Robert Toal Sr., 69, of Waterloo, died March 23, 2008, in Creve Coeur, Mo. He was born July 15, 1938, in Alton, the son of the late Leo R. Sr. and Hildegarde Toal nee Brown. He was married to Toal nee Dietz. Mr. Toal is survived by his wife; children Robert "Larry" (Connie) Toal, Michael (Teresa) Toal, Stephen Toal and Cheryl (Steve) Oelklaus; grandchildren Courtney Yearian, Macy Griffin and Camille Toal, Jack Toal and Bryce Oelklaus; great-grandchildren Eli Dinges and Dalen Dinges; brother Jack (Ruth) Toal; and sisters-in-law Pat Toal and Imogene Toal; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Lee Toal and Don Toal. Mr. Toal was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo and the Holy Name Society. There was no visitation. A memorial Mass will be April 5, 10 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Church. Memorials may be made to the SS. Peter and Paul Grade School Building Fund or Gibault Catholic High School.
Michael J. Tolan, 65, of Waterloo, died March 23, 2008, in St. Louis. He was born May 25, 1942, in Belleville, the son of the late Joseph and Edna Tolan nee Quirin. Mr. Tolan was married to Karen Tolan nee Dowland. Mr. Tolan is survived by his son Scott (Cheryl) Tolan of Columbia; grandchildren Megan Tolan and Laruen Tolan; and brother John (Lori) Tolan of St. Louis; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Tolan was a member of the Millstadt Sportsman's Club and Millstadt Optimist Club. He was a former employee of Peerless Premier Stove Co. in Belleville. He enjoyed boating, hunting and spending time with his family and friends. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was at Immaculate Conception Church in Columbia, Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. He is buried at Valhalla Cemetery in Belleville. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
Richard Meier, 58, of rural Waterloo, died March 24, 2008, in St. Louis. He was born Jan. 17, 1950, in Red Bud, the son of the late Joseph Zoedell Meier nee Drees. He married JoAnn Meier nee Floerke in 1977. Mr. Meier is survived by his wife; children Nick (Beck) Meier of Waterloo and Mike Meier of Waterloo; granddaughter Gabriella Anne Meier; brother John (Marie) Meier of rural Waterloo; sister Don (Alice) Haslag of Bonnots Mill, Mo.; mother-in-law Sis Floerke; sister-in-law Susan Floerke; niece Cindie (Eric) Allscheid; nephew Chuck (Kim) Meier; grand-nieces and -nephews Miranda Meier, Matthew Meier, Cassie Allscheid and Krista Allscheid; and godchildren Jennifer Kohnz and Chad Everett. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Marcellus "Mac" Floerke, and nephew Tim Floerke. Mr. Meier was retired from Menard State Penitentiary in Chester and was a broker and owner of Meier Real Estate (The Meier Team), formerly RE/Max Prestige, in Waterloo and Columbia. He was a lifetime member and past commander of the Waterloo VFW, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Realtor Association of Southern Illinois and Illinois Association of Realtors. He was involved with the Battle of Ripcord, the last major battle of the Vietnam War. He was in A Battery 2/11th Artillery 4th section 155 Howitzer. He received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Cluster and other service awards. He was a member of the Ripcord Association, a group of Vietnam veterans who were on and around Fire Base Ripcord in 1970, which sustained one of the greatest losses of troops in the Vietnam War. The Ripcord Vets meet annually for a convention and other excursions to enjoy each other’s company and reminisce about their experiences. Pallbearers at the funeral were members of this organization. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home, where a VFW service was held. A funeral was held at the funeral home, Mike Andrews officiating. He is buried at Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery in Madonnaville. Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans or in the form of Masses.
Rosella Kelley nee Fahey, 82, of Waterloo, died March 25, in St. Louis. She was born July 5, 1925, in Red Bud, the daughter of the late Martin and Ellen Mary Fahey nee Gorman. She was married to James Kelley. Mrs. Kelley is survived by her husband; children Daniel Kelley of rural Red Bud, Eva (Roger) Schaefer of Columbia, Paul (Carol) Kelley of St. Louis, Richard (Celeste) Kelley of Waterloo, Gerald (Marie) Kelley of Waterloo, Janet (William) Schmitz of Waterloo, Kathleen (Eric) Bingham of Columbia, Teresa Polacek of Waterloo, Rose Kettler of Waterloo, Ellen (David, Sr.) Otten of rural Waterloo and Laura Kelley of Columbia; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Robert "Whop" Kelley; brothers Charles Fahey, Thomas Fahey and William Fahey; sister Catherine Fahey; and son-in-law Edward Polacek, Jr. Mrs. Kelley was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Tipton. She was an avid quilter. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tipton, Fr. Jose Jacob officiating. She is buried at the church's cemetery. Jacqueline C. Jozayt nee Eckert, 73, of Cahokia, formerly of Swansea, died March 27, 2008, in Belleville. She was born April 27, 1934, in Columbia, the daughter of the late Elmer J. Eckert and Sally Eckert nee Jung, who survives her. She was married to the late Stanley Jozayt. Mrs. Jozayt is survived by her mother; daughter Paula Marie (James) Maloney of Cahokia; step-children Donald R. (Susan) Jozayt and Pat A. Jozayt, all of Florida; step-grandchildren Debra A. Jozayt and Daniel W. Jozayt, both of Florida; brothers Kenneth E. (Peggy) Eckert of Seattle, Wash., and Joyce G. (Shirley) Eckert of Columbia; nephews Steve (Leslie) Eckert, Michael Eckert and Robert Eckert; good friend Sheri Ohlendorf; along with great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, husband, brother Walter C. Eckert, and sister Geraldine K. Marinko. Mrs. Jozayt was retired as a dining room hostess at Fairmont Park Race Track. She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose Chapter 53 of Swansea. Visitation and a funeral service were at were at Kassly Mortuary in Fairview Heights, with a Women of the Moose Ritual held. Ray Hornbostel, 71, of Forney, Texas, died March 29, 2008, at his residence. He was born Aug. 18, 1936, in Percy, the son of the late Albert Hornbostel and Virginia Hornbostel nee Willis of Columbia. He was married to Linda Hornbostel nee Filbey. Mr. Hornbostel is survived by his children Linda (George) Hand of Columbia, Cynthia (David) Hartin of Manassas, Va., Phillip (Belva) Hornbostel of Columbia, Richard (Lynette) Hornbostel of Branson, Mo., DuWaine (Dana) Hornbostel of Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Joseph Hornbostel of Las Vegas, Nev.; step-children Jeff (Carol) Hellige of Roanoke, Va., Scott (Lindsey) Hellige of Evans, Colo., and Sherri Hellige of Forney, Texas; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers George (Dixie) Hornbostel of Columbia and Paul Dean (Gail) Hornbostel of Caseyville; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and first wife, Delores Hornbostel nee Bievenue. Visitation is Wednesday, April 2, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home. Arlo F. Kohnz, 85, of Valmeyer, died March 30, 2008, in Des Peres, Mo. She was born July 9, 1922, in Valmeyer, the son of the late Martin Cecelia Kohnz nee Weber. He was married to Rose Ann Kohnz nee Muertz. Mr. Kohnz is survived by his wife; children Debra (Kevin) Lubbes of Valmeyer, and Sharon (Allen) May of Valmeyer; grandsons Ethan May, Avery Lubbes and Conner Lubbes; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Vernon Kohnz and Cletus Kohnz, sister Roseanne Wessel, brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law. Lucille Gray nee Bennett, 93, of Waterloo, died Feb. 3, 2008, in Waterloo. She was born July 14, 1914, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of the late James and Mary Bennett nee Franke. She was married to the late William Gray; he preceded her in death in 1994. Mrs. Gray is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Qusley of Longview, Texas; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and niece Mary Edith Sessler of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Mrs. Gray was a member of New Life Church in Waterloo. Elsie Oelzen nee Nottmeier, of St. Louis, Mo., 104, died Feb. 8, 2008. She was born July 27, 1903 in Fults, the daughter of the late Fred and Catherine (nee Nagel) Nottmeier. Survivors include children Laverne Schardan, Jean (Allen) Weber and Wayne Oelzen; daughter-in-law Janet Oelzen; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Nelda Allscheid; she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Oelzen; son, Henry Oelzen; daughter-in-law, Deanna Oelzen; and grandson, Randy Weber.
