Guy Standerfer

DECATUR - Guy Edward Standerfer, 84, of Decatur, formerly of Sullivan, died at 2:55 a.m. Monday (June 3, 2002) in Manor Care Nursing Home, Decatur.
A private family graveside service will be conducted at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Bethany. No visitation. The McMullin-Young Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born July 7, 1917, in Sullivan, the son of Levi and Lavina Darst Standerfer.
Survivors include a son, Harley Standerfer of St. Louis; daughters, Ruth Wallace of Decatur, Vina Jean Gaiter of Frankfort, Mo., Pat Nelson of Waukegan, Laura Rodrigues of Victoria, Texas, Carlene Johnson of Wisconsin; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, one sister and one brother.
Mr. Standerfer was a veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict.
Memorials may be made to Rock Springs Church of God, Decatur.

Janice Bess

CHARLESTON - Janice Bess, 59, of Charleston, formerly of Effingham, died at 10:51 p.m. Monday (June 3, 2002) at Prairie View Care Center.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the Caudill-King Funeral Home.
She was born July 4, 1942, a daughter of Claude and Ruth Fraley.
Other survivors include one son, Jeremy Bess; and one brother, Marvin Fraley.
Mrs. Bess was a secretary.

Darrell Switzer

MODE - Darrell D. Switzer, 79, of Mode died at 8:20 p.m. Monday (June 3, 2002) at Effingham Health and Rehabilitation Center.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Stewardson with the Rev. Robert S. Davis officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Stewardson Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Howe and Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville.
He was born July 18, 1922, in Mode, the son of Don D. and Amanda E. Slifer Switzer.
Survivors include brothers, Doyle Switzer of Kansas and Nohl Switzer of Shelbyville; sisters, Donna Steineman of Stewardson and Sue Jakubowski of Clinton Township, Mich.
Mr. Switzer was a former manager and part owner of Stewardson Builders Supply, retiring after 40 years. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Lions Club, and American Legion Post 611, all of Stewardson, and the VFW Post 4829 of Shelbyville. He was an Air Force veteran of WW II.
Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church or donor's choice.

Effie Morris

SULLIVAN - Effie E. Morris, 96, of Sullivan, passed away at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday (June 4, 2002) in Eastview Terrace Nursing Home, Sullivan.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan, with Pastor Dave Dolan officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Marrowbone Township Cemetery, Bethany. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church of Bethany, New Life Tabernacle Church of Sullivan or Eastview Terrace Nursing Home, Sullivan.
Mrs. Morris was born September 27, 1905, in Orange County, Paoli, Indiana the daughter of Orville and Mary Ellen Underwood Lashbrook. She married William D. Morris on October 30, 1924 and he preceded her in death on December 7, 1947.
Mrs. Morris became a member of the Ames Chapel Methodist Church at Abbeydale, Indiana as a teenager. Later in life she was a member of the First Christian Church in Bethany, and attended the New Life Tabernacle Church, Sullivan. Mrs. Morris was an avid reader and loved poetry and could still recite many poems from her childhood. She retired from Brown Shoe Company of Sullivan.
Surviving are her daughters, Mary Margaret Dolan and her husband Stanley of Sullivan, Emma Louise Primmer and her husband Robert of Findlay, Jeanette Cochran and her husband Leon of New Bern, North Carolina, Genell Keown of Anderson, IN; son, William J. Morris and his wife Erna of Colorado Springs, Colorado; brother, Clifford Lashbrook of Petersburg, IN; grandchildren, David (Debra) Dolan of Sullivan, Daniel (Coral) Dolan of Herrick, Robert Dolan of Houston, Texas, Marc (Sara) Primmer of Moweaqua, Patty (Randy) Evans of Indianapolis, IN., Scott (Martha) Primmer of Cerro Gordo, Susan (Danny) Boehm of Shelbyville, Allen (Linda) Primmer of Bethany, William K. Morris of Texas, Sonja Morris of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Peggy Cochran of Broadalbin, New York, Julie Cochran of Westport, Connecticut, Tim (Donna) Keown of Downers Grove, Kimberly Keown of Archbald, Pennsylvania and Christopher Keown of Noblesville, IN. She also leaves 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister.

Mildred Bumpus

WEST UNION - Mildred E. Bumpus, 95, of rural West Union, formerly of Coles County, died at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday (June 4, 2002) at Burnside Nursing Home in Marshall.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union, with Pastor Doug Elmore officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Prairie Cemetery, northeast of West Union. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today and from 7 a.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
She was born Sept. 2, 1906, in Coles County, a daughter of Ed and Minnie Mohlenhoff Niemeyer. She married Neal Bumpus in 1930; he survives.
Other survivors include one son, Richard Bumpus of rural West Union; three daughters, Dorothea Wernz of rural West Union, Kathryn Walsh of Dallas, Texas, and Jean Buckner of Farmersburg, Ind.; one sister, Marion Young of Mattoon; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, one grandchild, one brother and one sister.
Mrs. Bumpus was a homemaker. She was a member of the Brick United Methodist Church, the Brick Home Extension Unit and served as a 4-H leader for several years.
Memorials may be made to the Walnut Prairie Cemetery.

Joyce Dubes

LOAMI - Joyce Dubes, 75, of Loami, formerly of Mattoon, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (June 4, 2002) at Lyncrest Manor in Auburn.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the McCullough-Delaney Funeral Home in New Berlin, with the Rev. Donald Peck officiating. Burial will be in Sulpher Springs in Loami. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
She was born Sept. 13, 1926, in Tower Hill, the daughter of Ray F. and Delores James Guinnee. She married Donald B. Dubes Sr. in 1948; he survives.
Other survivors include a son, Donald B. Dubes Jr. of Loami; and one grandchild.
Mrs. Dubes had worked at Hayes Freight Lines in Mattoon and Horace Mann Insurance Company in Springfield. She was a member of the Loami United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star Lilla Chapter 337, American Legion Post 743 Auxiliary of New Berlin and the Illinois Association of Home and Community Education.
Memorials may be made to the Loami United Methodist Church of Loami Emergency Squad.

Lyla Mateer

ARTHUR - Lyla H. Cookson Mateer, 88, of Arthur, died at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday (June 5, 2002) at the Arthur Home.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Arthur Cemetery with Rev. Michael Johnson officiating. No visitation. Shrader Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born Feb. 1, 1914, in Dickens, Iowa, a daughter of William and Margaret Capstick Beams. She married Virgil Cookson in 1932. She later married Clarence Mateer in 1962; he died in 1978.
Survivors include three sons, William Cookson of Tacoma, Wash., Kenneth Cookson of Tucson, Ariz., and Edward Dean Cookson of Arthur; one stepson, Chuck Mateer of Atwood; one brother, William Beams of Spencer, Iowa; three sisters, Maxine Guston of Royal, Iowa, Lily Forest of Golden, Colo., Elaine Spears of Spencer, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one grandchild.
Mrs. Mateer retired from Progress Industries as a seamstress in the casket division in 1979. She was a member of the Arthur United Methodist Church.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Loretta Moore

CHARLESTON - Loretta J. Moore, 69, of Charleston, died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday (June 5, 2002) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home.

Mary Sheehan

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Mrs. Mary L. Sheehan, 59, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Sigel, Ill., died at 3 p.m. Tuesday June 4, 2002, at Methodist North Hospital, Memphis Tenn.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday June 8, 2002 at St. Michael, The Archangel Church in Sigel, with Father Robert DeGrand of Sigel and Sr. Pat Thies of Neoga, Ill., officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery in Sigel. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday June 7, 2002, with a wake service at 7:00 p.m. at the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga.
She was born September 26, 1942 in Shelby County, Illinois the daughter of Carl and Elizabeth Gerbel Kaufman. She married Albert Stodden in 1964. She later married Sam M. Sheehan in June 22, 1985 in Sigel, Ill.
Survivors include her husband, Sam M. Sheehan of Memphis, Tenn.; sons, Joe Stodden and wife Linda of Sigel, Ill., Warren Stodden and wife Denise of Bartlett, Tenn., Stan Stodden and wife Deni of Memphis, Tenn.; brothers, Raymond Kaufman and wife Marge of Sigel, Ill., Louis Kaufman and wife Maxine of Stewardson, Ill. and Donald Kaufman of Sigel, Ill.; sisters, Dorothy Kinkelaar and husband Norman of Effingham, Ill., and Carolyn Hackman and husband Joe of Shumway, Ill.; nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Shirley Vogt.
Mrs. Sheehan was a former cook for 23 years at the Trailways Restaurant in Effingham, she also cooked for 6 years in Memphis and was a cook in the Memphis City School. She was a member of the Church of the Ascension in Memphis, Tenn., a former member of St. Michael, the Archangel Church, in Sigel, and the Extension Ladies Guild in Memphis, Tenn.
Memorials may be made to the donors choice.

Florence Anderson

HAMMOND, Ind. - Florence A. Anderson, 79, of Hammond, Ind., formerly of West York, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday (June 5, 2002) at Community Hospital in Munster, Ind.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union. Burial will be in Bradbury Cemetery, east of West York. Visitation will be 1 p.m. until service time on Sunday.
She was born March 31, 1923, in East Chicago, Ind., the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Gallas Zandy. She was married to Dee Anderson for 52 years; he died in 2000.
Survivors include: one son, Robert Farnsworth of Las Vegas, Nev., and several relatives, including a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, from the Terre Haute and West Union area.
She was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
Mrs. Anderson had worked as an accountant for U.S. Steel, Hammond Valve, Standard Oil, IDC Services of Chicago and the State of Illinois.
She also was a sign language interpreter at the Woodmar United Methodist Church for many years.
