HERRIN -- Virginia Martell Schleper, 66, of Decatur, formerly of Herrin, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur.
She was born July 12, 1935, in Bush to Joseph J. and Mary Rose (Romano) Martell. Her father survives.
She was a home economist and graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor of science and master's degree in home economics. She served on the faculty of the Home Economics Department at SIU and also taught secondary education at Johnston City, Cahokia and Decatur high schools. She was employed as head teacher and gardener at the New Horizon Daycare Center in Decatur.
She was serving as GM Square president in Decatur and was on the board of directors for the Coalition of Neighborhood Organizations. She also worked with DMCOC. While a member of the OLMC Catholic Church in Herrin she served as organist. She was a member of the Illinois Vocational Home Economics Association, the National Education Association and the Illinois Education Association.
Survivors include one daughter, Jennifer Kretsinger of Decatur; one son, Cameron Schleper of Springfield; one grandson, Garrett Jon Taylor Pirtle of Decatur; her father, Joseph Martell of Herrin; one sister and brother-in-law, Josie Martell Cambron and Ron Cambron of St. Louis; her former husband, John Schleper of Decatur; several aunts and uncles; and many cousins.
Her mother, Mary Rose Martell, and two infant brothers preceded her in death.
A memorial funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin. Monsignor Ken Schaefer will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 16, 2001, at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Burial will be at San Carlo Cemetery in Herrin.
Memorials may be made to the OLMC/St. Mary's School Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Frances E. Marlin Englebright
HERRIN -- Frances E. Marlin Englebright was born Dec. 17, 1916, and died December 13, 2001, in Herrin Hospital.
She was married to Ross H. Englebright, who preceded her in death in 1984.
Her parents were Casper H. Marlin and Mary Jane Curtis.
Her four surviving children include three daughters and a son and their spouses; Ann and Steven Palm of Houston, Texas, Barbara and Ernest LeQuatte of Herrin, Rachel and Robert Fox of Portland, Ore., and Greg and Terry Englebright of Johnston City. Fifteen grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren survive, as well as two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sue Snyder of Evansville, Ind., and Dorris and Lionel Chastain of Madison, Ala.
Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City. Services will follow at 7 p.m. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. the next day, Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to Camp Jericho Youth Camp.

BENTON -- Willis "Birthday" Taylor, 91, died at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, in Benton Health Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Morton and Johnston Funeral Home, with the Revs. Roger Ellsworth and Ron Cremeens officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & OddFellows Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
