James R. Hendricks

MATTOON - James R. Hendricks, age 84, of Mattoon, passed away at
1:47 a.m. Friday, September 28, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health
Center.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral
Home with the Reverend Wesley Cornell officiating. Interment will be in
Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m.
Sunday at the funeral home.

James R. Hendricks, son of Walter and Nellie (Wagner) Hendricks, was
born March 18, 1917 at Mattoon, Illinois. He married Elva M. Hall of
Gays, she survives. Also surviving are his son, Michael and his wife Brenda
of Farmer City and three grandchildren, Brant, Amber and Jamie. He was
preceded in death by an infant son, James; two sisters, Clara Armstrong
and Mary Brothers and one brother, C.E. "Keek" Hendricks.

Mr. Hendricks was a long time employee in the office and management of
the Hotel U.S. Grant and the U.S. Grant Motel. He also had a professional
sign lettering business.

A combat veteran of World War II, James served with the U.S. Army 77th
Infantry Division in the Pacific during the fighting on the Islands of Guam,
Leyte in the Philippines, Ie Shima and Okinawa where he was wounded.
James was nearby when Ernie Pyle, the famous war correspondent was
killed on Ie Shima by a sniper. He was also in Okinawa when he atomic
bombs were dropped, bringing World War II to a sudden end. His hero was
President Harry S. Truman for using the atomic bomb to end the war.

Mr. Hendricks was a member of the American Legion and Disabled
American Veterans. Memorial contributions may be made to the American
Cancer Society.

Richard L. Hortenstine

NEOGA - Richard L. Hortenstine, 86, of Neoga, formerly of Gays, died
9:15 a.m. Thursday (September 27, 2001) in Heartland Christian Village,
Neoga.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday in the Reed Funeral Home,
Sullivan with Pastor Jim Dona officiating. Visitation will be one hour before
the services. Burial will be in Branchside Cemetery, Gays. Memorials are
suggested to the Smyser Cemetery Fund or to the Gays Cemetery Fund.

Richard was born August 3, 1915, in Gays, the son of Jake and Emily
Marie Townley Hortenstine. He was a farmer, a member of the Smyser
Christian Church and the Moultrie County Farm Bureau. He married
Emma D. Armentrout on December 24, 1936 in Mattoon and she preceded
him in death on November 10, 1999.

Surviving are his son: Theodore L. "Ted" Hortenstine of Gays; daughters,
Mrs. James O. (Sona) Beavers of Taylorville, Mrs. Dennis J. (Dixie) Fickes
of Las Vegas, Nevada, Mrs. James C. (Cecelia) McKinnon of Mason;
brothers, Edward D. Hortenstine of Mattoon, Paul A. Hortenstine and John
T. Hortenstine both of Gays; nine grandchildren and twenty-three
great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

Raymond Manning

CHARLESTON - Raymond H. Manning, 75, of Charleston, died at 10:35
a.m. Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) at Hilltop Convalescent Center.

Arrangements are incomplete at the Caudill-King Funeral Home.

Evelyn Lawrence

MATTOON - Evelyn Ann Lawrence, 50, of Mattoon, died at 1:39 a.m.
Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church with Father Herman Niebrugge officiating. Burial will be in
Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
The Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born July 8, 1951, in Mattoon, the daughter of Gene and Pauline
Hartke Lawrence.

Survivors include four sons, Bradley Lawrence of Hillsboro, Howard
Lawrence of Chicago, Travis Lawrence of Peoria and Eddie Lawrence of
Shelbyville; five brothers, Daniel and Larry Lawrence of Mattoon, Bob and
Tom Lawrence of Charleston, and Jim Lawrence of Waterloo; and three
sisters, Nancy Thornton of Garland, Texas, Mary Miller of Arcola and Ann
Catey of Greenup.

She was preceded in death by one son, two brothers and her father.

Miss Lawrence was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church and Eagles Lodge.

Memorials may be made to the Evelyn Lawrence Memorial Fund in care of
the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home.

Etta Stremming

STRASBURG - Etta M. Stremming, 86, of Strasburg, died at 4:26 p.m.
Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) in Shelby Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday in St. Paul's Lutheran Church,
Strasburg. Visitation will be one hour before services Sunday in the church.
Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Strasburg. Howe & Yockey Funeral
Home, Strasburg, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Nov. 13, 1914, in Strasburg, the daughter of Clyde and Nita
Rincker Reel. She married Carl A. Stremming in 1933; he died in 1999.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Stremming and Jerome Stremming,
both of Strasburg, and Clyde Stremming of Maryville; one daughter,
Christine Brandt of Stewardson; one brother, Ralph Reel of Windsor; one
sister, Juanita Rankin of Strasburg; six grandchildren; two
step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two
step-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one brother.

Mrs. Stremming was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Paul's
Lutheran Church, Strasburg, and St. Paul's Ladies Aid.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Sheryl's Place in
Shelbyville.

F. Carl Butler

CHARLESTON - F. Carl Butler, 81 of Charleston, passed away at 10:56
a.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 29, 2001 at
the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home with Reverend Robert Holmes
officiating. Interment will be in Mound Cemetery with military rites by Paul
McVey V.F.W. Post #1592. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday
evening at the funeral home.

Carl was born January 17, 1920, son of Orlando "Jack" and Opal Lake
Butler. He married Vera Jo Dollar. He later married Eldene Webber; she
died in 1997.

Survivors include one son: Michael Butler of Arcola; one stepdaughter:
Brenda Ross of Edwardsville; one step-son: Larry Webber of Casper, WY;
one sister: Katherine Davis of Charleston. Seven grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by two
step-brothers, and one step-sister.

Carl retired in 1982 from the Nickel Plate/Norfolk & Western Railroad
where he had worked as a brakeman and conductor. Carl was a U.S. Navy
veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Charleston V.F.W. Post #1592, the American Legion,
Charleston Eagles' Lodge, and a life member of the Charleston Moose.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Viola Juanita Cutright

Viola Juanita Cutright, age 88, of Kankakee, Illinois passed away at 5:04
A.M. - Wednesday, September, 26, 2001 at the Riverside Community
Health Center in Kankakee, Illinois.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 A.M. - Saturday, September 29, 2001
at the Friends Grove Quaker Church in Rural Greenup with Rev. Pat
Powers officiating. Burial will be in the Friends Grove Cemetery in Rural
Greenup, IL. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 P.M. - Friday at the Bishop
Funeral home in Greenup. In memory of Viola memorials may be made to
the Alzheimers Association or the Friends Grove Quaker Church in Rural
Greenup.

Viola was born in Greenup, Illinois on April 30, 1913, the daughter of John
and Rubie (Remer) Carey. She married Victor L. Cutright in 1931, he
passed away in 1981.

Viola was a retired pianist for the Chicago Park District and for many years
she had managed a small dry cleaners in Chicago.

Viola is survived by two loving sons, Jack of Gainesville, Florida and Bruce
of Grant Park, Illinois and three grandchildren, Matt, Shasha and Andy.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

June Daugherty

PALESTINE - June Murphy Daugherty, 76, of Palestine, formerly of
York, died at 8:44 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 26, 2001) at Good Samaritan
Hospital in Vincennes, Ind.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West
Union with the Rev. Paul Gray officiating. Burial will be in York Cemetery,
southeast of West Union. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 7
a.m. until service time at the chapel.

She was born July 15, 1925, in York Township, Clark County, the
daughter of Charles C. Murphy and Edna Pearl Witherel Murphy. She
married Frederick B. Daugherty; he died in 1984.

Survivors include three daughters, Vicky Tedford of Palestine, Ernestine
"Skeet" Ramsey of Palestine and Sandy Certain of York; one brother,
George R. "Doc" Murphy of rural West Union; nine grandchildren; and 20
great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, one sister and four
great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Daugherty had retired after 15 years of service from Crawford
Electronics in Robinson.

Claire Davis

NEOGA - Claire Davis, 8 months, daughter of Kirby and Angela Davis of
Neoga, died at 1:54 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 27, 2001) at St. Louis Children's
Hospital in St. Louis.

Arrangements are incomplete at Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home in Neoga.

NEHEMIAH EATON

Nehemiah Eaton, age 84, of Mattoon, passed away at 9:45 p.m. on
Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at the Heartland Christian Village in
Neoga, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services celebrating his life will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the
Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Barbara Short officiating. Burial
will follow in the Bethel Cemetery, southeast of Mattoon, with military rites
by the V.F.W. Post 4325. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Saturday evening at the funeral home.

Nehemiah was born November 6, 1916, in Borton, the son of John and
Sarah Combs Eaton. He married Virginia L. Pettit on August 1, 1959, in
Mattoon.

Survivors include his beloved wife of forty-two years, Virginia L. Eaton of
Mattoon; seven daughters, Julia A. Eaton of Mattoon, Carol Edwards of
Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Cheryl Poorman and husband Greg of Bartlesville,
Oklahoma, Marsha Beals of Mattoon, Teresa Turner and husband Richard
of Bartlesville Oklahoma, Jeannine Phillips and husband Kenneth of
Mattoon and Brenda Stierwalt and husband Keith of Mattoon; one son,
Roger Baugher and wife Joyce of Neoga; seventeen grandchildren and
fifteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, John Eaton, two brothers, one infant
brother and two sisters.

Mr. Eaton retired from the Corps of Engineers for Lake Shelbyville in
1978. He was a member of the Marshall Avenue Christian Church. He was
a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a Sergeant in the Pacific
Theatre. Nehemiah was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 4325.

Memorial gifts may be made to the World War II Memorial in Washington
D.C., c/o Schilling Funeral Home or to the Marshall Avenue Christian
Church.
