CHARLESTON, IL - Harold G. Davis, age 80 of rural
Charleston, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2001 at
Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Graveside Services
celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on
Wednesday (September 5) at Maple Hill Cemetery in
Westfield, Illinois with Reverend Jess Adams
officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of
Adams Funeral Chapel.
Harold was born July 3, 1921 near Westfield in Coles
County, Illinois the son of Harmon A. and Nettie
(Goble) Davis. He married Martha Joan Bousman in
Westfield on September 21, 1958.
Survivors include his wife Martha Joan; three sons,
Billy Ray Davis and his wife Jean of Chesterton,
Indiana, Ronald Gene Davis and his wife Sharon of
Hebron, Indiana and Jerry Harmon O'Connor and his
wife Vicky of Woodstock, Georgia; five grandchildren;
five great grandchildren; one step grandchild; two step
great grandchildren; and one brother, Gene A. Davis
and his wife Wanda of Greenup, Illinois. He was
preceded by his parents; three brothers, Paul E. Davis,
Hubert C. Davis and Dean H. Davis; one sister, Doris
Lowery Cooper; and a granddaughter, Jennifer
O'Connor.
Harold was a member of the First Christian Church of
Charleston. His hobbies including watching televised
basketball games and traveling with Martha Joan. He
loved animals, enjoyed feeding the birds and held a
special fondness for his cat, "Garfield". Prior to his
employment as a Custodian with the Charleston
Community Unit School District, he worked in the steel
mills in Gary, Indiana.
Harold's family requests that memorials in his honor be
made to the Westfield Gym Fund or to a charity of the
Donor's choice. Memorials may be made at the

2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
Rene Grisius
MATTOON - Rene St. Pierre Grisius, 77, of Mattoon
died at 10:45 a.m. Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at Sarah Bush
Lincoln Health Center.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the May
Chapel in Rose Hill Cemetery in Chicago. Barr Funeral
Home will be in charge of the arrangements. Local
arrangements are by the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home.
He was born July 8, 1924, in Werdengin, Luxemburg,
the son of Nicholas and Anna Schuck Grisius. He
married Renate Gey in 1950. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Randi Mathis of
Chicago and Regina Dow of Mattoon; one son, Robert
Grisius of Chicago; one brother, Michael Grisius of
Chicago; one sister, Margot Jesky of McHenry; seven
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son.
Mr. Grisius operated the R U Hungry Cafe and was a
World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of
the American Legion and Eagles Club, both in Mattoon.
Ada Gutgsell
CHARLESTON - Ada Kathleen Gutgsell, 82, of
Charleston, formerly of Indianapolis, Ind., died at 4:11
p.m. Sunday (Sept. 2, 2001), at Sarah Bush Lincoln
Health Center.
The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the
Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis with the Rev. Bill
Boaz officiating. There will be no visitation.
Harper-Swickard Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
She was born Feb. 15, 1919, in Elizabeth, Ind., the
daughter of Louis Henry and Mae Rose Devore
Gutgsell.
Surviving is one niece, Alma Jenkins of Charleston.
Ms. Gutgsell was previously a professional singer and
later a food service worker.
SONDRA MAE KRABEL
CHARLESTON, IL - Sondra Mae Krabel, age 60 of
Charleston, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2001 at
Mattoon Health Care Center. Memorial services
celebrating her life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on
Wednesday (September 5) with Pastor Kenney Bass
officiating. Visitation will be held for one and one-half
hours prior to the service beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Services and visitation will be at Adams Funeral
Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive in Charleston.
Sondra was born March 4, 1941 in Owensville, Indiana
the daughter of Donald and Jewell (Wilson) Larkin.
Survivors include Don Krabel, the love of her life for
thirty-six years; three sons, Marty Robling of
Charleston, Jimmie Robling of Houma, Louisiana and
Shannon "Hank" Krabel and his special friend Tara
Painter of Ashmore, Illinois; three daughters, Dawn
Rachel Parker and her husband Todd of Kansas,
Illinois, Colleen Thomas of Mobile, Alabama, and
Jeanine Krabel of Terre Haute, Indiana; one son-in-law,
Jim Thomas of Charleston; special friend Sheila Elliott
and her husband Glen of Westfield, Illinois; eight
grandchildren, Jana Mae Robling of Houma, Gerad
Alan Robling of Rochester, Minnesota, Gunner Parker
of Kansas, Trent Huddleston and his wife Kaiko of
Twentynine Palms, California, Destiny Painter of
Ashmore, Holly Carney and her husband Brian of
Elkhart, Indiana, Christian Chapman and his fiance
Rebecca of Terre Haute and Elliott Washburn of
Indianapolis, Indiana; three great grandchildren; two
brothers, Cody Don Larkin and his wife Jill of
Poseyville, Indiana and Jody Von Larkin and his wife
Kim of Madison, Indiana; and one sister, Brenda
Dawson and her husband Tom of Tuscon, Arizona. She
was preceded by her parents.
Sondra dearly loved her family. She enjoyed gardening,
flowers, garage sales and antiquing. She worked in the
deli at Wilb Walkers in Charleston and earlier as a Clerk
at Goodwill Industries in Mattoon.

L. Pauline Mills
GARLAND, TEXAS - L. Pauline Mills, 83, of Garland,
Texas, formerly of Mattoon and Effingham, died at 4:10
p.m. Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at Tender Living Care in
Garland, Texas.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hohlt &
File Funeral Home in Vandalia with the Rev. William
Staff officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour before service time on
Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born April 6, 1918, in Glendive, Mont., the
daughter of Miles E. and Margaret Wasser Mills.
Surviving are two brothers, Edward W. Mills of
Vandalia and Forrest E. Mills Sr. of Mesquite, Texas;
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister.
Ms. Mills was a homemaker and member of the
Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham.
Nick Nichols
ROBINSON - Nick "Herb" Nichols, 63, of Robinson,
formerly of Jasper County, died at 11:18 p.m. Saturday
(Sept. 1, 2001), at Crawford Memorial Hospital in
Robinson.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Crain
Funeral Home in Newton. Burial with military rites will
be in Andrews Cemetery in rural Jasper County.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the
funeral home.
He was born Oct. 5, 1937, in Rose Hill, the son of Myrl
and Hazel Swick Riddle Nichols. He married Loretta
White in 1967. He later married Sandra Bailey Clark.
She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Teresa Nichols of
Charleston; three stepchildren, Pam Miller of
Indianapolis, Ind., Mike Clark of St. Louis, Mo., and
Becky Miller of Robinson; and one grandson and five
step-grandchildren.
Mr. Nichols worked as a security supervisor and was an
Air Force veteran. He was a member of the Robinson
VFW, Greenup American Legion and affiliated with the
First Baptist Church in Robinson.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart or
American Diabetes Associations.
Annie Otto
ARTHUR - Annie Mae Otto, 63, of Arthur died at 7:17
p.m. Sunday (Sept. 2, 2001), at her residence.
The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Daniel J.
Otto residence, 260 N. Co. Rd. 425 E, Arthur, with
Bishop Andy Ray Mast officiating. Burial will be in
Otto Cemetery. Visitation will be anytime prior to the
service time at the residence.
She was born June 16, 1938, in Arthur, the daughter of
Joel J. and Katie Ann Schlabach Kauffman. She
married Daniel J. Otto in 1958. He survives.
Also surviving are three sons, David Otto of Arcola,
Wilmer Otto of Lovington and Delbert Otto of Wasilla,
Alaska; one daughter, Viola Yoder of Arthur; her
mother, Katie Ann Kauffman of Arthur; one brother,
Daniel Kauffman of LaGrange, Ind.; five sisters, Fannie
Miller of Hindsboro, Elsie Yoder of Arcola, Verna
Kuhns of Tuscola and Mary Ellen Lee and Irene
Kauffman, both of Arthur; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, three brothers
and two sisters.
Mrs. Otto operated the Chestercreek Harness Shop and
was a member of the Old Order Amish Faith.
Darrell Ray
SULLIVAN - Darrell D. Ray, 46, of Sullivan died at
12:15 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 1, 2001), at St. John's
Hospital in Springfield.
A graveside service will be at1:30 p.m. Tuesday in
Greenhill Cemetery. McMullin-Young Funeral Home is
in charge of the arrangements.
He was born April 14, 1955, in Sullivan, a son of
Chester F. and Mary E. Risley Ray Sr.
Surviving are his mother, Mary of Sullivan; one son,
Justin D. Ray; one daughter, Tonya L. Doss of Sullivan;
seven brothers, David, Chuck, Tom, and Chris Ray, all
of Sullivan, Jim Ray of Altamont, Mike Ray of
Mattoon, Ron Ray of Stonington; and five sisters, Linda
Cloyd of Cooks Mills, Brenda Phelps, Cindy Emel and
Mary K. Ray, all of Sullivan, and Jennifer Sain of
Windsor.
He was preceded in death by his father and two
brothers.
Mr. Ray was a retired wood worker.

VIRGIL RUNNER
Virgil Lee Runner, age 73, of Mattoon, passed away at
1:25 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2001, at the Sarah
Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 1:30
p.m. on Wednesday at the Schilling Funeral Home with
the Reverend Robert C. Clark officiating. Burial will be
held in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be
from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral
home.
Virgil was born January 30, 1928, in Mattoon, the son
of William W. and Cora Switzer Runner. He married
Elsie J. Davisson on September 6, 1946.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie J. Runner of Mattoon;
one son Michael L. Runner and one daughter, Barbara
J. Hughes, both of Mattoon; four sisters, Catherine
Phillips of Mattoon, Lela Ames of Lerna, Ruth Kite of
Mattoon, Laura Vinson of Arlington, Texas; and four
grandchildren, Annette L. Willard, Yvette A. Runner,
Rachel S. Hughes, and Casey A. Hughes, all of
Mattoon.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister
and one grandson.
Mr. Runner was a World War II Air Force veteran. He
was the owner/operator of Runner's Disposal. After his
retirement he worked part time for the Amtrack station.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #88 and
a member of I.O.O.F Lodge #260.
Judith Samuelson
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. -- Judith K. (McNutt)
Samuelson, 61, if Scottsdale, Ariz., died Monday (Sept.
3, 2001), at her residence in Arizona.
She is survived by her parents, Jack and Reta McNutt
of Charleston.
