Charles Bowman
Charles A. Bowman, 63, of McLeansboro, died at 10:57 a.m. Sept. 22, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.
He retired from Southern Railroad, where he was a machine operator.
He was a Protestant.
Surviving are his wife, Glenda Faye; three sons, Larry Lee of Springfield, Mo., and Gary Eugene and James Michael, both of McLeansboro; a sister, Helen Campbell of Macedonia; five brothers, Roy and Dwight, both of McLeansboro, Loran of Bradley, Dean of Benton and Eugene of Enfield; and eight grandchildren.
Services were at 2:00 p.m. September 25, 1997 at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro, with burial in Braden Valley Cemetery near Dale.
Bernadine St. Clair
Born March 24, 1921 - Died September 20, 1997
Bernadine St. Clair, 76, of Shirland, Ill., and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 12:20 a.m. Sept. 20, 1997, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
She owned and operated Bernadine's Beauty Shop.
She was born March 24, 1921, in Bloomington, a daughter of Edward and Louise "Scheffert" Pufpaff. On Nov. 10, 1944, she married Earnest Dale St. Clair in Sioux Falls, S.D., who preceded her in death in 1973.
Graveside services were 1:00 p.m. September 24, 1997 at Digby Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Joe Danner officiated.
The Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. St. Clair is survived by one son Dale E. St. Clair and wife Sheila of Spring Grove, Ill.; three grandchildren, Hope Kenell and husband Dan, Machelle and Renae St. Clair; one great-grandchild, Anndraia Machelle; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
She was a charter member of the St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Rockton and served on the Shirland Town Council and was City Clerk.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Louis Pufpaff.
Keith Webb
Born June 23, 1938 - Died September 22, 1997
Keith Webb, 59, of McLeansboro, died Sept. 22, 1997 at work.
He was a plant operator at Saline Valley Conservation District. He had served for 16 years as Hamilton County Treasurer.
He was born June 23, 1938, in Hamilton County, a son of Oakley and Audrey (Duncan) Webb.
Services were Sept. 24, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Ken Cook officiated. Burial followed in Oddfellows Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Mr. Webb is survived by his mother, Audrey Webb of McLeansboro, three daughters, Julie McGovern and husband J.R. of Cartersville, Ga., Kim Floyd and husband Roy of McLeansboro, Lorrie Karcher and husband Scott of Dahlgren; five grandchildren; two brothers, Mike Webb and wife Susan of McLeansboro and Steve Webb and wife Judy of McLeansboro.
He was preceded in death by his father, Oakley Webb.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Eugene Waugh
Born Sep. 17, 1915 - Died September 16, 1997
Eugene Waugh, 82, of Dahlgren, died at 8:15 p.m. Sept. 16, 1997, at Harrisburg Medical Center
He was a retired school administrator, having served at Dodds School in Jefferson County and Dale Grade School in the Hamilton County Unit 10 School District.
Mr. Waugh was born Sept. 17, 1915, in Dahlgren, a son of Charles Emery and Fannie (Delany) Waugh.
He never married.
Services were Sept. 20, 1997, at First United Methodist Church in Dahlgren with the Revs. Mary Erwin and Leland Widick officiating. Burial was in Dahlgren IOOF Cemetery with military rites by McLeansboro American Legion Post 106.
Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Waugh is survived by one sister, Loraine Bristow and husband Frank of Littleton, Colo.; sister-in-law Esther Waugh of Greenville; a dear friend, Wilma Harrison of Dahlgren; three nephews; and two nieces.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Dahlgren. He was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Central and North Burma campaigns. He served on the Hamilton County Unit 10 School Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Felsia Cook
Born May 26, 1901 - Died September 1, 1997
Felsia Cook, 96, of McLeansboro, died at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center in McLeansboro. She was a housewife.
She was born on May 26, 1901, in Hamilton County, a daughter of George W. and Julia (Oglesby) Miller. On Dec 18, 1922, she married Virgil S. Cook, who died on Nov. 25, 1980. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of McLeansboro.
The funeral was at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Gary Davenport officiated. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy M. Cox of McLeansboro; five grandchildren, Kenneth and Robert Cox, both of McLeansboro, Denise Barker of McLeansboro, Dennis Cook of Washington, Ill., and Curtis Cook of Eureka, Ill.; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her parents, son George Cook, son-in-law Willie Cox, three brothers, two sisters and a daughter-in-law Wanda Cook.
Tidwell R. Voss
Born January 25, 1917 - Died September 1, 1997
Tidwell R. Voss, 92, of McLeansboro, died at 11:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. He was retired from running his own taxi service in McLeansboro for many years.
He was born on Jan. 25, 1917, in South Pittsburg, Pa., a son of Mead and Susie (Tidwell) Voss. He was married to Veronica Hassett, who is now deceased. He was a veteran of World War II.
The graveside funeral was at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, in St. Clement's Cemetery in McLeansboro. The Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Gholson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by a sister, Grace Eubank of Decatur, Ala.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter.
John B. Wathen
MURPHYSBORO -- John B. Wathen, 98 years old, of Murphysboro, beloved teacher and educator, died at 2:53 a.m. Dec. 10, 2001, in the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County.
He was born on Oct. 31, 1903, in rural Equality to James Edward and Teresa Buntain Wathen.
He married Sarah Ellen Drone on March 3, 1924. She died on Aug. 19, 1980.
He is survived by his only daughter, Avis Wathen Cardwell; two granddaughters and their spouses, Debbie and Steve Glodo and Gaye and Jay Youngman, all of Murphysboro; great-grandchildren and their spouses, Josh and Angela Glodo, Barnhart, Mo., Sarah and Cody Muhs, Newton, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Matt Youngman and Beth Youngman of Murphysboro; and one great-great-granddaughter, Danielle of Barnhart, Mo.
A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Gary Gummersheimer at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at St. Andrew's Church in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Crawshaw Funeral Home on Wednesday and until the hour of services Thursday morning. Burial will be held in the Church Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the John and Ellen Wathen Memorial Scholarship which funds an annual scholarship for a Murphysboro High School Senior. Memorials may also be made to St. Andrew's Church.
John was a graduate of Southern Illinois Normal University in 1931, and received his Master's Degree from the University of Illinois. He was a history teacher at Gorham Community High School until 1940 and he joined the faculty at MTHS in 1941. He was instrumental in the formation of the Murphysboro Unit District and became the Assistant Superintendent of District 186 in 1959. He retired from that position in 1969. John was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Murphysboro, and was also active in many civic and fraternal organizations. He was a lifetime member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, No. 572.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his only brother, James Eugene Wathen, and his son-in-law, William Edward Cardwell.
Jimmie L. Swallers
DU QUOIN -- Jimmie L. Swallers, 72, of DuQuoin, passed away at 12:3 P-M., Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Jimmie was a retired 35-year employee of DuQuoin Packing Company. He was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of AFL-CIO Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was born Dec. 26, 1928, at DuQuoin, the son of Roy B. and Lucille (Wright) Swallers.
He married Nila L. Poling on Oct. 3, 1954, at the Presbyterian Church in DuQuoin. She survives.
In addition to his wife of DuQuoin, he is survived by two sons, Steven E. Swallers and wife Cheryl of DuQuoin, Stuart Dale Swallers of DuQuoin; special friend, Jammi Likes of DuQuoin, grandchildren, Rachael E. Swallers and Matt B. Swallers, both of DuQuoin; brother, Bob Swallers and wife, Betty, of DuQuoin; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the Searby Funeral Home in DuQuoin, with the Rev. Carl Mesiti officiating. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. today at Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at DuQuoin. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the DuQuoin VFW Post 513.
Friends may make memorials to the Marshall Browning Hospital Tree of Life or to the American Heart Association. Memorials will be accepted at the funeral home.
Eunice "Polly" Lackey Masterson
PULASKI -- Eunice "Polly" Lackey Masterson,, age 84, of Lake Barrington, formerly of Pulaski, died at 7:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at the Long Grove Manor in Long Grove.
She was born on Nov. 10, 1917, in Pulaski to Ira and Elizabeth (Reeves) Lackey. She married Joseph Bernard Masterson at St. Mary's in Mound City on Dec. 12, 1945.
She was a former parishioner of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Water Vielad, Mich. She had been a beautician in Mounds and Cairo. She retired as a co-owner of a motel in South Haven, Mich.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Bernard Masterson of Lake Barrington; three sons, Joseph Bernard Masterson Jr. of Indianapolis, Ind., Thomas Ira Masterson of Bannock Burn and Bruce Michael Masterson of Riverwoods; six grandchildren; one brother, George Lackey of Anna; one sister, Lois Davis of Kansas City, Kan.; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, Lily Lackey, 2 brothers Glenn Lackey and Fredrick Lackey and two sisters, Dulcie Gaines and Dorothy Calvin.
Funeral Mass for Eunice "Polly" Lackey Masterson will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mound City, with Msgr. William McGhee officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Mounds. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Crain Funeral home in Ullin. Wake service will be held at 5:30 p.m.
Ila Francis O'Daniell
MARION -- Ila Frances O'Daniell, 90, formerly of Goreville, and the Chicago area, passed away at Marion Memorial Hospital Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at 8:20 p.m.
Services will be held at Mitchell Hughes Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Allan Milligan officiating and assisted by the Rev. Jeff Bealmear. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy.
Memorial contributions may be given to Methodist Church of Goreville.
Ila was born Oct. 16, 1911, in Crofton, Ky., to Fred and Virginia (Pollard) Lantrip. They both preceded her in death. She married Lewis O'Daniell in Wheaton in June of 1929. He passed away July 18, 1994. She was a member of Methodist Church in Goreville and attended Second Baptist church in Marion.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Mark and Carol O'Daniell of West Linn, Ore., Myles and Nancy O'Daniell of Sparta, N.J. and Ellen O'Daniell of Darien, Conn.; a great-grandson, Harrison T. O'Daniell of Sparta, N.J.; a brother, Rex Lantrip of Orland Park; two nephews, Jack Williams of Pennsylvania and Jimmy Lantrip of Tennessee; and two nieces, Sandra Heitmann of Tinley Park and Janice George of Lemont.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Lowell O'Daniell, a niece Roma Erback, a brother, Raymond Lantrip, and a sister, Marie Williams.
