Ethel Irene St. Clair, 75, of McLeansboro, died at 2:38 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 1997, at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia.
Mrs. St. Clair was born on February 12, 1921, in Great Bend, Kansas, a daughter of Henry and Martha (Gibbons) Wieter. She married Matthew W. St. Clair on August 26, 1940, in Lyons, Kansas. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Clement's Catholic Church.
The funeral was at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 1997, at Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem. Rev. Jon O'Guinn officiated. Burial was in Paradise Cemetery in Salem.
Mrs. St. Clair is survived by her husband, Matthew W. St. Clair; one son, Matthew T. St. Clair of Enfield; three daughters, Beverly Dalton and husband Ron of Hacker Heights, Texas, Bonnie George and husband Ron of Salem, Patricia Dianne Hall of McLeansboro; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters.
Herman "Buster" Trout
Born August 16, 1911 - Died January 28, 1997
Herman "Buster" Trout, 85, of Loogootee, Indiana, and formerly of Dale, died on January 28, 1997, at 8:00 a.m. at the Loogootee Nursing Center.
Mr. Trout was born in Dale on August 16, 1911, a son of Anderson and Harriet (Frazier) Trout. He married Ellen Spears, who preceded him in death a few years ago.
The funeral was January 31, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. at the Lee Funeral Home in Loogoottee.
Mr. Trout is survived by two daughters, Louise Weaver and Vera Sult of Indiana; two half-sisters, Iva Allen and Ida Fann of McLeansboro; several nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Billie; six sisters, Pheba Trout, Lucy Trout, Martha Cantrell, Elsie Wheeler, Tressie McPeak and Carrie Shaffer; and two brothers, Bobby Trout and Otto Trout, who died in infancy.
Melvin D. Little
Born December 2, 1919 - Died February 5, 1997
Melvin D. Little, 77, of McLeansboro, died at 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center.
Mr. Little was born on December 2, 1919, in Benton, a son of Willie and Viola (Maulding) Little. He married Mary Kathryn Hamilton on June 22, 1940, in St. Louis. She preceded him in death on September 9, 1990. He was a retired truck driver. Mr. Little was a veteran of World War II and a member of McLeansboro First Baptist Church.
The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 1997, at Gholson Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Parmley officiated. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro. Graveside military rites were given by American Legion Post #106.
Mr. Little is survived by one son, Douglas Little and wife Joyce of Ignacio, Colorado; one daughter, Melva Kay Duchaine and husband Dennis of Elizabethtown; and one brother, Harold Little of Palmer Lake, Colorado.
Beside his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, son William Eugene Little and one sister.
Mary C. (Haire) Campbell

Mary C. (Haire) Campbell, 82, of Sesser and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 12:26 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 1997 in Franklin Hospital in Benton.
Mrs. Campbell was born March 13, 1914, in Morgan County, Illinois, a daughter of Frank and Anna (Diss) Haire. She married James B. Campbell in 1986 in McLeansboro. She worked many years at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro and at White County Hospital in Carmi as a registered nurse. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sesser and a former member of of St. Clement's in McLeansboro.
The funeral mass was at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 1997, at St. Clement's Catholic Church in McLeansboro. Burial was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Mrs. Campbell is survived by her husband James B. Campbell.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Paul J. Haire and Everett Haire.
Rebecca J. Heimer

Rebecca J. Heimer, 41, of Enfield died at 2:52 a.m., on Saturday, February 8, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Mrs. Heimer was born on June 28, 1955, in Eldorado, a daughter of Charles Bowman and Wanda (Lee) Dennis. She married Marvin L. Heimer. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Union Congregational Christian Church.
The funeral was at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 10, 1997, at Blairsville Pleasant Union Congregational Christian Church. Burial was in Enfield Cemetery.
Mrs. Heimer is survived by her husband Marvin L. Heimer; father and step-mother, Charles and Linda Bowman of McLeansboro; mother and stepfather, Wanda and Morris Dennis of Enfield; two godchildren, Luke and Emily Williams of Carmi; three brothers and sisters-in-laws, Larry and Cathy Bowman of Springfield, Missouri, Gary and Toni Bowman of McLeansboro and Mike and Phyllis Bowman of McLeansboro; several aunt, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Sandra Kay Bowman, and her grandparents.
Norman B. Reed

Norman B. Reed, 70, of McLeansboro, died at 5:47 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 1997, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
Mr. Reed was born on May 13, 1926, in Hamilton County, a son of Noble and Jewell (Benbrook) Reed. He married Mabel McMahon on December 4, 1948. He was a retired mechanic. Mr. Reed was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Webb's Chapel Methodist Church.
The funeral was at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, 1997, at Gholson's Funeral Home. Revs. John Capps and Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery. Graveside military rites were given by American Legion Post #106.
Mr. Reed is survived by his wife Mabel Reed; two sons, Eugene Reed and wife Starla of Staunton, Craig Reed and wife Katina of Champaign; two daughters, Brenda Lynch and husband Donald of McLeansboro; one brother, Maxie Reed of McLeansboro; two sisters, Pauline Glenn of McLeansboro and Faye Sandusky of McLeansboro; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Larry Reed and brother Ralph Reed.
Charlotta L. Malchert

Charlotta L. Malchert, 46, of McLeansboro, died at 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 1997, at White County Skill Care in Carmi.
Miss Malchert was born on November 30, 1950, in Oak Park, Illinois, a daughter of Arthur F. and Ruth Louise (Maness) Malchert Sr. She was a homemaker.
The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 14, 1997, at Gholson Funeral Home. Rev. Frank Voorhess officiated. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Miss Malchert is survived by one brother, Arthur Malchert, Jr. and wife Phyllis of McLeansboro; two sisters, Kay Guenther and husband John of West Chicago and Sue Rieckenberg of Murphysboro; three nieces; one nephew; and one great-nephew.
Etta Sharp

Etta Sharp, of McLeansboro died at 2:09 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, 1997 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Sharp was born on August 14, 1901, in Peoria, a daughter of Henry F. and Ocktje (Seeba) Gerdes. She married Shelby Sharp on January 18, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1988. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Peoria.
Graveside services were at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 14, 1997, in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria. Rev. Mike Borcherding officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
Mrs. Sharp is survived by two nephews, Paul Gerdes and wife Elma of Peoria, Howard Gerdes and wife Janet of Edwardsville; three great-nephews, Steve Gerdes and wife Marsha Gerdes of St. Louis, Mark Gerdes and wife Karen of Springfield, Scott Gerdes and wife Teresa of Belleville; one great-niece, Janie Brunner and husband Randy of Hanover Park; great-great nieces and nephews, Libby and Patrick Brunner of Hanover Park, Kileen and Daniel Gerdes of Springfield and Aaron Gerdes of Belleville.
Martha Elizabeth Spegal

Martha Elizabeth Spegal, 86, of Eldorado and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 1997 at Fountain View Nursing Center in Eldorado.
Mrs. Spegal was born January 24, 1911, in Saline County, a daughter of Stephen Jefferson and Laura Elizabeth (Tadlock) Douglas. She was married twice, to Hyland Burnam in St. Joseph, Missouri, on April 10, 1943, and Enos Spegal in Cave-In-Rock on July 16, 1967. Both preceded her in death. Mrs. Spegal was a housewife. She was educated in Cave-In-Rock and was a member of the First General Baptist Church of McLeansboro.
The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 1997, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Rev. Ken Cook officiated. Burial was in Cavehill Masonic Cemetery in Cave-In-Rock.
Mrs. Spegal is survived by two sisters, Imogene Richeson of Alton and Helen Brittain of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and infant son and brothers Ulys "Pat" Douglas and C. B. "Bert" Douglas.
Hazel M. Nelson

Mrs. Nelson was born on December 15, 1909, in White County near Mill Shoals, a daughter of Ezra and Elva (Cantrell) Files. She was a housewife.
The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 1997 at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in Old Springer Cemetery.
Mrs. Nelson is survived by her husband, Ivan Nelson, two sons, Cecil Nelson and wife Helen of Mt. Zion, Kenneth Nelson and wife Bonnie of McLeansboro; one daughter, Linda McGill and husband Dennis of McLeansboro; one brother, Oscar Files of Dawson, Illinois; two sisters, Ester Muller of New Haven and Enna Pearl McCullough of Fairfield; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
