Lloyd Schlechte

STRASBURG - Lloyd S. Schlechte, 91, of Strasburg, died at 1:40 p.m.
Friday, October 19, 2001 in Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation, Effingham.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Howe & Yockey Funeral Home,
Strasburg.

Jacob "Jake" Daniel Stanford

Jacob "Jake" Daniel Stanford, 16, of Arthur died at 3:30 A.M. Friday at the
Carle Foundation Hospital. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held
at 2:00 P.M. Monday at the Epperson Funeral Chapel, with the Rev Chuck
Stanford officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. until time of
service. Burial will be at the Arthur Cemetery.

Jake was born June 28, 1985 in Tuscola, the son of Candice Stanford. He
is survived by his mother, Candice Stanford of Arthur; one brother, Travis
Stanford of Arthur; one sister, Sarah Stanford of Arthur; grandparents,
Elmer and LuLa Belle Stanford of Arthur; great-grandmother, Sarah
Wisner of Salem; three uncles, Chuck Stanford and his wife Carolyn of
Mattoon, Gerald Stanford and wife Dee of Mattoon, and Carl Stanford and
wife Sherry of Sidney; six cousins, James Stanford, Kimberly Stanford,
Mark Stanford, Chris Hoefler, Cara Hoefler, and Caithlin Wheeler also
survive him. He is also survived by several great aunts and uncles and
many good friends. His great-grandparents, Walter and Versie Stanford, his
great-grandfather, Carl Eblin and his aunt Glenda Lou Stanford preceded
him in death.

Jake was a member of the Mattoon Christian Center; he had a great love
for basketball, fishing and skating. He was known for his good humor as
well for his love for food. When you met Jake, you got a hug and you were
no longer a stranger. He was proud of being a good big brother to his
brother Travis and his sister Sarah. In all Jake had a great love for his
family.

MERLE TIPSWORD

CHARLESTON, IL - Wilbur Merle Tipsword, age 79, passed away on
Thursday, October 18, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Services
celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 21 (2001)
with Reverend Bill Boaz serving as officiant. Visitation will be held this
evening (Saturday) from 6-8, with Masonic Services to close the visitation,
beginning at 7:45 p.m. Hutton Township Masonic Lodge #698 will conduct
the services. Services and Visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel,
2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston. Interment, with Military Rites conducted
by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey Post 1592,
will follow the services at Washington Cemetery in Cumberland County.

Merle was born October 24,1921 in Hutton Township in Coles County,
Illinois, the son of Harry and Ersa (Tomberlin) Tipsword. He married
Mildred Duvall on April 9,1938. Following her death on September 29,
1986, he married Jean List on July 25, 1987.

He is survived by Jean, his loving and devoted wife; two daughters, Sherry
Tipsword of Charleston and Debra Taylor and her husband Mike of Lerna,
Illinois; two sons, Don Plummer and Dan Plummer and his wife Kari, all of
Charleston; four grandchildren, Misty Pearcy and her husband Jack,
Crystal Smith and her husband Caleb, Hayley Plummer and Zachary
Plummer, all of Charleston; one great grandchild, Macy Pearcy of
Charleston; and four brothers, Glenna Tipsword of Safford, Arizona, John
Tipsword and his wife Elsie of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, Robert Tipsword
and his wife Winnie of Charleston and Ron Tipsword and his wife Marietta
of Hogansville, Georgia. He was also preceded by his parents.

Merle was a member of the New Hope Kickapoo Church, the Hutton
Township Masonic Lodge #698 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Paul McVey
Post 1592 of Charleston. Merle loved his country and was a proud Military
Veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during World War II. A retiree
from the United States Postal Service, Merle also was involved in
automotive and real estate sales. Of all his interests, his family came first.
His family's gatherings were special to him and equally special to Jean, his
children and grandchildren. His loving family said it best - "Merle will live
on forever in our hearts."

Merle's family requests that memorial gifts in his honor be made to a
Charity of the Donor's Choice. Memorial gifts may be made at the
Visitation or Services, or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee
Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.

Harry K. Van Deveer

LOVINGTON - Harry K. Van Deveer, 87, of Lovington, died on Saturday,
October 20, 2001, at 11:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Hospital. Decatur.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Lovington United
Methodist Church, Lovington, visitation will be Monday from 6:00-8:00
p.m. the McMullin-Young Funeral Home; Lovington with a 7:30 p.m.
Masonic Services. Burial with military rites will be in the Keller cemetery,
Lovington. Memorials: Lovington United Methodist Church, Lovington.

He was born on July 21, 1914, in Moultrie County, the son of William and
Bessie Kendall Van Deveer. He was in the Navy during WW II, retired
from USI Captain Guard Force and a retired farmer. He was a member of
the Lovington United Methodist Church, Lovington, 50 year member of the
Lovington Masonic Lodge #228, Lovington American Legion Post #429.
He married Imogene Sharpe and she preceded him in death in 1997.

Survivors includes daughter; Sondra Hoffman and husband Kent of
Lovington, sister; Maxine Summers of Sullivan, special friend; Rocky
Marquis of Lovington; 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 1 daughter, 2 brothers, & 1 sister.

Electa Marie Williams

Electa Marie Williams, 82, of Kansas went to join her Lord at 10:45 a.m.
Wednesday (10/17/01) at Regional Hospital, Terre Haute, Indiana. She was
a retired schoolteacher.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday (10/22) at Kansas
Christian Church. Burial will follow in Harmony Cemetery. Friends may
call 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Kansas Christian Church. Sutton & Son Funeral
Home of Kansas is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Williams was born March 9, 1919 at Kansas, the daughter of James
Wilbur and Winona Honnold Honn. She married Kenneth Williams June
29, 1946 at Kansas, He preceded her in death February 26, 1939.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Williams and his wife Donna of Kansas, IL;
two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Kenda) Bond of Washington, IL and Mrs. Leslie
(Linda) Freeman of Lake Toxaway, NC; 8 grandchildren, Kenric Bond &
wife Brooke, Seth Bond & wife Shelli, Chris Freeman, Scott Freeman,
Mark Williams, John Hupp & wife Heather, Loren Newkirk & wife Cindy,
and Christine Williams; and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by a brother, Gerald Honn.

Electa Williams' life was marked by a love for her family, for her church,
and for her Christian faith. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Education
from Eastern Illinois University in 1940, and had taught in the Newman,
Edwardsville and Kansas, schools. She was an active member of Kansas
Christian Church, where she had been a member of Christian Women's
Fellowship and Dorcas Women's Circle, as well as a youth group leader
and teacher of the "Jesus & Me" youth Bible study. She was also a
member of the D.A.R. of Paris and the Edgar County Farm Bureau.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Crisis Pregnancy Center of
Charleston, "a life-saving organization," in care of Sutton & Son Funeral
Home in Paris.

Marjorie Battleson

COLUMBUS, Ind. - Marjorie Beth Tame Battleson, 77, of Columbus,
Ind., died at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at her home.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Church of the Nazarene,
Mattoon, with the Rev. John Ruzich officiating. Burial will be in Dodge
Grove Cemetery, Mattoon. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until noon at the
church. The Vernon Jewell-Nick Rittman Funeral Home, Columbus, Ind.,
is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Morehead, Minn., the daughter of Perrin
R. Fritch and Marjorie Best Fritch. She married Ellwood "Dick" Tame in
1944; he died in 1979. She married Robert Battleson in 1984; he survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Steven Tame of Mattoon and Douglas
Tame of Bowling Green, Ohio; two stepsons, David Battleson of Greenville
and Dale Battleson of Omaha, Neb.; one daughter, Ramona McHenry of
Mattoon; one stepdaughter, Donna Yardy of Mahomet; one brother, Mark
Fritch of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Fern Keoppel of Boise, Idaho; and 15
grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, one brother and three sisters.

Mrs. Battleson was a high school and college speech and drama teacher.
She was a member of the Columbus Free Methodist Church and Stonecroft
Ministries in Charleston.

Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene in Mattoon.

Lester Craig

CASEY - Lester Craig, 58, of Casey, died at 10:40 a.m. Thursday (Oct.
18, 2001) at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Greenwell Funeral Home,
Martinsville, with the Rev. Marvin Oakley officiating. Burial will be in
Harmony Cemetery, Greenup. Visitation will be noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at
the funeral home.

He was born Sept. 6, 1943, in Martinsville, the son of W. Ralph and Edna
Louise (Mosher) Craig.

Survivors include five brothers, William and Ronnie Craig and Fred
Gernigian, all of Casey, David Meissner of Hoylton and Darrell Craig of
Tye, Texas; and eight sisters, Erma Kemper, Carolyn Keller and Mary
Phillippi, all of Greenup, Lula Lemar, Connie Sowers and Sandy Gansz, all
of Casey, Donna Phillippi of Vineta, Okla., and Debbie Folliff of Centralia.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Mr. Craig was a farm laborer.

Mollie Grim

ALBANY, Ohio - Mollie B. Grim, 90, of Albany, Ohio, died Wednesday
(Oct. 17, 2001) at Jenkins Memorial Health Facility in Wellston, Ohio.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Albany Church of God of
Prophecy with the Rev. Alfred Havens and the Rev. Scott Kifer officiating.
Burial will be in Temple Cemetery, Albany, Ohio. Visitation will be 6 to 9
p.m. today at the Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, Ohio.

She was born April 9, 1911, in Shady, W.Va., the daughter of Bartley and
Mary E. Berry Redden. She married John Otas Grim; he preceded her in
death.

Survivors include three sons, Truman Grim of Albany, Ohio (formerly of
Mattoon), James Phillip Grim of Batavia, Ohio, and Billy J. Grim of
Springfield, Ohio; three daughters, Anna Lee Goin of Munfordville, Ky.,
and Janet Williamson and Joan Martin, both of Albany; one sister, Opal
Cross of North Ft. Myers, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren;
41 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; three
great-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by one son, nine sisters, two brothers, two
grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Grim retired from Athens Mental Health Center. She was a member
of the Albany Church of God of Prophecy.

Kathryn Walker Robertson

CHARLESTON - Kathryn Carolyn Walker Robertson, of Charleston,
passed away at 7:18 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln
Health Center.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at the Wesley
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Beck officiating. Burial will be
in Hurricane Cemetery, south of Charleston. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m.
Friday at the Wesley United Methodist Church. The Caudill-King Funeral
Home is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born in Hutton Township, Coles County, the daughter of Walter
G. and Gertrude E. Moore Walker. She married James E. Robertson on
Sept. 17, 1936; he preceded her in death on July 8, 1970.

Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Robertson Brent of
Springfield; grandson, James W. and wife Kimberly A. Clark of Kirkwood,
Mo.; granddaughter, Emily Robertson Clark Allen and husband Mitchell D.
of St. Peters, Mo.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Robertson Clark in
1985.

Mrs. Robertson retired after a teaching career in English at Kansas High
School, Mattoon High School and Eastern Illinois University. She was a
member of the Charleston Wesley United Methodist Church, Stephen
Ministries, Chapter KO of the P.E.O sisterhood, Hurricane Cemetery
Board, Coles County Historical Society, EIU Foundation, Coles County
Soil and Water Conservation District and previously received Outstanding
Farmer Award.

Memorials may be made to the Charleston Wesley United Methodist
Church.

Goldie Sowers

GREENUP - Goldie Marie Sowers, 65, of Greenup, died at 5:45 p.m.
Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bishop Funeral Home,
Greenup, with Pastor Roger James officiating. Burial will be in the Jewett
Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral
home.

She was born March 21, 1936, in Greenup, the daughter of Howard and
Olive Mills Cisney. She married Burlin D. Sowers in 1951; he survives.

Other survivors include one son, Brad Sowers of Casey; one daughter, Kay
Markwell of Greenup; one sister, Rosemary Massey; four grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son and one sister.

Mrs. Sowers was a homemaker.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
