Christopher Terry Kannewurf, 20, of Columbia died March 3, 2008 at his home. He was born Sept. 23, 1987. Survivors include his parents Ron (Elana) Kannewurf of Dupo and Mary (friend Allen Kemp) Kannewurf nee Ladyman of Dupo; brothers Kevin Kannewurf and Anthony Williams; a sister, Kelly (John) Hayes; grandmother, Catherine Ladyman; and grandfather, Harvard Range; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Roy Ladyman; grandmother, Mildred Range; and grandfather, Elmer Kannewurf. He was a union carpenter with Guaranteed Interiors and a member of Carpenters Local 47. Visitation and funeral were at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo, the Rev. Matt Friz officiating. Burial was at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James Schulein, 68, of Belleville, died March 2, 2008, in St. Louis, Mo. He was born March 7, 1939, in Evansville, the son of the late Cletus and Mary Schulein nee Petry. Mr. Schulein is survived by his siblings Robert Schulein of Ellis Grove, Paul (Marie) Schulein of Evansville, Tom Schulein of Evansville, Frances Chapman of Ruma and Ronald “Pete” (Cathy) Schulein of Evansville; sister-in-law Charlotte Schulein of Baldwin; and special friends Lisa (Jim) Leonard of Prairie du Rocher, Fran (Tim) Durbin of Prairie du Rocher, Nancy (Bryan) Bergmann of Columbia, and Tim (Michelle) Burns of Fults; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Elroy (Ellamae) Schulein, Lloyd Schulein and Edward (Pearl) Schulein; and sister Ernestine Schulein. Mr. Schulein was a U.S. Army veteran and was employed as an operating engineer for Local 520 in Granite City for 38 years. He was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church in Walsh, American Legion Post 622 in Prairie du Rocher and VFW 2698 in Sparta. Visitation was at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral was at St. Pius Catholic Church in Walsh, Fr. John Joyce officiating. A military graveside service under the direction of American Legion Post 622 was held at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony’s Hospice Development.

Doris Rodenberg, 76, of Prairie du Rocher, died March 4, 2008, in Red Bud. She was born Jan. 24, 1932, in Belgique, Mo., the daughter of the late Frank and Estell Mattingly nee Evans. She married Delbert Rodenberg in 1953. Mrs. Rodenberg is survived by her husband; children Darrell Rodenberg of Prairie du Rocher, Debbie (Bob) Schilling of Valmeyer, Donna (Steven) Yeater of Waukegan, and Denise Rodenberg of Prairie du Rocher; grandchildren Eric Rodenberg, Joshua Rodenberg, Wendy Schilling, Tiffany Signaio and Steven Yeager; four great-grandchildren; and brother Dale (Charlotte) Mattingly. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers. Mrs. Rodenberg was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairie du Rocher. She worked at AFCO / Singer and then the laundry department at the Ruma Convent for more than 10 years. She was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

James Wenkel, 49, of Columbia, died March 5, 2005, at his residence following a long battle with cancer. He was born January 23, 1959, in Belleville, the son of Kenneth and Delores Wenkel nee Tebbenhoff of Columbia, who survive him. He married Peggyann Wenkel nee Grueninger in 1998. Mr. Wenkel is survived by his parents; wife; daughter Kristen Rodriquez of Columbia; son Jason Rodriquez of Columbia; sister Janice (Gene) Blandford of Waterloo; and mother-in-law Evie Grueninger of Columbia; along with other relatives and friends. Mr. Wenkel was employed as a shipping supervisor with Ehrhardt Tool and Machine Co. of Granite City. He was an avid bowler and loved camping and the outdoors, not to mention a good game of Kloepper. A memorial Mass was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia, Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Magdalene Curtiss nee Granaman, 91, of Waterloo, died March 9, 2008, in Waterloo. She was born May 9, 1916, in St. Louis, the daughter of the late William and Dessie Granaman nee Brown. She was married to the late Arthur Curtiss. Mrs. Curtiss is survived by her daughter Kathy (Bob) Rubemeyer of Waterloo; granddaughter Karen (Bobby) Schultheis of Renault; great-granddaughters Kasey Schultheis and Deanna Schultheis; and sisters Hazel Huff and Esther Shelton, both of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and seven sisters. Mrs. Curtiss was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. She was a homemaker. Visitation and funeral service were at DeFabio Funeral Home, Pastor Will Hesterberg officiating. She was buried at Waterloo City Cemetery.

Tom “Tom Cat” Eickelman, 48, of Benton, died March 10, 2008, in Millstadt, of injuries sustained in a construction accident. He was born Jan. 31, 1960, in Christopher, the son of Francis “Eick” and JoAnn Eickelman nee Burtoft of Valier. He married Kathy Eickelman nee Kelley in 1983. Mr. Eickelman is survived by his parents; wife; daughter Mandy (Ryan) McKee of Mt. Vernon; grandson Landon McKee of Mt. Vernon; brother Tim (Kindra) Eickelman of Benton; nephew Josh Eickelman of Benton; niece Jordan Eickelman of Benton; and father-in-law Dean Kelley of Benton. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Pete and Fay Burtoft; paternal grandparents Grover and Beulah Eickelman; and mother-in-law Shirley Kelley. Mr. Eickelman was a heave equipment operator for 20 years, and was employed by Midwest Excavating in Benton for the past 12 years. HE was a member of the International Operating Engineers Local 318, the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Illinois, Sesser-Goode Lodge No. 744, and was of the Methodist faith. He loved the outdoors and loved hunting with his “hunting family.” He was the Franklin County Ducks Unlimited president for five years, and he organized wildlife events and supported local wildlife organizations for many years. He also very much enjoyed his new Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He died trying to help a co-worker and friend. Visitation and a funeral service were at Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton, Pastor Mark Minor officiating. He is buried at Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Memorials may be made to the Tom Eickelman Memorial Fund, in the care of First Southern Bank, 301 E. Main St., Carbondale, IL 62812.

Edith M. Gerber nee Buettner, 86, of Fults, died March 10, 2008, in Waterloo. She was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Columbia, the daughter of the late George C. and Adele W. Buettner nee Schutt. She was married to the late Arnold Gerber. Mrs. Gerber is survived by her children Ronald R. Gerber of Waterloo, Patricia K. (Ronald H.) Unterseh of Fults, and Judy Ann (Michael W.) Huebner of Waterloo; grandchildren Melissa (finacee Jeffrey Schreder) Unterseh, Justin Unterseh, Angela (Steve) Ballhuasen, William A. Huebner and Nicholas Huebner; great-grandchildren Sidney Ballhausen, Joey Ballhausen, Carey Huebner, Baylee Huebner and step-great-grandchildren MacKenzie and Kolten Schreder; sisters Eileen Monday of Auxvasse, Mo., and Georgia Frierdich of Wartburg; brothers Franklin (Ruth) Buettner of Collinsville, and Richard (Marlene) Buettner of Wartburg; and sister-in-law Ada Mueller of Wartburg; in addition to nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Clemens Buettner and Russell Buettner, and great-granddaughter Taylor Huebner. Mrs. Gerber was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg, as well as Ladies Aid and LWML. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service was at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Pastor Stuart Rethwisch officiating. She is buried at Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery in Wartburg. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, LWML, Altar Guild or Camp Wartburg.

Windel M. Kult, 77, of Columbia, died March 10, 2008, in Belleville. He was born Dec. 10, 1930, in Ashley, the son of the late Ed Kult and Mary Lawhorn. He married Rose Kult nee Haun in 1955. Mr. Kult is survived by his wife; daughter Denise Dorner of St. Charles, Mo.; son Keith (Kim) Kult of Waterloo; grandchildren Paul Jordan, James Copenhagen, Tonsie Springer, John Ney, Katie Warren, Stefan Kult and Rebecca Kult; great-grandchildren Kaylee Fisk, Kennedy Jordan, Maddie Jordan and Angel Springer; and brother, Roger (Josephine) Kult of Mission, Tex. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Steven Kult, daughter Beverly Sue Ney, and sister Nadine Piotrowskie. Mr. Kult was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Columbia. He was also a member of Columbia American Legion Post 581 and he was a retired pipe fitter for Ameren / UE. Visitation and a funeral service were at Lawlor Funeral Home, Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. He is buried at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights. Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or St. Paul United Church of Christ in Columbia.

Clemens “Horn” Schlottmann Jr., 68, of Red Bud, died March 10, 2008, in Evansville. He was born Sept. 4, 1939, in Red Bud, the son of the late Clemens Sr. and Helen Schlotmann nee Kern. Mr. Schlottmann is survived by his daughter Kimberly (Jeff) Mueth of Hecker; grandchildren Jacob Mueth and Emma Mueth; brothers Joseph (Pamela) Schlotmann of Red Bud, Henry (Barbara Jean) Schlotmann of Maeystown, and Alfred Schlotmann of Waterloo; sister Helen Marie (Jerome) Heusohn of Waterloo; and former wife Bonnie Schlotmann of Waterloo; along with nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John Schlotmann. Mr. Schlottmann was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud. He was a farmer and avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Randolph County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Waterloo Sportsman’s Club. Visitation was at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral was at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud, Fr. Tom Stout officiating. He was buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to ASC Memorial Fund for the Retirement of Sisters.

Ronny G. Yankey, 38, of Ellis Grove, died March 10, 2008, in Millstadt, of injuries sustained in a construction accident. He was born May 21, 1969, in Chester, the son of the late Shirley Ray “Peck” and June Yankey nee Mehrtens. He married Mendy Yankey nee Van Ausdoll in 1993. Mr. Yankey is survived by his wife; daughter Taylor Yankey of Ellis Grove; brothers and sisters Robert (Cheryl) Yankey of Chapel Hill, Tenn., Joyce (Larry) Surman of Chester, Kathy (Jeff) Baker of Prairie du Rocher, Mike (Shari) Yankey of Ellis Grove, Bonny (Bill) Branson of Fenton, Mo., Tammy (Steve) Renner of Chester, Teri (Jerry) Davitz of Ellis Grove, and Chrissy (Roger) Melliere of Prairie du Rocher; father-in-law David Van Ausdoll of Willisville; brothers- and sisters-in-law Roscoe and Julie Van Ausdoll of Warrensburg, Mo., Christina and Eric Weber of Baldwin City, Kan., Cheryl and Marc Kuhlman of Campbell Hill, Timothy and Crystal Van Ausdoll of Easley, S.C., and Julie and Greg Rathert of Ava. He was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law Marcia Van Ausdoll. Mr. Yankey was employed by Midwest Excavating in Benton. He was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 160 in Murphysboro. He was of the Lutheran faith. His greatest love was his family, whom he always put first. Visitation and a funeral service were at Pechacek-McClure Funeral Home in Chester, Rev. Edwin Reuter officiating. He is buried at Ellis Grove City Cemetery in Ellis Grove. Memorials may be made to a college fund for his daughter, Taylor, in the care of The Taylor Yankey Benefit Fund, The Bank of Carbondale, 900 Walnut St., Murphysboro, IL 62966.
