Paul D. Basden, 68, died July 7, 1997. He married Mary Hewlett, who preceded him in death. Surviving are half-brothers, Ray of Alton, Danny of Florida, Andrew of Clinton, Il., and Timothy of Denver, Co.; and sisters, Marcella Parker of Highland, and Mary Ewing of Wood River; half-sisters, Esther Parker of Alton, Ruth Woods of Brighton, Shirley Aud of Jacksonville, Barb Woods of Godfrey, and Alice Gurley of Bethalto. Services were through Fine and Quinn. Memorials may be given to Faith Christian Fellowship Church in South Roxana.

Gladys M. Basden, 78, of Hartford, died May 11, 2001, in Alton Memorial Hospital. Her husband, David, survives. Also surviving are a son, Roger Romani of Bethalto; and a daughter, Pam Smith of Wood River. Services were in Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights. Memorials may be given to charities of choice.

Also surviving are a daughter, Debra Arnold of Cottage Hills; and brothers, Elder James Peterman of Pilot Knob, Mo., and Elmer Peterman of St. James, Mo. Services were in Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights. Memorials may be given to charities of choice.

James A. Bassett, Sr., 84, of Fosterburg, died Dec. 14, 1997, in his home. He married Emily Green, who survives. Also surviving are a son, James of Fosterburg; a daughter, Mary Tallman of Gillespie; a brother, Lawrence of Mt. Vernon; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were in Elias-Smith in Bethalto. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.

Emily Ann Bassett, 88, of Alton, died Feb. 24, 2001, in Eldercare of Alton. Her husband, James, preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, James of Alton; a daughter, Mary Tallman of Gillespie; and sisters, Pearl Doolen of Phoenix, Az., and Margaret Green of St. Petersburg, Fl. Services were in Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Bethalto. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.

Bassford 06/29/98
June P. Bassford, 82, of Alton, died Dec. 29, 1998, in Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. Her husband, George, survives. She was president of the Alton Community Service League, and was on the boards of the YWCA and St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Bassford was an active golfer, and was three-time women's champion at Lockhaven Country Club. Also surviving are daughters, Janine Govreau of St. Louis and Cynthia Nappa of Lancaster, N.H.; a son, George of Cross Junction, Va.; a sister, Dorothy Stacy of Annadale, Va; and a sister-in-law, Lola Burkhart of Alton. Services were through Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Alton. Memorials may be given to the Leukemia Society.

Bast 12/05/97
John C. Bast, 78, of Bethalto, died Dec. 5, 1997, in Alton Memorial Hospital. He married Betty Schmidt, who survives. Also surviving are sons, John of Bethalto, James of Granite City, and Stephen of Pensacola, Fl.; a sister, Delores Azbill of Arizona; and eight grandchildren. Services were through Elias-Smith in Bethalto. Memorials may be given for masses or to the Angel Fund.

Dorothy Delores Batchelor, 84, of Alton, died Sept. 23, 2000, in her home. Her husband, Clarence, preceded her in death. Surviving are sons, Stephen and Andy, both of Alton, and David of Sedalia, Mo.; and a daughter, Bonnie Mosby of Lake City, Fl. Services were through Fine and Quinn Chapel for Funerals in Alton. Memorials may be given to Cherry Street Baptist Church in Alton.

Ruth Ann Bates, 49, of Edwardsville, died Dec. 28, 1999, in Saint Anthony's Health Center in Alton. Her husband, Paul, survives. Also surviving are her parents, Charles and Loretta McAtee of St. Louis; brothers, Michael McAtee of St. Louis, and Patrick McAtee of Wichita, Ks.; and sisters, Janet Valentine of Florissant, Mary Papasifakis of Madison, Al., Diana King of Collinsville; and Sharon Nepsa. Services were through Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Bethalto. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Batson 09/10/97
Virginia Batson, 53, of Granite City, died Sept. 10, 1997, in her home. Her husband, Charles, survives. Also surviving are her mother, Louise Householder; a son, Peter of North Glenn, Co.; daughters, Shelly Hyden of Bethalto, and Carol Batson of Alton; brothers, Paul Householder of Sikeston, Mo., and Gene, Louis and Donny Householder, all of Allen Park, Mi.; sisters, Elizabeth Householder of Bethalto, Mable Oatman of Dearborn Heights, Mi., and Ginger Anderson of Taylor, Mi.; and four grandchildren. Services were in Elias-Smith in Bethalto.

Robert J. Batson, 60, of Wood River, died Jan. 2, 2001, in his home. He married Peggy Stumpe, who survives. Smith Ura Mae Smith, 81, of Alton, died June 12, 2001, in St. John's Mercy in St. Louis. Her husband, Raymond, preceded her in death. Formerly, she was co-owner of Omni Travel in East Alton. Surviving is a brother, Stanley Darr of Godfrey. Services were in Fine and Quinn Chapel for Funerals in Alton. Memorials may be given to Elm Street Presbyterian Church in Alton.

Elizabeth Batty, 81, of Wood River, died Nov. 4, 1998, in Jerseyville Manor. Services were through Marks Mortuary in Wood River.

Mary N. Bauer, 82, of Bethalto, died Oct. 11, 1997, in Alton Memorial Hospital. Her husband, Frank, preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, James of Bethalto; daughters, Sharon Asaro of Bethalto, and Cynthia Borman of Wood River; sisters, Agnes Leady of Godfrey, and Bonnie Duval of St. Petersburg, Fl.; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services were through Elias-Smith in Bethalto. Memorials may be given to St. John's Children's Hospital burn unit, Compassionate Friends and to charities of choice.

John Henry Bauer, 86, of Brighton, died July 6, 1999, in his home. He married Margaret Zimmerman, who preceded him in death. Surviving are sons, John of St. Louis, and David of Brighton; daughters, Florence Scheffel of Edwardsville, and Freda Bauer of Crandall, Tx.; and long time friend, Nina Fry of Brighton. Services were through Targhetta Funeral Home in Brighton. Memorials may be given to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
