June P. Bassford, 82, of Alton, died Dec. 29, 1998, in Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. Her husband, George, survives. She was president of the Alton Community Service League, and was on the boards of the YWCA and St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Bassford was an active golfer, and was three-time women's champion at Lockhaven Country Club. Also surviving are daughters, Janine Govreau of St. Louis and Cynthia Nappa of Lancaster, N.H.; a son, George of Cross Junction, Va.; a sister, Dorothy Stacy of Annadale, Va; and a sister-in-law, Lola Burkhart of Alton.
