NEOGA - Mable L. Smith, 81, of Neoga, formerly of Champaign and Urbana, died at 12:12 p.m. Monday (Nov. 5, 2001) at Provena Covenant Medical Center.
Funeral services will be noon Thursday at the Mittendorf-Calvert Funeral Home, Champaign, with Pastor Joey A. Condon officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born March 12, 1920, in Champaign, the daughter of John Edward and LueEtta McAnich Stiebner. She married Francis A. Smith in 1960; he survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Phebus of Urbana and Marlene Gossard of Mattoon; two sisters, Jessie Schlorff of Rantoul and Helen Cook of Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one stepson and one brother.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the St. Peters Evangelical Church in Champaign, VFW 630 Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary in Urbana.
Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross or to the American Heart Association.
Phyllis Still
ARCOLA - Phyllis Still, 75, of Arcola, died at 3:55 p.m. Monday (Nov. 5, 2001) at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis.

Katherine Marie Sydenstricker
Katherine Marie Sydenstricker, 80, of Mattoon, died at 4:30 a.m. Monday at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001 at the Epperson Funeral Chapel, with Father Ralph Zetzel officiating. Burial will be in Janesville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until time of service Wednesday.
She was born April 23, 1921, in Mattoon, she was the daughter of Abednago J. and Lenora Howard. She married Donald Sydenstricker. She is survived by one son, Benny Dent and his wife Linda of Mattoon; five grandchildren, Lynn Rawlings and her husband Roger, Chris Dent and his wife Marsha, David Dent and his wife Lynn, and Sherri Towle and her husband Shawn all of Mattoon; nine great-grandchildren, Kiersten Dent, Amanda Dent, Dalton Dent, Ericka Gregory, Kurtis Gregory, Madison Dent, Amanda Dent, Dalton Dent, Ericka Gregory, Kurtis Gregory, Madison Dent, Tiara Towle, Taylor Towle, and Haley Towle all of Mattoon; two nephews, Samuel Howard Jr. and his wife Karen of Normal and Barry Oliver and his wife Karen of California; one sister-in-law, Kathy Howard of Shermon. Her husband, Donald Sydenstricker; one daughter, Kay Frances Boroom; one brother, Sam Howard; two sisters, Frances Roberson and Pauline Howard preceded her in death.
Katherine owned and operated Westinghouse Laundry Mat in Mattoon for over seven years. She liked to do crafts and loved to play bingo, Katherine had a great love for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the VFW 4325 Women's Auxiliary, the Royal Neighbors, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union. LOUISVILLE, KY. - Eric Blunschi, 48, of Louisville, Ky., died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday (Nov. 4, 2001) at Norton Health Care Pavilion in Louisville, Ky.

Wilma Burkett
MARTINSVILLE - Wilma Burkett, 72, of Martinsville, died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Greenwell Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev. Glenn Arbuckle officiating. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery in Clark Center. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
She was born March 26, 1929, in Auburn Township, the daughter of John C. and Beulah Hutchens Thompson. She married Charles Burkett in 1948. He survives.
Also surviving are one son, Richard Burkett of Florida; two daughters, Carolyn Murphy of Casey and Beverly Sowinski of Park Ridge; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and two infant daughters.
Mrs. Burkett was a homemaker.

Nina Hennigh
WINDSOR - Nina Marie Hennigh, 95, of Windsor, died at 6:42 p.m. Friday (Nov. 2, 2001) at Heartland Christian Village in Neoga.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home in Windsor with the Rev. Lana Robyne officiating. Burial will be in Windsor Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home on Monday.
She was born Feb. 11, 1906, in Shelby County, the daughter of James Ora and Lou Amy Bundy Bence. She married R. Hal Hennigh in 1923. He died in 1985.
Surviving are three daughters, Betty Carr and Joy Caspary, both of Windsor and Mary Lou Rihl of Plain City, Ohio; one sister, Neva Robertson of St. Louis, Mo.; and eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister.
Mrs. Hennigh was a member of the United Methodist Church in Windsor and the Shelby County Home Extension.

John Hilgenberg
John Henry Stanley Hilgenberg, 84, of Arcola, retired farmer, died at 12:20 PM Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001 at Provena Covenant Hospital in Urbana.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 AM Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001 at the Arcola United Methodist Church, 121 S. Locust Street, Arcola with Rev. Margaret Misal as officiant. Burial will be in the Arthur Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30 PM-8:3O PM Monday at Shrader Funeral Home, 204 N. Locust Street, Arcola.
Mr. Hilgenberg was born May 16, 1917 in Berea, Kentucky, a son of Henry and Mary Elizabeth Johnson Hilgenberg. He married Honoure Spinks in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 11, 1943; she preceded him in death on Sept. 15, 1996.
He is survived by one son, H. Michael Hilgenberg and his wife Cheryl of Arthur; son-in-law, James Tapen of Carrollton; four grandchildren, Michael Tapen of Campbell, California, Jennifer Tapen of St. Louis, Missouri, Gregory Hilgenberg of Wapella, and Kara Hilgenberg of Urbana; 2 sisters, Juanita Dallmier and her husband Gene, and Alberta Brehm both of Arcola. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Honoure; his daughter, Honoure Tapen; and brother, Jennings Hilgenberg.
Mr. Hilgenberg graduated from Arcola High School in 1936 and played on several undefeated football teams.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for nine years. He was a decorated veteran having served various assignments during World War II, including defending the attack on Pearl Harbor, the landing on Guadacanal, Wake Island, and action on the Solomon Islands. He was awarded military honors including two Presidential Citations for heroism.
In 1946, he and his wife moved from California to the Chesterville area and joined in farming the family farm. He was an active member of the community, serving 3 terms on the Arcola School Board, and was an active member of the Arcola United Methodist Church. He served on several boards and committees, was a Sunday School teacher, and charter member and past president of the United Methodist Men.
John was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed by all.

Denise Ann Macklin
Denise Ann Macklin, 41, of Mattoon, died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, November 4, 2001 in Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in Broadway Christian Church, 1205 S. 9th, Mattoon with Reverend Marvin Flowers and Jim Dona officiating. Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Strasburg. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery, Strasburg. Memorials may be given to Broadway Christian Church, Mattoon or Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Denise was born on July 14, 1960 in Shelbyville, the daughter of John Francis and Rosabelle Rosine Mathis. She was a graduate of Stewardson-Strasburg High School, Class of 1978 and a member of the Broadway Christian Church, Mattoon. She was a storeroom clerk at Blaw-Knox Construction Equipment Company in Mattoon, where she began working in August 1978. She married Rob Macklin on September 20, 1993.
Surviving are her husband, Rob; daughter, Paige Mariah Kemme at home; three brothers, Stanley Mathis and wife Cindy of Shumway, Bradley Mathis and wife Tami of Strasburg and Kevin Mathis and wife Lori of Strasburg three nephews, Mark Mathis, Wade Mathis and Logan Mathis, her Godson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mike and Pat Macklin of Shelbyville; and special friend Kathy Mills of Monticello.

Mariam Elizabeth Sanders, age 84, of Mattoon, passed away at 4:12 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2001, at the Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.
Funeral services celebrating her life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. E. E. Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Mariam was born November 11, 1916, at rural Greenup, a daughter of John Welcome and Pearl Grace (Shaefer) Cutright. She married Woodrow Wilson Sanders on June 25, 1940 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Survivors include her husband of sixty-one years, Woodrow W. Sanders of Mattoon; two daughters, Nancy Lee Smith and husband Ed and Joan Elizabeth Clark and husband Gene, all of Mattoon; one son, Tom Sanders and wife Jody of Forsyth; grandchildren, Bryan and Nancy Smith of Tuscola, Greg and Laura Smith of Mattoon, Todd and Stephanie Smith of Mattoon, Beth and Tom Hassler of Woodlawn, Christy and Brad Gary of Alpharetta, Georgia, Chad and Amy Clark of Mattoon, Dr. Jeff and Elaine Sanders of Carson City, Nevada, Nikki and Troy Benavides of Coppell, Texas; great-grandchildren, Jonah Smith, Zachary Smith, Taylor and Summerlyn Smith, Emily, Katie, Adam and Abby Hassler, Clark and Jacob Gary, Jackson and Ellie Clark and Kylie Benavides; two sisters, Evelyn Pridemore and Aleen Rennels, both of Mattoon; two brothers, John Lee Cutright of Casey and Larry Cutright of rural Greenup.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Mrs. Sanders was a member of the First Baptist Church for over fifty years, where she taught Sunday School for many years and serving as Sunday School Superintendent during the 50#, s. She was on the Board of Trustees, served as Deaconess, chaired many social functions at the church and was instrumental in organizing Vacation Bible School and she was also active in the church circles. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, served as an officer of the P.T.A. at Lowell School and was Brownie and Girl Scout leader for many years.
Mrs. Sanders worked for many years at the candy counter at Kresge#,s where many of the kids in Mattoon affectionately called her "mom". She later served as assistant manager.
She loved her family and her grandkids and great-grandkids were the apple of her eye. She instilled in all of them her deep Christian values. Everyone who knew her loved her sense of humor and the way they were always greeted by her friendly smile.
She enjoyed working on her Golden Pond, gardening and baseball. She was a die-hard Cub fan for many years. She will be missed by her family and her many friends in Mattoon.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial gifts be made to Tourette Syndrome Association or Meniere's Disease.
Clyde Staley
CASEY - Clyde E. Staley, 86, of Casey, died at 11:20 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 3, 2001) at Heartland Manor in Casey.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Markwell & Son Funeral Home in Casey with the Rev. Marvin Oakley, Rev. Tom Marsh and Dr. Mark Kale officiating. Burial will be in Washington Street Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
He was born Oct. 2, 1915, in Casey, the son of Thomas Clayton and Anna Mae Lee Staley. He married Evelyn June Conel in 1937. She died in 1997.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Paddock of Lawrenceville and Joanne Cochonour of Casey; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Mr. Staley was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church, Chamber of Commerce, Masonic Lodge No. 442 and Rotary Club, all of Casey.
