PARIS - Mary L. Bell, 87, of Paris, formerly of Kansas,
died at 1:52 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 8, 2001), at Paris
Community Hospital.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church
in Charleston with the Rev. Father Joe Ring officiating.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Kansas.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Sutton
& Son Funeral Home with a Wake Service at 7 p.m.
She was born Feb. 10, 1914, in Terre Haute, Ind., the
daughter of Roy Wesley and Rose Emma Wesnitzer
Pine. She married Willis A. Bell in 1930. He died in
1966.
Surviving are one son, Wayne Bell of Mattoon; one
daughter, Norma Jean Rardin of Kansas; one sister,
Annabelle E. Beltz of Marshall; and 10 grandchildren,
16 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one infant son, four
brothers, three sisters, one granddaughter and one
great-grandson.
Mrs. Bell retired from the Goding Shoe Factory in Paris
and was a member of the St. Charles Borromeo
Catholic Church in Charleston.
Memorials may be made to the St. Charles Borromeo
Catholic Church in c/o Sutton & Son Funeral Home in
Paris.
Helen Chaplin
MATTOON - Helen Henderson Chaplin, 89, of Mattoon,
died Saturday (Sept. 8, 2001), in North Carolina.
Arrangements are pending at the Mitchell-Jerdan
Funeral Home.
ROY R. CHAPLIN
Roy Robert Chaplin, age 86, of Mattoon, passed away
at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2001, at the
Prairie View Care Center of Charleston.
Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 10:30
a.m. on Tuesday at the Schilling Funeral Home with the
Reverend Dr. Mark Prevo officiating. Burial will follow
in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held
from 5:00-7:00 p.m. this (Monday ) evening at the
funeral home.
Roy was born June 29, 1915 in Mattoon, a son of John
L. and Charlotte E. Matherly Chaplin. He married
Georgia "Maxine" Spoon on November 14, 1954, in
Mattoon. She passed away on August 4, 1994.
Survivors include one son, Robert Andrew "Bob" Tays
and wife Gaylene of Hanford, California; two brothers,
William Chaplin of Scottsdale, Arizona and Charley
Chaplin of Buffalo, Missouri; one half-sister, Genevieve
Osborn of Yuma, Arizona; one grandson, Blake
Chaplin of St. Peters, Missouri; and several nephews
and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two
sisters.
Mr. Chaplin retired in 1975 as a freight conductor after
thirty years of service with the Illinois Central Railroad.
He was a member of the Eagles Club, the Illinois
Central Alumnis and the U.T.U.
Daisy Copple
CASEY - Daisy S. Copple, 91, of Casey, formerly of
Arthur, died at 2:35 p.m. Friday (Sept. 7, 2001), at
Heartland Manor in Casey.
The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at
the Arthur Cemetery with the Rev. Melvin Krutsinger
officiating. Shrader Funeral Home in Arthur is in
charge of the arrangements.
She was born Oct. 17, 1909, in Arthur, the daughter of
William and Jenny Partlow Sanders. She married Joe
Lewis in 1925. He died in 1968. She later married John
Copple and he died in 1980.
Surviving are one son, Robert Lewis of Hidalgo; one
daughter, Betty Lintchicum of Ada, Okla.; and eight
grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers and
two sisters.
Mrs. Copple was a homemaker and member of the First
Baptist Church in Arthur.
Lois Farthing
HINDSBORO - Lois Marie Farthing, 87, of Hindsboro,
died at 7:38 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 9, 2001) at Sarah Bush
Lincoln Health Center.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the
Taber Funeral Home in Oakland with Tony Crouch
officiating. Burial will be in VanVoorhis Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral
home.
She was born July 13, 1914, in West Salem, the
daughter of Elmer and Elsie Steffey Gaede. She married
Garold Farthing in 1934. He survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Bill and Gary Farthing,
both of Oakland; three daughters, Janet Bruce of
Hindsboro, Joan Schaffner of Champaign, and Barbara
Gilhaus of Homer; one brother, Fred Gaede of Odessa,
Texas; and 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren,
and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one
daughter, one brother and one sister.
Mrs. Farthing was a homemaker and school bus driver
for Earl Manning. She was a member of the Jack Oak
Homemakers Club.
Memorials may be made to the Oakland Senior's Center
in Oakland.
Lillian Floreid Keeney
Lillian Floreid Keeney, 87, of Dunwoody, Georgia,
formerly of Arthur, died at 10:15 PM Friday, Sept. 7,
2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday,
Sept. 11, 2001 at the Arthur United Methodist Church
with Rev. Jim Elder as officiant. Burial will be in the
Arthur Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM
Monday at Shrader Funeral Home, 431 S. Vine Street,
Arthur.
Mrs. Keeney was born Aug. 17, 1914 in Charco, Texas,
a daughter of William and Olga Westbrook Sumners.
She married Guy Keeney in Champaign on March 25,
1946. He preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1970.
Survivors include 3 nieces, Dr. Sandra Sumners
Hoffman and her husband Roger of Atlanta, Georgia,
who was reared by Lil and Guy; and their two children,
Brent Hoffman of Gainsville, Georgia, and Dr. Stacey
Hoffman of Gainsville, Florida; Sharon Sumners Davis
and her husband Don of El Paso, Texas; and their two
children, Mike Davis and Daryl Davis; Joyce Thiele
Baker and her husband Jack of Denton, Texas; and their
three children, Dr. Jeffrey Baker, Jana McCall, and Julia
Baker; 1 nephew, Harry R. Thiele, III and his wife Judy
of Houston, Texas; and their son, Steven Baker; and
nieces and nephews of Guy Keeney.
She was preceded in death by 1 brother, Richard
Sumners, and 1 sister, Mary Sumners Thiele.
Mrs. Keeney was an elementary school teacher having
taught several years in rural schools in the Arthur area;
1948-1955 West Prairie rural school; 1956-1961
Fairview rural school; 1961-1968 Bolinger rural school;
1968-1977 Otto Attendance Center; and then substituted
1977-1982. She was awarded Outstanding Teacher of
the Year.
She was a member of the Arthur BPW, Arthur
American Legion Auxiliary, Douglas County Retired
Teachers, NEA, IEA, AEA, and held offices within
these organizations. She was a volunteer for PALS and
the Arthur Nursing Home. She was also a member of
the Arthur United Methodist Church. Memorials are
suggested to the church.
HARRY D. SHANNON
CHARLESTON, IL - Harry D. Shannon, age 87 of
Charleston, passed away on Saturday, September 8,
2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Services
celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on
Thursday, September 13 (2001) with Reverend Ray
Allen officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday
evening from 5:00-7:00. Visitation will close with a
special Memorial Tribute conducted by the Ritual Team
of Charleston Elks B.P.O.E. #623, beginning at 6:45
p.m. Services and visitation will be at Adams Funeral
Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive in Charleston. Following
the services, interment will be held in Roselawn
Cemetery, Charleston.
Harry was born November 22, 1913 in Galesburg,
Illinois the son of Harry Drummond and Ethel E.
(Botruff) Shannon. He married Jeanette E. Stoke on
December 31, 1937 in Galesburg.
Survivors include his wife Jeanette of Charleston; three
daughters, Patricia Ann Shannon of Charleston, Karon
Rae Michel of Aliso Viejo, California and Kathleen Sue
Hale of Windermere, Florida; two granddaughters,
Robin Lynn Woods and her husband Harold of
Charleston and Nicole Marie Hale of Orlando, Florida;
and two great grandsons, Christopher Michael Tozzo
and Casey Daniel Tozzo, both of Miami, Florida. He
was preceded by his parents and one grandson, Kevin
Allen Banks.
Harry was a charter member of the Disciples of Christ
Christian Church of Charleston. He was a lifetime
member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks
having joined in 1930 and was instrumental in the
founding of the Macomb, Illinois Jr. Chamber of
Commerce and served as its president on two
occasions. He was the recipient of the Elks Grand
Exalted Ruler's Commendation Award for Outstanding
Service and twice was voted "Elk of the Year". Harry
was a Military Veteran having served in World War II
with the United States Army and was discharged with
the rank of First Sergeant. Music was a life-long
passion of his, having played professionally in the
1930's with the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra in
Long Beach, California. While serving in the military,
he also was a member of the U.S. Army Concert Band.
In Macomb, Illinois he formed his own "Dixieland"
band, served as president of the Macomb Chapter of
SPEBSQSA and sang tenor in the Barbershop
Quartettes.
Harry retired in 1981 as Vice President with Parker
Industries, after having served as Sales Representative
and Sales Manager. Earlier he had served for sixteen
years as Appliance Division Manager for Sears,
Roebuck & Company. His success in sales and sales
management led him to write and publish the book, "Be
Your Own Sales Manager." Following his retirement,
Harry was a familiar figure at the Coles County
Courthouse where he served as a Court Deputy.
In addition to his love for music and sales, Harry
enjoyed auto racing, football, boxing, public speaking,
writing, creating poetry, gardening, hunting and fishing.
In his own words, he "totally" enjoyed steel fabrication
work in his own shop where he also refurbished
antiques.
Harry's family requests that memorials in his honor be
made to the Disciples of Christ Christian Church of
Charleston. Memorials may be made at the Services or
Visitation, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330

Ruby L. Workman
Ruby L. Workman, 79, of Shelbyville, died at 9:08 a.m.
Saturday, September 8, 2001 in Shelby Memorial
Hospital, Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Howe &
Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, with Dr. Bruce
Owens officiating. Visitation from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Monday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery,
Shelbyville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given
to the American Cancer Society or First United
Methodist Church of Shelbyville.
Mrs. Workman was born on December 28, 1921 in Ash
Grove Twp., the daughter of Clarence and Fawn Storm
Veech. She was a homemaker and partner in farming
with her husband. She was a member of the First
United Methodist Church of Shelbyville where she was
active in United Methodist Women and was a teacher of
the Friendly Sunday School Class, Shelby County
Home Extension Todds Point Unit, Shelby Memorial
Hospital Auxiliary and was a former secretary and
member of the Shelby Memorial Hospital Board of
Directors. She married Wave Workman on September
24, 1939.
Surviving are her husband, Wave; and six nieces,
Patricia Williamson of Neoga, Carol Hinton of
Gainsville, Florida, Rose Kennedy of Poplar Bluff,
Missouri, Janet DeVoe of Somonauk, Cathy Workman
of St. Peters, Missouri, Vicki Burns of Carlinville, and
Judy Nelson of Belleville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one
brother, Rex Veech.
Daisy Copple
CASEY - Daisy C. Copple, 92, of Casey, formerly of
Arthur, died at 2:25 p.m. Friday (Sept. 7, 2001) at
Heartland Manor in Casey.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Shrader Funeral
Home in Arthur.
Eileen Kindall
SULLIVAN - Eileen M. Kendall, 75, of Sullivan, died at
1:15 a.m. Thursday (September 6, 2001) in her
residence.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Faith
Lutheran Church, Sullivan, with Pastor Paul McGhghy
officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the
Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan, and at the church one
hour before services. Burial will be in the Greenhill
Cemetery, Sullivan. Memorials are suggested to
Lincolnland Hospice or to the Faith Lutheran Church.
Eileen was born November 17, 1925, in Villa Grove the
daughter of William and Freda Goebel Rieck. She was a
charter member of Faith Lutheran Church and served as
financial secretary in 1978, a member of Moultrie
County Democratic Women and the Sullivan Womens
Civic Club. She began working in 1963 for Circuit
Clerk Stanley Davis, then served as Chief Deputy
Circuit Clerk for Arthur Freesh until his death in 1982
and was appointed to fulfill his term and then was
elected Moultrie County Circuit Clerk in 1984, retiring
in 1988. She married Gaylen "Gay" M. Kendall on
November 8, 1947 in Camargo and he preceded her in
death on December 4, 1986.
Surviving are her son, Rieck Kendall and his wife Patti
of Sullivan; daughter, Mary Jo Brundage and her
husband Richard of Bath, New York; sister, Joan
Junkins of Savoy; grandchildren, Kari Rogers and Katy
Rodebaugh both of Sullivan, Richard (Ben) Brundage
of Bath, New York and one great grandson, Dalton
Rogers of Sullivan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband,
two brothers and one sister.
