Eugene H. Wheeler of McLeansboro, died at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 1996, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital.
He was a retired water and electrical plant operator for the city of McLeansboro.
Mr. Wheeler was born on September 21, 1910 in Evansville, Indiana, a son of Douglas and Minne (Farris) Wheeler.
He married Violet Russell, who preceded him in death.
He attended Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.
He was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II.
The funeral was at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 1996 at Gholson Funeral Home.
Rev. Robert Sefried officiated.
Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Graveside burial rites were by American Legion Post #106.
Mr. Wheeler is survived by one son, John Wheeler and wife Carol of Dow, Illinois; one daughter, Linda Dale and Husband Bruce of McLeansboro; four grandchildren, Tammy Sims, Dawn Wheeler, Clint Mosby, and Lukas Dale; and one great-grandchild, Devin Wheeler.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Lucy Marguerite Smith
Born August 4, 1916 - Died November 22, 1996
Lucy Marguerite Smith of Murphysboro and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, November 22, 1996, at Carbondale Health Center.
She was a housewife.
Mrs. Smith was born on August 4, 1916, in Dahlgren, a daughter of Roy Franklin and Nancy Clara (Voliva) Cross.
On May 29, 1936, she married Noel A. Smith, who preceded her in death in January 4, 1985.
The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 1996 at Gholson Funeral Home.
Rev. Mark Lee officiated.
Burial was in Ten Mile Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith is survived by seven sons, Ronald Lee Smith and wife Margaret of Brush, Colorado, William Robert Smith and wife Jean of McLeansboro, Thomas Eugene Smith and wife Vera of McLeansboro, Clyde Richard Smith of Toledo, Ohio, Dale Louis Smith and wife Evelyn of Chicago, Alan Smith and wife Becky of Hillsboro, Noel Smith Junior and wife Deanne of Murphysboro; one daughter, Mary Horn of Carmi; one brother, James Paul Cross of Vista, California; three sisters, Fern Jines of Forkland, Alabama, Ruby Kirkpatrick of Sun City, Arizona, and Wanda Winkelbauer of Sun City, Arizona; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Molly Lou Smith, sister Flossie Campbell, and brothers Frank and Robert Cross.
Everett E. Johnson
Born February 15, 1901 - Died November 22, 1996
Everett E. Johnson, 95, of McLeansboro, died at 9:45 p.m. on Friday, November 22th, 1996, at McLeansboro Health Care.
Mr. Allen retired in 1965 as a barber for the state.
He was a member of Corinth Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 1128 AF&AM, both in Macedonia.
Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Minton of Lake Charles, LA; a son, Walter H. of Hemet, California; two sisters, Goldie Miller of Benton and Dorothy Browning of Anderson, Indiana; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
His wife, Floy Pauline (Holt), died in 1989.
Services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 1996 at Harre Funeral Home, with burial in Macedonia Cemetery.
Beside his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one grandchild.
Carol A. Shasteen
Born September 26, 1938 - Died November 26, 1996
Carol A. Shasteen, 58, of McLeansboro, died at 7:03 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 1996, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado.
She was a homemaker.
She was born on September 26, 1938, in Oak Park, Illinois, a daughter of Fred and Bernice (Weiher) Myrtle.
On June 8, 1956, she married Cecil Shasteen in Cook County.
She was a member of Temple Missionary Baptist Church in McLeansboro.
The graveside service was 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 1996, at Smith Cemetery near Dale.
Revs. Carl Leek and Robert Sefried officiated.
Arrangements were by Harre Funeral Home.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Johnnie Shasteen of Cuba, Missouri, David Shasteen of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Darrell Shasteen of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Beverly Riley and husband Don of St. James, Missouri; four grandchildren, Keith, at home, and Andrea, Chip and Bonnie Riley of St. James; and one brother, James Myrtle of Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Dorthea "Dot" Richardson
Born September 18, 1901 - Died November 26, 1996
Dorthea "Dot" Richardson, 95, of Dahlgren, died at 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 1996, at Mt. Vernon Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was a retired school teacher, having taught in the one-room school systems near Dahlgren for several years.
She was born on September 18, 1901, a daughter of Cloyd and Inez (Linvell) Stull.
On August 5, 1923, she married Harry V. Richardson, who died on April 22, 1972.
The funeral was at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 1996, at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren.
Rev. Richard McCormick officiated.
Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She is survived by one son, Virgil Lee Richardson and wife Doris of Dahlgren; five grandchildren, Michael Richardson of Granell, Kansas, Ronald Lee, Gerald, Curtis and Clyde Richardson, all of Colorado Springs; a sister, Ruby Mitchell of Crossville, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Frank and Fred Stull.
Mary Elizabeth Webb

Mary Elizabeth Webb, 70, of McLeansboro, died at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 28, 1996, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital.
She was a secretary for the Hamilton County Home Extension.
She was born on September 14, 1926, in McLeansboro, a daughter of Will and Minnie (Metcalf) Stephens.
On February 1, 1947, in Morganfield, Kentucky, she married Kermit M. Webb, who survives.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of McLeansboro.
She was also a member of the McLeansboro Home Extension and Eastern Star Lodge #704.
The funeral was at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, 1996, at the First United Methodist Church.
Rev. Jeff Hurst officiated.
Burial was in IOOF Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Harre Funeral Home.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Paula Young and husband Bob of Carmi and Linda Gwaltney and husband Bill of Benton; a sister, Audrey Stephens Epperson of McLeansboro; a half-sister, Shirley Reyling Moss of McLeansboro; and four grandchildren, Paul Young of Evansville, Stephanie Young of Carmi, Bill Gwaltney, Jr. of Benton and Kent Gwaltney of Benton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
Clairetta Lasater

Clairetta Lasater, 78, of McLeansboro, died at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 30, 1996, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Lasater was born on December 30, 1917, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Frank and Florence (Aydt) Frey.
She married Wyatt W. Lasater, who preceded her in death. She was a member of St. Clement's Catholic Church in McLeansboro.
The funeral was at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 1996, at St. Clement's Catholic Church.
Fr. Alan Ruppert officiated.
Burial was in St. Clement's Church cemetery.
Arrangements were by Harre Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lasater is survived by three sons, Kenneth Lasater and wife Bobbin of McLeansboro, Robert Lasater and wife Beverly of Decatur, Dennis Lasater and wife Sharon of Willowpark, Texas; two daughters, Donna Arrivo and husband John of Noblesville, Indiana; and Catherine Lasater of Nashville, Tennessee; eigth grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one grandson and two sisters.

Ronald G. Storment

Ronald G. Storment, 59, of Elgin and formerly of Belle Rive, died at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, 1996, at St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.
He was a retired factory worker.
Mr. Storment was born on January 12, 1937, in Belle Rive, a son of Carl and Beulah (Gowler) Storment.
Mr. Storment served in the U. S. Army from 1959 to 1961.

Harold Dean Sullivan

Jane M. Bessen

Jane M. Bessen, 90, of McLeansboro, died at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 1996 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital.
She taught school in Monroe County, Illinois followed by many years at the old Piopolis School.
Mrs. Bessen was born on February 19, 1906, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Lawrence and Hallie (Kittinger) Smith.
She married Tom A. Bessen on December 13, 1941, in St. Charles, Missouri.
She was a past member of the McLeansboro Eastern Star and a member of the First Baptist Church of McLeansboro.
The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 6, 1996 at Harre Funeral Home.

Burial was in Veterans Memorial Park.
