CHARLESTON - Elmo Bennett, 86, of Charleston, died at 12:35 a.m.
Sunday (Sept. 30, 2001) at Hilltop Nursing Home.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Harper-Swickard Funeral
Home with the Rev. Ray Finney officiating. Burial will be in Hurricane
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
He was born May 26, 1915, in Hutton Township, a son of Zollie and
Matilda Rogers Bennett. He married Myrtle Cunningham in 1942. She
survives.
Also surviving are one son, Donald Bennett of Charleston and four
grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and six
step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, six sisters and one daughter.
Mr. Bennett was a member of the Salisbury Church. He previously worked
for Mid-State Foundry.
Memorials may be made to Hilltop Nursing Home.
Raymond Manning
CHARLESTON - Raymond H. Manning, 75, of Charleston, died at 10:30
a.m. Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) at Hilltop Convalescent Care Center.
A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Roselawn
Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Boaz officiating. There will be no visitation.
Caudill-King Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born June 17, 1926, in Coles County, a son of Claude and Callie
Centers Manning. He married Jeanne Newell.
Surviving are one son, Tony R. Manning of Fort Worth, Texas; one
daughter, Jackie Lynn DeHollander of St. Louis, Mo., and one
granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Mr. Manning was a retired brickmason and WW II veteran.
Dorothy Pierce
MATTOON - Dorothy D. Pierce, 91, of Mattoon, died at 1:05 p.m.
Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at Mattoon Health Care Center.
Arrangements are pending at the Schilling Funeral Home.
Stanley 'Buss' Prevo
WEST UNION - Stanley "Buss" Prevo, 87, of rural West Union, died
Sunday (Sept. 30, 2001) at 8:30 a.m. at his residence.
A private graveside service will be held at Darwin Cemetery. There will be
no visitation. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to
the Darwin Cemetery to assist with its upkeep.
He was born Sept. 22, 1914, in Prairie Creeek, Ind., to Ross Prevo and
Blanche Figg Prevo. He married Eunice Matheney on July 20, 1946; she
survives.
Also surviving are: a stepdaughter, Patsy Emanus of rural West Union, a
stepson, Stanley Kraemer of Marshall; six step-grandchildren; and six
great-step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Prevo was a lifelong farmer. He served as York Township highway
commissioner for 30 years. He was instrumental in the creation and
operation of Darwin Ferry.
Carroll Rickelman
MACHESNEY PARK - Carroll E. "Rick" Rickelman, 71, of Machesney
Park, died at 4:20 p.m. Friday (Sept. 28, 2001) at Rockford Memorial
Hospital.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Delehanty Funeral
Home Ltd. in Loves Park with the Dr. William Richard Kerr officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8
p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
He was born Dec. 23, 1929, in Mattoon, the son of Anthony and Nell
DeBoult Rickelman. He married Freda Guntharp in 1961. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Ricky Rickelman of Rockford; one daughter,
Carol Kite of Machesney Park; two sisters, Lucille Runner of Mattoon and
Eileen Brockway of Rockford; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, one sister and one
granddaughter.
Mr. Rickelman retired from Amerock Corp. and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was a former member of the Channel Hoppers CB Club of Mattoon.
Leslie Aikman
SPRINGFIELD - Leslie G. Aikman, 93, of Springfield, formerly of
Mattoon, died at 2:25 p.m. Monday (Oct. 29, 2001) at Memorial Medical
Center.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church,
Springfield, with the Rev. Richard Irwin officiating. Military honors will be
performed. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation
will be 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home,
Springfield, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
He was born March 22, 1908, in Madison County, the son of George E.
and Wilmina Aikman. He married Germaine "Gerry" Halle; she died in
1987.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Aikman Gannon of New Buffalo,
Mich.; one brother, A.L. Aikman of Carbondale; one sister, Helen Boyd of
Barrington; and companion Molly Gray.
He was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Mr. Aikman was a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked as a
distributor of Curtis Publications, a field representative and Area Executive
Director for the American Cancer Society and retired in 1973, but
continued to work as a consultant to Cancer Prevention Studies. He was a
member of the First Christian Church, the American Legion, Elks Lodge
158 and an honorary member of the Illinois Society of Association
Executives. He was also a member of the Springfield Art Association,
POLKA of America and a member of the Foundation of Eastern Illinois
University.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the American
Cancer Society, both of Springfield.
Winona Berner
SULLIVAN - Winona G. (Tiny) Berner, 76, of Sullivan, died on Tuesday,
October 30, 2001, at 8:17 a.m. in the Eastview Terrace, Sullivan.
Funeral services will be Thursday, November 1, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. in the
McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan, visitation will be 1 hour before
service time. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan. Memorials:
American Diabetes Association or the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Berner was born on November 10, 1924, in Mt. Pulaski, the daughter
of Oral and Lillian Eschbaugh Trailor. She was retired from Brown Shoe
Factory and a homemaker. Member of the First Church of God, Sullivan,
American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Sullivan. She married Albert R. Berner
on May 12, 1946, in Springfield and he preceded her in death on December
1, 1995.
Surviving are her sons, Albert Michael Berner and wife Samantha, Roger
Lee Berner and wife Lynn, all of Sullivan; brother, Ralph Trailor of
Tacoma, WA.; sisters, Ruby Callendar and Mildred Leffler, both of
Mattoon; ten grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters, and one brother.
Tiny enjoyed the simple things in life - ice cream, hot chocolate, playing
cards with friends - but most of all spending time with her family.
Melvin John Gammill
Melvin John Gammill, 92, of Canon City, Colorado, died Oct. 23, 2001 in
Canon City. He was born June 27, 1909, in Coles County, Ill., to John S.
and Emma (Lycon) Gammill.
He was the former owner/operator of Gammill Trucking in Lerna, IL. He
also worked for Daniel's Chevrolet in Colorado Springs. He loved to hunt
and fish.
Mr. Gammill was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He married
Rachel (Cornetta) Gammill, who preceded him in death March 14, 1996.
He is survived by children: Paul Gammill of Lerna, IL, Marjorie Plunkett of
Perryville, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Betty Schisler of Roseville, IL; 17
grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a few
great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Gammill was preceded in death by the mother
of his children, Blanche Best Gammill; daughters, Carolyn Pegg, Ruth
Poffenbarger, Melva VanDeventer, and Susan Keller; three sisters, Faye
Bloomfield, Florence Hill, Myrtle Lawyer; and one brother, Elsworth
Gammill.
Visitation was held Thursday Oct. 25, 2001 and graveside services were
held at the Mountain Vale Memorial Park.
Ann Harthan
CASEY, Ill. - Ann Harthan, 67, of Casey died at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday (Oct.
30, 2001) at her residence.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Markwell Funeral Home, in
Casey, with the Rev. Tom Marsh officiating. Burial will be in Mount
Cemetery south of Casey. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the
funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association
or March of Dimes.
She was born Dec. 3, 1933, in Detroit, Mich., a daughter of John W.
Gaddis and Katherine Parcel Gaddis. She married James R. Harthan on
Feb. 9, 1957; he survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Pam Farr and husband Ken of
Ashmore, Ill., and Patty Weaver and husband Curt of Casey; one son,
Jamey Harthan of Casey, Ill.; a brother, Chuck Gaddis and his wife Bev of
Poplar Grove, Ill.; one sister, Pat Smith and husband Paul of Big Spring,
TX; five grandchildren, Kathy Coleman and husband Kevin of
Indianapolis, IN, Grete and Leslie Savage of Champaign, IL, and Ben and
Bethany Weaver of Casey, IL; two step grandchildren, Angie Bridgeforth
and husband Matt and Blaine Farr and wife Misty, all of Ashmore, IL; two
great-grandchildren, Patrick and Matthew Coleman of Indianapolis, Ind.
Mrs. Harthan worked many years as a waitress for the Davis Cafe and the
KZ before retiring.
Shirley Skinner
CRETE, Neb. - Shirley G. Skinner, 59, of Crete, Neb., formerly of
Mattoon, died Oct. 10, 2001, at her residence.
The Kuncel Funeral Home, Crete, Neb. was in charge of the arrangements.
She was born March 3, 1942, in Mattoon, the daughter of Russell and
Virgie Roark Rich. She married Arlen Skinner; he survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Gerald Marshall of Arlington, Texas, and
Robert Marshall of Beatrice, Neb.; one brother, Ernest Cowger of
Lafayette, Ind.; two sisters, Pearl Miller of Charleston and Clara Dare of
Mattoon; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Skinner was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
