away at
12:25 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, at his
home surrounded by his family.
Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 1:30
p.m. on Friday at the Schilling Funeral Home with Len
Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Dodge
Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from Noon
until service time on Friday afternoon at the funeral
home.
Albert was born October 2, 1918, in Mattoon, a son of
Herschel R. and Elizabeth Hamilton Landon. He married
Nancy Wallace on April 9, 1949. She passed away on
August 16, 2000.
Survivors include one son, John W. Landon and wife
Candace of Charleston; two daughters, Susan M.
Landon and husband Richard Dietz of Golden,
Colorado and Rebecca J. Williams and husband
Richard J. of Charleston; four grandchildren, Richelle
Heise and husband Mark of Charleston, Richard Carroll
and wife Marcia of Lansing, Illinois, James L. Williams
and Sarah Williams both of Charleston; two
great-grandchildren, Austin and Kaitlyn Heise, both of
Charleston; two brothers, Melvin C. Landon and wife
Martha of Porterville, California and H. Dwain Landon
of Milpitas, California; one sister, Violet M. Pruitt of
Westfield; and special caregivers, Julie Letner and
Sheila Wright.
Mr. Landon was the retired owner and operator of
Landon Construction Company and served as one of
the many prominent contractors in the community.
After his retirement, Albert and Nancy enjoyed
collecting and dealing in antiques. He was a U.S.
Army/Air Corps veteran serving with the 8th Air Force
Division, 4th Fighter Group, Squadron 336, at Debden,
England. He was a member of the American Legion
Post 88 and was an active member of the Association of
the 4th Fighter Group. Memorial gifts may be made to
Lincolnland Hospice.
Lilly Lane-Rardin
PEARLINGTON, Miss. - Lilly Pearl Lane-Rardin, of
Pearlington, Miss., formerly of Charleston, died Sept. 6,
2001, in Pearlington, Miss.
A local service will be conducted at a later date.
Survivors include a son, Donald Veach of Pearlington,
Miss; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son.
Juanita Maycroft
FINDLAY - Juanita L. Maycroft, 80, of Findlay, died at
1:20 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) in her residence.
Private family services will be held Thursday in the
Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan with Rev. Ray Roberts
officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in
Findlay Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to
Lincolnland Hospice or to the family.
Mrs. Maycroft was born July 13, 1921, in Mattoon the
daughter of Elisha and Grace Wiseley Hutson. She was
an inspector for Brown Shoe Company, Sullivan. She
married William E. Maycroft on August 10, 1940 in St.
Charles, Missouri.
Surviving are her husband, William E. of Findlay;
daughter, Nancy Jeffries and her husband Donald of
Findlay; granddaughters, Heidi Cole and her husband
Brad of Sullivan, Gretchen Martin and her husband
Virgil of Charleston; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Ryan,
Andrew Cole, Zach and Rebecca Martin; nephew,
Martin E. G. Murrell and his wife Peggy of Montezuma,
Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and
two great-grandchildren.
Audrey McMorris
GREENUP - Audrey O. Freeman McMorris, 89, of
Greenup, died at 10:40 a.m. Monday (Sept. 10, 2001) at
Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Barkley
Funeral Home in Greenup. Burial will be in Aten
Cemetery in Hidalgo. Visitation will be one hour prior
to the service at the funeral home.
She was born April 11, 1912, in Cumberland County,
the daughter of Lewis and Mahala Hanners Duvall. She
married Vergil Freeman; he preceded her in death. She
married William B. McMorris; he also preceded her in
death.
Survivors include two sons, Don Freeman of
Woodridge and Richard Freeman of Lexington, Tenn.;
one daughter, Madonna Baugh of DeFuniak Springs,
Fla.; one sister, Maxine Smith of Bradley; 12
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, one daughter,
one brother, six sisters.
Mrs. McMorris had worked at Ettelbrick Shoe
Company in Casey and operated the Farm Restaurant
east of Greenup. She was a member of the First
Southern Baptist Church, Greenup.
