John J. Carle Sr., 78, of Columbia, died Feb. 9, 2008, at St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Louis, MO. He was born June 10, 1929 in Columbia, the son of the late John Carle and the late Dorothy Lemen. He was married to the late Linda Fay Wright in 1964 in New Hanover. She died in 2005. Survivors include sons John J. Carle, Jr. of Columbia and Michael R. (Julie) Carle of Prairie Du Rocher; daughter, Carole Ann (Del) Paris of Columbia; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Arthur (Jan) G. Carle of St. Louis, Mo.; sister, Margaret (Ron) A. Wallace of Belleville; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Carle. He was retired from Union Bank, East St. Louis. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Waterloo Sportsman’s Club and a member of American Legion Post 581 in Columbia. Visitation and funeral were at Lawlor Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert "Odie" Mathews, 53, of Hecker, died Feb. 10, 2008, at his residence. He was born Jan. 19, 1955, in East St. Louis, the son of Delores Mathews nee Campbell of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Dale Mathews of Waterloo, who survive. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Linda Mathews nee Wittenauer; children Angela (Todd) Eschmann of Waterloo and Robert Mathews (friend Lisa Braun) of Hecker; grandchildren Brenden "Peanut" Eschmann, Abby Eschmann and Samantha Eschmann; a father-in-law Delbert (Shirley) Wittenauer of Waterloo; sisters Linda (Keith) Lenox of St. Louis, Debbie (Jeff) Battin of Waterloo and Sandy (Doug) Akin of Waterloo; brothers Daniel Mathews of St. Louis, Dale Mathews of Waterloo and Mike Mathews of Waterloo; sisters-in-law Diane (Jerry) Mollet of Hecker, Pearl (Ronnie) Braun of Waterloo, Donna (Matt) Mensing of Beckemeyer, Debbie (Kenny) Osterhage of Waterloo and Lisa (Lonnie) Rehmer of Hecker; brothers-in-law Delbert (Sandy) Wittenauer and Gerard (Connie) Wittenauer, both of Waterloo; 31 nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. He was preceded in death by mother-in-law, Gladys Wittenauer; maternal grandparents Fred and Bernice (nee McGraw) Campbell; paternal grandparents Simon and Agnes (nee Schneider) Mathews; niece, Rachael Wittenauer; and nephews John Jennings and Kirk Osterhage. He was a vice-president of Laborer Local 196 of Waterloo, a past member of Hecker Volunteer Fire Department, Hecker Community Center, Hecker Sportsman Club and past president of the Monroe County Democrat Club. He was also a longtime fan of race car driver of Dale Ernhardt, Sr. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Hecker. Ardel Mueller nee Hoffmann, 87, of Fults, died Feb. 11, 2008, in St. Louis. She was born March 13, 1920, in Maeystown, the daughter of the late Edwin and Rose Hoffmann nee Lehman. She was married to the late Halbert “Ham” Mueller. Mrs. Mueller is survived by her children Ross (Dorothy) Mueller of Fults and Waleah (Lennis) Lich of Waterloo; grandchildren Dan Mueller (fiancé Saundra Weber), Dawn (Jason) Goff, Aaron (Jennifer) Lich, Allison (Timothy) Tronnes and Amanda Lich (fiancé Jason Kunash); great-grandchildren Abbey Goff, Drew Goff and Gavin Lich; siblings Lee (Grace) Hoffmann and Kay (Dennis) Ritzel; sisters-in-law Telka Schatte and Dorothy Hoffmann; and brother-in-law Warren Osterhage. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Kermit Hoffmann, sisters Dorothy Hoffman and Ada Osterhage, and brother-in-law Vernon Hoffman. Mrs. Mueller was a member of St. John United Church of Christ of Maeystown and the St. John's Women's Fellowship. A visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Ralph Frank Jr., 82, of Waterloo, died Feb. 13, 2008, in St. Louis. He was born Aug. 18, 1925, in Merrimac, the son of the late Ralph Sr. and Louise Frank nee Naumann. He was married to Pat Frank nee Cotton. Mr. Frank is survived by his wife; children Chris (JoAnn) Frank of Waterloo and Connie (Nino) Cammarata; grandchildren Sarah Frank, Alaina Wilson, Emily Wilson, Josh Frank, Nick Cammarata and Tony Cammarata; and sisters Beulah Bohnemeier and Edna "Sis" Arras. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Earl, Roy, Edward "Buddy" and Morris Frank, and sister Evelyn Riebeling. Visitation and a funeral service were held at Quernheim Funeral Home. A private graveside service was held at a later date.
Ila Mae Gaither, 69, of Cahokia, died Feb. 13, 2008, at her residence. She was the daughter of Della Edwards nee Lindsey and the late Kelly Edwards. She was married to Marvin Gaither. Mrs. Gaither is survived by her mother; husband; children Terri (Michael) Harashe of Dupo, Tammie Gaither of Cahokia, and Anthony Gaither of Cahokia; grandchildren Matthew (Amanda) Davidson of Dupo, Christopher (Jessica Fry) Narez of Cahokia, Devin Narez of Cahokia and Jessica Latimer of Cahokia; great-grandchildren Lonnie Darter, Penny Darter and soon-to-be born Lane Davidson; and sisters Linda Earnhardt, Wanda Ross and Myrna Fields. Melvin Arb, 93, of Columbia died Feb. 14, 2008. He was born June 1, 1917, in St. Louis, the son of the late Nicholas and Mathilda Arb nee Schwendman. He was married to the late Loretta Arb nee Roediger. Mr. Arb is survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Mr. Arb was retired from Emerson Electric in St. Louis. Aurelia Thoma, 81, of Columbia, died Feb. 14, 2008, in Columbia. She was born March 8, 1926, in Columbia, the daughter of the late Ludwig Herrmann and the late Louisa Menner. She married the late Lorenz Thoma in 1946. Mrs. Thoma is survived by her daughters Sharon (John) Durrer of Waterloo, Jean (Mike) Tiff of Columbia, Cathy (James) Evans of Glen Carbon and Linda Robitsch of Columbia; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and sisters Dorothy Jehling of Waterloo and Bernice (Tom) Wightman of Waterloo. She also preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Vernon Herrmann, and sister Marcella Spitz. Mrs. Thoma was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. Stanley Gregory, 76, of Waterloo, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, in Belleville. He was born Aug. 26, 1931, in East St. Louis, the son of the late Stanley Gregory Sr. and Zelma Rhymer. He is married to Beverly Gregory nee Thompson. Mr. Gregory is survived by his wife; daughters Donna (Paul) Whitelock of Austin, Texas, Susan (David) Nobbe of Columbia, and Elizabeth Gregory of St. Louis; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; sister Pauline Alex of Maryville; and brother Gerald (Barbara) Gregory of Centennial, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Anita Gregory nee Gonzalez; son Thomas Gregory; brothers Seth Deichmann and George Gregory; and sister Betty DuPont. Russell Eugene Weston Sr., 75, of rural Valmeyer, died Feb. 16, 2008, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born June 7, 1932, in Gorham, the son of the late Luther Weston and Lillie Weston nee Needham. He married Arbah Jo Weston nee Lyerla in 1953. Mr. Weston is survived by his daughter April (Ronald) Callahan of Valmeyer, and son Russell Weston Jr. Mr. Weston was a member of New Harmony Church. He was also a member of Columbia Blue Lodge 474 AF and AM. He was retired from General Groceries of St. Louis.
