BARBARA BEACHEY

ARTHUR - Barbara Beachey, 83, of Arthur, IL, passed away at 7:55 p.m.
Friday, October 19, 2001, at her residence in rural Arthur, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2001 at
the Arthur Mennonite Church, 710 E. Park St., Arthur, IL. Rev. Gary
Martin and Rev. Paul Sieber will officiate. Burial will be in the Arthur
Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00
p.m. at the church. The Edwards Funeral Home, 221 East Main St., Arcola
is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara was born on June 9, 1918 in Hicksville, Ohio. She was a daughter
of Joseph and Amanda (Schwartz) Briskey. She married Milton J. Beachey
on October 26, 1944 in Hicksville, Ohio. He passed away on August 10,
2000.

She is survived by 6 children: Larry Beachey and his wife Paula of Elkhart,
IN, Will Beachey and his wife Ruth of Bismarck, N.D., Bob Beachey and
his wife Linda of LaMarque, TX, Rosie Jantz and her husband Kent of
Walton, KS, Ernie Beachey and his wife Barb of Clearwater, KS, Dorothy
Beachey of Brookfield, IL; 12 grandchildren, Cristopher Beachey and
Phillip Beachey and his wife Carrie, Kendric Beachey and his wife Michelle
and Brigitte, Joel and Matthew Beachey Nathan and Wendel Beachey,
Jason and Troy Jantz and Lindsey and Kelsey Kirkpatrick; 3 brothers,
William Briskey of Pryor, OK, Elmer Briskey and his wife Kay of Fortville,
IN, Raymond Briskey and his wife Eileen of Rockville, IN; 1 sister, Esther
Gochenour and her husband John of Rossville, IN.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Milton; 1
granddaughter, Karisa; 3 brothers, Wilmer, Dan and Joseph Irvin Briskey;
and 1 sister, Lydia Yoder.

Barbara was a member of the Arthur Mennonite Church, she was a selfless
Christian, wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was a devoted
servant to her family and church community. She was an expert
seamstress, cook and baker. Barbara was dearly loved and will be sadly
missed by her children and grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Hospice.

LOUISE BROCK-JONES

CHARLESTON, IL - Louise Brock-Jones, age 85, and retired Charleston
teacher, passed away from complications due to her battle with Parkinson's
Disease on Friday, October 19, 2001 at Brooking Park in Chesterfield,
Missouri. Services celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on
Tuesday, October 23 (2001) at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 2206
Fourth Street, Charleston with Reverend Dale Beck officiating. Visitation
will be held Monday evening from 5-7 at Adams Funeral Chapel. Interment
will follow the services at Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston.

Louise was born January 27,1916 in Hutton Township in Coles County,
Illinois, the daughter of Orren L. and Clara G. (Bidle) Goble. On November
23, 1944 she married Eugene Brock-Jones in Charleston.

Louise is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Ann Anderson and her
husband Dr. Richard E. of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Barbara Jean
File and her husband William Daniel of Manchester, Missouri; five
grandchildren, David Richard Anderson and James Brock Anderson, both
of Albuquerque, Sarah Louise Anderson of Houston, Texas, D. Jason File
of New Haven, Connecticut and Benjamin Brock-Jones File of Columbia,
Missouri; one sister, Eleanor Elliott and her husband Howard of Westfield,
Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband
Eugene who passed away on June 10, 1977 and her parents.

Louise was a member of the United Methodist Church of Westfield, Illinois
where she served as organist and choir director, Charleston Education
Association, Illinois Education Association, Illinois Music Education
Association, National Music Education Association, Coles County Home
Extension and the Westfield Women's Club, also serving as its president.
She was a 1934 Graduate of Westfield High School and a 1938 Graduate
of Illinois Normal State College, majoring in English and Music Education.
She retired from the Charleston Community School District #1 in 1973
after teaching English and Elementary Music for thirteen years. Earlier she
taught English for seven years in Fairmount and Willamsburg, both in
Illinois. She also was active in the management of her family's grain farms.

Playing the piano, reading, sewing and collecting music boxes were her
hobbies. Louise will be warmly remembered as a loving and devoted
mother, grandmother, aunt and sister who was incredibly proud of her
daughters, their husbands and children.

Louise's family requests that memorial gifts in her honor be made to the
American Parkinson's Disease Association or the American Heart
Association.

Memorial gifts may be made at the Visitation or Services, or mailed to
Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.

WILLIAM CARL COOPER

CHARLESTON, IL - William Carl Cooper, age 84 of rural Charleston,
passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2001 at Prairie View Care Center.
Services celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday,
October 24, (2001) with Reverend Pat Murphy serving as officiant.
Visitation will be held prior to the Services from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Services
and Visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive,
Charleston. Interment will follow the services at Roselawn Cemetery in
Charleston.

Carl was born May 27, 1917 in Union Township in Cumberland County,
Illinois, the son of William L. and Hazel Cooper. On February 26,1949, he
married Helen Martha Shrader in Cornith, Mississippi. She preceded him
on April 11, of this year.

Other survivors include four sons, Gary Johns, Larry Cooper and his wife
Cheri, Rex Cooper and his wife Becky and Mark Cooper and his wife
Connie, all of Charleston; one daughter, Carla Robison and her husband
Doug of Lerna, Illinois; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; four brothers, Zarlie Cooper of Ashmore, Doris
Cooper and his wife Dorothy of Covington, Indiana, Lowell Cooper and his
wife Patsy of Mattoon, Illinois and Loren Cooper and his wife Tina of
Ponce de Leon, Missouri; and one sister, Marion Webb of Springfield,
Illinois. He was also preceded by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann
Johns; two great-grandchildren, Peyton Hite and April Johns; one brother,
Verl Cooper; and two sisters, Berna Cooper and Mernal Cartwright.

A World War II Veteran, Carl served with pride, beginning with the 9TH
infantry, then later with the 82nd/101st Airborne Division and at the end of
the hostility with the 326th Glider lnfantry. At Separation, he was serving
with the 173rd Airborne. His career was two-fold, one being a
self-employed farmer and the other being a twenty-year "meticulous"
Custodian at Jefferson Elementary School. He was very good at both. He
was a member of the Coles County Farm Bureau, possessed a passion for
the out-of-doors, enjoyed fishing and raccoon hunting. But, first and
foremost, Carl was a family man. His wife of nearly fifty-years, his children
and grandchildren were the focus of his life and his love for them was given
back to him many-fold.

Carl's family requests that memorial gifts in his honor be made to the
American Kidney Foundation. Memorial gifts may be made at the Visitation
or Services, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive,
Charleston, IL 61920.

Carol Dailey

KINGSFORD HEIGHTS, Ind. - Carol Ann Dailey, 54, of Kingsford
Heights, Ind., formerly of Mattoon, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 17,
2001) at St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Center in Hammond, Ind.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday (Oct. 22, 2001) at the Cutler Funeral
Home in LaPorte, Ind., with the Rev. Tim Baines officiating. Interment will
be in Pine Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m.
until service time on Monday at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 9, 1947, in Mattoon, Ill., the daughter of Ernest H. and
Virginia (Crose) Miller. She married Ronald E. Dailey on April 8, 1973, in
Mattoon, Ill.; he survives.

Other survivors include her parents of Mattoon, Ill; a daughter, Terresa
Lynn Eaton Lowry and husband Jon of Walkerton, Ind.; a granddaughter,
MacKenzi Angela Lowry of Walkerton; two brothers, Ron and David
Miller, both of Mattoon, Ill; three sisters, Judy Whitinger of Mattoon, Ill.,
Gloria Bailey of Windsor, Ill. and Angela Miller of Arcola, Ill.

She was preceded in death by a son, Matthew Eaton who died May 31,
1988; and a grandfather, John Miller who died in 1983.

Mrs. Dailey was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Memorials are suggested to Riley's Children's Hospital.

Juanita Eaton

SULLIVAN - Juanita Eaton, 76, of Sullivan, died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday,
(Oct. 21, 2001) at her home.

Arrangements are incomplete at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home,
Sullivan.

Omer Mescher

BETHANY - Omer John Herman Mescher, 91, of Bethany, formerly of
Metropolis, died at 10:42 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in St. Mary's
Hospital, Decatur.

The funeral will be held at10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian
Church, Bethany, with the Rev. Charles Witte officiating. Burial will be in
the Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany. Visitation will be from 6 to
8 p.m. Tuesday at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Bethany.

He was born March 28, 1910, in Metropolis, the son of Herman Frederick
Christian and Clara Caroline Anne Moller Mescher. He married Nellie Fay
Davidson in 1940; she survives.

Other survivors include sons, Larry Mescher of Bethany, Dwaine Mescher
of Decatur; daughter, Linda Bartimus of Decatur; brothers, Carl Mescher
of Metropolis, Troy Mescher of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren; a
step-grandchild; two step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Bethany.

Loree Peterson

MATTOON - Loree Sadie Peterson, 98, of Mattoon, died at 12:45 p.m.
Sunday, (Oct. 21, 2001) at the Mattoon Health Care Center.

The funeral will be held at1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Schilling Funeral Home
with the Rev. Jerry Jones officiating. Burial will be in Dodge Grove
Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until service time on Tuesday at the
funeral home.

She was born Sept. 8, 1903, in Cumberland County, a daughter of Nick
and Ivy Darling Tanner. She married Otis Peterson in 1920; he died in
1975.

Survivors include three sons, Donald Peterson of Decatur, Eugene Peterson
of Mattoon and Duane Peterson of Springfield; five grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, two brothers, three sisters
and one grandchild.

Mrs. Peterson was a homemaker.

Lloyd S. Schlechte

STRASBURG, Illinois - Lloyd S. Schlechte, 91, of Strasburg, died at 1:40
p.m. Friday, October 19, 2001 in Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation.
Effingham.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Lutheran Church,
Strasburg. Visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday in Howe & Yockey
Funeral Home. Strasburg and one hour before service time in the church.
Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Strasburg. Memorials may be given to
the Building Fund of St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Donor's Choice.

Mr. Schlechte was born on December 18, 1909 in Strasburg, the son of
Henry Frederick and Amanda Stremming Schlechte. He was a retired
farmer, carpenter and owner of Schlechte Lumber in Strasburg. He was a
member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Strasburg, where he was an officer
for LLL and held various other offices within the church. He married
Madonna Josephine Blake on June 6, 1928. She died on June 12, 1994. He
then married Ellen Roellig on September 9, 1995. She died in March 2000.

Surviving are his son, Warren Schlechte and wife Lois of Effingham and
George Schlechte and wife Rosemary of Strasburg; daughters, Ramona
Radloff and husband John of Strasburg, Bettie Mellendorf of Effingham,
and Donna Rose "Duckie" Johnson and husband Ron of Stewardson; 10
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents; both wives; one brother, Edgar
Schlechte; and two grandchildren.

Lloyd was a loving husband, a devoted father to his children and a
wonderful grandpa. He will be dearly remembered by his family and his
many friends.

SOPHIA LOU SHAFER

CHARLESTON, IL - Sophia Lou Shafer, age 71 of Ashmore, passed away
on Thursday, October 18, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Services celebrating her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October
22 (2001) with Pastor Scott Sims serving as officiant. Visitation will be held
Sunday evening from 6-9. Services and Visitation will be held at Adams
Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston. Interment will follow the
services at Mound Cemetery in Charleston.

Sophia Lou was born June 10,1930 in Charleston, Illinois, the daughter of
Clyde and Alice (Collins) Burrus. In the spring of 1952, she married
Franklin J. Shafer in Indianapolis, Indiana. He preceded her in 1978.

She is survived by one son, Randy Shafer and his wife Cindy of Oakland,
Illinois; one daughter, Cathy Shafer of Ashmore, Illinois; one grandson,
Matthew Shafer of Oakland; one brother, Lowell Burrus and his wife June
of Roann, Indiana; an aunt, Julia Weaver of Charleston; one uncle, Paul
Burrus and his wife Mary of Edwardsville, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Lois
Burrus of Charleston; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was
also preceded by her parents and two brothers, Clyde E. Burrus and Paul
C. Burrus.

Sophia Lou was a member of the Enon Baptist Church in Ashmore and the
Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey Post 1592 of
Charleston. She retired as a Custodian at Charleston Junior High School
and then returned to the Charleston Public School system as a cooks helper
at Mark Twain Elementary School. Her interests included reading,
crossword puzzles and word jumbles, mini golf, and television game shows
­ Jeopardy was her favorite. Being in the presence of Sophia Lou was
special; her sense of humor was entertaining and endearing and her
conversation was enlightening. Her greatest treasures were her children and
her grandson, Matthew; they will warmly remember her as a woman who
truly earned the titles of mother and grandmother.

Sophia Lou's family requests that memorial gifts in her honor be made to
The Warehouse Youth Center or the Mark Twain Elementary School
Library. Memorial gifts may be made at the Visitation or Services, or
mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL
61920.

James Shallenberger

SHELBYVILLE - James A. "Bud" Shallenberger, 76, of Shelbyville,
formerly of Bement, died at 10:05 p.m. Thursday, (Oct. 18, 2001) at
Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Howe and Yockey Funeral
Home, Shelbyville, with Gary Crowder officiating. Burial with military rites
will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Visitation will be 5 to 8
p.m. today and one hour before the service on Sunday at the funeral home.

He was born Feb. 17, 1925, in rural Tower Hill, the son of Jesse Simon
and Augusta Elizabeth Mathias Shallenberger. He Patricia A. Seats in 1961;
she survives.

Other survivors include sons Lyle R. Shallenberger of Farmington, N.M.,
and Michael L. Shallenberger of Shelbyville; daughter Jamie K. Horsman of
Shelbyville; brother John W. Shallenberger of Clayton, Del.; sister Wilma
Jean Heinz of Odin; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Mr. Shallenberger was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He started
the National Guard Armory Shelbyville. He was deputy sheriff and later
chief of police for seven years. He also worked at the Mobil and Marathon
stations and Burk & Robbins Construction Co., all in Shelbyville, Blaw
Knox in Mattoon and Borg Warner in Decatur. He became administrator of
the Army Reserve Center in Urbana in 1967 and retired in 1987. He was
the Bement village president. He was a member of the Blue Lodge of
Jackson Masonic Lodge 53, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 69, VFW
Post 4829 and Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post 81, all of
Shelbyville, and the Non-Commissioned Officers Association.

Memorials may be made to the scholarship funds of either the Jackson
Masonic Lodge 53 or Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 69, both of
Shelbyville.
