F. M. "Bud" Higgins, age 85, of Mattoon, passed away at 4:10 p.m. on
Monday, September 24, 2001, at his residence.
Private graveside services celebrating his life began at 10:30 a.m. on
Thursday morning at the Dodge Grove Cemetery with military rites by the
Mattoon High School R.O.T.C. Those members participating were LTC
Ron Yelk, C/MAJ Miranda Reed, Detail Commander; Color Guard, C/SGT
Courtney Moran, C/SGT Kimberly Mathias, C/SGT Hollie Campbell;
Firing Detail, C/CPT Suzanne Black, C/CPT Robbie Atchley, C/SFC Brad
Davis, C/SSG, Chris Carter, C/SGM Dustin Cole, C/SGT Chuck Neeley,
C/SSG Clay Byford and C/ILT Heather Moran, Bugler on Taps. Serving as
pallbearers were David Baker, Loyce Jewel, David Kindelberger, Dan
Morgan, Steve Pollum and Dennis Willenborg. Frank Tucker served as an
honorary pallbearer. The Schilling Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
Bud was born November 29, 1915, in Jasper County, a son of Lee Allen
Higgins and Junia Ethel McCall Higgins. He married Barbara J. Smith on
February 10, 1962 in Mattoon. She survives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Higgins was a retired teamster and a member of the Teamsters Union
#26. Bud was a U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II.
While in service he received the European African Middle Eastern Theatre
Ribbon with one Silver and one Bronze Battle Star, a Bronze Service
Arrowhead, five Overseas Services Bars, one Service Stripe, the Good
Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star Medal.

Richard Hortenstine
NEOGA - Richard L. Hortenstine, 86, of Neoga, formerly of Gays, died at
9:15 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 27, 2001) at Heartland Christian Village.

Linda Jocelyn
Linda L. Jocelyn, 56, of Sullivan died at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 26,
2001) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Public visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday before the private family
funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the Reed Funeral Home with the Rev.
Leonard Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Jonathan Creek Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Jonathan Creek Christian Church.
Linda was born on August 26, 1945, in Arthur, IL, the daughter of Thomas
W. and Erma E Kerchevel Jocelyn. She attended the Jonathan Creek
Christian Church and had been a member of the First United Methodist
Church in Arthur.
Survivors include: a sister, Charlene Elzy and her husband Gale of Sullivan;
nephews, Mark Elzy of St. Louis, MO, Lyle Elzy and Jeff Elzy both of
Sullivan; niece, Jennifer Lambdin of Lovington; great nephews, Aaron and
Brandon Elzy both of Mattoon, Hayden and Tyler Elzy both of Sullivan;
great-nieces, Hilari Elzy, Kendra Elzy and Hannah Elzy all of Sullivan,
Cassandra and Elizabeth Lambdin both of Lovington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Daniel Miller
FINDLAY - Daniel C. Miller, 37, of Findlay, died at 5:19 p.m. Tuesday
(Sept. 25, 2001) in Shelby Memorial Hospital, Shelbyville.
Graveside services will be 4 p.m. today at the Findlay Cemetery with the
Rev. Randy Miller officiating. There will be no visitation. The Howe and
Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Jan. 5, 1964, in Dade County, Fla., the son of George E. and
Viola J. Collins Miller. He married Sue Rincker Welton in 1992; she
survives.
Other survivors include one son, Arthur of California; one daughter,
Brittany of Tennessee; two stepchildren, Nicole and Justin Welton of
Decatur; one brother, Tim Miller of Michigan; and one sister in California.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Mr. Miller was a Marine Corps Veteran.
RICHARD MOFFETT
CHARLESTON, IL - Richard Moffett, age 77 of Charleston, passed away
on Thursday, September 27, 2001 at Prairie View Care Center of
Charleston. In fulfillment of Mr. Moffett's wishes, there will be no services
or visitation.
Dick was born August 15,1924 in Charleston, Illinois the son of Mitchell
and Gaynel (Rankin) Moffett. He married Theresa "Brownie" Kapulka in
1945 in Worcester, Massachusetts. She survives. He later married Jeanne
Kull of Mattoon in 1969. She preceded him in death in 1996.
He is also survived by two sons, Paul Moffett and his wife Jennifer of
Florissant, Missouri and Ronald Moffett of Nantucket, Massachusetts; one
stepson, William Kull and his wife Linda of Charleston; eight grandchildren,
Sarah Moffett and Neal Moffett of Florissant, Jamie Moffett, Brian
Moffett, Jeremy Moffett and Tina Reid, all of Charleston, David Moffett of
Indiana; and Jennifer Crowe of Madison, Wisconsin; one step grandchild,
Michael Kull of Mattoon; and two brothers, Kenny Moffett of Ashmore,
Illinois and Robert Moffett of Florida. He was preceded by his parents and
an infant sister.
Dick was a Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey Post
1592 of Charleston and Charleston B.P.O.E. Elks #623. He was a World
War II Veteran, having served with the United States Marine Corp. Prior to
his affiliation with Arizona based Senco Products as a Sales Representative,
he farmed in Morgan Township, northeast of Charleston. His farming
background was responsible for his love of animals and the out-of-doors.
Those closest to Dick will warmly remember him as a quiet and sincere
man who truly enjoyed his grandchildren.
Dick's family requests that memorials in his honor be made to the American

Jason Volkman
MATTOON - Jason David Volkman, 24, of Mattoon, died at 5:48 p.m.
Wednesday (Sept. 26, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church,
Stewardson. Burial will be in the Stewardson Cemetery. Visitation will be 5
to 8 p.m. today at the Brummerstedt Funeral Home in Stewardson.
He was born June 23, 1977, the son of David and Sandra Beitz Volkman.
Survivors include his mother of Mattoon; one sister, Tammy Volkman of
Mattoon; and one grandmother, Ruth Volkman of Stewardson.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Volkman was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in
Stewardson, the Coles County 4-H Alumni and a member of the Charleston
FFA.

Mrs. Dorothy B. Beals
SHELBYVILLE, IL - Mrs. Dorothy B. Beals, 72, of Shelbyville, Illinois,
died at 5:32 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 at Memorial Medical Center,
Springfield, IL.
The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at the Swengel-O'Dell
Funeral Home, in Neoga, with the Rev. Ron Lake officiating. Burial will be
in Beals Cemetery, Neoga, IL. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the
funeral home.
She was born July 9, 1929, in Coles County, a daughter of Clarence and
Edith (White) White. She married Levi Franklin Beals on March 3, 1947, in
Charleston, IL; he died on Oct. 8, 1971.
Survivors include two sons, David L. Beals and wife Georgia of Bethany,
IL, and Walter G. Beals and wife Mary of Henton, IL; four daughters,
Mrs. Jerry (Frances) Bolin of Bethany, IL, Rosemary Beals of Henton, IL,
Mrs. Leon (Rosemarie) Rochat of Sullivan, IL and Mrs. Scott (Shirley)
Hopkins of Lake Wood, IL; five brothers, Stanley White of Neoga, IL,
Jerry White of Texas, George White of Montrose, IL, Larry White of
Shumway, IL, Terry White of Trilla, IL; six sisters, Mrs. Norma Clinton of
Mattoon, IL, Mrs. Barbara Sanderson of Neoga, IL, Mrs. Phyllis Hennon
of Windsor, IL, Mrs. Ruby Pearl Phillips of DeQuoin, IL, Mrs. Kay
Bueker of Toledo, IL and Mrs. Joyce Collins of Montrose, IL; 11
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, one sister and one
grandson.
Mrs. Beals was a former employee of the Brown Shoe Company in
Sullivan, IL and of Continental Bond Co. of Shelbyville, IL.

Wilbur Eugene Brant
NEOGA, IL - Wilbur Eugene Brant, 70, of Neoga, Illinois, died at 5:45
p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at his residence in Neoga.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at the Swengel-O'Dell
Funeral Home, in Neoga, with the Rev. Ron Lake officiating. Burial will be
in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery, Neoga. Visitation will be two hours
before the service at the funeral home.
He was born Nov. 5, 1930, in Arkansas City, Kansas, a son of Harold and
Virgie (Titus) Brant. He married L. Fern Phillips on Nov. 13, 1951, in
Charleston, IL; she died on Aug. 4, 1993.
Survivors include two sons, William E. Brant of Neoga, IL, and James E.
Brant and wife Denise of Neoga, IL; one daughter, Kathie J. West of Paris,
IL; two brothers, Edgar Brant of Clarksville, MO and Rex Brant of Ft.
Scott, Kansas; four sisters, Mrs. Sharon Martin of Sarasota, FL, Mrs.
Jenny Matteson of Charleston, IL, Mrs. Betty Wilson of Homer, IL and
Mrs. Nancy Johnson of Tipton, IL; two grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Mr. Brant retired from General Electric Co. of Mattoon after 25 years. He
had also worked for Sherman-Williams Co. in Mattoon and also owned and
operated Brant Trash Service in Neoga for several years. Mr. Brant had
served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

F. Carl Butler
CHARLESTON - F. Carl Butler, 81, of Charleston, died at 10:56 a.m.
Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at his home.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home
with the Rev. Robert Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery
with military rites by VFW Post 1592. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday
at the funeral home.
He was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Arcola, the son of Orlando "Jack" and Opal
Lake Butler. He married Vera Jo Dollar; she died in 1989. He married
Eldene Howard; she died in 1997.
Survivors include one son, Michael Butler of Arcola; one stepson, Larry
Webber of Casper, Wyo.; one stepdaughter, Brenda Ross of Edwardsville;
one sister, Katherine Davis of Charleston; seven grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, one stepbrother and
one stepsister.
Mr. Butler retired in 1982 from the Nickel Plate/Norfolk and Western
Railroad, where he had been a brakeman and conductor. He was a World
War II Navy veteran and member of the Charleston VFW Post 1592, the
American Legion, Charleston Eagles Lodge and a life member of the
Charleston Moose.
