Helen Schlotmann, 91, of Red Bud, died Jan. 23, at Oak Hill Nursing Home in Waterloo. She was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Red Bud, the daughter of the late Christ and Ellen (nee Kelley) Kern. She married Clemens Schlotmann Sr. in 1936 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud. He died in 1971. She is also preceded in death by a son, John Schlotmann; granddaughter Lisa Schlotmann; and brothers James, Leo, Joseph and Simon Kern. Survivors include children Joseph (Pamela) Schlotmann of Red Bud, Clemens Schlotmann Jr. of Red Bud, Henry (Barbara Jean) Schlotmann, Alfred Schlot-mann of Waterloo and Helen Marie (Jerome) Schlotmann of Waterloo; and sisters Sr. Wilfreda Kern ASC of Ruma; Sr. Teresita Kern ASC and Sr. Lucille Kern ASC of Belleville. She had been a housekeeper at St. Clement's Hospital in Red Bud and at the Ruma Convent. Mrs. Schlotmann was an avid quilter, collected salt and pepper shakers, loved working in her garden and canned vegetables. Visitation is Sunday, Jan. 27, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral is Monday, Jan. 28, 10 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud with Father Tom Stout officiating. She will be buried at the church's cemetery. James "Jim" Garris Sr., 82, of Chester died Jan. 24, 2008, at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis. He was born Jan. 12, 1926, in Chester, the son of E.A. and Nellie (nee Cuberly) Garris. He married Dorothy Holliday in 1978. She died in 1985. Survivors include a son, James Garris Jr. of Pasadena, Tex.; a daughter, Kathy Valentine of Tamaroa; a sister, Edna (Poenitske) Stueve; sister-in-law Dorothy Garris of Chester; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A visitation and funeral were at Pechacek-McClure Funeral Home in Chester, Rev. Mark Willig officiating. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester with a military graveside service under the direction of the VFW Post 3553. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church in Chester.
Hulda Rafferty nee Thiele, 93, formerly of Waterloo , died Jan. 24, 2008, in Ask Flat, Ark. She was born Jan. 12, 1915, in Maeystown, the daughter of the late Herman and Emma Thiele nee Faus. She was married to the late Phillip Rafferty. Mrs. Rafferty is survived by her son Philip (Cathleen) Rafferty of Arcata, Calif.; step-daughter Sally Henseley; two step-grand-daughters; sister Eileen Hoffman of Waterloo; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister Dorothy Hergenroeder. A memorial service will be held in March in Arkansas.
Lona Frances Niewe-glowski, 81, of Baldwin died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 at her residence. She was born Oct. 12, 1926, the daughter of the late Martin and Lona May (nee Henderson) Miller of Lake County, Ten. She was the wife of the late John Nieweglowski. They were married Sept. 8, 1945 at East St. Louis. Survivors include children Michael (Janice) Nieweglowski, Theresa (Michael) Gabel, Virginia "Ginny" (Bruce) Williamson, Mary "Lucy" (Dean) Higgins, John (Rhonda) Nieweglowski, Jr. and Connie (Scott) Lewis; a sister, Cora Jane (Arville) Hall; 20 grandchildren: 28 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She preceded in death by eight brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Nieweglowski was a homemaker who especially enjoyed gardening in her flower garden. Visitation was at the Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. A funeral was conducted at the funeral home the Rev. Father Tom Stout officiating. Burial was at the St. John Church Cemetery.
Marjorie M. Berry, nee Brown, 88, of Valmeyer died Jan. 25, 2008 at Oak Hill in Waterloo. She was born July 7, 1919 in Modoc, the daughter of the late Harry and Lena Brown, nee Roth. She was the wife of the late Dean Berry. Survivors include sons, Jerry (Janice) Berry, Joe (Tracey) Berry and Jeff (Tracey) Berry; grandchildren Angie (Scott) Corey, Douglas (Cindy) Berry, Dean Berry, Darla Berry, April Berry, Stacy Barry, Kelly Berry and Laura Berry; great-grandchildren Olivia Berry and Maggie Berry; sisters Albertha Doiron and Lula Cowell; a brother, Robert (Jean) Brown; and special niece Leta Bauer. She was preceded in death by a son, James Berry; a sister, Bernette Robert; and brothers, Myron "Judge" Brown and Marvin Brown. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Valmeyer. Edward Embrich Sr., 73, of Waterloo, died Jan. 25, 2008, in Waterloo. He was born Nov. 8, 1934, in East St. Louis, the son of Martin and Frances (nee Andel) Embrich. Paul Sondag, 87, of Waterloo, died Jan. 28, 2008, in Red Bud. He was born Jan. 26, 1921, in Valmeyer, the son of the late Frank and Ida Sondag Sr. nee Mitweide. He was married to Clara Sondag nee Bade for 66 years. Mr. Sondag is survived by his wife; children Paulette (Allan) Englerth, Carol Jean (Mark) Pinkerton and Diane (Mark) Gorris; grandchildren Jeffrey Englerth, Jennifer (Brad) Whelan, Jamie (William) Riechmann, Chad Kaestner, Christine (Paul) Hrdlicka, Ryan Kaestner, Austin Gorris, Andrea Gorris and Alissa Gorris; great-grandchildren Emily Whelan, Cole Matzenbacher and Alivia Hrdlicka; and brother, Frank Sondag Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gene Sondag. Helen Stahlmann nee Eckert, 81, of Waterloo, died Jan. 28, 2008, in St. Louis. She was born May 16, 1926, in Sugar Loaf Township, the daughter of the late Edward and Irene Eckert nee Masserang. She was married to the late Leroy Stahlmann. Mrs. Stahlmann is survived by her children Sandra (Michael) Scruggs and Steven (Joanne) Stahlmann; grandchildren Jeffrey (Gretchen) Scruggs and Jonathan Scruggs (friend Emma Wilmot); sister Doris (Bobby) Reece; brother Marc (Jean) Eckert; and brother-in-law Robert Stahlmann. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and close friend Alois Brandt. Mrs. Stahlmann was an avid bowler, former professional seamstress and a retired Waterloo School District bus driver. Dorothy Amanda Christ-opher, 99, of Columbia, died Jan. 28, 2008. She was born Oct. 23, 1908, the daughter of the late Fred and Louisa Durrer nee Loehr. She was married to the late Joseph Christopher; he preceded her in death in 1958. Mrs. Christopher is survived by her daughters Joan (Bill) Young of Chesterfield, Mo., and Mary (Carl) Landgraf of Columbia; grandchildren Jack Young, Paul Young, Ann Young, Jay Young, Dawn Pansing, Jodi Artinger, Abby Ahlers and Cris Landgraf; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Oliver Durrer and Erdman Durrer, and sister Alfrieda Horn. Mrs. Christopher was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia, where she was a member of the Altar Society. She was also a member of Columbia Senior Citizens. Ruth Lickenbrock nee Rehmer, 84, of Waterloo, died Jan. 29, 2008, in St. Louis. She was born July, 20, 1923, in Baldwin, the daughter of the late Herman and Ida Rehmer nee Fehr. She was married to Harold Licken-brock. Mrs. Lickenbrock is survived by her husband; children Terry Finnerty of Waterloo and Nancy (David) Graper of Red Bud; grandchildren Kevin Graper, Kristi Graper, Kathryn (Harold) Tillman, Karri (Daniel) Haggin and Brad (Elise) Finnerty; great-grandchildren Chelsea Tillman, Miles Tillman, Olivia Haggin, Caitlin Haggin, Michaela Finnerty, Hannah Finnerty and Kathryn Finnerty; and sister-in-law Joan Rehmer. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Edward Finnerty; son Michael Finnerty; one sister and nine brothers. Mrs. Lickenbrock was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. She was also a member of the Monroe Council for the Handicapped and was a retired cook at Waterloo High School. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home.
