Edna Marie Hughes

Mrs. Edna Marie Hughes, 75, of Tunnel Hill, died at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis.
She was born July 11, 1924, in Foreman, daughter of the late Guy and Nellie (Vaughn) Goddard.
She married Everett S. Hughes on June 28, 1940, in Charleston, Mo.
He preceded her in death Oct. 4, 1999.
Surviving are a daughter, Vickie Barger and her husband, Jack of Tunnel Hill; two granddaughters, Sheila Jennings and her husband, Victor and Jacquie Barger; two great-grandsons, Matthew and Jacob Jennings; five sisters, Evelyn Ross of Tunnel Hill, Demarris Payne of Vienna, Joan Boner of Matteson, Mary Hale of Augusta, Ga., and Nancy Tite of Ozark; and a brother, George Goddard of Karnak.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Bret Barger and a brother, Samuel Goddard.
Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker.
She was employed as a key punch operator by Sears in Chicago.
She was a member of the Intercontinental Church of God congregation in Vienna.
She was devoted to her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her great-grandsons.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2000, at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Elder Wendell Yeary will officiate.
Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, near the Delwood community in Pope County.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Saturday at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.

Charles R. Gwaltney

Charles R. Gwaltney, 68, 916 Webber St., Eldorado, died at 3 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2000, at his home.
He was born April 16, 1932, in Illinois, to the late Ishmael and Lucille (Barton) Gwaltney.
Mr. Gwaltney was a mechanic, employed by International Harvester.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Eagles Lodge and American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Alice Gwaltney; a son, Traci Gwaltney of Chester; four daughters, Mrs. Dean (Charlene) Wiseman of Raleigh, Tammy Gwaltney, Mrs. Kevin (Kim) Brummett, and Robin Gwaltney; two brothers, Eddie Joe Gwaltney and Junior Gwaltney, both of Eldorado; a sister, Leona Burgess of Flora; and five grandchildren, Kevin Gwaltney, Christy Wiseman, Shadrach Wiseman, Brooke Wagner, and Blake Gwaltney.
He was also preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 5, 2000, at Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado, where friends may call Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.
The Rev. Bill Jones will officiate.
Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery at Equality.

Gladys Lorene Hicks

Gladys Lorene Hicks, 92, of 628 Largent St., Harrisburg, died Friday, June, 2, 2000, at her home.
She was born to the late Alonzo and Nellie Abney in Mauldin, Mo.
She married Cranville "Jeff" Hicks, who preceded her in death.
Surving are a son, Melvin and wife, Rhonda Hicks of Salem; three daughters, Phyllis and husband, Charles Gray of Sanford, Judy and husband, Bill Horning of Harrisburg, and Venita Tanner of Harrisburg; a brother, Cecil Abney of Harrisburg; a sister-in-law, Wanda Abney of Harrisburg; and a sister, Louise Richardson of Sesser.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Hicks and Cloo Hicks; four brothers, Clyde Abney, Marion Abney, Orval Abney and William Abney; three sisters, Pansy Abney, Daisy Campbell and Pearl Moffitt; and a niece, Loveda Fearheiley.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday, June 5, 2000, a J.M. Weirauch Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg where friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Rev. Lyle Kulp and Rev. Paul Alumbaugh will officiate and burial will be at Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg.
For those who wish, memorials to the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.

Glen T. Underwood

Glen T. Underwood, 72, of Harrisburg, died 12:11 a.m. Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Harrisburg Medical Center.
He was born January 25, 1928, at Junction, to John and Leoma (Woods) Underwood.
He was a retired leadman and equipment operator for the coal-handling department at Southern Illinois Electric Co-op in Marion.
He married the former Delores J. Feazel July 28, 1957.
He was a Protestant by faith, and a US Army veteran of the Korean War.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, David Underwood and wife, Angi of Harrisburg; three granddaughters, Paige, Courtney and Lacee Underwood of Harrisburg; five brothers, James Underwood and wife, Sarah of Harrisburg, Neal Underwood and wife, Linda of Muddy, Carl Underwood and wife, Elizabeth of Harrisburg, Robert Underwood and wife, Helen of Ottawa and Ray Underwood and wife, Sue of Eldorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg.
Those who wish to attend are requested to gather at the cemetery.
The Rev. Paul Alumbaugh will officiate the service.
Memorials may be made to the Harrisburg Booster Club.

Treva Lynn Powles

Treva Lynn Powles, 36, of Eldorado, died 6:24 p.m. in Eldorado.
She was born September 13, 1963, in Eldorado, to Howard and Mary Albright Powles.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Jeff Powles and Stanley Ray Powles; two sisters, Betty Powles and Sandra Trebrack; and a stepfather, Herman Oller.
Graveside services are 1 p.m. Monday, June 12, 2000, at Beechwood Cemetery in Mounds with the Rev. Randy Grace officiating.

Walter W. Digby

Walter W. Digby, 84, of McLeansboro, died 11:10 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2000, at the Enfield Health Care Center.
He was born May 30, 1916, to Leroy and Eliza E. (Huffstutler) Digby.
He retired in 1976 after 33 years as an oil field pumper with Texaco, Inc.
He married Edith Jane Ledbetter March 13, 1939. She survives.
Mr. Digby was a Protestant by faith.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of McLeansboro American Legion, Carmi, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles Lodge No. 2699 and Broughton Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Walter Woodrow "Woody" Digby of Twin Lakes, Wisc. and Carl Digby and wife, Jeanne of McLeansboro; a daughter, Ellen Joanne Ferrell of Empire, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, David Ray Digby and a son, Leroy Digby.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Robert Sefried officating.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at Gholson Funeral Home.
Burial is in Digby Hill Cemetery in Dale with graveside military rites by American Legion Post No. 106.

Mercer Bernard

Mercer Bernard, 59, of Zion, formerly of Simpson, died at 6:20 a.m. Sunday, June 11, 2000 at Sheridan Health Care Center.
He was born March 23, 1941 in Simpson to Hillis "Pete" and Lena Marshall Bernard.
He is survived by one brother, Larry Bernard of Herrin, and two sisters, Marlene McSparin and Coleen Smith, both of Marion.
The body has been cremated.
Graveside services in Glendale Cemetery will be announced at a later date.
Aly Funeral Home in Eddyville is in charge of arrangements.

Luther W. Smith

Luther W. Smith, 87, of Creal Springs died at 3:09 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 2000 at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Further arrangements and family information are pending from Whitnel Funeral Home in Vienna.

James E. Shepherd

James E. Shepherd, 63, of 97 Magnolia St., Harrisburg, died at 11:01 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2000 at Barnes-Jewish Christian Hospital in St. Louis.
He was born Oct. 24, 1936 in Oaktown, Ind. to Paul M. and Ruth (Black) Shepherd.
He married Gayle King on May 7, 1955. She survives.
Mr. Shepherd was a mine manager for 13 years at AMAX Delta Mine and a maintenance manager for AMAX in Terra Haute, Ind.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Harrisburg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Terry Shepherd and wife, Mary of Chapmanville, W.Va., and Doug Shepherd and wife, Lisa Marie of Greenbelt, Md.; two daughters, Pam and husband, Rick Alecci of Harrisburg, and Lisa and husband, Randy Mitchell of Naperville; eight grandchildren, Andrea Shepherd, Beth Shepherd, Matthew Alecci, Julia Mitchell, Josh Shepherd, James Shepherd, Abby Alecci and Dylan Mitchell; a great-grandchild, Nicholas Crosby; two brothers, Paul Shepherd Jr. of Vincennes, Ind., Jerry Shepherd of Oaktown, Ind.; and a sister, Betty Stevens of Mesa, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Bob Shepherd.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 14 at the First Christian Church in Oaktown, with the Rev. Howard Scott officiating.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Gaskins Funeral Home in Harrisburg, and from 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Oaktown.
Burial is in Oaktown Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hope Lodge Center, 4207 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, Mo. 63108.

Lilly Bourland

Lilly Bourland, 92, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Harrisburg, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, June 11, 2000 at the home of her son, Larry Bourland.
She was born March 14, 1908 in Hardin County to William and May (Robinson) McDaniel.
She married Delaney G. Bourland on Dec. 25, 1928.
He preceded her in death Nov. 13, 1968.
Mrs. Bourland was a charter member of the Church of the Nazarene in Harrisburg.
She is survived by a son, Larry Bourland and wife, Shirley; three grandchildren, Douglas Bourland of Washington, David Bourland of New Jersey, and Bradley Bourland of Florida; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Nazarene in Harrisburg, with visitation from 1 p.m. until service time.
Burial is in Sunset Lawn Cemetery.
Gaskins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
