Linda Sue Johnson
Born April 12, 1943 - Died July 21, 1997
Linda Sue Johnson, 54, of McLeansboro, died at 6:45 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 1997, at her home. She was a housewife.
She was born on April 12, 1943, in Olney, a daughter of William Alfred and Doris E. (Williams) Venters. She was married to Freeman Johnson, who survives.
The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 1997, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Randall Ragan officiated. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Johnson is survived by her parents, Rev. Alfred and Doris Venters of McLeansboro; two sons, Harvey Brent Johnson and wife Carol and Brian Johnson, both of McLeansboro; and three grandchildren, Brandi Nicole Johnson, Matthew Brent Johnson and Brett A. Johnson, all of McLeansboro.

Charles E. Miller
Born August 11, 1927 - Died August 5, 1997
Charles E. Miller, 69, of McLeansboro, died at 2:19 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 1997, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was in farm equipment sales with Hamilton-White County Equipment Company.
He was born on August 11, 1927, in Franklin County, a son of John G. and Dora L. (Smith) Miller. On December 30, 1950, he married Ava Laverne Ingram, who survives. He was a past master and member of Polk Masonic Lodge #137, member of the cemetery board of trustees of Knights Prairie Township, trustee and member of Ten Mile Baptist Church, a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and was formerly on the Hamilton County Unit #10 School Board.
The funeral was at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 1997, at Ten Mile Baptist Church. The Revs. Mark Lee, Ron Trotter, and Randy Carney officiated. Gholson Funeral Home of McLeansboro was in charge of the arrangements. Burial was in Ten Mile Cemetery, with graveside military rites by American Legion Post 106.
Besides his wife, Mr. Miller is survived by one son, Rick Miller and wife Teresa of McLeansboro; two daughters, Rhonda Carney and husband Randy of Thompsonville and Rene Trotter and husband Ron of Dahlgren; two brothers, Darrel Miller of Eldorado and Eugene Miller of Thompsonville; two sisters, Georgia Robertson of Macedonia and Dorothy Craine of Benton; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Neva Hess.
Memorials may be made to the Ten Mile Church Building and Landscaping Fund.

Harold Dean Tedford
Born October 31, 1924 - Died August 6, 1997
Harold Dean Tedford, 72, of Skowhegan, Maine, and formerly of Dale, died at 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6, 1997, at the Cedar Ridge Care Center in Skowhegan. He was a retired shipping clerk, having worked at the Distribution Center for Snap On Tools in Ottawa, Illinois.
He was born on October 31, 1924, in Dale, a son of Elmer and Ethel (Read) Tedford. On September 21, 1946, he married Mildred Jane Dorris, who survives. He was a U. S. Army combat veteran of WWII in the Pacific Theatre and was a member of the American Legion Post #106 in McLeansboro.
The funeral was at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, 1997 at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in Blooming Grove Cemetery in McLeansboro with full military graveside rites.
Mr. Tedford is survived by two daughters, Sharon Cox and husband Gary of Raymond, Maine, Connie Jean Hayes and husband Klayton of Pittston, Maine; two brothers, Donald R. Tedford of Marseilles, Illinois, and Billie Tedford of Seneca; two sisters, Juanita Wilson and Wilma Jean Tedford, both of McLeansboro; three grandchildren, Kimberly Swiecicki of New Market, New Hampshire, Melanie Anne Goldstein of Pittsford, Vermont, Alexander Tedford Hayes of Pittston, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wanda Redmon.

Bonnie L. Flannigan
Born June 20, 1917 - Died December 27, 1997
Bonnie L. Flannigan, 80, of McLeansboro, died at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker.
She was born on June 20, 1917, in Hamilton County, a daughter of William and Pearl (Tousley) Duncan. On Dec. 10, 1937, in Morganfield, Ky., she married Eual Flannigan, who died on Feb. 17, 1984. She was a member of the First General Baptist Church of McLeansboro and the Missionary Society at the church.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Harre Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Sefried and Rev. Bill Duncan officiated. Burial was in Oddfellows Cemetery in McLeansboro.
She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Smith and husband Larry of Wayne City; two sons, Ronnie Flannigan and wife Charlotte of Rossville, Ga., Donald G. Flannigan and friend Ronda of Mt. Vernon; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Marjorie Hannel of Franklin, N.C., Martha Reed, Mona Gaines and Janice Burnett of McLeansboro; and two brothers, the Rev. Bill Duncan of Carmi and Bob Duncan of Michigan.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother George Duncan and one infant son.

Ernest E. Hamilton
Born May 14, 1914 - Died December 26, 1997
Ernest E. Hamilton, 83, of McLeansboro, died at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. He was a retired mail carrier for the McLeansboro Post Office.
He was born on May 14, 1914, in Mt. Vernon, a son of Henry Woodford Hamilton and Lillian Mae (Hestwood) Johnson. On July 21, 1947, in Dixon, Ky., he married Mary Marie Johnson, who survives. He attended McLeansboro Church of Christ and was a member of VFW Post #1671 and the Hamilton County Chapter of AARP.
The funeral was at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Besides his wife, Mr. Hamilton is survived by two daughters, Wanda Shay and husband Edward of McLeansboro, Judy Spitzer and husband Allan of Champaign; five grandchildren, Jocelyn Spitzer and Corey Spitzer of Champaign, Brendy Shay and Carolyn Shay of McLeansboro, Betsy Holder and husband Mark of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one great-grandchild, Stephanie Holder of Kalamazoo; two sisters-in-law, Edith Hamilton of Forest Park, Ill., and Helen Hamilton of Covington, La.; and two brothers-in-law, Arthur Cottingham of McLeansboro and Alvin Johnson of Topeka, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ivan and Robert Hamilton; and three sisters, Ruby Cottingham, Mildred Warren and husband Inman, Velma Mariner and husband Charles.

Ellie Mae Manago
Born September 20, 1919 - Died December 20, 1997
Ellie Mae Manago, 78, of Phoenix, Ariz., and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix. She was a retired nurse from Chicago State Hospital in Chicago.
She was born on Sept. 20, 1919, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Clyde and Lora (Miller) Cross. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church near Dale.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. John Lee Jr. officiated. Burial was in Smith Cemetery near Dale.
She is survived by a brother, Clyde Cross of Claremore, Ariz.; a sister, LaVerne Webb of Phoenix; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, Melvin Hatchell and Joseph J. Manago.

Earl Owen
Born September 30, 1913 - Died December 24, 1997
Earl Owen, of Broughton, died at 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at his home. He was a retired farmer.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1913, in Pope County, a son of A.W. and Minnie (Morris) Owen. On March 14, 1942, he married Ruby Greer, who died in 1984. He was a 55-year old member of Broughton Masonic Lodge #963, a member of McLeansboro White Shrine and a member of Broughton Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 28, at the Broughton Baptist Church. The Rev. Delmar Feasel, the Rev. David Angelly and Rev. Bill Gholson officiated. Burial was in Hickory Hill Cemetery in Broughton. Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro was in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Owen is survived by one son, Joh Owen and wife Mary Lou Shanahan of Springfield; four brothers, Harvey Owen of Flint, Mich., Glen Owen and Claude Owen of Broughton, Wilburn Owen of Findley, Ohio; four sisters, Essie Graham, Myrtle McDonald and Irene Partain, all of Broughton, Genevieve Jones of Dixon.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Virgil Owen and A.W. Owen Jr.

Robert L. "Bob" Gholson
Born March 13, 1916 - Died December 21, 1997
Robert L. Gholson, of McLeansboro and formerly of Broughton, died at 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. He was a retired truck driver.
He was born on March 13, 1916, in Hamilton County, a son of Frank and Mabel (Donelson) Gholson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
The funeral was at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, at Gholson Funeral Home. The Rev. Bill Gholon officiated. Burial was in Gholson Cemetery near Broughton. Graveside military rites were performed by American Legion Post 106.
He is survived by two sons, Jeffery Gholson and wife Julie of Long Beach Calif.; and Geremy Gholson of Davidson, Mich.; a stepson, David Williams of Fenton, Mich.; a daughter, Jillian Gunn and Thomas of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Loretta Thornton and husband Doyce of Panama City, Fla.; a brother, Roland Gholson of Vale, Ore.; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a half-brother and two wives, Helen Forro and Etta M. Trinkhaus.

Lewis "Shorty" Jones
Born August 5, 1908 - Died December 23, 1997
Lewis "Shorty" Jones, 89, of McLeansboro died at 12:48 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. He was a retired welder and mechanic.
He was born on Aug. 5, 1908 in Peoria, son of Lewis and Mary (Bearl) Jones. On Dec. 24, 1946, in Morganfield, Ky., he married Virginia A. Hall, who survives.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, at Gholson Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Besides his wife, Mr. Jones is survived by two sons, Wayne Jones and wife Mary of Rock Falls, Ill., and Charles Jones and wife Chris of Dixon, Ill.; a daughter, Nellie Caldwell of Old Shawneetown; two sisters, Irene Lane of Peoria and Mary Foster of Chillicothe; nine grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, four brothers and three sisters.

Chloeteal Creswell
Born June 23, 1906 - Died December 26, 1997
Chloeteal Creswell, 91, of McLeansboro and formerly of Crawford County and Artesia, N.M., died at 5 a.m. on Dec. 26, 1997, at McLeansboro Healthcare Nursing Home. She was a retail clerk and homemaker.
She was born on June 23, 1906 in Greenup, a daughter of Lew and Susie (Horton) Matthews. On Aug. 1, 1924, she married James S. Creswell, who preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1936. She was a member of the Artesia (N.M.) Christian Church.
The funeral was on Monday, Dec. 29, at 10:30 a.m. at Goodwine Funeral Home in Robinson. The Rev. Larry Moreau officiated. burial was in Palestine Cemetery. Local arrangements were by Harre Funeral Home of McLeansboro.
Mrs. Creswell is survived by two daughters, Normal Miller of Robinson and Carol Russell of Artesia, N.M.; a son, George "Bud" Creswell and wife Gretta Creswell of Robinson; a son-in-law, Robert McClearey of Killeen, Texas; a sister, Maxine Snyder of Palestine; 12 grandchildren, including Karin Miller, Craig Miller and Debbie Campbell of McLeansboro; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death fy her parents; two daughters, Rosemary Creswell and Phyllis McClearey; a brother, William Matthews; a sister, Faye Kintner; and two grandchildren, Doug Miller and Shawn Russell.
